St. Parish We, as St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Parish, recognize that we are the Body of Christ. Our purpose is to honor God and grow as one in Jesus Christ. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we strive to serve others through Christian Service, Prayer and Worship, Education and Evangelization. We keep within our hearts and minds the statement of faith and conviction of our patron St. Thomas the Apostle, “My Lord and my God.” X-Rays Howdy! In my homily this past week I spoke to the possible lack of contentment that the Jewish people may have felt in their worship that caused Jesus to cleanse the temple. And that lack of contentment could have stemmed from them being cheated by the leadership, but not so much as they bought animals for sacrifice and or exchanged money having come from distant lands to do so in honor of the Passover feast, but in the lack of care or concern felt for them by temple leadership. These leaders were to be present to these pilgrims and I think Jesus saw their disregard for them and reacted. That lack of contentment in worship is something that rang in my mind as I wrote my homily. In writing out a homily, I try as I know Deacons Fred & Skip do too, to relate the scriptures to our daily living. We try to offer examples from everyday living of past times or of recent events that will help center these readings to your life (and ours too). There is relevance in these scripture readings so offered to us! Sometimes it is difficult to find a point of connection with all three readings (although relating all three readings isn’t Fish Fry Fridays recommended, but relating only the gospel to the first Almost Gone!!! reading or staying with the second reading by itself). Page 4 St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Garden City RELIGIOUS FORMATION CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES LENT DECORATING SOUP BOWLS We are more than half way through Lent; time to take stock of how our Lent practices and promises are holding up. Think back to the plans made before Ash Wednesday. Have we been faithful to our plans and promises? Congratulations, if the answer is – Yes…keep up the prayerful, good work. If things have not gone as we planned, it is never too late to begin again or just begin. Recommit to the things that will bring us closer to Jesus. Try activities the whole family can do. Pray the Rosary, Stations of the Cross, or read Scripture for the coming weekend. Turn off the TV and other electronic devices for an evening and read a book or play a game together. Come to Mass as a Family on the weekend. Have a simple soup, salad, or bread supper and put your savings in the Rice Bowl. Clean your closets – donate unused toys and clothing. Help children create a Lenten centerpiece for your dinner table or make a Countdown-to-Easter calendar with something special to sacrifice or do each day. Our young people are very creative with a little direction. Family activities foster togetherness, help you know each other better, and make you appreciate each person’s gifts and talents. They also help you pass on the Faith. Your children come to know and value their Catholic Faith by watching us and taking part in the prayers, practices, and traditions we share with them. Christian Service opportunity for March benefits local nursing homes. They need new or gently used paperback books, playing cards, puzzles, games, snack items, etc. Children might like to make cards or draw picture to donate. Items may be placed in the Helping Hands basket near the office in each building. FIRST EUCHARIST Thanks to all the Families who brought their child for the Retreat yesterday. It was a wonderful day of prayer and fun activities. We signed our names in the Book of Enrollment, baked bread, made a Remember Cross and created cards for the home bound and suffering members of our parish. We ended with a tour of the Church and a prayer sharing the bread we had baked. Moms and Dads were able to participate too. Families should be working on your “at home” materials. These sheets reinforce and support what your children are doing in class. Remember to pray with them and bring them to Mass each week. CONFIRMATION This Wednesday, March 18th at 6:30 p.m. in Church we are hosting the Sponsor Candidate Event. If a sponsor is not able to accompany your teen, a parent must attend with them.
