Occasionally it’s somewhere splendid, like Sydney Harbour or Long Beach Antigua, but generally it’s within a few miles of home. As a result we’ve got to know our village rather well. High Littleton is not a single entity, but actually comprises several sub-divisions, each with its own particular characteristics, attributes and attractions. It helps explain why, say, Scobell Rise feels very diff erent to Rotcombe or Eastover to the High Street. Walk just 50 paces, and you can be aware of huge changes in the local environment, and that includes attitudes to litter. The two main sources of litter are that which is thrown from cars along the main road from Kingwell through to Hallatrow, and that which misses the Banes lorry on rubbish collection day. Much of the focus of our twice-yearly Litter Picks is to clear up that mess. But the rubbish soon returns unless we all take some responsibility and keep on top of the area particularly that around our own houses. I know from organising the Litter Picks, that some parts of the village are always clean. It’s as if ‘litter-fairies’ spirit the rubbish away. These ‘litter fairies’ magically clear up the Banes-spill, the crisp packets and the coke cans to keep areas permanently clean. Of course, being fairies they are rarely seen, and they wear disguises so when you do, they often look like you or me. So let’s celebrate the litter-fairies whoever you are, and encourage others to discover their inner-litter-fairy. In the endless war against litter you can never have enough fairies. At a practical level, we had an excellent Litter Pick on March 11th on a lovely Spring morning. I off er huge thanks to all who participated – no fairies here, just Litter- Leviathans! More than 30 bags of general rubbish plus a double mattress, tv, barbecue and two lots of fl y tipping.
