Occasionally it’s somewhere splendid, like Sydney Harbour or Long Beach Antigua, but generally it’s within a few miles of home. As a result we’ve got to know our village rather well.

High Littleton is not a single entity, but actually comprises several sub-divisions, each with its own particular characteristics, attributes and attractions. It helps explain why, say, Scobell Rise feels very diff erent to Rotcombe or Eastover to the High Street. Walk just 50 paces, and you can be aware of huge changes in the local environment, and that includes attitudes to litter. The two main sources of litter are that which is thrown from cars along the main road from Kingwell through to Hallatrow, and that which misses the Banes lorry on rubbish collection day. Much of the focus of our twice-yearly Litter Picks is to clear up that mess. But the rubbish soon returns unless we all take some responsibility and keep on top of the area particularly that around our own houses.

I know from organising the Litter Picks, that some parts of the village are always clean. It’s as if ‘litter-fairies’ spirit the rubbish away. These ‘litter fairies’ magically clear up the Banes-spill, the crisp packets and the coke cans to keep areas permanently clean. Of course, being fairies they are rarely seen, and they wear disguises so when you do, they often look like you or me. So let’s celebrate the litter-fairies whoever you are, and encourage others to discover their inner-litter-fairy. In the endless war against litter you can never have enough fairies.

At a practical level, we had an excellent Litter Pick on March 11th on a lovely Spring morning. I off er huge thanks to all who participated – no fairies here, just Litter- Leviathans! More than 30 bags of general rubbish plus a double mattress, tv, barbecue and two lots of fl y tipping.

Unique things have gone. In a word .... fantastic. Despite losing a couple of age groups, because it has a group of fantastic girls who play in the team and stand toe to toe with under 8s and under 12s, due to lack of numbers, we fi elded teams at under 7, 9, 10, the boys quite often leave them standing. This is their fi nal year of mini football before 11 and 13 in the Midsomer Norton Youth League. moving to Youth Football on Sunday afternoon and going from 7 a side to 9 a side. After a lot of hard really paid off . They are developing into a really good little squad. work this year they have fi nished runners up in Division 2 of their age group which is just brilliant. It’s been quite an interesting year as they’ve all grown up now - they went off for the Christmas break with squeaky voices and came back in the New Year with deep booming ones! Mood swings. Tempers. Strops. If you have teenage kids and pull your hair out then multiply it by 18 and you can imagine what it’s like at times. That said I wouldn’t change them for the world and the support of James Brain and Steve Jackson and the parents has made it all worthwhile.

We made our debut in the Somerset Cup where we travelled down to Bridgewater and played their team who made it through to the semi fi nals. It was a good experience for the boys. They deserve their bit of success and look forward to next season.

Looking forward, the Club looks great and we have already started recruiting for next season under 7s by running taster sessions for this year’s Year 1 children. We also plan to run a girls team; James Brain has volunteered to coach them and they have already had a training session.

If anyone is interested in joining one of our new teams please contact Phil on 07766 305222. We also have an amazing new website www.highlittletonfc.com where all information can be found.

14 15 Swan Transport Drivers win awards! Swan Transport’s dedicated team of volunteer drivers have been rewarded for all the great work they do for their local community at the Chairman’s Community Awards 2017. The award ceremony took place on Thursday 9th February at the Guildhall in Bath and not only did our hard working team of drivers win the ‘Volunteer Team of the Year Award’, but our longest serving driver Barbara Merrett also won the ‘Peter Duppa Miller Lifetime Achievement Award’. Barbara has been driving for Swan since its inception and has only recently retired after many years of service.

Our dedicated team of drivers support those within the B&NES area who are older, frail or disabled and on a low income, by taking them to things like health appointments or social activities. We receive lots of positive comments all the time about our drivers, including how our clients really appreciate being able to get out and about especially if they fi nd it diffi cult to use the bus for example.

Councillor Alan Hale of Bath & North East Somerset Council presented the drivers with their awards, and Swan are very grateful to everyone who was involved with organising the Awards, as we had a lovely evening with refreshments laid on for all the many groups and individuals who attended.

Would you like to drive as part of our award winning team? Please contact Swan Transport on 01761 439548 and speak to Sarah or Ann.
