A LOOK AT SEASON SIXTY-SEVEN Colonial Players’ 2015-16 season will take our patrons on a journey from England to New York to Boston and from the late Victorian era to 21st-century America, using comedy, drama, and THE music to relate spellbinding tales of love, laughter, and, yes, even murder. Subscriptions for either five or seven shows will be on sale soon. We hope you will join us on our journey. ★ SEPTEMBER 4-26 The season opens with Sherlock’s Last Case, a ruefully comic send-up of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories about his famed English detective. This modern version is unlike anything you’ve seen about Holmes, with a jaw-dropping twist so unexpected we will ask our patrons not to reveal the secret to those who have yet to see the play. ★ OCTOBER 16-31 Side Man is a memory play told by a narrator who relates the story of his parents' relationship over four decades from the 1950s to the 1980s. It focuses on the lives of side men - musicians who made their living playing gigs with headliners on tours and in recording sessions - at a time when rock and roll was edging out jazz and big band music. Side Man won a Tony Award and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize. Side Man contains strong language and mature themes. ★ NOVEMBER 20-DECEMBER 13 Morning's at Seven is a charming comedy set in the early 20th century and is the second in our series of classic American plays. Originally produced in 1938, it is a story of family relationships among four sisters, three husbands, and one son and his fiancée of 12 years.

A^ü. i REPRESENTATIVE DIRECTORS, BLACK THEATRE PRODUCTIONS, AND PRACTICES AT HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES 1968-1978 Alex C. Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY March 1980 Approved by Doctoral Committee: Graduate College„Representative il ABSTRACT This investigation described the status of Black Theatre productions and practices at four year historically Black Colleges and Universities with degree programs in Speech and Drama, Speech and Theatre, or Communi cations. The objectives of this study were: (1) to profile the directors and their production philosophies and practices; (2) to chronicle and categorize Black plays produced during 1968-1978; (3) to characterize the practices in theatre management and (4) to describe trends, and chart some implications from the data collected. Primary data for this study was obtained from mailed questionnaires and thirty-two audio recorded interviews with theatre practitioners at the 43rd National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts (NADSA) Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on April 4-7, 1979. Thirty-six questionnaires were mailed and thirty (83%) were returned; twenty-four (66%) were usable for this investigation. Results of the study revealed that the directors were academically trained, experienced, of varying ages, Black, male dominated, and dedicated The absence of women as theatre directors suggested areas for study to clarify the reasons for this situation. Respondents believed that productions should be primarily enter taining which suggested their having traditional responses to the function of art that has been assailed by the proponents of the Black Arts Movement who call for art as a political influence.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Modern Sentimentalism: Feeling, Femininity, and Female Authorship in Interwar America A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in English by Lisa Anne Mendelman 2015 © Copyright by Lisa Anne Mendelman 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Modern Sentimentalism: Feeling, Femininity, and Female Authorship in Interwar America by Lisa Anne Mendelman Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Michael A. North, Chair “Modern Sentimentalism” chronicles the myriad ways in which sentimentalism evolves as modernism emerges. I demonstrate that sentimental aesthetics are more complex than we have thought and that these aesthetics participate in modern literary innovation. I likewise demonstrate that modernity, and the American interwar period in particular, enjoys a more complex relation to the sentimental than we have understood, and that twentieth-century constructs of gender and emotion equally revise and restyle sentimental precedent. Finally, I demonstrate that, when it comes to analyzing historical cultures of feeling, contemporary theories of affect have much to gain from archival methods. Synthesizing these claims, I identify a new form of feeling in modern aesthetic experience. Neither an idealized lapse into the past nor a naïve vision of the future, what I call “modern sentimentalism” most often registers the ironic consciousness of an enduring sentimental impulse. ii “Modern Sentimentalism” thus overturns
