09-29 Archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael September 29th is the Memorial of the Archangels. Michael is the patron of security forces and of the sick; Gabriel is the patron of telecommunications and the Postal Service; Raphael is the patron of travelers and the blind. Saint Gregory tells us that “the word “angel” denotes a function … they can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover … those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels.”i Michael’s name means “Who is like God?” Michael is sent when wondrous power is required “so that his action and his name may make it clear that no one can do what God does by his superior power.”ii • In the Book of Daniel, the Archangel Michael protects Israel. “The prince of the kingdom of Persia stood in my way for twenty-one days, until finally Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me” (10:13). • So to, in the book of Revelation. When Satan opposes God and his people, “then Michael and his angels cast the dragon and his angels out of heaven” (Rev 12:7–9). • As patron of the sick, he appeared in Rome in the 2nd century and stopped a plague. • He came to the aid of Joan of Arc as she fought to save France from England during the Hundred Years War.iii Gabriel whose name means “God’s Strength” or “God is my Warrior.” Gabriel announces the greatest message of all. God will be with us. Jesus, the Son of God, will also be the Son of Mary. He comes to Zechariah and announces the birth of John the Baptist. And in the Book of Daniel, he helps Daniel to interpret a vision about the end of time when God will sit in judgment of the wicked (8:16). Raphael means God’s remedy. He is a matchmaker helping to arrange the marriage of Sarah and Tobias. He is a protector who advises about the use of the fish liver and heart to make the demon flee. He also offers advice for the honeymoon so that bride and groom will pray for mercy and protection.iv He is a healer. “When he touched Tobit’s eyes in order to cure him, he banished the darkness of his blindness.”v As messengers of God, we can take comfort that God protects us. Through the Archangel Michael he reassures us that God is most powerful and that all of the evil we see in this world will be vanquished. Through the Archangel Gabriel, God reassures us that he is with us to the end of time. Through the Archangel Raphael, God reassures us of the holiness of marriage, of the efficacy of prayer, and that with God’s help, any spiritual blindness that we have may one day give way to the Eternal Light. God’s messengers of love, They come from realms of peace above, From homes of never-fading light, From blissful mansions ever bright. They come to watch around us here To soothe our sorrow, calm our fear:vi i Office of Readings from St Gregory ii Ibid, Gregory. iii Hahn, Scott. Catholic Bible Dictionary: Michael. iv Hahn, Scott. • Archangels Michael and Zadkiel
Archangels Michael and Zadkiel Michael is the great Archangel of God who has committed himself to the protection of the Son's (and daughters) of God. He carries a sword of Light to cut humanity free of the burdens of darkness that it sometimes carries. He is the Prince of Archangels and defeated Satan, who chose to turn from God and oppress mankind. He is the crusader of the Christ who will protect the soul of man and bring the presence of peace to those who choose to ask his help. He champions the Will of God and not the lower will of humanity. Yet with Love He will help humanity find the Divine path and protect the souls of those that chose it. Zadkiel is the Archangel of the violet flame. Zadkiel is the angel of the flame of forgiveness and of spiritual freedom. Love is the essence of all angels and Zadkiel, in love, will help mankind free themselves from the bonds of pain and karma they have created. The violet flame cleanses humanity of the accumulated debris of hatred and helps re-establish freedom, by transmuting mankind's mis-creations into the pure essence of Light that flows from God. We can choose to understand and feel the spiritual qualities of these two of God's messengers. We will ask for God's blessing through these angels and search for understanding of our role in God's creation. Archangel Gabriel I want to share some experiences I had with Archangel Gabriel. I had received wonderful upliftment and I believe we can all receive that.

