Departmental History
After many years as a combined Department of History and Political Science, in 1935 the UNC Department of Political Science was established as an independent department in the College of Arts and Sciences. Given its background, initial instruction focused on the historical development of American political institutions and upon European and Latin American politics, an uncommon combination fostered by President Frank Porter Graham, whose international vision helped “globalize” the University before that word entered the English language.
This continued in the years immediately after World War II, when the Department grew significantly alongside the growth in the student body, many members of which were beneficiaries of the G.I. bill. Included in this growth was a dramatic diversification of course offerings, eventually leading to today’s five subfields – American politics, international relations, comparative politics, political theory and methodology.
While funding for the Department’s development came primarily from the people of North Carolina, both as individual gifts and as appropriations from the state legislature, additional support has come from private and federal government foundations, including a very substantial “Center of Excellence Grant” from the National Institutes of Health, the National Defense Education Art, and the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations. These grants helped the Department to assume major leadership roles in UNC’s interdisciplinary centers, including the Institute for Research in Social Science and its Social Science Statistical Laboratory, plus all of the University’s area studies programs.
Today’s Department seeks to build upon this history, first and foremost by providing an undergraduate education of the highest quality, fulfilling the University’s charter to “prepare the rising generation for the duties of life.” This can only be achieved by fostering creative research to expand our understanding of politics, broadly defined at the local, state, national and global levels.
