Flooding relief was provided in two stages: 1. Early stage – July-September 2020 - emergency right after the flood – delivery of humanitarian aid, including fresh water, food and essentials 2. Later stage – September 2020-May 2021– restoration and getting ready for winter – providing furniture, renovation supplies, household appliances and helping to restore homesteads All Caritas branches managed to address people’s needs in the early stage. Caritas Kolomyya used funds for later stage by the end of 2020. Caritas Chernivtsi provided bed linen in 2020 and resumed their relief efforts in 2021. Caritas staff used the funds to help rural Carpathian population to survive in winter, mainly by helping with heating, food, home appliances, restoration and insulation. Activities 1. Selection of recipients 2. Delivering aid 3. Spiritual and psychological support Results All Caritases were screening recipients to identify those with real needs. Initial lists of people in need were usually identified by the local social services, parishes, word of mouth, etc. CNEWA obtained names of recipients and proofs of receipt of aid from the local Caritases. 1 Caritas Ivano-Frankivsk distributed food and 89 bedding sets to 89 households in need. Each set consisted of pillows, blankets and bedlinen. Caritas Kolomyya was able to help 42 families from 8 villages most affected by the floods. These were mainly families in difficult life circumstances, people with disabilities, large families, single, elderly people, members of Anti-Terrorist Operation and Joint Forces Operation, as well as those who suffered the most. The assistance was mainly in the form of food and other basics, construction materials, household appliances and furniture. Caritas Chernivtsi delivered 41 bedding sets (blankets, pillows and sheets) to 82 people in need in the Bukovynian villages of Kostychany, Mamalyha, Novoselytsya, Roztoky, Banyliv, Vashkivtsi, Zelenyy Hay and Streletsky Kut in the fall of 2020. Based on their survey conducted in winter 2021, Caritas Chernivtsi selected people who were in greatest need and have not received any flood relief help. Aid delivered in March by the Caritas Chernivtsi volunteers helped people in need to restore their households in Kostychany, Mamalyha, Novoselytsia, Roztoky, Banyliv, Vashkivtsi, Zelenyy Hay, Striletskyi Kut and Revne. However many of the recipients have more needs and could not afford complete restoration of their homes. 154 people benefited directly from the project as well as their family members. Indirect beneficiaries who provided goods and services: 5 Caritas Chernivtsi employees, 7 volunteers, local producers and businesses. See pictures below 1. A mother and her 5 children whose house was flooded in June 2020 are happy to receive a set of new bedding delivered by Caritas Chernivtsi’s volunteer team to their village in the Carpathian Mountains. Photo by: Caritas Chernivtsi 3. This family from the Lanchyn village near Kolomyya in Western Ukraine could not afford to completely restore their house devastated by flooding in June 2020. Both parents lost jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government subsidy was enough to cover only cosmetic repairs. Caritas Kolomyya supplied them with basic necessities and a new kitchen set.
