Closely linked to the history of the circus, clowns have come in many shapes and sizes over the years and the clowns that we know today are relatively modern. Initially, at the start of the last century, “interval” clowns would burst into the circus ring and mock the acts that had performed before them. But they soon ceased to be merely an extra and become a separate act in their own right. Based on two contrasting characters, they would perform short comedy sketches. One of them, the whiteface clown, inherited the traditional appearance of old clowns: the white face of the maestros from the Commedia dell'arte , the enigmatic black eyebrow crossing their forehead, a striking and elegant costume... This was the sensible, clever and somewhat domineering member of the duo. The other, the auguste, was more naïve, if not frankly clumsy, finding it hard to move around in their huge shoes, wearing colourful costumes and an equally striking red nose. These are the traditional, conventional clowns, the ageless circus clowns who, while maintaining traditional elements, have managed to move with the times and offer a complete, well-developed show that is adapted to the characteristics and needs of our time.

These are the main characteristics of the TUTIK CLOWNS – GARI , MONTXO & JOSELONTXO , traditional clowns, continuing the performance approach that was revived over twenty years ago by the famous HERMANOS DONOSTI . You cannot find Gari, Montxo and Joselontxo’s work in any record shops, you have to share it with them at each of their performances, to experience and enjoy it as the show unfolds, as you would in any traditional circus. Kids and adults alike. Classic and traditional, but adapted to our times.

THE TUTIK CLOWNS – GARI , MONTXO & JOSELONTXO ______

In the middle of the 1970s, Ramón Irizar embarked on his career in the marvellous world of clowns. During that time, he met various fellow travellers and had several adventures and, in 1995, after meeting Garikoitz Muñoz and Joxean Malvido, they created the TUTIK CLOWNS clown company – Gari, Montxo & Joselontxo. Since then, these three clowns have worked with the goal of updating the traditional concept of the circus clown without sacrificing or distorting its basic characteristics and seeking to bring professionalism to one of the most serious activities in the world, making people laugh. Gari, Montxo y Joselontxo, the TUTIK CLOWNS, are now a trio composed of a “whiteface clown” (Garikoitz Muñoz ) and two “augustes” ( Ramón Irizar and José Antonio Malvido ), who perform their shows in Spanish, Basque, French, English and German and offer a type of clown that differs to those that are currently commonplace: traditional circus clowns but at a modern pace.

Music also plays a part in the shows of the TUTIK CLOWNS , whose three members have had full academic musical training. In addition to conventional instruments like the saxophone, trumpet, tuba and violin, they play instruments that may seem strange but are traditional in the circus, such as bells and musical saws. Their costumes are also straight out of the circus, consisting of authentic clown suits which, through the use of suitable accessories for each show, result in frequent and surprising costume changes during the course of the shows. They have worked in major European circuses such as the Pinder and Medrano circuses and in the Christmas Circuses in France, the Raluy Circus in Catalonia, the Christmas Circus in Passau (Germany) and in the World Circus in . They have also appeared in theatres and festivals in the Basque Country and taken part in several programmes on the ETB Basque television channel. Here is a summary of their work in the marvellous world of the circus ring:
