Born in New York in 1927, Simon began writing comic i material as a 15-year-old high school student in collaboration with Notes his older brother, Danny. After a stint in the military at the end of World War II, he and his brother landed jobs as writers for the fledgling radio company Columbia Broadcasting System for some of the most famous comedians of the day. After a number of years of working together, Danny followed the trend and headed for California to write for television, while Neil stayed in New York working for Sid Caesar. In 1960 Neil took one assignment in Los Angeles writing sketches for Jerry Lewis, but finished the five- week job in one week. With the four remaining weeks he wrote his first stage play, . It opened in New York in February 1961 to rave reviews and started a string of hit plays that turned Broadway into a continuing Neil Simon festival. At least one Neil Simon play was selling out in a for the next 14 years. Usually there were two, often three. Once, for several months in 1967, four Neil Simon hits could be seen in Al Franklin New York! Executive Director In March 1983, , the first of a trilogy of plays based on his own life, opened to rave reviews in New York. Simon was recognized by the New York Drama Critics

Twenty-two * years of writing hit plays and musicals, and Simon had finally received his first Tony Award for his writing. The following year Simon completed the trilogy with the hit, , for which its two stars won for their performances. Simon went on to win the as well as another Tony Award for Best Play with his brilliant in 1991 and has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from both the New Dramatists and Kennedy Center. Neil Simon, the most produced, most prolific and among the best regarded American playwrights ever, has written his final play, . His last play in a rewarding 38-year career recently closed in New York after a string of poor to mediocre reviews. Though he says he'll continue to write for television and film, the process of getting a play to Broadway, even for Neil Simon, is too arduous and lengthy for this 71-year-old theatrical genius. Simon leaves us with 32 plays, and has written, to date, 19 films and numerous television scripts.

12 Our production of BILOXI BLUES is the story of young Eugene M. Jerome. If s 1943 and he's been shipped to Biloxi, Mississippi, for basic training in the army. Eugene has never been away from home before and is determined to accomplish three goals while in Mississippi: to become a writer, to not get killed and to lose his virginity. Over a period of ten weeks in boot camp with five army buddies, his tough training instructor and the women he meets in Biloxi, Jerome discovers things about himself, about the bigotry of the world, about human nature and about the essence of love. I thank you for joining us today and for being a part of the journey we'll all take with Eugene.
