16 17 PASTORAL CARE We believe that all pupils, both boarding and day, are of equal worth, and that they are entitled to be treated with equal respect, courtesy and consideration at all times, regardless of their sex, race, religion, abilities or social background. King’s College aims to provide education in a disciplined and caring environment. Respect and consideration for others, independence of thought and self- motivation are of prime importance, and pupils are encouraged to participate fully in the activities of the school. All members of the school have a duty • to recognise, appreciate and acknowledge the contribution made by each sex, and by different nationalities, to the richness of the school’s academic, social, cultural and sporting life. • to treat each other fairly and with sensitivity recognising that a person’s sex, race, religion, abilities or social circumstances are not subjects for negative comment or behaviour of any kind. All staff, pupils and parents are expected to support the ethos of the school and to promote a civilised, friendly, compassionate and secure environment. The school recognises the importance of the triangular relationship between pupils, parents and staff, and communication is encouraged at all times. House- masters, Housemistresses and House staff are especially important in this respect.
CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE The school rules are published below, but the essential principles are as follows: • Pupils must at all times use their common sense. Any breach of common sense will be treated as a breach of the school rules. • Pupils must obey the laws of the land. Every pupil must show respect for others at all times, and bullying should always be reported to an adult. The school seeks to reward pupils and must also occasionally apply sanctions and reprimands. Such punishments will include verbal reprimands, temporary removal of privileges, detention, restrictions during leisure time and manual work in the school grounds. 18 If a pupil feels that a punishment is unreasonably severe or unjustified, then he or she may appeal to his or her Housemaster or Housemistress, any member of staff or the Headmaster, or contact his or her parents. For more serious offences, such as bullying or involvement in drugs or stealing, and for persistent breaches of any school rule, the school reserves the right to exclude pupils from school on a temporary or permanent basis. It also reserves the right to conduct drug tests where there is reasonable cause for concern. Each pupil is under the care of a House Parent. Tutors also provide valuable support. Parents and pupils are encouraged to refer problems or difficulties to the House Parent at all times but all members of staff accept a pastoral role in order to promote the welfare of pupils. The Chaplain, Deputy Heads, Medical Centre staff and Headmaster are also always available; their telephone numbers are published at the end of the diary. Senior pupils are also appointed prefects, and their most important function is to look after the pupils in their care.
SPIRITUAL GROWTH King’s College is a Christian school, part of the Woodard Corporation and an Anglican Foundation. As such, the Eucharist is central to our life together. A Eucharist for the whole school community is held every Wednesday morning and on some Sundays. There is also an act of worship on Friday mornings. As an expression of our unity, all pupils and teaching staff are expected to attend during the week. There is also worship for boarders every Sunday. Those of other denominations may choose to attend a suitable Sunday service elsewhere by arrangement with their House Parent. Other creative opportunities for worship are arranged at various times and include early morning prayer and meditation and ‘Oasis’ on Tuesday evenings. All pupils are warmly encouraged to attend. Every year pupils are invited to join the Confirmation training course culminating in the Lent term Confirmation service in the chapel with the Bishop of Bath and Wells. Every member of the school community is encouraged on the journey of faith and the happiness and well-being of each individual pupil are the most important aims of King’s College. If you are unhappy in any way, please do not hesitate to seek help and advice at any time. In case of personal need, the Chaplain is always available on 328211 or 328137 (home). 18 19 WORRIES AND COMPLAINTS – A Guide for Pupils This guide explains what you should do if you feel worried about something and what you may do if you wish to complain about how you are, or have been, treated. Much of what follows may seem obvious to you, but it is important for you to realise that the School will want to help you if you have a problem that is making you unhappy.
You may just wish to talk to someone or you may wish to make a complaint.
Either way this advice will assist you to decide what to do.
“What do I do if I just want to talk to someone?” Remember you have close friends who may be able to help, or perhaps a senior boy or girl to whom you feel you can turn. Your House Parent or Tutor is always ready to help, or any other members of staff (including support staff) you know and to whom you feel you can comfortably talk. ANTI- BULLYING ADVICE TO PUPILS WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying happens when someone is intentionally made to feel physically, emotionally or mentally injured. • It is meant to be hurtful • It may be physical (e.g. hitting, pinching, pushing and shoving, kicking, spitting) • It may be verbal (e.g. teasing, spreading rumours) • It may be indirect (e.g. excluding someone by not talking to them or leaving them out of a group) • It may involve hiding your belongings or taking things away from you (e.g. tuck, money) • It may involve using your things (clothes, toiletries, DVDs etc.) against your wishes • It may be manipulative (e.g. getting someone else to hurt or tease someone) • It may involve complicity in someone else’s action (e.g. as a bystander who looks the other way) • It is often hidden and may involve actions or comments that are racist, sexist, homophobic, or which focus on disabilities or perceived differences • It can happen anywhere and at any time
20 21 WHAT IS CYBERBULLYING Cyberbullying is an aggressive, intentional act carried out by a group or individuals using electronic forms of communication. • It can happen by email, text message or voicemail • It can happen on social network sites like Facebook • It can involve cruel words or stories • It can involve photographs, films or recordings • It is quite often an illegal activity and not just against school rules • The police can become involved
EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT NOT TO BE BULLIED –YOUR RIGHTS • To inform someone in authority of any bullying and to be listened to • To be respected and to be given the chance to learn effectively and develop as a person • To be able to live in the school community without fear and to feel safe at all times • To have your own unique contribution to school life valued • To have your personal property respected STATEMENT OF INTENT King’s College is committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all its pupils, so that they can learn in a relaxed secure and supportive atmosphere.. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable in this school. We recognise there may be strong bonds of loyalty between friends, but bullying is too damaging to be kept hidden. King’s College is an open school. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to mention it to an adult they trust. This is an expectation of all pupils; it is not “dobbing in” or “grassing”.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE BEING BULLIED (OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS) • Tell a friend, tell a teacher or tell your parents. It won’t stop unless you do. • If you find this hard to do, think about writing a note to your parents, or talking to someone outside your close family. • Your Housemaster/mistress needs to know what is going on. Find a time to talk to him/her in private. • If you find this hard to do, think about talking to the Chaplain, the School Counsellor or someone in the Medical Centre. • Ask the person you confide in to write down what you have told them. • If you see someone being bullied, tell someone! Don’t try and sort it out yourself. • Remember, people who are being bullied need friends, so if you can help someone who is unhappy, please do. Bullying will not be tolerated at King’s College: boys and girls who bully must expect to be dealt with; they will also receive appropriate help. Boys and girls who continue to bully jeopardise their right to be members of our community.
22 23 ANTI-CYBERBULLYING CODE: ADVICE TO PUPILS Being sent an abusive or threatening text message, or email or seeing nasty comments about yourself on a website, can be really upsetting. This code gives you seven important tips to protect yourself and your friends from getting caught up in cyberbullying, and advice on to how to report it when it does happen.
1. Always respect others Remember that when you send a message to someone, you cannot see the impact that your words or images may have on the other person. That is why it is important to always show respect to people and be careful what you say online or what images you send. What you think is a joke may really hurt someone else. Always ask permission before you take a photo of someone. If you receive a rude or nasty message or picture about someone else, do not forward it. You could be assisting a bully and even be accused of cyberbullying yourself. You could also be breaking the law.
2. Think before you send It is important to think before you send any images or text about yourself or someone else by email or mobile phone, or before you post information on a website. Remember that what you send can be made public very quickly and could stay online forever. Do you really want your teacher, parents or future employer to see that photo?
3. Treat your password like your toothbrush Don’t let anyone know your passwords. It is a good idea to change them on a regular basis. Choosing hard-to-guess passwords with symbols or numbers will help stop people hacking into your account and pretending to be you. Remember to only give your mobile number or personal website address to trusted friends.
4. Block the Bully Most responsible websites and services allow you to block or report someone who is behaving badly. Make use of these features, they are there for a reason!
5. Don’t retaliate or reply Replying to bullying messages, particularly in anger, is just what the bully wants.
24 6. Save the evidence Learn how to keep records of offending messages, pictures or online conversations. These will help you demonstrate to others what is happening and can be used by your school, internet service provider, mobile phone company, or even the police to investigate the cyberbullying.
7. Make sure you tell You have a right not to be harassed and bullied online. There are people that can help: • Tell an adult you trust who can help you to report it to the right place, or call a helpline like ChildLine on 0800 1111 in confidence. • Tell the provider of the service you have been bullied on (e.g. your mobile-phone operator or social-network provider). Check their websites to see where to report. • Tell your school. Your Housemaster/Housemistress, tutor or any member of staff will support you and will ensure the person bullying you is dealt with.
