The winter bocce season gets un- derway the week of Jan. 6. Teams of senior players can register to play in either a Tuesday or Thursday after- noon league. Teams with any combi- nation of males and females can register to play in a league on Mon- day, Wednesday or Thursday nights. The regular season lasts eight weeks. After the regular season ends, the first-place finisher in each league plus the four teams that are deter- mined to have the best second place record (based on regular season record and total points scored) will compete in the championship play- offs. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, Mar. 9 at 7 p.m. If you’re interested in registering a team to play in a winter league, here are a few things you need to know. There are two sets of player registration fees. The lower fee is for players who are members of the ICC. That fee is $30 per person per league season. The non-member registration fee is $40 per person per league sea- son. Each team must consist of at least four players, with one player desig- nated as the team captain. Each league is interested in having eight teams. That way every team can compete each week. Team registration forms are avail- able by calling the ICC office at 414- 223-2180 or by picking one up at the ICC. The form can also be emailed to you. Students started here with their Ellis Island experience. Students played the roles of early 1900’s Italian immigrants arriving at Ellis Island after completing the long journey from their homeland. Volunteer Lena Zingale and Culture Committee Chair Gina Jorgensen served as the first set of Ellis Island officials to meet the immigrants. They checked in the immigrants as they entered the im- migration center. Playing the role of Ellis Island nurses, Carol Martinez and Barbara Lupo checked the immigrants for head lice.

All the immigrants needed a doctor’s exam. Volunteers Tony Lupo and Ray Martinez played the roles of doctors.

While Italian language was implemented throughout the Ellis Island experience, at this table students had a chance to learn Italian words through puzzles.

The students were given a multi-media presentation on the immigration expe- Immigrants had to take a loyalty oath. Marie Lieber gave the Ralph Waldo Emerson School fifth graders an overview on the history of the game of bocce, how the game has evolved and how to play. Marie’s husband, Craig, provided his assistance once the students began play- ing.

One thing the students learned immediately is how rapidly the ball rolls on the carpeted bocce courts.

Students learned how to make fresh pasta and roll the dough from Rosalie Fer- rante.

Students received instruction on performing Italian dance, a tarantella, from Susie DeSanctis Christiansen, a longtime member of Tradizione Vivente, the Italian Dance Group of Milwaukee.

After completing the Italian immersion ex- perience program, the students were treated to a and meatballs lunch, prepared and served by the Bartolotta Catering staff.

Students learned how to use a pasta cutting machine from Sophia Michalovitz.

Before the costume judges made their final decisions on prize winners, those decked up paraded around the Festa Ballroom.

PAGE 16 – NOVEMBER 2019 THE ITALIAN TIMES How often have you attended a Hal- loween costume party with live deejay music that was a fun time for the young and old? Well, that happened on the evening of Oct. 19 when the Italian Com- munity Center’s Membership Committee hosted the organization’s first-ever Hal- loween costume dance. Many of those who attended came in costume. Prizes were awarded for these deemed to be the best. The deejays from Alioto Entertainment – Sam and John Alioto – played music that got everyone out on the dance floor. Volunteers oper- ated a food stand where people could buy such treats as an Italian sausage sand- wich, nachos, candy, soft drinks, beer and wine. Immediately when an attendee entered the Festa Ballroom, they knew they were at a Halloween party with the variety of decorations that committee members put up. “While we were hoping for a bigger attendance, it seems that everyone who came had a good, fun time,” said Mary Anne Ceraso-Alioto. The costume winners were: Beau Schur for children’s costume, Alec Ja- cobi for teen costume, Rose Anne Fritchie for adult costume and Claire Hanel and McKenzie Edwards for group costume. A $50 check and a trophy was given to the winners. Pictures of all the winners accompany this article. The costume judges were Tony and Barbara Lupo and Tony and Lena Zin- gale.
