Truespeed, our local ULTRA-fast installer of their 100Mb/s service, have been seeking signi cant investment to enable proper progress to be made and have announced that they have arranged £75 million from Aviva Investors. This major funding enables them to forge ahead now with their increased sta ng.

They are currently installing bre to the premises in Priston, , Stanton Wick, , Newton St Loe, Woolard, Burnett, and Badgworth, Biddisham and the Allertons. (This last group shows what can be done. Whilst these villages are outside our normal area, local people got more than 30% of their population to sign up, and work is underway.) Follow us on Facebook and Twitter Sheila Richardson, President 6 7 Rec Ground Trust Lots of activity up at the Rec this summer and, despite some technical hitches with equipment, as I write this the committee are in the last stages of prep for Village Day.

A mixed bag of news from the last month or two - closing the car park on some nights seems to have discouraged a fair bit of antisocial behaviour and e orts will continue to curb this. Dog poisoning has been reported (please do look out for powder left on the ground or discarded balls with suspicious llings) and fouling has been sporadically returning after an improvement in recent months - especially around the playground. On the upside, the trees behind the Club have been shorn, lots of borders tidied and one big autumn job will be play equipment refurb (which will mean the temporary removal of the lower goal).

Thanks to all our dedicated committee members and volunteers, the Rec is looking great at the moment but any help is always appreciated in keeping up such a valuable village resource. If you have any ideas, news or suggestions for us please do pop up to our meetings (3rd Thurs of each month) or contact via our Facebook page.

14 15 The First World War: October 1917 The war was now in its fourth year and already eleven families in the parish had received news of the deaths of their sons, fathers and brothers.

Private Percy Dix died of his wounds on October 5th 1917 in Flanders. He had been with his regiment, the 1st battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry during the Ypres Summer O ensive and was wounded in an attack at Langemarck on 4th October.

Percy was taken to eld hospital near Proven but died the following day and is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery.

He was 21 years old and the only son of Oliver and Louisa Dix.

Private Hubert John Hayes was born in Hallatrow and was the third son of Edward, a carpenter and Loveday Hayes of High Street, High Littleton. Hubert joined up in November 1915 and was enlisted in the 14th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and landed in France in January 1916.

Twenty two year old Hubert was killed on October 22nd during an attack on German trenches and his body was not found. His commanding o cer Major Sydney Baker wrote to the family to explain that Hubert had been shot by a sniper. Later in 1918 that same o cer was killed in action.

Hubert was employed as a gardener by Sir Audley Neald of Grittleton House near Chippenham. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Three other Hayes Ken Holloway & Son brothers served in the war and all survived, two in the Royal Engineers and another in the Royal Navy. Est 1974
