SUPPORT THE CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

Restore the Church & Build the Future

No longer ruled by a repressive regine, the Georgian people are rebuilding the Church and society after decades of per- secution. They have made strides to heal their wounds, but work remains to be done. Catholics in Georgia live primar- ily in rural villages, where it is all but impossible to find medical care. Vulnerable popularions like the elderly, disa- bled, children, expectant mothers suffer the most. But be- cause of you, this suffering is being alleviated by the love of Christ. With your support for the Collection for the School Ministry Stations of the Cross Every Friday Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE), the During Lent at 2:10 PM Church in Georgia has worked through the network of parishes to expand medical services to respond to the needs of these remote villages. Your generosity is balm for the wounds of an abandoned people. You are bringing the light of Christ and strength of his healing so they know that they are not forgotten. Eduardo Gomez took three public buses, starting at dawn, to be the first to arrive at the CRS YouthBuild program to grab a seat and put his head down to avoid having to talk to his fellow students in Guatemala. He was so scared that he couldn’t express himself very well. After graduating from YouthBuild he is a new person: a parish youth ministry leader who started his own bakery business. And, he is much more self-confident. The intensive 6-month program, provides employment, education and leadership opportunities to young people, ages 16-25, in a loving, respectful environment. In America and the Caribbean, youth are three times more likely than adults to be unemployed. They coprose more than half the population, but increasing violence and lack of economic opportunity have pushed them to join the hundreds of thousands of adults making the perilous journey to the U.S. After completing YouthBuild, 70% of young people get a , start a business or go back to school. As we prepare for the holy season it is important to come together as a family and reflect on the crosses of hunger, poverty and war that our brothers and sisters forced to flee their homes carry. In so doing, we pledge to stand alongside these members of our human family, supporting them as the Gospel calls us to do.

March 17th Update ENCOUNTER ANNET - In Uganda, we encounter Annet and her family, children forced to flee violence, searching for stability. How are we called to welcome the stranger in our midst? How can you support those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org.

Lent Pray Fast Give

PRAYER is the action that leads people to God. We take time away from the distractions of the world to turn to God to contemplate, to listen and to talk to Him, to read His words and meditate on them, to be one with Him. Prayer gives meaning to Lenten practices, which should draw us closer to Him.

FASTING is restricting consumption, depriving yourself of both good and bad things for the glory of God. This means normally watching what you eat, on a day that is practiced, one regular meal and two small ones. During Lent, we fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Abstinence is practiced all Fri- days of Lent.

ALMSGIVING is the action that leads us to see others love them, listen to them and give them our time, help, advice, money, shelter, company, affection. It is not limited to giving material goods, it is the gift of self, it is based on Charity to love God and others as oneself. To give alms is to be united to Christ in his poverty.

Abstinence requires Catholics fourteen and older to abstain from eating meat on all Fridays during Lent. Meat includes both mammals and fowl, such as chicken. Anyone whose health would be seriously impaired by abstinence from meat is not bound by this norm but in its place should seek to do some kind of act of charity. While one is free not to fast beyond his/her 60th year, he/she may also choose to keep the fast if they believe it will not affect their health.
