CHRISTMAS FLOWERS

Despite not knowing if there will be any services in the church over the festive season, WE ARE going to decorate the church with flowers! Even if only a few services take place, there are still people who come in the church on most days for some silent prayer or to light a candle, so we want to make it look Christmassy.

Hopefully, some of you on the flower rota will be prepared to arrange a window display, a pedestal or the rails next to the choir stalls. If any of you have any artificial flowers that would be suitable in the church decorations, they would be most welcome. We will, of course, be ordering fresh flowers, but a few artificial ones would be useful. Daniel would like the church to be decorated a bit earlier this year and so we are thinking that Friday, 11 December and Saturday, 12 December would be a good time to start.

Although most of the places are well distanced, the flower vestry could become a bit overcrowded, so that is why we are suggesting two days for the arrangements. I have also been asked whether the crosses that go on the pillars could be made up, so if there are any of you who would like to decorate one, please let me know as well as letting me know if you would like to help with the other arrangements. (Some of you have already told me that you would like to help). You will have to bring your own flask of tea or coffee I am afraid, as we are still not able to do refreshment. Let us look on the bright side though and help bring Christmas to Holy Trinity.

Editorial

At the time of writing it remains unclear what kind of restrictions will be in place for Advent and Christmas. So, although we are advertising services this is all dependent on what we will be allowed to do.

Some years back, while conducting a funeral around Christmas time I said in the address that people would know the hope of Christmas even if the joy of the season seemed diminished. That sentiment seems very relevant for today. For the kernel of Christmas is the message of hope, that God has sent his son into the world, to become one of us, so that he may save us.

In this modern age with all its benefits we might wonder why do we need to be saved, why bother with a saviour? What trouble are we in that we supposedly need the sacrificial death of a first century carpenter’s son to put us right? Isn’t this just olde worlde baggage that we jettisoned around the enlightenment?

And, there will be those who argue that God, if he is to have a role with us, is fundamentally a kind of super therapist, a remote deity whose job is to jump in during personal or national emergencies while at other times affirm us in all our wants and desires. He may adjust those affirmations depending on whether we’ve been naughty or nice.

Shocking biblical vision is radically different from this. It tells us from the very first pages of Genesis that we are to exist in the deepest of communion with our creator and that he had created everything to fit around that. We are made for Eden. Though our world is good it is not Eden, and can never be Eden until all things are restored in Him (Revelation 21).

Perhaps this pandemic with all its existential concerns may restore us to a deeper vision of what we are meant to be? But, even if festivities are reduced let us not be afraid or anxious, instead let the hope of Christ’s birth ring deeply in our hearts.

Blessings Fr Daniel

“The Three in One” Delivery

Two of our 3-in-1 distributors have retired recently: Libby Blumer to look after her husband, and Lynda Carter who is moving to be nearer family. We would like to thank them both for the many magazines they have delivered over the years and wish them well for the future. A ‘thank you’ too, to Cathy Drew who has offered to take over Libby’s round in Forster Road and Shadycombe.

Situations Vacant

We are now in need of two more volunteers to deliver the 3-in-1, one to deliver to nine households in Beadon Road and Beadon Drive, and one to deliver to four households in Higher Batson.

If you are able to help with either of these, please contact me, either by email at [email protected] or by phone on 01548 842244. Please think carefully whether you could help with this. The 3-in-1 is more than a Church magazine, it is also a valuable community magazine containing a lot of useful community news and information, and many people would miss it if we were no longer able to deliver it to their door. ‘Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness’. James 1:2-3

“The idea that if you have true faith your life will be trouble-free is a lie”, writes Marcus Nodder.

“Those with genuine faith will ‘meet trials of various kinds”. The word ‘meet’ is literally ‘fall in with’. It implies the hardship comes suddenly and without warning. All is going well and then suddenly you get a diagnosis; the phone rings and you get some bad news; a loved one dies; something comes up at work; you lose your job; a relationship blows up in your face; lockdown is imposed again.

