Editorial

It was a huge move for us in 2008 to the , travelling 660 miles from Aberdeen with a toddler and baby. Though my husband Daniel was from these parts, , I had no expectations of what life would be like here. North East Scotland where most of my family were felt like a world away from Salcombe!

As it was, the four of us soon found ourselves welcomed with open arms into a fabulous and vibrant community that is both close and in the summer cosmopolitan. I managed to juggle some fascinating jobs which kept me close to the community, including being a pre-school assistant, a chef, and a pastoral worker at the church. I also helped co- found the Salcombe Community Gospel Choir.

Now I find myself setting off on another equally exciting journey - the path to ordination. I am presently at the end of my first of two years at St Mellitus College doing an MA in Christian Leadership. The pandemic has meant that until a few weeks ago all the classes were on Zoom! Part of the training involves coming to the Mission Community with a particular focus on helping out at . This is the most rewarding part of my training and I am so grateful for the love and support received. I’ve had a go at doing all sorts of new things including leading worship and preaching, and the support and oversight of Rev Matt Rowland’s mentoring has really helped me gain confidence.

I’m sharing this because as the saying goes “God moves in mysterious ways” and perhaps someone reading this will be inspired to explore a new avenue, a calling, or maybe even a ministry? This is my turn to send out a little nudge. God is very much the God of surprises and has a plan for each of us.

Malborough Church

The changes in times to the Church services are working out well and it is lovely to see so many attending the Sunday morning 10.30am service. We also have music and a small choir which makes such a difference and lifts our spirits. The bell ringers have also restarted recently.

The Wednesday morning 10am service is becoming increasingly well attended, and we are very grateful to Trevor Becker for providing beautiful and reflective piano music for the service. Thanks to our interns there is also a Compline service on Sunday evening at 6.30pm at Malborough. I understand it can be difficult for some to attend, but it is worth attending if you can in my opinion - a calming, peaceful and reflective short service, accompanied by beautiful music (thanks to our musicians).

On Sunday June 27th we are having a celebration of the New Parish, and a joint service will be held at 4pm in Malborough Church. There will be no other services on that day, but I hope it will be a wonderful service and am looking forward to reporting on it in the next edition.

We’ve had some maintenance work done on the roof - no more leaks! Margaret Ellis will continue to send out the weekly newsletter as some people are still unable to attend the services. Again, nothing to report on the social front, but hopefully when lockdown lifts further we can restart our usual activities.

I think you will all agree that it has been wonderful having our interns living and working in the parish. They have contributed greatly to the life of the Church and brought in energy and enthusiasm, as well as readings, sermons and music. Thank you all, and a sad goodbye to those of you who are leaving in the coming weeks. It won’t be the same without you and we wish you all the best in your chosen paths.

Looking forwards to bringing you more updates

Malborough Baptist Church

Despite a chilly April and May, chapel life is again warming up and the congregation is reviving in numbers. People seem to be reverting to the happy smiles we knew before the pandemic began. Some folk are still shielding but will join us as things become safer and we are able to fill our lungs to sing lustily as we did before. Caution is still the watchword and everyone continues to sign in, muffling their greetings through their masks. Our recent services have been well attended, especially on Trinity Sunday when all the available seats were filled and a few folk took to the gallery. Naturally, singing has been greatly restricted but we have been able to enjoy new hymns whose words have been projected onto the screen. Our web-master has treated us to a wide variety of music through her box of tricks at the back of the room. We have been particularly blessed by the Bible passages spoken by some of the younger members. Increasingly, more of our members are feeling free to pray openly at the set time in the services. Roger, one of our stalwarts, keeps us aware of the needs of persecuted Christians around the world for whom we pray. Our midweek support group on Thursday mornings remains popular and is greatly appreciated by those members who live alone. The “church mouse” Facebook medium is followed almost daily on people’s smart-phones and is proving invaluable in keeping our more distant members in touch On the 13th of June we celebrate our two hundred and sixth church birthday and we are all praising the Lord for His grace and his love. By His continued grace, we hope to soldier on until He either comes, or He calls.

