Brooklyn College Associate Dean of the School of Business

THE OPPORTUNITY

Brooklyn College, part of the City University of , invites inquiries, nominations, and expressions of interest for the position of Associate Dean of the School of Business. Under the leadership of inaugural Dean Dr. Willie Hopkins, the Brooklyn College School of Business is preparing to become a fully AACSB-accredited business school that will lead in preparing young business and management professionals to meet the challenges of a complex global business environment.

Reporting directly to Dean Hopkins, the Associate Dean will collaborate with faculty and department chairs to prepare the school for its initial AACSB accreditation, assist with strategic planning processes, assess and revise curriculum and programs as needed, develop and implement an enrollment management plan, and complete other tasks as required. The Associate Dean may also be expected to perform some teaching duties.

The School of Business consists of three departments (i.e., Accounting, Economics, and Finance and Business Management) and is the third largest public business school in New York State. This is a particularly exciting period of remarkable evolution and growth for Brooklyn College, which recently created four new schools, each led by an inaugural dean responsible for articulating a vision and developing a strategy for the College’s continued expansion and success.

BROOKLYN COLLEGE BACKGROUND

Brooklyn College is a dynamic institution in the City University of New York system with a proud history of academic excellence in both undergraduate and graduate studies. Since its founding in 1930, the College has offered men and women, many of them immigrants or the children of immigrants, often the first in their families to go to college—a high-quality, affordable education leading to a productive career and a life rich in opportunities.

The College offers rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs in five schools: Business; Education; and Social Sciences; Natural and Behavioral Sciences; and Visual, Media and Performing Arts. A nationally recognized core curriculum, a commitment to experiential learning and engaged research, and growing opportunities for study abroad prepare our graduates to provide strong leadership for the 21st-century global economy.

Nationally recognized for academic excellence, Brooklyn College is considered one of the nation’s best value colleges by , and it is one of only twenty colleges nationwide to receive an “A” from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. U.S. News & World Report ranks Brooklyn College among the best regional public universities in the Northeast, and Forbes includes it among the top colleges in the country based on “…educational outcomes, not reputations.”

The 16,500 students enrolled at Brooklyn College reflect the tremendous diversity and rich immigrant experience of ’s population. Their families come from 150 different countries, and they speak more than one hundred languages.

Over the past several years, Brooklyn College has made significant progress on many key measures of success. Graduation rates are on the rise, freshman-to-sophomore retention rates

have increased significantly, and new students possess higher GPAs and SAT scores. The faculty continue to receive international recognition, garnering many prestigious grants and awards to advance their research and scholarship.

Several exciting initiatives are now underway to sustain and grow the college’s academic programs. Most notably, $18.7 million in funding has been secured to establish a Graduate School of Cinema at . Poised to prepare the skilled workforce needed to fuel the state’s growing entertainment industry, it will be the nation’s only graduate school fully housed on a working film lot. It will also be a more affordable option for students from all economic backgrounds, with the cost of a degree less than one-half that of comparable programs nationwide. The college has also initiated a multi-year process to achieve accreditation for its new School of Business, which serves thousands of students pursuing degrees in accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing. Once accreditation is earned, it will be the only AACSB-accredited institution in Brooklyn.

Guided by the college’s facilities master plan, planning and construction are underway on several capital projects. The college recently opened a new athletics field, which meets NCAA regulations for soccer and softball, paving the way for a new women’s soccer team. Construction of the new Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts is on track to conclude in 2014. Architectural design has been completed for the new Roosevelt Science Teaching Commons, which will provide state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms for all of the sciences, and a sustainable green space for our entire campus community. The college is also planning to address the serious unmet facilities needs of our School of Business on adjacent property acquired by the Brooklyn College Foundation in 2011.

Over the past decade, the Brooklyn College faculty has experienced a renaissance, expanding and diversifying with the hiring of more than 250 new scholar-teachers who now make up 50 percent of the full-time teaching faculty. Its professors have received prestigious Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Woodrow Wilson fellowships and are the recipients of major sponsored research support from national funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Education and NASA. , world- renowned concert pianist and contemporary American music performer, joined the faculty in 2008. -winning journalist and Brooklyn College alumnus Paul Moses returned to the College in 2001 to teach in CUNY’s oldest journalism program. The faculty also includes Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and writer Edwin Burrows, Guggenheim Fellowship composer Tania León, –winning playwright , internationally recognized computer theorist Rohit Parikh, esteemed audiologist Shlomo Silman, leading expert in microalgae biotechnology Juergen Polle, and political scientist and author .

The tradition of academic excellence at Brooklyn College is reflected in the notable accomplishments of its graduates. More than three thousand alumni are listed in the series of Marquis Who’s Who directories; more than three hundred alumni are presidents, vice presidents, or chairpersons of the boards of major corporations. Many Brooklyn College graduates continue their studies at prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania, and they have one of the highest acceptance rates into medical schools among the CUNY senior colleges. A variety of advisement programs ensure that students are well advised and effectively mentored throughout their course of study. The First College Year program facilitates the transition to college with summer bridge programs and Learning Communities that strengthen bonds among new students and the faculty. International education programs offer study abroad opportunities around the world. Brooklyn College professors provide undergraduate and graduate students with a wide variety of research opportunities, service learning, and community-based learning initiatives.

Brooklyn College Academic Reorganization

After remarkable evolution and growth, Brooklyn College has become more complex and ambitious. Recognizing the need to enhance strategic decision making, promote academic visibility, and improve efficiencies, four new schools of business, humanities and social sciences, natural and behavioral sciences, and visual, media and performing arts, were created in summer 2011, joining the existing school of education, each led by a dean. With the faculty, they are shaping the future of a broad range of academic programs.

The Faculty

In the last decade, Brooklyn College has hired 250 new faculty members – as a result of expanded enrollment and in response to retirements of faculty members who were hired in the early 1970’s. These new faculty members have significantly changed the profile of the faculty both in areas of expertise and in diversity. Additional retirements due to the 2011 Early Retirement Incentive Program are resulting in new hires for 2012, 2013, and 2014. Brooklyn College faculty members have terminal degrees from many of the most distinguished institutions in the country.

The faculty of Brooklyn College is represented by the CUNY-wide Professional Staff Congress, its collective bargaining agent. The contractual faculty workload is 21 hours annually. Efforts to protect junior faculty as their research careers develop have resulted in a reduced workload of 24 hours, which must be taken in the first five years of appointment.

Brooklyn College Students

Composed largely of traditional college-age students, the entering freshman class for fall 2012 numbered 1,148, while new transfers numbered 1,680. The number of entering graduate students was 1,072 in the fall 2012 semester. Total enrollment for the 2012-2013 academic year is more than 16,524.

College admissions criteria are increasingly selective, and high-achieving high school students apply in ever-larger numbers for admission to the William E. Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College as well as other college honors programs. Graduate students seek out the College for its highly regarded and competitive programs across the disciplines, with keen

The College participates in NCAA Division III athletics and offers an exciting and energetic intramural sports program.