How should we respond? ‘Count it all joy’ . We are to ‘count it ’, that is consider, think, regard it, all joy because of what we know – ‘for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness’. Trials test our faith. They test whether or not it is genuine – and they refine it.

And in particular ’the testing of your faith produces steadfastness’. Steadfastness is endurance, perseverance, the capacity to bear up and keep going in the face of difficulty. It’s an essential quality in the Christian life.

How do you develop endurance, stamina? You go for runs, or join a Zumba or spinning class. By doing that you’re putting your cardiovascular system under pressure and stress, forcing it to work hard in a way it doesn't sitting at your desk. And that way it grows stronger.

So with faith. Without testing, faith is weak, unhealthy, quickly out of breath, and won’t last the course.

Trials are for our spiritual good, and so we can be thankful for them – even this current lockdown. Let’s pray that we will emerge from lockdown in a few weeks’ time with a stronger faith and more endurance, having been forced to rely on the Lord more, dig deeper into his Word, pray more earnestly, repent of sin, and reach out to one another more for support and encouragement. submitted by Suzy Andrews

We welcome Jassen, who has joined St Peter’s Foundation as an intern.

Profile

“Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” (1 Tim. 4:12 NIV)

Since my youth ministry days, this Bible verse has been an encouragement to me, something I could not forget. Though this was originally a letter by the Apostle Paul to Timothy as he served as a young pastor at that time, there is a message in this verse that speaks directly to my heart – that regardless of my age, I can live for God and lead others to himself.

I am originally from the Philippines. I was born and raised in a Roman Catholic home where I got to learn that God exists. I was taught how to pray and go to church. However, I never really understood the gospel – that God’s only Son, Jesus Christ came to earth, died and rose from the dead, and that his work on the cross was the only way for me to be forgiven of my sin and be reconciled to God. In my second year of university where I studied Accountancy, I heard the gospel during a Bible study. It took me a while to believe it but at some point, God enabled me to see that I am a sinner and that I need a Saviour. So I repented of my old sinful ways and put my faith in the Lord Jesus. Since then, I have been walking joyfully with God and serving in the church. I spent most of my years leading the youth and music ministry while having a full-time accounting job.

As the years go by, I started having the desire to study Theology. I wanted to know more about God and to be trained to teach his Word. In 2016, I heard about Tyndale Theological Seminary in the Netherlands which opened an opportunity for me to pursue theological studies and to be a missionary outside the Philippines. After some time of praying and planning, I then left my job, family, home, and flew to the Netherlands. I studied Master of Divinity at Tyndale Theological Seminary from June 2017 to June 2020. During these years, I also served as chaplain’s assistant and

10

worship team leader. At the church where I became a member, I led the music ministry and a missional community group. My three years of living in the Netherlands has been so beautiful. I have learned so many things about God, myself, and life in general. As soon as I finished my seminary studies, I prayed for God to lead me to the next step. I heard of the internship opportunity at St Peter’s Foundation through a former fellow congregant at Grace Church Amsterdam. God has put his peace in my heart and the motivation to do it. I believe that through this internship, I’ll be able to continually do God’s call for me which is to serve as a missionary and be a blessing to the community. My prayer is that throughout my time in Devon, my love for God may never grow cold, that I may not grow weary in doing good works for him, that I may faithfully use my God-given gifts, talents, education and ministry experience for his glory alone. I aim to always make the Scripture, God’s Word, as the basis for every ministry or service I do (see 2 Timothy 3:16- 17). And I pray to do everything in love, lest it be counted as nothing (1 Corinthians 13).

REMEMBERING OUR LOVED ONES

Christmas will no doubt be very different this year, but we will still be remembering our loved ones and so some of the flowers in our Christmas arrangements will be in memory of those loved ones. The ‘In Memoriam’ lists will be placed at the foot of the altar pedestal, on the door into the narthex and in a few other places as well. If you would like to donate in memory of a loved one please can you hand your donation in to the office or put through my door (11 Platt Close, Beadon)? Please give the name of the person that you wish to be remembered and if you could put your donation in a yellow envelope that will be very helpful. Thank you .

