Reed graduated from Bucknell in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He worked as Jim Reed finished his 13th season as the head coach of the Susquehanna women’s basketball team in 2017-18. His overall record at Susquehanna is 167-161 (.509 ). Combined with his 27 wins as head coach at Wilkes, he has accumulated 194 career victories.

Reed was named the head women’s basketball and head women’s golf coach at Susquehanna in August 2005 after serving as the head women’s basketball coach at from 2001-2005. He guided the Susquehanna women’s golf team until 2012.

Reed is no stranger to Susquehanna, having served as an assistant women’s basketball coach under Mark Hribar for three seasons (1989-1992) and as a men’s basketball assistant under Frank Marcinek for two seasons (1992-1994). During his previous stints at Susquehanna, Reed also served as an assistant baseball coach from 1991-1994 and as the head women’s tennis coach from 1993-94.
