Interview with Frisner Augustin—3/24/1982 East 96th Street, East Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York Frisner’s Life in Haiti L: This is an interview with Frisner Augustin, Master Drummer from Haiti. First, I just want to get the facts—the day that you were born, where you were born… F: Okay, the day I born is one, three, forty-eight, right? So, I born in Port- au-Prince. But my mother born in Port-a-Prince, but my grandmother born in Jacmel. L: Is that your mother’s mother? F: My grandmother, yeah. But my father born in Port-au-Prince, but, you know, my father’s father born in Léogane. I come from two parent, you know, two pärent—parent or pärent, I don’t know. Because, you know, English is not my language. But in my country they speak Creole. But everybody try to speak French. You’re supposed to go to school to speak French. But my parent don’t have any money to push me very good in big school, and I try to learn by some friend. But, in Haiti, my father, you know, time I got to be about six years old, and my father left my mother, and, you know, my mother can’t help me to push me in school. Okay, I got all my parent, my uncle play drum and be travel lot. He go to St. Thomas, St. Croix, Puerto Rico, and New York and go back to Haiti, St. Vincent and go back to Haiti. And soon I grow up, I say, I want to learn how to play drum. -

Finally, I would like to thank the support and contributions of my peers in the Economic and Social History Senior Thesis class. 4 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the impact of city policy changes and the processes of gentrification on 1980s nightlife subculture in New York City. What are important to this work are the contributions and influence of nightlife subculture to greater New York City history through fashion, music, and art. I intend to prove that, in combination with the city’s gradual revanchism of neighborhood properties, the self-destructive nature of this after-hours sector has led to its own demise. -

Gillian Laub CV 2021
Gillian Laub (b.1975, Chappaqua, New York) is a photographer and filmmaker based in New York. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in comparative literature before studying photography at the International Center of Photography, where her love of visual storytelling and family narratives began. Laub’s first monograph, Testimony (Aperture 2007), began as a response to the media coverage during the second Intifada in the Middle East, and a desire to create a dialogue between apparent enemies. This work is comprised of portraits and testimonies from Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, Lebanese, and Palestinians all directly and indirectly affected by the complicated geopolitical context in which they lived. Laub spent over a decade working in Georgia exploring issues of lingering racism in the American South. This work became Laub’s first feature length, directed and produced, documentary film, Southern Rites that premiered on HBO in May 2015. Her monograph, Southern Rites (Damiani, 2015) and travelling exhibition by the same title came out in conjunction with the film and are being used for an educational outreach campaign, in schools and institutions across the country. Southern Rites was named one of the best photo books of 2015 by TIME, Smithsonian, Vogue, LensCulture, and American Photo. It was also nominated for a Lucie award and Humanitas award. "Riveting...In a calm, understated tone, Southern Rites digs deep to expose the roots that have made segregated proms and other affronts possible. Southern Rites is a portrait of the inequities that lead to disaster on the streets of cities like Baltimore and Ferguson, Mo.” - The New York Times Laub has been interviewed on NPR, CNN, MSNBC, Good Morning America, Times Talks and numerous others. -

Behavioral Science PSY-1 DRAWING AN IMAGINARY WORLD: THE EFFECTS ON SHORT-TERM MOOD IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDREN Irfa Kafayat (UG) and Jennifer Drake, Department of Psychology, Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY. Previous research has shown that drawing improves short-term mood in both adults and children when used as a form of distraction rather expression (Drake & Winner, 2012; 2013). This study examined the advantages of a distraction drawing task that calls for creation of an imaginary world vs. a non-imaginary world. When children use their imagination to create an imaginary world, their emotions are directed at the events in that imaginary world rather than ongoing, actual events (Harris, 2000). This study included 60 children between the ages of 6 and 8 (M = 7;6; SD = 0;10; 32 females). In order to induce a sad mood, I asked participants to think of a disappointing event. After the negative mood induction, I randomly assigned children: to draw a picture of a real event (a dog chasing a robber) or a picture of an imaginary event (dragon chasing a witch). With the premise that imagination and fictional events can help improve mood, I predicted that those in the imagine condition, children who drew a “dragon chasing a witch” would have a greater mood improvement than those in the real condition. Mood was measured before and after the mood induction and after drawing. Mood improvement did not differ between the two conditions, (1, 59) = 0.366, p = 0.548. However, the imaginary condition was marginally more absorbed in the activity than the real condition, F (1, 59) = 3.109, p = .083.