The Friends of Holy Trinity Church, Salcombe

September 30th was the end of the Financial Year for the Friends. This year, 2020, has been a difficult one for charities; we did not have the Annual Grand Draw, coffee morning or other fund raising events.

The Ken Reed Concert did take place in early October, the beginning of our year, when Anna Kondrashina and Pavel Timofeyevski came and played for us their wonderful combination of flute and piano. The concert raised nearly £2,000 and was enjoyed by all.

The Friends have been in receipt of a number of exceptional gifts in 2020. Stella Hagyard, who died on the 11th December 2018, donated over £11,500 to our funds. Stella was deeply involved with the church in many different ways, from organising the making of hassocks and their maintenance, singing in the choir, editing the 3 in 1, sitting on the PCC, and drawing up the plans for the conversion of the Girls School to the Church Hall. She was also an enthusiastic member of Friends and is still greatly missed for her thoughtful and wise counsel.

Hazel Burkitt and the Beehives Pre-school held a concert and most generously gave the Friends £300. Hazel, the Beehives and the Brownies have come to the church on a number of occasions so these young people know what the inside of our church looks like. On one visit they tried their hand at Hand- bell ringing and they were not bad!

The third donation came from one of our Trustees who had a significant birthday but, instead of presents, took donations which were given to the Friends; a most generous action for which we are exceedingly grateful.

Carolyn has continued running the 100 club, this years’ lucky number belonged to:- V J Rowse, A Merritt, J Parkes, N Barret, D Lawrence, H Cummings, P Bromwich, E Rowse, P Coulson, S Reed, and E Stanley. We still have a few numbers unallocated so speak to Carolyn.

12

It is true, you never know what is around the corner, and 2020 has financially been a good year for the Friends, but we have missed the fellowship of working together. As Christmas approaches, stay safe and we wish you a very happy and blessed Christmas and all the best for 2021, wherever you are.

MALBOROUGH CHURCH

Well, here we are once again in ‘lockdown’ as I write these notes and, therefore, not able to predict what our services will be for Christmas at this time. As soon as any information is to hand, you will be the first to know!!

Last month I asked if anyone would take the items to the Foodbank. Many thanks to Chris Slade Kernot-Turner for offering to do this.

We commenced our Wednesday morning communions again on 14th October and it was a real joy to be back mid-week with a good congregation. However, this only lasted four weeks and we are now not able to worship for the time being. Fr Daniel records this Wednesday service and it is then shown on Facebook and www.dailywithgod.co.uk the following day.

The school have managed to come into church for their assembly on two occasions – in three separate bubbles. The music and theme of the service is led by Trevor, Johnny & Becky from Youth for Christ and Oscar from St Peter’s Foundation.

Fr Harry Jevons took the Sunday service on 18th October and it was great to see him back in Malborough Church. His opening words were “It’s great to be back home – Alleluia!!” so we look forward to him being with us on the third Sunday of the month (after lockdown of course!).

Unfortunately the Remembrance Sunday service had to be cancelled, but Trevor laid the church’s wreath on behalf of us all at the War Memorial.

14

Trevor & myself were sworn in as Churchwardens on Monday 9th November (very much later than usual as it is normally in May but because of the pandemic it was put back to November). Now, once again, that had to be cancelled and we had to do it virtually on Zoom. All very different this year.

We are indebted to our musicians during this difficult time – Jane, Allan and Trevor, who have been providing music for us each Sunday. That leads me on to say that our new organist - Hilary Hudson - will commence her duties at the beginning of December. The Advent Service of Light has, of course, been cancelled but it is hoped it could be held slightly later if restrictions allow.

The Weekly Updates still seem to be going down very well and, in fact, this week I have had requests from two further people wishing to join the group. A big thank you must go to Fr Stephen for producing the service each week and to Margaret Harvey for her wonderful prayers. It is lovely to think we can keep people together in these troubling times.

No further news at this time – keep an eye on any notices when we have further information.

