Director’s Notes

This has been an extremely challenging production. There is a tendency to let the set and movement challenges overpower the comedy. While the set is unconventional, the comedy is classic. Relax and enjoy.

The Magic of Theater

In the theater, audiences are asked to imagine that they are somewhere else, in a medieval castle, in a New York apartment, or wherever the play is set. Taking Steps stretches your imagination more than most, asking you to imagine a three story set on one floor, with staircases between them that are almost as improbable as the staircase on the front of this program. Optical illusions are always fun. For example, they don’t look it, but the center circles in the image below are the same size. Hopefully, the second little illusion below will give you a lift. Special thanks to Debbie Feemster, Principal; Jim Studer, Vice Principal; and Keith Roberts, Theater Director, all with Hug High School, for their support of this performance.

Volunteer Power

Reno Little Theater's family of volunteers helps keep the organization running smoothly. They greet you as ushers and box office personnel, mail you news- letters, build the scenery, costumes, and props, and operate the light and sound boards among many other tasks both pleasant and dull. They are singly and taken all in all, pearls beyond price.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY THEATRE Biographies Cast

Julie Douglass (Elizabeth) has played roles running the gamut from Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream to a leper in the TV movie The Fourth Wise Man. Her most recent role was in last season’s Death in England, when she played another English woman (is this the beginning of a trend?). This also happens to be the first play she has done in quite a while in which her husband, Kirk Gardner, does not also appear.

Matthew C. J. McKnight (Mark) is a senior at Hug High School, where he has appeared in many plays, including , California Suite, Rumors, R.U.R., and his favorite, Mary, Mary. He is enjoying playing Mark and is thankful for this opportunity to perform with RLT.

Patrick Crabb (Tristram) played the part of Huck Finn in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in high school. He majored in Theater Arts at the University of Oregon, and attended Western Oregon State College. He played the Prince of Morroco in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, and Mr. Fezzywig in A Christmas Carol. He moved to Reno in 1994. This is his second community theater play, having performed in RLT’s Twelve Angry Men, and he is enjoying the experience immensely.

Patrick Hughes (Roland) was asked to serve as House Manager for an RLT production nine years ago and, since then, has helped in every possible capacity, from cleaning bathrooms to serving as Chairman of the RLT Board of Directors for three years. He directed Good Bye, Charlie and performed in Arsenic and Old Lace, , Greetings, Twelve Angry Men, and many others. His favorite task was as stage crew for Bullshot Crummond, when he had as much fun as the cast. Taking Steps has become another favorite and Pat appreciates having been cast. Some people say, “I got the part”, but Roland says “I got cast.” By day, Pat is employed by Washoe County.

Michael Peters (Leslie) is in his eighth season with RLT, and this is the second time he has trod the boards in full motorcycle regalia. His previous RLT appearances include The Lion in Winter, A Thurber Carnival, Jake’s Women, and as the blanket- toting Linus in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Last season he made his directorial debut with The Importance of Being Earnest. He is delighted by this opportunity to participate in RLT’s outstanding collaboration with Hug High School’s theater department. By day, James, Sean, and Katie’s Dad is an administrator in the Graduate School at UNR. Bergen Kanoff (Kitty) made her RLT debut last season in The Importance of Being Earnest, but she was a veteran performer at Hug High School, having appeared in Rumors, California Suite, Mary, Mary, and others. She is now studying theater at UNR, but returned to Hug High this season as Assistant Director for Noises Off. Director

David Zybert has been a Reno resident since the big snow of 1990. He moved here from Thousand Oaks, California and was immediately cast in RLT's production of Harvey. Since then, he has directed for RLT several times, most notably Dracula, You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown and, earlier this season, Twelve Angry Men. He has also performed in several RLT productions, including Tribute, The Mousetrap and last season's The Importance of Being Earnest. David is the manager of web design for Great Basin Internet Services and, in his spare time, volunteers for Nevada's Junior Miss Scholarship Program.

Reno Little Theater recommends that you see Getting Away With Murder by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth presented by Hug High School directed by Keith Roberts The Seven Deadly Sins are personified in this comedy thriller. One by one, the suspects are killed, leaving the audience to wonder if the real murderer will get away with it.

RLT is proud to present the premiere community-theater production of Proof. When Proof ran longer than expected on Broadway this season, we thought that we would have to substitute another play. However, we recently obtained permission to do an amateur production, so we are back to our original schedule. Proof will open May 9 at Hug High School. Proof distinguished itself by winning, in addition to the Pulitzer, numerous prestigious awards in 2001, including the Tony Award for Best Play, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, Award for Best Play, Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play, New York Drama Critics Best American Play, and Drama League Award for Best Play. About Reno Little Theater

Reno Little Theater is currently in its 68th consecutive season of performing shows in Reno and we thought you might enjoy some RLT trivia. During our 68 years, RLT has staged over 2400 performances of more than 400 shows. We have performed throughout the state of Nevada, going as far south as Tonopah and as far east as Elko. Those shows could not have been done without our many volunteers, who have done everything from acting and directing to sewing and cleaning. We estimate that more than 6000 different people have helped at RLT, averaging 90 hours per show per volunteer (that’s over 540,000 hours!). As we approach our 69th year, we will continue to perform shows that our audiences enjoy. We also hope our volunteers enjoy the time they spend assisting us and will continue to spend their quality time with us!
