The women’s soccer team won two of three matches this week before falling to Elizabethtown College in MAC Commonwealth Conference action, 5-1, to end the week. Moravian shutout arch-rival , 1-0, and Delaware Valley College, 2-0, for its two wins last week.

Senior forward Carli Miller (Wyomissing/Wilson West Lawn HS), the all-time leading scorer in Moravian history, surpassed another milestone last week, netting her 50th career goal in the victory over Delaware Valley. Miller scored both goals in the win over the Aggies and had the only goal in the loss to Elizabethtown. She added an assist on the only goal in the Muhlenberg match to boost her career total to 126 points on 52 goals and 22 assists.

Junior midfielder Becky Matijasich (Alpharetta, GA/Wilson West Lawn {PA} HS) scored the goal in the victory versus Muhlenberg College. She added an assist on one of Carli Miller’s goals against Delaware Valley. Junior midfielder Marisa Confuorto (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hillsborough HS) had assists on Carli Miller’s other two goals.

Junior goalie Becky Roe (Worcester, NY/Worcester Central HS) and freshman goalie Neali Miller (Wyomissing/Wilson West Lawn HS) saw their combined shutout streak end at 413 minutes with the first goal by Elizabethtown. This week Roe played 255 minutes with eight saves while Neali Miller played 15 minutes had one save.

The men’s soccer team split a pair of matches last week, falling to arch-rival Muhlenberg College, 1-0, and defeating , 2-1, in MAC Commonwealth Conference action.

Junior midfielder Rich Tate (Warrington/LaSalle College HS) and freshman midfielder David Kurvink (Bethlehem/Liberty HS) scored the goals in the victory over Susquehanna. Kurvink netted the game winning goal with his first collegiate goal. Junior forward Van Pham (Reading/Reading HS) and sophomore midfielders Paul Melniczek (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic HS) and Evan Weller (Sinking Spring/Wilson West Lawn HS) had assists in the match.

Senior goalie Ryan Shick (Jamison/Central Bucks East HS) made 12 saves in the two matches and evened his career record at 19-19-2 with the win over Susquehanna.

Football – 0-3 (MAC Commonwealth Conference 0-2, MAC 0-3) Last Week – Lost to *Lebanon Valley, 24-13. *MAC Commonwealth game This Week – Sat., Oct. 2nd at *, 1:00 p.m. *MAC Commonwealth game

The football team lost its third game of 1999 and its fifth straight game, falling to Lebanon Valley College 24-13. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their first play of the game early in the first quarter on a 21-yard pass from Rob Petrosky (North Catasauqua/Catasauqua HS) to sophomore wide receiver Keith Moore (Perkasie/Pennridge HS) with 11:14 remaining in the first quarter. The drive was set-up by a 34-yard punt return by junior cornerback Doug Joseph (Allentown/Parkland HS). The Greyhounds scored on their first drive of the second half on a six-yard pass from Petrosky to freshman tight end Rick Kulp (Walnutport/ Northampton HS).

Moravian used three quarterbacks in the game with Petrosky, Moyer and freshman Charlie Bowden (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial HS) combining for 154 yards on 15 of 28 attempts. The trio was intercepted four times and completed passes to ten different players. Junior tailback P.J. Jankowicz (Belle Mead, NJ/Hillsborough HS) led the ground game with 56 yards on 15 carries. Senior fullback Kirk Harryn (Bethlehem/Freedom HS) gained 33 yards on ten attempts.

Sophomore wide receiver Mike Buscio (Philadelphia/Triton Regional HS) blocked an extra-point attempt in the first quarter. Junior linebacker Phil Black (Easton/Easton HS) led the Greyhound defense with 12 tackles and one of the team’s four sacks. Senior free safety Steve DiRenzo (Netcong, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional HS) and Joseph each had interceptions in the game.