Take care and stay safe - Margaret Ellis

South Huish Parish

Christmas is certainly going to be different this year. At the time of going to print, there is no accurate information on what we will or will not be able to do with regard to Church Services during Advent and at Christmas. However, we have put together a provisional programme, and hope and pray we can go ahead. Please see the Holy Trinity Galmpton Facebook page for any updates or changes to the proposed programme.

If lockdown is lifted on December 2nd, the first Sunday service will be on 6th December. This will be the second Sunday in Advent. As before, all services will be held at Holy Trinity, Galmpton, and everyone is welcome. Please remember to wear a face covering and adhere to social distancing guidelines. St Clements remains closed as it is too small to allow for social distancing.

Sunday 6th December. Service at 10am Sunday 13th December. Service at 10am Sunday 20th December. Service at 10am Wednesday 23rd December. Nine Lessons and Music at 6.30pm Christmas Eve. Midnight Mass at 11.15pm Christmas Day. Service at 10am. Sunday 27th December. Benefice Service at 10am

We plan to make the Church as beautiful and cheery as possible for the Christmas season. There will be a decorated Christmas tree in every window in the church and to that end we are looking for any donations of Christmas tree decorations, or funds to purchase decorations and lights. If you’re able to help out, please contact the churchwarden, Bruce Williams (561621). Many thanks.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and joyous Christmas, and very best wishes for a happy and healthy 2021.

Julia Williams

Malborough Baptist Church

It’s a little like “ground-hog day” in America, where that little rodent pops out so see if winter has ended, sees its own shadow, and decides to go back to sleep for another month. Once more the ever-ready premises of our church have had to keep their doors closed. We managed to hold three full church services, well distanced, and merely humming to well- loved hymns. Nevertheless, there is virtual worship and fellowship continuing in individual homes and across our local Facebook facility, which we call ‘Church Mouse’. Every day there are brief conversations between members during which prayer needs are shared and spiritual insights appear. During the recent six-in-a-cell gatherings we have been studying the Acts of Apostles in a local home and we have been able to remind ourselves that God still moves among us, whatever constraints are laid upon us.

Youth outreach has still been happening, though the weekly contacts have been via gadgets and phones, thanks to our youth worker, Becky and our own Florence Nightingale, Rachel.

Sadly, our shared Remembrance services with friends at the Parish church have been curtailed, though we will probably nudge elbows as we lay our poppies at the cemetery. The Christian life is essentially spiritual and will flourish by the grace of God, whatever the future holds.

CHRISTMAS POST AID

We are going ahead with the Post Aid for Tear Fund as usual this year and the boxes will be there for a few days longer than usual. Most charities have suffered this year due to the virus so we feel that we must do our bit to help those poor children in third world countries.

The boxes will be in the usual places, Paul Coleman is happy for people to go into his shop to post cards in the box that will be there, and the other box, of course, will be outside the Spar shop. The boxes will be put out on Monday, 7 December and taken away on Friday, 18 December at 12 noon. It has been a hard year for all of us, but I am hoping that you will be able to give generously when you post your Christmas cards in the boxes. I am also hoping that many of the regular ‘post persons’ will once again volunteer to deliver the cards. I have already had a few volunteers who have offered to help and would love some more of you to volunteer as well.

If you would like to help deliver some of the cards, please phone me on 843654. Let us try and make this a Happy Christmas and maybe post a card for a person that we know is on their own in these difficult times! (Please, don’t forget that it is local cards only to be posted in the boxes.)

Thank you Ann Woodhatch

We park the minibus near the top of the town under some large trees. Those of you that have passed by the area recently may have noticed a difference!

I like trees and the wildlife they support but the leaves and twigs do fall on the bus and the resident birds love to decorate the paintwork. Every year, the trees are inspected for safety reasons; to make sure they are in good condition and not likely to drop large branches which would do a lot more than scratch the paintwork! Sadly, the last inspection identified ash die- back, so the trees have had to be cut down to reduce the spread of the disease and ensure safety. Thank you to all those involved.

The parking area is now much more open and I’m pleased to say that the bus paintwork will not suffer so much in future. There are still a lot of shrubs and other vegetation left which will no doubt grow up and provide cover for wild life in due course.

