MILLER Madison, WI 53713 It is commonly accepted that the birth narratives in Luke supply an "Old Testament" prologue to the life and sayings of Jesus.' Zechariah, Elizabeth, Simeon, and Anna act as prophets of the coming Messiah and of the transformations he would make in salvation history. John appears in the role of a priest who would anoint the new Messiah and king? ~lthou~hthe narrative of John's miraculous birth has been recognized as a forerunner of the miracle story of Jesus' birth,) another function of the story bears investigation. John's birth narrative sets the stage for Luke's larger narrative goal, realized in Acts: the emergence of the gospel from the Jewish community to the Gentile world. In Luke's narrative, baptism becomes the new sign of the Christian church once the Jewish hegemony of blood lines is broken. The contribution of the story of John's birth to this larger narrative is the subject of this note. In Acts 10 and 11 the issue is whether the uncircumcised may receive baptism and become part of the Christian community without first becoming proper Jews. The answer is presented in 10:45-48 by a heavenly sign; the uncircumcised may indeed be baptized and received into the community. DODSON SPRING 2017 Introduction Biblical authors often employ literary techniques to communicate their messages with enhanced force. They were not, for example, interested in theology or historiography alone, but also in aesthetics.1 In other words, their focus was not directed solely on simply presenting information, but also on how the material was presented literarily. Authors would utilize many techniques in their writing such as repetition, chiasms, and typology to connect stories, to emphasize themes, and to flesh out nuanced truths. This paper will argue that Luke, in the Book of Acts, implements the aesthetic technique of allusion and typology to enrich his narrative. More specifically, this paper will seek to demonstrate Luke’s portrayal of Paul as the anti-Jonah in Acts. -

Keller October 2019 The “I am” statements of Jesus The purpose of this paper is to briefly show the significance of the “I AM” statements Jesus makes in the book of John. The beginning will focus on the background of the phrase “I AM” in its origination and significance in the Old Testament, and how the Israelites view the nature of the statement. This will be followed by a special emphasis in both content and purpose of the seven “I am” statements and conclude with the significance of some unique “I am” phrases. The significance of the “I Am” statements made by Jesus cannot be understated, and they are unique in the Gospel of John. Some phrases clearly identify Christ with God, while others, like the seven “I am” statements, are used in conjunction with a metaphor. When Jesus uses the phrase “I am” in this sense, He is not just equating Himself with God, but equating Himself with the attributes of God such as sustainer, redeemer, protector, and guide. “In most instances, Jesus is presented as ‘exegeting’ his own significance in light of Old Testament images.”1 It will be helpful then to understand the significance of the phrase “I AM” in the Old Testament and then take a look at each of the statements in the New Testament. אֶהְ יֶה - I AM In Exodus 3 God gave Himself the title “I AM” (hayah); a phrase which literally “means the eternally self-existent being.”2 God uses the title several more times in Deut. -

JONAH: The Prophet Who Could Not Change YK 2017-5778 One night a ship’s captain was on the open sea when he spotted a light straight ahead in the distance. He flashed his signal light telling the other ship to veer 10 degrees to the West so they could safely avoid a collision. There was a return signal telling the captain to veer 10 degrees to the East. The captain signaled “I am a captain and demand you change your course. Who are you?” The response was, “I am a seaman and I am telling you to change your course.” The captain then responded, “I command this large freighter with an important cargo.” The seaman answered, “I am a seaman who monitors this lighthouse.” 1 The questions that might be elicited, Are you the Captain who feels he should not change? Are you the lighthouse attendant who cannot change? Or are you one who can easily change? One of the questions that must be asked on this holiest of days is, “Do we truly have the ability to change?” Are we like the lighthouse or are we the captains of our own ships? Having come to this day searching for our better selves and hopefully having passed through a period of internal wrestling with ourselves, the goal should be that we enter this new year not only with hope but also with a plan for improvement. To begin the year without some ideas and aspirations for improvement is to ignore every one of the multiple lists of transgressions, denying any faults. -
Album of the Week: Descendents’ Hypercaffium
Album Of The Week: Descendents’ Hypercaffium Spazzinate In this crazy year we need punk rock more than ever. We need to listen to some amplified, angst-filled, guitar-driven music that ignites the rambunctiousness in all of us. Seems like the perfect time for the Descendents to put out their first album in 12 years, right? The punk legends from Manhattan Beach, California, have their seventh album, Hypercaffium Spazzinate, out and the fearsome foursome have gone back to what they do best. That’s unleashing feverish riffs, pristine drumming and lyrics that come straight from the heart. The title is an ode to frontman Milo Aukerman’s former career as a research biochemist while the album itself harks back to the Descendents’ earlier material in tone and style. When the band’s previous album Cool To Be You came out in 2004, polished pop punk was all over the place. Being a band that are considered to be pioneers of pop punk (which I find to be weird), the Descendents went with the times with Cool To Be You and put out a clean sounding album. Hypercaffium Spazzinate brings back the band’s edge that they had in the ’80s. The album’s production quality has a little bit of grit and that’s what a punk band should sound like. Pop punk is a bit of an oxymoron in my opinion. Punk started out as a genre that counteracted what pop music was in the ’70s and then punk bands started bringing melody. That’s what makes it pop? Maybe that’s why we have crappy bands like All Time Low and The Maine corrupting the youth, though that’s not the Descendents’ fault. -

FRETHEIM Luther Seminary St. Paul, Minnesota HIS IS A CLASSIC TEXT.1 IT HAS CAPTIVATED THE IMAGINATION OF MANY INTER- Tpreters, drawn both by its literary artistry and its religious depths. This is also a problem text. It has occasioned deep concern in this time when the abuse of chil- dren has screamed its way into the modern consciousness: Is God (and by virtue of his response, Abraham) guilty of child abuse in this text? There is no escaping the question, and it raises the issue as to the continuing value of this text. I. MODERN READINGS Psychoanalyst Alice Miller claims2 that Genesis 22 may have contributed to an atmosphere that makes it possible to justify the abuse of children. She grounds her reflections on some thirty artistic representations of this story. In two of Rem- brandt’s paintings, for example, Abraham faces the heavens rather than Isaac, as if in blind obedience to God and oblivious to what he is about to do to his son. His hands cover Isaac’s face, preventing him from seeing or crying out. Not only is Isaac silenced, she says (not actually true), one sees only his torso; his personal fea- tures are obscured. Isaac “has been turned into an object. This is the biggest misconception in Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRA guerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians, these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist, etc.' linked with violence. Politics in so called "Muslim countries" may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to God' and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'. Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self- defense, in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock. -