Finally, don’t just stand there. If you see cyberbullying going on, support the victim and report the bullying. How would you feel if no one stood up for you?
SCHOOL RULES Pupils must at all times use their common sense; any obvious breach of common sense will be treated as a breach of the school rules. A breach of the law of the land is automatically a serious breach of the school rules.
Every pupil must show respect for others at all times. Bullying, stealing and involvement in drug abuse will not be tolerated.
More detailed rules and regulations concerning all aspects of school life are published from time to time. These, together with any additions or alterations that may occasionally be made, must be known by everyone and observed at all times.
Most of school life is a matter of custom rather than of regulation, and pupils in their observance of the rules are expected to follow the spirit as well as the letter of the law.
24 25 DRUGS Substance abuse of any kind is strictly forbidden, and may lead to the pupil being asked to leave the school. The school reserves the right to ask for an independent drugs test when there are reasonable grounds to suggest that it is necessary.
ALCOHOL Alcohol must not be bought or brought into school, nor consumed either on or off the premises while the pupil is in the care of the school. The only exceptions to this are the Senior Social Club, school social functions supervised by a member of staff and any Sixth Form restaurant exeats.
SEX EDUCATION AND CONDUCT BETWEEN BOYS AND GIRLS The school aims to promote in pupils a respectful and informed understanding of sexual attitudes and behaviour, and to encourage confident, responsible decision- making in their relationships. The school also ensures that pupils are aware of the relevant law regarding sexual behaviour. Pupils are free to develop friendships and relationships, but there should be no public displays of affection and no sexual contact while pupils are in the care of the school. The latter is very likely to result in pupils being asked to leave the school. Pupils are not allowed in the sleeping areas or study bedrooms of the opposite sex.
SMOKING ETC Smoking is strictly forbidden. The possession of matches, lighters, joss sticks, candles, e-cigarettes, etc. is also forbidden. Aerosols - the use of aerosols in houses is forbidden.
CLOTHING / APPEARANCE Regulations for both formal and leisure wear are shown separately on the current clothing lists. Leisure wear may be worn after lessons. Scarves, gloves, coats, caps must not be worn in the dining hall. Hair should be neat, of a sensible length and must not be dyed. Extremes of style are not allowed. In all matters of dress and appearance the school’s judgment is final.
26 SIGNING OUT RULES • All pupils must sign out of house when leaving the school campus and sign in on their return. • Signing out/in is not necessary if pupils are attending a sports fixture or trip organised by the school. • If pupils wish to leave the school campus they must receive permission from House Parents or their deputies. The exception to this is for official town leave or if the activity is part of a school commitment, e.g. KCCS, an away fixture etc. • Day pupils must sign out of house when they leave the school campus to go home. • If pupils wish to leave the house during prep they must seek permission from the duty house tutor and sign out.
EXEATS There is a clear expectation that boarders will be at school for most weekends, but a number of exeats will be allowed, subject to school commitments and the House Parent’s permission.
Parents have been asked to contact the House Parent by email well in advance before arranging a weekend exeat. Exeats begin when all school commitments have been fulfilled. Generally all pupils will be involved in sports fixtures most Saturday afternoons. If a boarder wishes to visit a friend’s house for an exeat, then the House Parent requires email approval from both sets of parents. Attendance at the Remembrance Service in November is compulsory for all pupils.
Exeats begin when pupils are picked up by parents, when reaching home, or when leaving Taunton. School rules continue to apply in Taunton, particularly on the journey to and from the railway and bus stations.
If pupils wish to go home on a Sunday, parents need to confirm this first with the relevant House Parent.
Subject to house signing-out rules, pupils may go into town at times as shown in the town time rules. Casuals are permitted on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday there is a House Roll Call at 6.30pm.
26 27 Apart from the above, the permission of a member of staff is needed to leave the school premises unless the activity is part of a school commitment, e.g. KCCS, an away match etc.
Weekend exeats: providing school commitments permit, a pupil may go home, with a parent’s permission in the form of an email, to the home of another pupil, once each half term. In the Michaelmas term, one further weekend is permitted. Weekend exeats begin when all school commitments have been fulfilled. ALL exeats end at 9.30pm. TOWN TIME RULES • All pupils must sign out when they leave the house and sign in on their return. • All pupils must attend registration and house roll calls as published. • All pupils must have relevant house staff contact details in case of emergency and be aware of and follow school advice on personal safety. • All licensed premises and off-licences are out of bounds to all King’s pupils.
