First, I would like to thank my readers, Professors Anthony Webster and Courtney Handman, for their guidance and comments on multiple drafts of my work. They not only provided insightful ideas, but also challenged me to think through my analysis in ways that have made this work as well as other projects much stronger. In addition, the comments and suggestions provided by Professors Elizabeth Keating, Iraide Ibarretxe-Atuñano, Danny Law, James Slotta and Barbra Meek helped me rethink my analysis in new and productive ways. Finally, this MA would not have been made possible without the valuable insights, guidance and support of Professor Itxaso Rodriguez-Ordoñez. I would also like to thank my linguistic anthropology graduate student friends, among them Hannah Foster, Aniruddhan Vasudevan, Qui’chi Patlan, Krishantha Fedricks and Nelson Yang, not only for their endless and insightful comments on my work, but also for their mentorship, encouragement and support through the process; a special thanks to Ani and Hannah for their continuous insightful edits to many drafts! It was a crucial year for the company with the materializing of one of the biggest operations in business acquisition in the Spanish energy sector in recent years: the purchase for 330 million euros of the natural gas distributors in Cantabria and Murcia. This acquisition marks a before and an after for Naturgas Energía as it meant a very significant resizing of the company in terms of geographical areas, dimension and business opportunities. As far as regulation is concerned, the year was marked by the culmination of the process to review the European energy directives with the passing of the third raft of regulations, in which Directive 2009/73/EC on common rules for the internal market in natural gas stands out. Equally important from the point of view of the gas system was the holding of the first Open Season, in which the marketers were offered the potential interconnection capacity between Spain and France by 2013.

  • Interactions Among Focus, Exhaustivity, and Constituent Order in Spanish and Basque
INTERACTIONS AMONG FOCUS, EXHAUSTIVITY, AND CONSTITUENT ORDER IN SPANISH AND BASQUE DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Lorena Sainz-Maza Lecanda Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Professor Peter W. Culicover, Co-advisor Professor Scott A. Schwenter, Co-advisor Professor Rebeka Campos-Astorkiza Copyrighted by Lorena Sainz-Maza Lecanda 2017 ABSTRACT The notion of exhaustivity has been traditionally discussed in relation to contrastive or identificational focus in proposing that this kind of focus performs the identification of the only or maximal entity satisfying a given predication (e.g. Kiss, 1998). Be this as it may, it has been recently suggested that this semantic-pragmatic property also plays a significant role in the differing structural configurations of information focus, specially as it pertains to paradigmatic cases of information focus represented through wh-question and answer pairs (e.g. Kiss, 2007; Yasavul, 2013; Destruel et al., 2015). In Hungarian, for instance, it has been argued that the variable structural positioning between immediate preverbal focus and in-situ focus is conditioned by exhaustivity. Horvath (2007) defends that immediate preverbal focus, but not in-situ focus, expresses exhaustivity. While this may be true of Hungarian, it remains an open question whether exhaustivity conditions the structural configuration a language uses to express information focus. In contributing to this question, this dissertation provides an investigation of the interactions among information focus, exhaustivity and constituent order in two typologically unrelated languages, namely Basque and Spanish.

Ikastolen Elkartea, example of effective transfrontier cooperation under the European Language Charter. Oñati Socio-legal Series [online], 7 (6), 1343-1370. Available from: https://ssrn.com/abstract=3074342 Abstract Basque language subsists in a transfrontier situation. Indeed, this minority or regional language lives between France and Spain. Under the European Legal Framework, the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages provides tools to protect this minority language. Facing different legal regimes of protection and different legal structures Euskara (Basque language) receives support from education. Through the realisation of ethnography of the Basque schooling system (Ikastolen Elkartea) I am going to analyse the transfrontier cooperation established under Art.14 of the Charter using the example of education in Basque.

  • Institutional Relations Commitment to Society
INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONS COMMITMENT TO SOCIETY Institutional Relations are part of Euskaltel’s idiosyncrasy, which applies the commitment to the market and proximity as the philosophy in the relations with all interest groups. As such, every year Euskaltel carries out a Society Survey in order to subject its activity to social examination on the internal and external level, so as to find out how the market values its activity beyond the customer-provider relationship. Sponsorship is another formula for social commitment to the customers, the subscribers and society in general. Here sport is a key element in Euskaltel’s commitment and in 2007 it has been present in cycling, Basque pelota, mountaineering and surfing. Euskaltel’s participation in the fiestas of the three Basque capitals has been particularly relevant in the International Firework Festivals. It has not only been involved in the fiestas from the most ludic point of view, but also encouraging, from responsibility, participation in sustainable fiestas. Other initiatives have been extended into the family ambit, like supporting the Large Families; the Garbide programme to promote respect for the environment from the pedagogical ambit between parents- educational centres-children and the Euskera (Basque language) fiestas (Ibilaldia, Kilometroak, Araba Euskaraz and Nafarroa Oinez. Internally Euskaltel has promoted an inventory of associations and entities in which the employees altruistically take an active part. As a result, it has implemented policies in favour of disabled people, corporate volunteer policies and actions which take the internal commitment to Society. Institutional Relations Since Euskaltel joined the market ten years ago not a single day has gone by without contacting one of the institutions which represent and interact with the Basque market.
