FALLS PREVENTION SHARED LEARNING DAY

Overview

Stepping Forward Together is a community led project that has been visiting community based groups in city over the past year to raise awareness of falls, promote ways for people to self-manage and prevent falls happening in the first place. Stepping Forward Together has developed an ambassador model using co-production approaches, after initial positive feedback the group have received funding from the Health Improvement Fund to test out the development of a sustainable model. The project has been sharing experiences and approaches with ROAR, an older people’s charity, based in Paisley which had a successful ‘Stay active, stay connected’ campaign led by older people.

On 28 August 2019 a group of older citizens and professionals from, ROAR – Connections for Life, Dundee VA, Age Scotland, Stepping Forward Together Aberdeen and Council met to share approaches to active ageing, falls prevention and to discuss and prepare a joint response to the Falls and Fracture Prevention Strategy. The day received great feedback and colleagues across Scotland aim to work together going forward.

LONELINESS AND SOCIAL INCLUSION CONFERENCE

The Wellbeing and Welfare Network is a collaboration between statutory and third sector partners working in the sphere of welfare and well-being. With over 60 groups taking part in the network we have a good overview of welfare and well- being in South Aberdeenshire. Isolation and loneliness has been much discussed of late, and we would like to focus on this as a network in the medium to long term. The network are to host a conference on Loneliness and Social Isolation on 3rd October 2019 in Portlethen Campus.

We are fortunate to have Kiren Zubairi, Voluntary Health Scotland, author of the Zubairi Report on Loneliness and Social Isolation coming along to share her findings from the report. This qualitative study investigates the loneliness and social isolation experienced by under-represented demographics in Scotland, who often face multiple triggers including socio-economic disadvantage, poor access to transport and a lack of places and spaces that encourage connectedness and foster belonging. The primary research was conducted with women from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, people living in a socio- economically deprived area, people living and working in rural communities, and paid and unpaid carers of people receiving palliative care. Kiren will provide a national overview of the development of the Scottish Government’s strategy and what actions at a local and national level can lead to long term positive change.

PUBLIC HEALTH NETWORKING EVENT 25th SEPTEMBER 2019

This year’s annual Public Health Networking Event was held on 25th September 2019 and it was great to see if grow even larger this year. We included our local authority colleagues in the planning group and invitations, and had over 20 local authority staff there on the day. Many of them helped facilitate a session on various council services, including housing, licensing and planning – this allowed health staff to find out much more about their local authority counterparts, hopefully identifying more opportunities to work together. As part of the programme, we also had ten different community projects from across Grampian represented to tell us more about the fantastic work they do. We even all had a sing song, led by the enthusiastic Seaton Sings project!

To help us capture the themes and ethos of the day, we had two graphic designers from NHS Education for Scotland at the event producing a piece of artwork throughout the day made up of what they heard and conversations with staff. A picture of the final piece is below and it is currently up on the wall in Summerfield House, beside room F160 – come and have a look for yourself! There will be a highlights video from the event as well so we will share that when available. Our next event is the Christmas Coffee Morning, which will be on Wednesday 11th December so keep your eyes peeled for more details…
