Daniel 10 Angelic Visions Daniel 9 2 1 DANIEL 10 ANGELIC VISIONS DANIEL 9 2 • In the, first year of Darius, Daniel prays to God after confessing, fasting and donning sackcloth and ashes. He confessed the sins of Israel. • He asked that God might “shine” on the Temple and the city of Jerusalem. He was praying for mercy for Israel. 3 AN ANGEL ANSWERS DANIEL’S PRAYER WITH PROPHECY • But it is not the answer Daniel had hoped for. • Gabriel explained it would not be 70 years but 490 years (7 X 70) until the desolation in Jerusalem would come to an end. • Another 49 years would pass until there was an anointed leader. • 434 years until another anointed one is cut down. • Another 7 years and sacrifice in the Temple would be abolished. 4 LOOKING AHEAD • Chapter 10 is an introduction to the next apocalyptic vision. Chapters 11 and 12 are actually one long prophecy of the end times. These three chapters should be read together for the best understanding. 5 DANIEL 10 • This vision begins in the third year of Cyrus, or three years later. • Daniel begins a three week fast in preparation for another vision or for “mystical knowledge.” • “The revelation was certain: a great war; he understood this from the vision. 2 In those days, I, Daniel, mourned three full weeks. 3 I ate no savory food, took no meat or wine, and did not anoint myself at all until the end of the three weeks.” (Dan 10:1-3.) 6 DANIEL PREPARES FOR YET ANOTHER VISION • Daniel’s preparations and fasting, are similar to those one would make before the Day of Atonement. • He fasts, he avoids rich foods of any kind, and he drinks no wine, and he uses no lotions or oils on his body. • He goes to the river with companions, yet when his vision arrives his friends run and hide. Daniel finds himself alone with his angel messenger. 7 DANIEL 10:1-3 • The third year of King Cyrus, the Great of Persia, sets the date at around 536 BC. The time of the restoration of the Temple in Jerusalem is eagerly expected and does begin that year with exiles beginning to return to Jerusalem. • Daniel is on the banks of the Tigris River. • He has a vision of a divine “man”. His companions cannot see or hear it, yet they sense that there is something frightening present. They flee in terror, leaving Daniel alone with this vision of Gabriel. ANGELIC VISION FOR DANIEL ALONE 8 • “I saw a man dressed in linen with a belt of fine gold around his waist. 6 His body was like chrysolite, his face shone like lightning, his eyes were like fiery torches, his arms and feet looked like burnished bronze, and the sound of his voice was like the roar of a multitude. ” • Frightened, Daniel becomes pale, powerless and faints. • The angel’s touch revives him. WHAT DOES THE ANGEL TELL US ABOUT HIMSELF? 9 • Vs. 11 “I have now been sent to you.” (He was sent by God.) • Vs 12 “from the first day you made up your mind to acquire understanding and humble yourself before God, your prayer was heard. Because of it I started out..” (Daniels prayers are being answered.) • Vs 13 – The prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me 21 days. • (Angels can only be in one place at a time. Another angel delayed him) • Vs 13 Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me… 10 MORE ABOUT THE ANGEL Vs 14 -“I have come to help you understand what is to happen to your people at the end of days.” (Understanding is a gift of the HS) Vs 9 – I (fell into a trance, fainted or lost consciousness) and he raised me to my hands and knees. (The touch of an angel can heal.) Vs 16 - I was unable to talk; he touched my lips and I opened my mouth to speak. (paraphrased) Vs 18 [He] touched me and strengthened me” 11 STILL MORE INFO ON THIS ANGEL- • Vs 19 -When he spoke to me, I was strengthened. (just a word!) • Vs 20 “Do you know,” he asked, “why I have come to you? Soon I must fight the prince of Persia again. • Vs 20 -21 When I leave, the prince of Greece will come; 21 but I shall tell you what is written in the book of truth. No one supports me against these except Michael, your prince, HE DID NOT GIVE US HIS NAME, ONLY CLUES 12 • 11:1 and in the first year of Darius the Mede I stood to strengthen him and be his refuge. This would have been in 539 BC – three years before this vision began. It is assumed that this is Gabriel because he had appeared to Daniel in chapters 8 and 9, both of which included visions of the end of time and the fall of empires. Darius was king in Daniel 6- The Lion’s Den. 500 YEARS LATER 13 • Gabriel brings good news to Zechariah that he and Elizabeth are to become parents to John. (Luke 1:13). • “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of [the] Lord. ” “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings” (Luke 1:19). GABRIEL BRINGS GOOD NEWS TO MARY 14 • Gabriel told Mary that she, too, would miraculously conceive and that she would give birth. • “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:30-33 PRINCE OF PERSIA, PRINCE OF GREECE AND YOUR 15 PRINCE MICHAEL? “Princes” in this text are angels of God. It was long believed that each nation was appointed an angel. Deuteronomy 32:8 : When the Most High allotted each nation its heritage, when he separated out human beings, He set up the boundaries of the peoples after the number of the divine beings… Michael is still considered the patron angel of Israel. 16 DANIEL 10:20- 11:1 • 20 “Do you know,” he asked, “why I have come to you? Soon I must fight the prince of Persia again. When I leave, the prince of Greece will come; 21 but I shall tell you what is written in the book of truth. No one supports me against these except Michael, your prince, 1 and in the first year of Darius the Mede I stood to strengthen him and be his refuge. 17 BATTLE OF PRINCES/ ANGELS • There seems to be an on-going battle between spiritual creatures here. • Adversarial princes or “angels’ are attempting to interfere with God’s divine plan for humanity. God uses his angels to intervene in human events. The ultimate goal is to redeem humanity. • Gabriel is a messenger of God. Michael is associated with judgment and leads God’s army. 18 WHAT IS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF TRUTH? • Find out in Chapter 11! • The Book contains divine decrees for the future. • Psalm 139:16 • Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 19 THE BOOK OF TRUTH? • Ezekiel 5:1-4 1 Then I raised my eyes again and saw a flying scroll. 2 He asked me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a flying scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.” 3 Then he said to me: “This is the curse which is to go forth over the whole land. According to it, every thief and every perjurer will be expelled. 4 I will send it forth—oracle of the LORD of hosts—so that it will come to the house of the thief, and into the house of the one who swears falsely by my name. It shall lodge within each house, consuming it, timber and stones.” WHAT DO WE REALLY KNOW ABOUT 20 ANGELS? • They are created. • Genesis 2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. 2 And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested • Nehemiah 9:6 6 You alone are the LORD.You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you. • Paul tells us in Colossians 1:16 that God created all things; “visible and invisible” . 21 DIFFERENT KINDS OF ANGELS Cherubim – Genesis 3:24 He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a sword flaming and turning to guard the way to the tree of life. Exodus 25:22 There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the covenant, I will deliver to you all my commands for the Israelites.

