Students are equipped with hands-on skills that enable them create jobs and earn extra income. Our team brings you an exclusive engagement with Kukundakwe Sandra, a second year student of Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (evening).

Kukundakwe Sandra is a third born of nine children. Her mother is a tailor and her father is a driver. She joined university at a time when six of her siblings were still studying at different lower levels. Back at home, there was competition for already meagre resources. Sandra, found herself in a situation where she was constantly struggling with raising resources to cater for such needs as transport, rent, food and purchasing scholastic materials like handouts and general survival.

Sandra had experience in making juice because she always made juice at home for the family. As a second year student of Bachelor of Accounting and Finance, she decided to find a way of making her own money instead of competing for the meagre resources back at home. She started the business of selling juice immediately after her first semester at campus. After exams, instead of going back home for holidays, she decided to stay around and start up something to bring in income. She started her trade in Bugolobi, selling juice at URA offices taking advantage of her friend who lived there. Despite her aggressiveness and hard work, Sandra admits that there are times when she seeks support from her parents to send her food to supplement her efforts.

Just like in any other business, Sandra faces challenges. Sometimes her clients fail to meet the price at which she sells the juice. She also adds no preservatives in her juice, which gives it a short life span.

During such times when clients aren’t forthcom- ing, she sells the juice at a lower price despite the cost of the fruits in the market. This leads to losses.