  • The Truth About Angels
PROJECT CONNECT PROJECT CONNECT PROJECT CONNECT The Truth About Angels by Donald L. Deffner I grew up during the Great Depression in the early 1930s. My father was a minister. Behind our small home was a dirt alley which led nine blocks to downtown Wichita, Kansas. I can remember when I was a boy the hungry, destitute men who came to the back door begging for food. My mother never turned them down. She shared what little we had, even if only a couple of pieces of bread and a glass of milk. My mother didn’t just say, “Depart in peace! I’ll pray for you! Keep warm and well fed!” (See James 2:16.) No. She acted. She gave. Often I was curious about these mysterious and somewhat scary men. I had a sense that they were “different” than I was, not worse, not better, just different. I always watched these strangers heading back up the alley toward downtown, and sometimes, in a cops-and-robbers fashion, I secretly followed them, jumping behind bushes so I wouldn’t be seen. I think I half expected them to suddenly disappear. After all, my Sunday school teacher, encouraging us to be kind and care for strangers, told us the Bible says that, by doing so, many people have entertained angels without knowing it (see Hebrews 13:2). I never saw any of the men disappear. They were ordinary, hungry human beings. But my Sunday school teacher was right. God does send His angels to us, and they do interact with us—not just to test us and see if we are kind, but to protect us and guide us.

  • Jacob's Journey to Heaven
Piecemakers Country Store 1720 Adams Avenue Costa Mesa, CA 92626 (714) 641-3112 [email protected] Jacob’s Journey to Heaven We have in the Old Testament a most interesting So Jacob began to have an encounter with God in story of a man’s journey from a conniving supplanter to his wilderness journey. Jesus said, “Leave your father a prince of God. A man who started his walk at the and mother and old relationships and follow me.” direction of his mother and ended with a personal Although John the Baptist had followers he never said, relationship with God. His name is Jacob. While yet in “Follow me.” We, living in the year 2003 have only seen his mother’s womb, the Lord called him and gave a Baptist ministry that began in the sixties and has now instructions to Rebekah, his mother saying, “The elder become old and worn out. The pastors and teachers and shall serve the younger.” This was unheard of in Jewish prophets could not say”follow me” because they never times so when it looked as if God was not moving in went anywhere. They built a kingdom in the world and Rebekah’s timing she took it upon herself to help him settled down to their own demise for “He that seeks to out a bit almost to the death of her darling son. God save his life will lose it.”You will notice in the scriptures makes allowances for our ignorance. Unless, of course, both Jesus and John the Baptist traveled the same dusty we continue to be stubborn and not learn.

  • If Angels Do Not Have a Gender Then How Come They Have Boys Names?
If angels do not have a gender then how come they have boys names? It is true that we believe that angels do not have gender. Angels unlike human beings are pure spirit. This is why when people say that a human being has become an angel in heaven that is incorrect. Any human being in heaven is a saint. It is true that human beings until the resurrection of the dead while in heaven only contain their spiritual nature. But when Christ comes again, and the resurrection of the dead occurs at that moment human beings will become complete joining the physical and spiritual together in heaven. Hence, angels and human beings are not simply a different species they are different order of creation. As such angels can never become human and humans can never become angels. But when angels have been revealed to human beings, they taken on the appearance of somewhat human form. They did this in order for human beings to be able to comprehend the message that is being given to them from God. The word angel means messenger. And each angel has a specific function to perform based on their rank. There are nine ranks of angels: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels and Angels. Seraphim are caretakers to the throne of God and lead the worship of God in heaven. Cherubim guard the tree of life and the throne of God. Thrones are living symbols of God’s justice and authority and listening to the will of God present the prayers of human beings to Him.

