Everyone enjoys a good comedy so I was thrilled when I discovered Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike during its recent run at The Old Globe. It is a smart and hilariously written comedy that made me think and laugh out loud. I thought it would be a perfect fit for Coronado Playhouse. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike premiered at McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey in 2012, followed by an Off- Broadway production later the same year. It transferred to Broadway in 2013 and was awarded the TONY Award for Best Play and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, among other awards. As the title suggests, the play was inspired by Durang’s love of Anton Chekhov. Durang is a writer who uses intellectual wit and routinely Thomas Fitzpatrick, Director challenges theatrical conventions, as did Chekhov. Although the characters in the play share names with Chekhov characters, they are not the same characters. They share some elements but are fully imagined. According to Durang, the contemporary comedy “is not a Chekhov parody,” it was designed to “jump off Chekhovian themes” without borrowing any of the actual plots. Is it important to be familiar with Chekhov? No. Though having some knowledge of Chekhov may increase the enjoyment of the in-jokes, you don’t need to have familiarity of Chekhov to find to make you laugh. It has been such a pleasure having the opportunity to work with some of our community’s best comedic actors and talented newcomers. As well, our production’s creative team, designers, and crew are outstanding and they all need to be recognized. I truly thank all of them for their talent, professionalism, expertise and hard work. So whether you are familiar with Durang and/ or Chechov or not, please sit back, relax, laugh and enjoy.