Salcombe Library

We are finally open again! Our new temporary opening hours are:

Tuesdays 2pm-5pm Wednesdays 10am-12noon Thursdays 2pm-5pm

(note: no volunteer session on Thursday mornings)

At the time of writing the Library looks a little different and a new one-way system is in place.

Sadly, there is no access to the public computers, but we have created a desk space for anyone wishing to use the WiFi with their laptop. Only 4 people can be in the Library space at any one time and you also need to fill out a Test & Trace form or scan the QR code upon arrival into the main Library area.

I have a little video on our facebook page if you’d like a virtual tour: https://fb.watch/61T6I3GSk9/

Mobile Library The Mobile library is still able to visit the Park Rise/Beadon Drive area until the end of the year, so you have an extra chance to grab some books. The next visit date will be Wednesday July 28th 11.35- 12.05

14

The Summer Reading Challenge kicks off again from 10th July The theme this year is Wild World Heroes. Six friends live in a coastal town called Westville (not unlike Salcombe!) who all want to help solve environmental problems they see around them. Every 2 of the 6 books a child reads help unlock a sticker which shows how the problem can be solved. We will have packs available to pick up at the library and hope to run another Pebble Hunt for children to look out for and bring into the library for extra goodies. Do pop in and say ‘Hello’, we’d love to see you again! Becky Wall

Totnes or ? Which better describes our Parliamentary Constituency ?

The historical name of the Constituency derives from a time when Totnes town was the major and central conurbation within the constituency. Successive changes to the constituency have meant that Totnes is no longer the largest town nor the centre of the constituency. Residents of other towns such as Kingsbridge and Salcombe feel that the constituency name of Totnes neither reflects their respective areas nor the composition of the parliamentary seat. A constituency should be identifiable to all of its constituents. Our MP Anthony Mangnall is proposing that the Boundary Commission now changes the name from Totnes to South Devon. if you agree you can take the simple, and quick step, of submitting a very short comment to the Boundary Commission calling for the name to be changed. You can do this by using the following link: www.bcereviews.org.uk/node/add/informed-representation/6489/ You might like to consider some of the following wording for your submission:

In light of the Boundary Commission’s recent proposed changes to the Constituency of Totnes I would like to propose and urge that its name is altered to South Devon. In changing the name from Totnes to South Devon you will be creating a constituency that is more reflective of the wide area that it covers as well as the residents of , Salcombe, Kingsbridge, and Dartmouth. I hope you will consider this request as it has long been my view and that of many other residents of South Devon that we should have a constituency name that reflects the many different areas and parts of this parliamentary seat.

We need as many people as possible to have their say on this matter. Closing date is August 2nd 2021. (More information at bcereviews.org.uk)

You may be aware that in December 2020, CDS (Connecting Devon and Somerset), with support from the Government, signed contracts with Airband to deliver full fibre broadband to 40,154 homes and businesses in earmarked areas of Devon and Somerset and require the construction of an estimated 2,419 miles of fibre network. Delivery will be in phases between 2021 and 2024.

As part of this new Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) Broadband network, Salcombe has a number of premises within this contract that are to benefit directly. Many other premises along the fibre route and within close proximity may also be able to access the network once completed.

The new network that will service Salcombe is due to be completed in Quarter 2, 2022. Surveying is imminent which will raise curiosity within your community. We intend to address this in advance where possible.

As the Community Liaison Executive for your region, I will be visiting your town in the near future to engage with your community and give details of the technology, products and process that will be available for the project, and the benefits of full fibre broadband to your residential and business communities.

If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEER MINIBUS DRIVERS

Salcombe Minibus is looking for more volunteers to drive our minibus to take passengers out for shopping or visit local attractions. You will get the chance to meet some Salcombe characters and exchange a yarn or two while helping them get out and about.

You need a driving licence which shows Category D1 in the list of approved categories. This is normally on the licence if you passed your car driving test before 1st January 1997 and you are between the ages of 21 and 70. The bus is not heavy to drive, you’ll get trained on how to operate everything and you will always have a courier with you to help with the passengers etc.