  • The Truth About Angels
PROJECT CONNECT PROJECT CONNECT PROJECT CONNECT The Truth About Angels by Donald L. Deffner I grew up during the Great Depression in the early 1930s. My father was a minister. Behind our small home was a dirt alley which led nine blocks to downtown Wichita, Kansas. I can remember when I was a boy the hungry, destitute men who came to the back door begging for food. My mother never turned them down. She shared what little we had, even if only a couple of pieces of bread and a glass of milk. My mother didn’t just say, “Depart in peace! I’ll pray for you! Keep warm and well fed!” (See James 2:16.) No. She acted. She gave. Often I was curious about these mysterious and somewhat scary men. I had a sense that they were “different” than I was, not worse, not better, just different. I always watched these strangers heading back up the alley toward downtown, and sometimes, in a cops-and-robbers fashion, I secretly followed them, jumping behind bushes so I wouldn’t be seen. I think I half expected them to suddenly disappear. After all, my Sunday school teacher, encouraging us to be kind and care for strangers, told us the Bible says that, by doing so, many people have entertained angels without knowing it (see Hebrews 13:2). I never saw any of the men disappear. They were ordinary, hungry human beings. But my Sunday school teacher was right. God does send His angels to us, and they do interact with us—not just to test us and see if we are kind, but to protect us and guide us.

  • The Doctrine of Angels Part
1 TTHE DDOCTRINE OF AANGELS PPART 22 HOW ARE ANGELS ORGANIZED? Although the Bible doesn’t describe in detail the hierarchy within the angelic realm, enough evidence exists to show that some organization exists Classification 1. Archangel – the highest ranking angel Michael is the only angel designated archangel and may possibly be the only one of this rank His name means “who is like God?” Apparently, Michael is one of the chief princes (see #2 below) As the chief angel of God, he especially watches over Israel (Daniel 10:13, 21; 12:1) and leads the holy angels (Revelation 12:7) Jude 9~ But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil 1 Thessalonians 4:16 ~ For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 2. Chief Princes Daniel 10:13 ~ But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. 3. Rulers, Authorities, Thrones, Dominions, Powers Colossians 1:16 ~ whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things have been created by Him 4. Cherubim Cherubim are the highest group/order of angels, created with great powers and beauty Their main purpose is to proclaim and protect God’s glorious presence and sovereignty Genesis 3:24 ~ east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim Exodus 25:22 ~ There I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, I will speak to you about all that I will give you in commandment for the sons of Israel.

