Prof. Dr Joachim Hornegger

Vice-President for Research at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg

Prof. Dr Joachim Hornegger, born in 1967, studied Computer Science with a Mathematics minor at Friedrich-Alexander- Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. In 1996, he completed his doctoral thesis on statistical learning, recognition and pose estimation of 3D objects.

Prof. Hornegger was a research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T) and the Computer Science Department at Stanford University in 1997 and 1998. After this period abroad, he moved into industry, and worked as a development engineer at Medical Solutions. In 2001, he was promoted to Director of Medical Image Processing in the Angiography and X-ray Systems department. In 2003, he was given overall responsibility for imaging systems. During this time, Prof. Hornegger was still active in academia. He guest lectured at the universities of Erlangen (1998 – 1999), Eichstätt- (2000) and (2000 – 2003). As part of his management training at Siemens, he was also able to obtain a diploma in “Advanced Management” from Duke University to complement his training in computer sciences.

Prof. Hornegger has been Head Professor of the Pattern Recognition department at the FAU’s Technical Faculty since 2005, and, in parallel to this, he is also member of the Medical Faculty. From 2009 to 2011, Prof. Hornegger was Vice-Dean of Computer Sciences. Prof. Hornegger is spokesperson for the Cooperative Management of the Central Institute of Healthcare Engineering (ZiMT) and spokesperson for the Medical Engineering staff-student committee. He initiated the establishment of the Medical Engineering course in 2009. Prof. Hornegger is also member of the Chief Organisation Committee of the Max Planck Research School for Optics and Imaging (IMPRS) and the Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT).

Prof. Hornegger's term as Vice-President will run from 1 October 2011 to 31 March 2016. His remit includes research and fostering aspiring young academics.