Changing topic, many of you know Mike and Lynda Carter, who have been great supporters of the minibus and several other local organisations for many years. Mike was both a driver and trustee of the charity and Lynda was a courier. Their dog (Summer) often used to curl up in the front and come along too.

With great sadness, I have to report that Mike and Lynda have resigned because they are leaving their home in Beadon to move back to Hertfordshire to be closer to their children. They have always gone the extra mile for all the passengers, taking a personal interest in their wellbeing. Their considerable help and support for our organisation will be greatly missed and I’m sure you will join with me in thanking them for all their care and hard work over the years. We wish them all the best for the future.

20

Lastly, I’ve attached a few pictures from Christmases past which I hope you enjoy.

It just remains for me to wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Happy New year, and safe but no doubt very “different” festivities.

Salcombe Town Council

UPDATE NEWS AND INFORMATION DURING THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

As we move through this year Salcombe Town Council continually looks for ways to support those in this community whilst being aware that everyone is being bombarded with changes every week. During these strange, Covid times, across this parish everyone has come together to try and help each other, and with our beautiful surroundings and wealth of local outlets the wonderful weather through spring into summer meant lots of walking, gardening and enjoying being outdoors talking to people we meet on our way. Now, with autumn moving into winter we will retreat inside our homes and for some they might feel shut away and lonely. So please try to think who might need an over-the-garden-wall chat or phone call, and perhaps it is timely to just let you all know who and what you can turn to. Your Town Council have put an information newsletter together so that if anyone feels that they do not know where to turn, hopefully something within this document will help, or point you in the right direction. It is downloadable in full at http://salcombetowncouncil.gov.uk/featured/2020/update-news-and- information-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak/. There are many websites listed, but we have also tried to provide telephone numbers. Please, if you don’t have access online, do ask me if you would like a paper copy popped through your letterbox. If the details we have provided do not help then you can always phone the Town Council number and we can see what we can come up with to assist – 01548 842282. The Town Council website, www.salcombetowncouncil.gov.uk is where you will also find the names and contacts of each Town Councillor who you can also ring, along with any up-to- date news that we are asked to post on there. If you know of anyone who is elderly or vulnerable and having to self-isolate, and who consequently needs assistance, we will try to find volunteers who can help, although for day -to- day things, the local shops and supermarket deliveries seem to be coping well in this area. Best wishes to all for now and through Christmas to the New Year! Cllr Mrs Nikki Turton, Town (Tel 842847)

Kingsbridge and Saltstone Caring offers a free befriending service to the lonely and isolated of all ages, providing companionship and support to those who need it. Referrals can be made by statutory authorities, however, frequently a referral comes from a concerned neighbour, friend or relative. Sometimes a person refers themselves. What does a referrer do? The referrer completes a referral form. When KASC receive this, they normally contact the potential client and arrange to visit, although this might have to take a different form currently. The visit is to assess the client’s needs in more detail. They do not make a formal charge for their service. However, they do ask for a donation to help with costs if possible. For example, this could be a small contribution towards travelling expenses of volunteers, although of course they accept donations of all sizes. Call 01548 854588 for further information.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER with Kingsbridge and Saltstone Caring? KSCC is busier than ever – phoning clients for a friendly chat, delivering weekly lunches with Kingsbridge Rugby Club and shopping for those unable to get out. Whether you would like to help on an occasional basis or have time for a more regular commitment, they would love to hear from you. For an informal chat give them a ring on 01548 854588.