Third, Fourth and Fifth Forms Pupils may go into town as follows: • Wednesday afternoons - when not committed to an activity. All pupils must return to school by 6.00pm • Saturdays - pupils may go into town after lesson 5, provided the pupil does not have a school commitment. All pupils must return for the 6.30pm House Roll Call. • Sundays - after all commitments have been honoured. • Pupils must return by 5.00pm • Fifth Form pupils will be allowed into town under the same rules as those for Sixth Formers after the Summer Half Term. Pupils must go into town in groups of at least two Sixth Form Pupils may go into town as follows: • Weekdays - any afternoon after 2.00pm, provided the pupil does not have other school commitments. All pupils must be back by 6.30pm (4.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the winter timetable). • Saturdays - pupils may go into town after lesson 5, provided the pupil
28 does not have a school commitment. All pupils must return for the 6.30pm House Roll Call. • Sundays - after all commitments have been honoured. • Pupils must return by 5.00pm Prefects and School Prefects Weekdays - prefects and school prefects may go into town any day after break, provided they do not have other school commitments. All pupils are reminded that town leave is a privilege which will be withdrawn for breaches of school discipline and for academic under-performance / lack of effort. Civilised and polite behaviour in town is essential and pupils should make every effort not to gather in large groups which can inconvenience members of the public.
MONEY AND PROPERTY • Pupils must not have large sums of money in their possession. • Personal property should be respected at all times • The buying and selling of personal property is allowed only with House Parent’s permission and a written receipt is required. Borrowing without the owner’s permission is forbidden.
MOBILE PHONES • These are allowed in school at the owner’s own risk and should only be used with discretion and cause no disturbance to others. They should not be seen in public. • They must not be used (and should either be switched off or in silent mode) in lessons, the Chapel, the Library, the Woodard Room or in any school function. • They must not be used for calls during prep or after lights out. • They should be in silent mode in the Dining Hall and should not be used for calls in the Dining Hall. • If mobile phone use breaches the rules shown above, members of staff may confiscate the phone in line with school policy.
28 29 MOTOR VEHICLES AND BICYCLES • No pupil may have a car or motorcycle at or near the school during term time, unless their parent/guardian has received written permission from the school. Parking permits must be displayed whenever cars are parked on the site and vehicles must be driven with due care and attention. Pupils may not travel in a car or on a motorcycle driven by another pupil or anyone else under the age of 25. In exceptional circumstances permission may be sought by parents, but in receiving permission parents assume full responsibility for the journeys. • Any pupil wishing to take driving lessons must have their House Parent’s permission, use a recognised driving school, and ensure that lessons are not arranged during morning study periods or other commitments. • Bicycles may be brought to school, but they must be properly insured by parents and they must have a strong and secure lock. • Pupils may only ride bicycles in leisure time; under no circumstances are bicycles to be used as transport to and from lessons. Bicycles must be roadworthy and should be kept locked in the designated House areas. • Under no circumstances should bicycles be ridden after dark. Cycling on any grass is forbidden. There must be no cycling between the Music School and Briar Lea tennis courts. OUT OF BOUNDS • The study bedroom or sleeping area of a member of the opposite sex. • Areas off the school site without permission of a member of staff. • All peripheral areas of the site, such as the path and wooded areas to the rear of the DT Centre and Tuckwell and Woodard, the wooded area below the 1st XV pitch, and Cuckoo Corner, unless accompanied by a member of staff. • All school playing fields after dusk. • All laboratories unless accompanied by a member of staff. • Maintenance and building areas - including boiler rooms etc. • School vehicles (including grounds and maintenance equipment etc.) other than school minibuses during organised trips under the supervision of a member of staff. • Other areas of Taunton deemed out of bounds to pupils are published separately in Houses. • The Holway Avenue gate is out of bounds to pedestrians at all times
30 MEDICAL CENTRE • All accidents must be reported promptly to the Medical Centre. • Casualties must, where necessary, be accompanied. • No pupil may have any medicines or drugs without authorisation from the Medical Centre Sister and the knowledge of the House Parent concerned. • Emergencies may be reported to the Medical Centre at any time but non-urgent cases needing treatment should report during normal surgery hours, which are published separately.