  • Most Common Jewish First Names in Israel Edwin D
Names 39.2 (June 1991) Most Common Jewish First Names in Israel Edwin D. Lawson1 Abstract Samples of men's and women's names drawn from English language editions of Israeli telephone directories identify the most common names in current usage. These names, categorized into Biblical, Traditional, Modern Hebrew, and Non-Hebrew groups, indicate that for both men and women over 90 percent come from Hebrew, with the Bible accounting for over 70 percent of the male names and about 40 percent of the female. Pronunciation, meaning, and Bible citation (where appropriate) are given for each name. ***** The State of Israel represents a tremendous opportunity for names research. Immigrants from traditions and cultures as diverse as those of Yemen, India, Russia, and the United States have added their onomastic contributions to the already existing Jewish culture. The observer accustomed to familiar first names of American Jews is initially puzzled by the first names of Israelis. Some of them appear to be biblical, albeit strangely spelled; others appear very different. What are these names and what are their origins? Benzion Kaganoffhas given part of the answer (1-85). He describes the evolution of modern Jewish naming practices and has dealt specifi- cally with the change of names of Israeli immigrants. Many, perhaps most, of the Jews who went to Israel changed or modified either personal or family name or both as part of the formation of a new identity. However, not all immigrants changed their names. Names such as David, Michael, or Jacob required no change since they were already Hebrew names.

  • THE NATURE and POWER of SATAN Theorizing About the Nature
CHAPTER THREE THE NATURE AND POWER OF SATAN Theorizing about the nature, origin, and cosmological status of Satan occurs among the selected writings, especially among the later ones. However, there is an obvious lack of "speculative" interest in the sense of seeking to work out a complete cosmology of evil. Concepts as to the origin, abode, and ultimate future of Satan are often very diverse, and there are only a small number of referen ces. An analysis and interpretation of the nature of Satan as conceiv ed by the early Christian tradition will be therefore necessarily less comprehensive than a discussion of his activities. There are some basic understandings as to the nature and power of Satan common to most of the selected writers, however, and they are best summarized by the New Testament phrases: Satan, the "prince of the power of the air," "ruler of demons," "ruler of the world," and "god of this age." A. SATAN: PRINCE OF THE POWER OF THE AIR 1. Origin of Satan For the most part, the New Testament writers make no theoreti cal assertions as to the origin of Satan. However, a number of passages by choice of words and phraseology seem to reflect the idea of Satan as a fallen angel who is chief among a class of fallen angels, an idea which appears frequently in apocalyptic literature.1 II Peter 2 :4, for example, refers to the angels that sinned and were cast into hell. Jude 6 mentions "the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling ..

  • Angelology Angelology
Christian Angelology Angelology Introduction Why study Angels? They teach us about God As part of God’s creation, to study them is to study why God created the way he did. In looking at angels we can see God’s designs for his creation, which tells us something about God himself. They teach us about ourselves We share many similar qualities to the angels. We also have several differences due to them being spiritual beings. In looking at these similarities and differences we can learn more about the ways God created humanity. In looking at angels we can avoid “angelic fallacies” which attempt to turn men into angels. They are fascinating! Humans tend to be drawn to the supernatural. Spiritual beings such as angels hit something inside of us that desires to “return to Eden” in the sense of wanting to reconnect ourselves to the spiritual world. They are different, and different is interesting to us. Fr. J. • President's Monthly Letter Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels September 2020 Dear Guardian Families
President’s Monthly Letter Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels September 2020 Dear Guardian Families, Happy Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels! Yesterday we celebrated our patronal feast and the 3rd anniversary of the dedication of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel. As our fourth year is now underway, we can look back and celebrate the many accomplishments of SMA in the past and look forward to our exciting future together, confident that our patron, St. Michael, will defend us in the battle. Whenever I visit the doctor, there are four words I never like to hear: “Now this may hurt.” That message brings about two responses in me, the first is one of dread… it means I’m going to be experiencing something I really don’t want! Secondly, I brace in anticipation of what is about to happen; I’m able to make myself ready for the event. September is the month of Our Lady of Sorrows (in Latin, the seven “dolors”). When Mary encountered Simeon in the temple, she heard the same message in a more intense form, “this is going to hurt.” The prophet told her, A sword will pierce through your own soul. Mary, a new mother still in wonder at the miraculous birth of her child, now hears that her life is going to be integrally tied to his sufferings. So September is always a month linked to compassion; the compassion Mary had for her son and has for us. It is also a reminder of the compassion we can have for each other.
