In the Basque Country, 1895 marked the birth of the Partido Nacionalista Vasco (Basque Nationalist Party), concurrent with the development of the cultural nationalist movement known as the ‘Gaelic revival’ in pre-revolutionary Ireland. In 1939, the Spanish Civil War ended with the destruction of the Spanish Second Republic, plunging Basque nationalism into decades of intense persecution. Conversely, at this same time, Irish nationalist aspirations were realized to an unprecedented degree during the ‘republicanization’ of the Irish Free State under Irish leader Éamon de Valera. -

The financing of the guerrilla and the occupying armies impoverished peasant classes and uncovered the contradictions and iniquities of Ancien Regime -Foral-. Post- war violent attitudes reflect the more exploited classes' move against a social and economic model they reject. Between 1808 and 1823 were established the bases for the transition to agrarian capitalism. Key Words: Economy. Crisis of the ancien regime. Basque Country. Ortiz de Orruño, José Mª (Univ. Among others reasons, it was because of the provincitial militia created in 1823 by the absolutist basque landowners thanks to the administrative and financial autonomy of the foral system. -
De La Zona Occidental De Gipuzkoa
Observaciones acerca del acento de la zona occidental de Gipuzkoa JOSE IGNACIO HUALDE (University ofIllinois) Abstract This paper examines the parameters of variation found in the accentual systems of western Guipuscoa. This area includes varieties with very different accentual systems ranging from some which are fundamentally identical to southwestern Biscayan to others that are more akin to the central Biscayan system to yet others with only very limited accentual contrasts. o. -