  • Angelology Angelology
Christian Angelology Angelology Introduction Why study Angels? They teach us about God As part of God’s creation, to study them is to study why God created the way he did. In looking at angels we can see God’s designs for his creation, which tells us something about God himself. They teach us about ourselves We share many similar qualities to the angels. We also have several differences due to them being spiritual beings. In looking at these similarities and differences we can learn more about the ways God created humanity. In looking at angels we can avoid “angelic fallacies” which attempt to turn men into angels. They are fascinating! Humans tend to be drawn to the supernatural. Spiritual beings such as angels hit something inside of us that desires to “return to Eden” in the sense of wanting to reconnect ourselves to the spiritual world. They are different, and different is interesting to us. Fr. J. • John the Baptist According to Flavius Josephus, and His Incorporation in the Christian Tradition
JOHN THE BAPTIST ACCORDING TO FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS, AND HIS INCORPORATION IN THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION Johannes Tromp In Jewish Antiquities 18.116-119, Flavius Josephus includes a section on John the Baptist. His reason for including it was that it contained a widely circulating explanation for the victory of the Nabatean king Aretas over the tetrarch Herod Antipas. 1 In my translation, it reads as follows: 116. Some Jews believed that the army of Herod was destroyed by God, who quite rightly avenged the fate of John, surnamed the Baptist. 117. For Herod had John killed, although he had been a good man. He had asked the Jews to lead a virtuous life and to come together for baptism,2 while practising righteousness towards each other, and piety towards God. In this way, it seemed to him, was baptism acceptable: they should not use it to obtain forgiveness for the sins they had committed, but as a purification of the body, inasmuch as their soul had already been cleansed beforehand by righteousness. 118. When others joined them-for they became highly agitated by his preaching-Herod feared his influence on people to be so great that it might lead to some uprising; for they seemed to be doing everything according to his advice. Therefore Herod decided that it would be much better to take the initiative to have him killed before he was able to cause some revolution, than to get involved in matters once the revolt had begun, and then be sorry. 119. Because of Herod's apprehension,John was sent in chains to the aforementioned fortress of Machaerus and killed there.

  • John the Baptist: Jesus Freak
John the Baptist: Jesus Freak Matthew 3:1-2,4: In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 4 John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. Luke 3:7-8,10-14: John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance… 10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked. 11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” 13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them. 14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.” Luke 3:19-20: But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. Matthew 3:5-6: People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

  • SAINT MICHAEL the ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH
ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON SAINT MICHAEL the ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH JULY 11, 2021 | FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. Mark 6:7 1801 SAGE ROAD, HOUSTON, TEXAS 77056 | (713) 621-4370 | STMICHAELCHURCH.NET ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH The Gospel This week’s Gospel and the one for next week describe how Jesus sent the disciples to minister in his name and the disciples’ return to Jesus afterward. These two passages, however, are not presented together in Mark’s Gospel. Inserted between the two is the report of Herod’s fears that Jesus is John the Baptist back from the dead. In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus’ ministry is presented in connection with the teaching of John the Baptist. Jesus’ public ministry begins after John is arrested. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus, who preached the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. While we do not read these details about John the Baptist in our Gospel this week or next week, our Lectionary sequence stays consistent with Mark’s theme. Recall that last week we heard how Jesus was rejected in his hometown of Nazareth. The insertion of the reminder about John the Baptist’s ministry and his death at the hands of Herod in Mark’s Gospel makes a similar point. Mark reminds his readers about this dangerous context for Jesus’ ministry and that of his disciples. Preaching repentance and the Kingdom of God is dangerous business for Jesus and for his disciples.

  • President's Monthly Letter Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels September 2020 Dear Guardian Families
President’s Monthly Letter Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels September 2020 Dear Guardian Families, Happy Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels! Yesterday we celebrated our patronal feast and the 3rd anniversary of the dedication of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel. As our fourth year is now underway, we can look back and celebrate the many accomplishments of SMA in the past and look forward to our exciting future together, confident that our patron, St. Michael, will defend us in the battle. Whenever I visit the doctor, there are four words I never like to hear: “Now this may hurt.” That message brings about two responses in me, the first is one of dread… it means I’m going to be experiencing something I really don’t want! Secondly, I brace in anticipation of what is about to happen; I’m able to make myself ready for the event. September is the month of Our Lady of Sorrows (in Latin, the seven “dolors”). When Mary encountered Simeon in the temple, she heard the same message in a more intense form, “this is going to hurt.” The prophet told her, A sword will pierce through your own soul. Mary, a new mother still in wonder at the miraculous birth of her child, now hears that her life is going to be integrally tied to his sufferings. So September is always a month linked to compassion; the compassion Mary had for her son and has for us. It is also a reminder of the compassion we can have for each other.