Malborough with South Huish C of E (VC) Primary School

‘The roots to grow, the wings to fly. All within the love of God

Children from Year 6 have had great fun at the Church after-school club run by Johnny and Becky. They play games, sing songs (socially distanced, of course!), listened to the story of Moses in the bulrushes, before finally making stars and hearts to represent God’s protection. Year One have been harvesting sunflower seeds from the sunflowers that were grown in the school garden. They will share the seeds with all of the other children in the school. We are hoping to plant all of the seeds so that the children can grow their own sunflowers next year. Year Six have been ‘Real Scientists’; they have been learning all about DNA and genetics! They had great fun extracting the DNA from a banana! Class 3 have been learning about the artist Amedeo Modigliani, they have drawn some amazing self-portraits in the style of his work. On Friday 16thOctober we held our fund- raiser for the Macmillan charity. We weren’t able to hold our usual coffee morning event, so we decided to arrange something slightly different! Our school cook baked enough cakes for everyone in the school. The children then had great fun decorating them with sprinkles, chocolate and a multitude of other toppings. This week the children in Classes 1, 2 and 4 have been reading ‘Tinga Tales’, African folk stories about different animals, whilst the children in Class 3 have been reading about the adventures of ‘Paddington Bear’. As part of our themed week our Eco Council decided to fund raise for the WWF. All of the children paid £1 to come to school dressed as an animal. They raised £54 and have decided to adopt a turtle! During lockdown our Forest School shed was broken into and lots of our books and resources were either weather damaged or stolen. The Harbour Book Shop in Kingsbridge very kindly donated a wonderful assortment of new books — thank you so much. Prior to lockdown in March the children painted doves in celebration of Pentecost, and on the back of each dove the children wrote prayers. They are all hung up in church and look wonderful. We held a lovely Remembrance Service in the school play-ground and the children have decorated the school fencing with beautiful poppies and prayers.

Salcombe Harbour

Salcombe Harbour Authority is adjusting its stance in line with recent Government guidance (updated November 1st 2020) in order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. From Thursday 5th November 2020, everyone is advised to stay at home except for specific purposes, which do include allowing exercise outdoors or to visit an outdoor public place.

Having reviewed the related Government documentation, we interpret that, from Thursday 5th November 2020, the Salcombe- can be used for local exercise, or spending time outdoors, where social distancing can be maintained. If you wish to use your vessel, in a manner that complies with current guidance, please ensure you make every attempt to remain safe in order to reduce the chance of you requiring assistance.

The Harbour will be closed to visiting yachts (from sea) as Government guidance is clear that you should avoid travelling in or out of your local area and should remain at your primary residence - the place you live – staying overnight at a second home or travelling for a holiday is not allowed. This also applies to resident vessels cruising elsewhere; local ports will not be expecting arrivals. The harbour office will be closed but our teams will continue to operate remotely - or onsite where work cannot be conducted from home, Monday-Friday. The phone and email will be monitored during normal working hours along with a listening watch on VHF Ch. 14. We will attempt to monitor afloat activity to the best of our ability and may impose further restrictions if the use of the harbour is not in line with Government policy or seen as inappropriate to the national cause. Most local facilities and businesses will be closed as per the guidance. We appreciate your continued support in maintaining safe and efficient port operations.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Redfern Health Centre

Flu vaccine clinics

We would like to remind patients that they are still running flu vaccine clinics. If anyone, who is age 65 or over or in an ‘at risk’ group and has not been immunised yet, they would highly recommend you take this opportunity to be vaccinated.

They are not able to vaccinate patients 50-64 years old yet, who are not in an ‘at risk’ group. They have to await further instructions from the government regarding this cohort of patients and this will depend on the availability nationally of the vaccine.

They are continuing to work in a very safe environment at the health centre, they urge patients to respond to invitations from them for routine reviews and blood tests when notified. It is important for the well-being of their patients that they take up these invitations.

Covid-19 Vaccine

Information is trickling out to Health Centres from central government regarding the plans for administering the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. They will update patients when all plans are in place.

They wish all their patients a Happy Christmas and hope you all stay safe following the government guidelines.

Salcombe WI

With the implementation of lockdown 2 and a high level of uncertainty as to how we will be able to celebrate Christmas this year Salcombe WI has, sadly, cancelled the Christmas lunch. Our planned restart of monthly meetings and ideas of how to hold socially distanced small group outings also remain on hold. We continue to look optimistically to the Spring.

Our meetings are usually held monthly at Salcombe Rugby Club at 2pm for 2.15pm on the third Tuesday of the month. We do not have a definite date for resumption of meetings but, as always, when we do visitors are most welcome. For more information about the work of Salcombe WI, our planned programme of monthly meetings and our varied social calendar please contact our President, Janis Fice, on 01548844560 or email [email protected].

