THIRTY-THIRD IN ORDINARY TIME MASSES FOR THE WEEK REFLECTIONS Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A ON TODAY’S November 16, 2014 Worship: 1205

SATURDAY, November 15, 2014 The Lord entrusts the subjects of his kingdom with gifts 5:00PM and graces and he gives his subjects the freedom to use Gene Del Mauro ~ Nieces & Nephews them as they think best. With each gift and talent, SUNDAY, November 16, 2014 gives sufficient means (grace and wisdom) for using them in a fitting way. As the parable of the talents 7:30AM shows, God abhors indifference and an attitude that says Joyce Commens ~ Family it's not worth trying. God honors those who use their 9:00AM talents and gifts for doing good. Those who are faithful Frank De Martino ~ Mirella & Family with even a little are entrusted with more! But those who 10:30AM neglect or squander what God has entrusted to them will Leo and John Fadden ~ Anna Marie Quagliato lose what they have. 12:00PM There is an important lesson here for us. No one can Elyse Di Girolamo ~ Dee & Joe Nahirny stand still for long in the Christian life. We either get 7:00PM more or we lose what we have. We either advance For the People of Saint James towards God or we slip back. Do you seek to serve God MONDAY, November 17, 2014 with the gifts, talents, and graces he has given to you? 7:30AM

THE PASTOR’S LETTER Father John Gabriel

Dear Parish Family,

Over the past few months, the issue of doctor-assisted suicide has come once again into the news because of the case of Brittany Maynard, a young married woman who chose to take her own life rather than die from terminal brain cancer. In fact, on November 1st, the Feast of All , she did take her life. Most of us cannot imagine the overwhelming feelings that come to a person in Brittany’s shoes, or others like her who face suffering. Even St. Therese of the Child Jesus (the Little Flower) had thoughts of suicide during her final illness. She was suffering greatly from tuberculosis, and the Sister who was helping her in the infirmary left a glass of poison, a solution for disinfecting the room, near her bed within her reach. St. Therese cautioned this to be careful leaving such things within the reach of the sick since “it takes only a moment when one is suffering so much to lose one’s reason.” We as Catholics can certainly empathize with a terminally ill person facing a tremendous suffering. But we can never embrace any type of suicide as a solution to suffering because suffering needs no ‘solution’ other than Himself. The culture today, a culture rooted in the pursuit of pleasure without consequence, sees suffering as a great evil to be avoided at all costs. In the Christian economy, suffering is seen as a participation in the redemptive act of Christ who Himself suffered willingly for our sakes. Philip Johnson, a seminarian of the Diocese of Raleigh, is also suffering from the same type of brain cancer as Brittany Maynard. He wrote the following in his Diocesan newspaper: “Suffering is not worthless, and our lives are not our own to take. As humans we are relational – we relate to one another and the actions of one person affects others. Sadly, the concept of “redemptive suffering” – that human suffering united to the suffering of Jesus on the Cross for our salvation can benefit others – has often been ignored or lost in modern times. It is perfectly understandable that medication should be made available to give comfort and limit suffering as much as possible during the dying process, especially during a terminal illness, but it is impossible to avoid suffering altogether. We do not seek pain for its own sake, but our suffering can have great meaning if we try to join it to the Passion of Christ and offer it for the conversion or intentions of others. While often terrifying, the suffering and pain that we will all experience in our lives can be turned into something positive. This has been a very difficult task for me, but it is possible to achieve.” It seems, as our culture of becomes increasingly convinced that death is a solution for some of our problems that the will once again have to champion the cause of human life from conception to natural death. We do so without quali- fication, hesitation, limitations or fear. We do so convinced in the value of human life at all stages. The process of dying is a process of being born again into a new life. Birth always comes with pain. Were we to take a child from the womb before enough development occurred that child would not survive. The premise is the same here: should someone cut short the dying process ‘by their own choice’ perhaps they are short-circuiting the very process that would help them by God’s grace and the virtue of patient suffering to achieve the degree of holiness that God intends for that person. This is to say nothing of the graces others receive by ministering to a dying patient. Even the dying have something to teach us. Even the dying have something still to learn. All of this is not to judge Brittany Maynard as a person, but only to say that we cannot support her decision to end her life ‘on her own terms.’ reminded of an incident in the life of St. John Vianney, parish of Ars, France. A woman whose son committed suicide by jumping off a bridge came to the Saint concerned for his salvation. Father Vianney, with his usual pastoral sensitivity, told the woman to trust in God and know that “between the bridge and the river, your son sought and found God’s forgiveness.” I have asked Fr. Silvano to work with Pat Sullivan (the head of our Respect Life Committee and currently its only member) to increase this committee’s activities. Please see either of them if you are interested. May we continue to work together to build a culture of life here in our nation, a culture that leaves to God what is rightfully His, the gift of life now and into eternity.

In His ,

~ Fr. John

A TIME TO REMEMBER

Dear Saint James Parish Families, As we approach the first anniversary of Monsignor William Hatcher’s passing, I have a dream and plan of dedicating and renaming the Upper Auditorium to Monsignor William Hatcher Hall. Many memories were created by Monsignor Bill as he attended all of the school and parish functions held in the auditorium. His laughter resonates in many of us today. Our goal is to raise money to obtain a plaque to recognize the dedication of the Hall. In time, as money is donated, I am looking to paint, install new flooring and update the facilities in the front of the auditorium. A memorial board with the donor’s name will also be placed in the auditorium. Please send donations to the parish or school office marked “Monsignor Hatcher Hall”.

Check should be made payable to “Saint James” and mark the memo: Hatcher Hall. Tax receipts will be provided upon request.

Thank you for your thoughtful generosity, Father John Gabriel & Parish Staff
