Makerere University Joint AIDS Program University School of Medicine PEPFAR Uganda Science Summit Translating Research into Programs for 2020 and Beyond January 13-14, 2020 Uganda Project Design and Methods

GOAL: EIPHIV aims to equip next generation of HIV care providers with knowledge and skills for patient- centered team-based care aligned with Uganda MoH guidelines and principles of continuous quality improvement

• Eight-month project competitively awarded to /MJAP by UCSF- AFREhealth partnership

• Collaborating with four Ugandan Universities, their affiliated hospitals/HIV clinics and Uganda MoH

• Curriculum of 17 Modules of common cases and topical issues in HIV care, developed by an interprofessional panel of 11 experts in HIV care, research and education.

• Training= at least 8 facilitator led modules offered in two days to groups of 6-8 interprofessional learners, Methods. Inaugural meeting at MakCHS and institutional entry meetings; Offered TOT to faculty at Mak/MJAP and collaborating institutions (CIs) by expert panelists; CIs to cascade the trainings to the next generation providers • Regular meetings ( often online) with committee members to review progress and provide feedback • Trainers and trainees online/electronic evaluations. • Support and monitor interprofessional practice and trainee engagement in HIV care (post training) • Team-based patient-centered HIV care, use of MoH guidelines and implementation of CQI Project Implementation Status

• The small group discussions are ideal for learning ‘”I think I must commend the facilitation style, there was mutual respect and tolerance. I was actually impressed with how much knowledge people had. I was like, oh I didn’t know that and yet I am their supervisor in other fields, I mean I was there with a midwife who seemed to know a lot of HIV than I did’- Gynaecologist Kabale Univ

Systems level Partnership between MoH and academic centers provides efficient means of rapidly disseminating evidence-based HIV practice.

Targeting HIV training to learners about to transition between pre-service and independent professional practice, can help ensure that critical thinking /emphasis on quality is 'hard-wired' into lifelong professional practice

PEPFAR Uganda Science Summit January 2020 Implications for National HIV Response

• EIPHIV is enabling optimized team-based HIV care. This emphasis on inter-professional response can enhance linkages along HIV care continuum and realize efficiencies in use of resources • EIPHIV can secure PEPFAR's investment in HIV response to date, by ensuring next generation of HCPs are able to deliver high quality care and consolidate gains made to date • Adopt inter-professional response; with all health care workers (nurses, doctors, clinical officers, social workers and others) appreciate each others’ critical role, value/ purpose • Sustainability: Institutionalize IPE for HIV health care providers • Promote use of IT in IPE and IPP even at peripheral facilities improve quality of care

• Continuous quality improvement to become a key component of HIV Care

• More efficient provision of high quality HIV care with greater patient satisfaction