I have recently taken over as secretary following four years of sterling work by Karen Wolstenholme; a hard act to follow. On behalf of the committee and all our members I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

Salcombe & Malborough Flower Club

Our Chairman Sandra and committee would like to wish all members and readers a Very Happy Christmas and Healthy New Year.

What started off as a good year with excellent demonstrators has ended in an unexpected, unprecedented way with the cancellation of our meetings until March 2021. We very much hope by then we can return to our monthly meetings with new vigour.

On a sad note we have said goodbye to Lynda Carter, who left Salcombe at the end of November to move nearer to her children. Lynda will be greatly missed as our Treasurer and as a hard working member of the committee, we wish her and Mike well in their new home. We are delighted that Marion Bell has stepped in as our caretaker Treasurer.

In the mean-time enjoy your flower arranging and decorate your home this Christmas with beautiful flower arrangements.

ALWAYS BEWARE FRAUDSTERS!

South Hams District Council has advised that, unfortunately, there are rogue tree surgeons going around advising homeowners and landowners across the South Hams that works are needed and that they can provide a certificate to say these works are permitted. Do not allow someone who cold calls at your property to carry out works. Only use people who you have contacted directly, or who a family member or friend recommends, because you have decided yourself to have works done.

There are also bogus ‘green waste’ collectors who offer to take your garden waste away and then fly tip it or burn it in fields. Always check who you use are reliable and/or have a certificate to move waste and, if possible, take their vehicle registration number. If you see anything being fly tipped and/or can, try to take a photograph along with details. If you suspect fly tipping or see any fly tipping ring the Environment Agency hotline 0800 807060. ------

National Trust South Hams Centre

Do we see a light at the end of the tunnel? We are keeping in touch with prospective places for our members to visit in 2021. We hope to be able include some places that were in the 2020 programme that proved very popular venues. Depending on how quickly the current Covid restrictions are relaxed it may be possible to arrange one or two talks for the Spring.

Overbeck’s is now closed for the winter but we are told that it plans to reopen the gardens in the Spring. The Countryside team have continued to look after the local National Trust owned land on a care and maintenance basis and are hoping to bring back some of their volunteers soon to resume their programme of improvements.

Have a safe and joyful seasonal holiday and we look forward to seeing many of you again in the New Year.

Best wishes from the SHC committee.

Kingsbridge Foodbank has been working hard in preparation for the second lockdown. Already referrals for new clients are rolling in daily. We are fundraising to be able to keep up with demand, but we also need to think about the future and how we can continue to help our community securely and sustainably. To do this, we need to find permanent premises.

We're starting a campaign to encourage people to make a standing order so we have an assured monthly income. In that way, any additional income we can raise through grants can be invested in securing permanent premises.

Meanwhile, Christmas is not far away and we are preparing gift boxes for children and acquiring gifts for adults. We also want to provide extra meals for children entitled to free school meals during the Christmas holidays so no child goes hungry.

To make a standing order, our bank details are: Account name: Kingsbridge Area Foodbank Account number: 17928860 Sort code:77-09-24

Alternatively cheques can be sent to our address below.

Food donations can be given at and Morrisons collection bins.

New gifts for children and adults for Christmas can be taken to The Avon Centre, Wallingford Road, Kingsbridge - please call beforehand on 07759 683567 to arrange delivery so we can all stay Covid safe!

Thank you for your support. Your generosity will help us to help our community through this crisis. Scarlett

Salcombe Holy Trinity Church also hosts a local foodbank, situated in its entrance foyer, which will remain accessible during this second lockdown. Telephone the administrator for any further information, 01548 842626.

The Adoration of the Shepherds

by Geritt van Battem 1636-1684

In this Adoration scene Battem emphasized the wonder of the shepherds who come to greet the Christ child. Despite the scene’s nocturnal setting, so dark that the cow’s head in the background is barely visible, the divinity of the Christ child shines with an abundant brightness that causes the shepherds to raise their hands in amazement.
