Carthage welcomesformer governor,congressman Events featureMaine’s John Baldacci on political, economic, educational topics KENOSHA, Wis. – Featuring special guest John E. Baldacci, a former Maine governor and U.S. congressman, Carthage College will hold three public events from Oct. -­‐ 2 4. Admission is free to all three events, which will be held in the Center at Carthage, 2001 Alford Park Drive. • Oct. 2: Presentation – ‘On Civility in Politics’ | 7-­‐8:30 p.m. A strong proponent of bipartisan government, Baldacci will lay out the case for civility in an era of increasing polarization. Afterward, refreshments will be served at a public reception. • Oct. 3: Presentation – ‘Unorthodox: A Conversation About Life, Politics, and the Road Not Taken’ | 6-­‐7:30 p.m. The public is invited to join students from Carthage, Gateway Technical College, and the University of -­‐Parkside for Baldacci’s dinner presentation about the mutual value of higher education and career development.Advance registration is required. • Oct. 4: Panel Discussion – Economic Development in Southeast Wisconsin | 7 p.m. Baldacci willjoin Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian, Carthage President John Swallow, and Racine County Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Jenny Trick on this panel, facilitated by Carthage faculty member Gregory Barron. Afterward, refreshments will be served at a public reception. After representing Maine for four terms in Congress, Baldacci served as the state’s governor from 2003 to 2011. He overhauled the state’s health care and technical college systems, created economic development zones, streamlined government services, promoted alternative energy sources, and expanded civil rights laws. Today, Baldacci works a senior advisor for economic development and government relations at Pierce Atwood LLP, a law firm in Portland, Maine. He comes to Carthage through the Sam and Gene Johnson Endowed Distinguished Visiting Professorship and the Council of Independent Colleges’ Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows program.