If you fancy having a quick test drive with no passengers on board, just to see if you like it, please let me know. I don’t mind if you try it and then say it is not for you.

If you can spare half a day a month for a simple shopping trip to Kingsbridge, we would love you to join our friendly group of volunteers. Of course, with a little experience you could take on longer trips, if you like, and enjoy days out in or and other local attractions. It is often a rewarding and fun experience, highly valued by the senior residents in the town. We can’t pay you for your time but you get to visit many local places of beauty & fun, all for free. Please call me if you have any questions or want to give it a go, with no obligations.

Thanks,

Tim Mattocks, 01548 842140 or 07970 374666. Chairman, Salcombe Minibus

They have had a trial run out in the minibus to learn its idiosyncrasies! Of course, if you know of anyone else who might like to volunteer, please ask them to call me.

The lifting of restrictions on June 21st has been delayed. We have therefore cancelled all trips in July and now plan to restart in August.

Below is our proposed schedule for August and September. Please call Margaret Moore (01548 842006) if you want to book a place on any of these trips.

20

Malborough with South Huish C of E (VC) Primary School

‘The roots to grow, the wings to fly. All within the love of God’ The whole school enjoyed a day of outdoor learning at East Soar Farm in the sunshine, working in their class bubbles. The children had a guided walk, took part in a bug hunt, did a spot of pond dipping and took part in some team games. They enjoyed some spectacular views whilst out on their cliff top walks. Year 1 enjoyed a visit to church, the children looked for and discussed the features of a church and what makes it a special place for Christians. Class 3 have been looking at states of matter in their science lessons. They have been looking at changing states. They made Mug Cakes and talked about how this is an irreversible change. The end product was delicious. Year 5 have been exploring the canoeing with Singing Paddles. They had a great time perfecting their paddling technique, which required a lot of co-ordination. The children enjoyed exploring the quiet creeks of the Salcombe and Kingsbridge Estuary. They spotted lots of different wildlife along the way. In spite of some horrid weather, the year 6 children enjoyed 4 days of their cycling proficiency training; they all passed with flying colours. The children welcomed a very special visitor into school before half term - Elma the elephant came to visit as part of our mental health and wellbeing week. The children sat and read to Elma and chatted to each other about their worries or concerns. The seeds the children planted in the school garden are now growing very well. The whole school each morning is enjoying their wake and shake lessons, all dancing to music in the playground. Class 3 ended their Geography unit with a bang or rather a fizz. The children had all made volcanoes and then added a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, washing up liquid, food colouring and vinegar; the results were rather spectacular! Year 6 have been learning about Nicho boxes. These are part of Mexican culture and each box honours or remembers a central figure

22

in their lives. The children designed and made their boxes to represent something that is important to them. The children finally have all been making good use of the school pool and are all enjoying their daily swimming lessons. The children in class 1 have been writing about going on a journey in a bubble which took them far away to some very special places. Year 5 had a wonderful day on Dartmoor. Normally they would go for the week, but instead this year they could only go for the day, but they had a wonderful time exploring the moors in the sunshine. The whole school are continuing to hold their monthly services in the school playground and we have been so lucky to have with us so many visitors, Father Daniel, Oscar, Jassen, Joshua and this month we welcomed Austin.

South Hams Centre

At last we can start to make plans for the future and the first of the South Hams Centre’s social events for 2021 are underway. In June we arranged an evening cruise on The Kingsbridge Estuary and this month we have two more events:-

Tuesday 20th July a Tour of Southdown Farm, near (TQ7 3JX) starting at 10.00 am. Emma Reece, the local area NT Ranger, will show us the work that has been carried out over the past year. This will be a level and gentle walk, there is no charge and the tour will finish at about 11.30 am.

There is no need to book for either of these events and non- members are very welcome to come along.

Overbeck’s Garden is now open Sunday to Thursday and looks wonderful! Everyone needs to book a visit in advance and new bookings are released each Friday for visits for the the following week.