Women’s Tennis – 8-0 (MAC Commonwealth Conference 4-0, MAC 5-0) Last Week – Defeated *Albright, 5-4; Defeated East Stroudsburg, 9-0; Defeated *Juniata, 6-3. *MAC Commonwealth Conference This Week – Tues., Sept. 28th vs. Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, 4:00 p.m.; Thurs., Sept. 30th vs. *Elizabethtown College, 3:30 p.m.; Sat., Oct. 2nd at *Messiah College, 1:00 p.m. *MAC Commonwealth Conference match

The Lady Greyhounds kept their winning streak alive and extended it to 38 straight matches with a trio of wins last week. Moravian played its toughest match so far in 1999 last Tuesday, defeating Albright College, 5-4, in MAC Commonwealth Conference action. The Lady Greyhounds trailed 4-3 in the match but singles wins by junior Autumn Zander (Riegelsville/Bethlehem Catholic HS), sophomore Corinne Kleinsmith (Shillington/Governor Mifflin HS) and freshman Jen Genevese (Whitehall/Whitehall HS) lifted the squad to the win. Moravian’s other matches were a 9-0 win over NCAA Division II East Stroudsburg University and a 6- 3 win over .

In doubles action this week, the duo of senior Lyn Ramsey (Perkasie/Pennridge HS) and junior Courtney Rice (Nazareth/Nazareth Area HS) posted a 3-0 record to stay perfect at 7-0 this fall. Kleinsmith and sophomore Katie Copf (Allentown/Salisbury HS) each had 3-0 weeks in singles action to raise their undefeated records to 8-0. Zander is 7-0 on the year.

Women’s Cross Country 0-0 (MAC Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MAC 0-0) Last Week – No meet scheduled This Week – Sat., Oct 2nd at Frostburg State (MD) College Invitational, Frostburg, MD

The Moravian women’s cross-country team was off this past weekend after winning the Muhlenberg College Invitational on September 18th. The Lady Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday, October 2nd at the Frostburg State (MD) College Invitational. The course is the same one that the 1999 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional will be run on in November. Greyhound Weekly Update, September 27, 1999 (-4444-)

The Lady Greyhounds lost a shootout in their only match last week, falling to Juniata College, 4-3, in MAC Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday. Moravian led 3-2 halfway through the second half of the match. Over the last year and a half, the Lady Greyhounds have lost 14 of 17 matches by just one goal. The other three losses are by two goals.

Junior forward Brooke Dancho (Bethlehem/Freedom HS) and sophomores forward Elisa Gerstel (Warminster/William Tennent HS) and midfielder Leslie Siebler (Easton/Wilson HS) scored the Lady Greyhounds goals against Juniata. Sophomore goalie Samantha Fillian (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall HS) made 10 saves in the loss.

Women’s Volleyball – 9-2 (MAC Commonwealth Conference 2-1, MAC 4-1) Last Week – Defeated #Scranton, 3-1; Defeated *Lebanon Valley, 3-0; Defeated #Lycoming, 3-0. *MAC Commonwealth Conference match, #MAC match This Week – Wed., Sept. 29th vs. *Albright College, 7:00 p.m. Fri. & Sat., Oct. 1st & 2nd at Trinity (TX) University Invitational, TBA. *MAC Commonwealth Conference match

The women’s volleyball team won three matches last week, defeating the , 3-1, and sweeping Lebanon Valley College and , 3-0.

Senior outside hitter Amy Sandt (Allentown/William Allen HS) made 49 kills, 45 digs, two blocks and had a .333 hitting percentage to lead the Lady Greyhounds. Senior setter Kaitie Kramer (Bethlehem/ Bethlehem Catholic HS) had 127 assists, 14 kills, 29 digs and five service aces. Junior middle hitter Becky Falk (Allentown/Dieruff HS) added 37 kills and four blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Sara Walkiewicz (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had 15 kills and 41 digs in the three matches. Junior outside hitter Kendra Insley (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood HS) added 20 kills and 21 digs while junior middle hitter Sara Young (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock HS) had 21 kills. Junior defensive specialists Emily Shonk (Ligonier/Ligonier HS) and Natalie Balaziuk (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) both made contributions last week. Shonk had seven service aces and 36 digs while Balaziuk added ten service aces and 28 digs.

The Moravian men’s cross-country team was off this past weekend after winning the Muhlenberg College Invitational on September 18th.
