Page 13 President’s Report

The 2013-14 season was another successful season for the Queanbeyan District Cricket Club. 4 out of 5 teams made the end of season semi-finals, premierships for our 2nd grade T20 side, our 1st and 3rd grade 1 day teams and a 5th grade premiership confirm that our club is strong both on and off the field.

On the field, our captains and teams have done a mighty job. To Jenno and his team, congratulations on a thoroughly deserved premiership victory.

Full credit also goes to Blake Dean, Adrian Brunker, Dave Horsfall, Michael Frost and Matty Harding for the way they have led their teams and the never say die attitude they displayed at all times during the season. Full marks to Blake and Adrian in particular for the way their teams fought out the grand finals. I believe we have an environment where our young players can learn and improve their cricketing skills and this is supported by Vele Dukoski being announced as the Futures League Player of the Year. A great honour for Vele and one that our club should be proud of and the role we have played in his development.

Our cricket pavilion is now 2 years old and we should reflect how lucky we are to have that facility. One of the highlights for me this season was the way we were able to stage two games of on Freebody 1 and 2 and at the same time host the visiting NSW U/15 squad and their parents for a national carnival training session. The feedback from all was incredibly positive and a fantastic reflection on our local cricketing community and our City.

Our relationship with the Queanbeyan City Council continues to grow from strength to strength. The irrigation work completed on the two grounds along with the Freebody 1 square renovation will have long lasting benefits for our Club. Our committees aim is to maintain and improve our facilities to make Queanbeyan the best place possible to play cricket.

Thank you to all of our sponsors this season. We could not function in the way we have now for a number of years without their support. In particular, I would like to thank our major sponsors the Kangaroos Club. Our sincere thanks go to President, Michael Carruthers, Secretary Manager, Leigh Kiely and the Club’s Board for the continued support. Thanks you also to Paul Kelly from Sportslink International and the guys at ARIS. I encourage everyone to get behind and support our sponsors whenever possible.

I would like to acknowledge our Committee for the work they have done in making Queanbeyan a great place to play cricket. Thank you to our Patron Ian McNamee, Vice Presidents Stephen Cross and David Ayre, Secretary Ron Bates, Treasurer Matty Harding and our general committee of Adrian Brunker, Peter Coleborne, Dave Corcoran, Rohan Ditton, Gordon Elliott, John Fern, Stephen Frost, John Izzard, Peter Jensen, Sarah McGlashan, Graeme McLennan and Darren Southwell.

We are always looking for greater contributions from our members and support base so I urge anyone who has some spare time (and you do not have to be on the committee) to be passionate about your club… jump in and help out. We are always looking for support.

Our Club is also extremely fortunate to have the support of mums and dads and wives and girlfriends. We can’t operate the way we do without your support. I know it’s fraught with danger but I’d like to acknowledge a couple. To Ratsny and Derren we can’t thank you enough. The lunches that Ratsny prepares for 1st grade are the envy of the competition and

Page 14 I’m sure opposing clubs now love coming out to Queanbeyan to play just for the lunchtime feast alone.

Finally, big thank you to my wife, Julie, for her help throughout the season at the clubhouse and for her support of my role within our Club.

Peter Solway President

2013-14 saw the club extended the purple patch it is enjoying by another season. With the return to the fold of Blake Dean from his brief stint with Tuggeranong, Dean Solway from as well as Michael Curtale being fully recovered from his hand injury, 1st grade had a better all-round look about it. Adding to this Vinesh Bennett coming over from Tuggeranong and the continued improvement of young guns Alex Page, Guy Gillespie and Matt Grocott. The team won the Gallop Cup, were runner’s up in the Douglas Cup and semi- finalist in the SCG Country Cup and the Konica Cup.

2nd grade had another good season, making the semis of all three competitions and going on to win the Division 2 – T20 cup. 3rd grade successfully defended their title in the One-day competition and made the semis of the Two-day competition. 4th grade found it hard to gather any momentum due to a number of factors and finished out of the running. 5th grade had another successful season replicating their efforts from 2010-11 in finishing both Minor Premiers and Premiers.

Individual performance wise, it was another bumper year with batsmen reeling off plenty of runs and bowlers bagging heaps of . We had 8 centuries (as well as players getting into the nervous 90’s on five occasions), one player taking 10 wickets in a match and 8 times bowlers took 5 wickets in an innings.

Congratulations to Vele Dukoski, who capped off another great season by being named the Toyota Future League’s Player of the Year. At the Cricket ACT High Performance Awards night, Vele was awarded the Peter Solway medal for his performances with the Comets. Congrats to Vinesh for being awarded the Floros Medal (Indoor Cricket) as well as being named ACT Rockets Batsman of the Year and Bowler of the Year. Congrats also go to Blake Dean who was named as captain of the CACT Grade Team of the Year.

Congratulations go to the following players for achieving personal milestones this season.

Page 16 This season also saw the club, with the assistance of CACT and the council, undertake a major refurbishment of the Freebody 1 and though it was off-line for half of the season, it will be well worth it in seasons to come. The committee will be hoping, with council support to undertake similar work on both Freebody 2 and Town Park over the next few years.

Off Field

Congratulations go to Peter Coleborne and Alana Doyle who got married in February. I would also like to congratulate Blake Dean on his engagement to Alyce Gainsford. In addition, congratulations go to Peta and Matt Harding who are expecting their first child, which is due around July this year.

As part of our ongoing sponsorship by Baker, Deane and Nutt, we again participated in the Annual Red Shield Appeal. Unfortunately, due to a lack of numbers as well as some other factors we only managed to collect just under $500 this year. The club would like to thank those involved for their efforts – Steve Cross, Darren Southwell, Peter Solway, Dean Solway and Derren & Ratsny Gillespie.

Besides those acknowledge on the Supporters and Sponsors page, I would like to acknowledge the financial or other support provided by the following business as well:

Frank Wilson’s Solicitors and Andrew Deane Insurance

I would also like to acknowledge and to thank the work that Andrew Johnston and Josh Matic (Queanbeyan Age) do during the season. This effort ensures that the club is kept at the forefront of sports news each week.

Also helping keep the club in the public domain, I would also like to thank Pete ‘Nook’ Newham for allowing me to present the Bluebags Review as part of his weekly sports show on Queanbeyan 96.7 FM every Friday evening.

Tubbsy and Chow-dog dressed for success

Page 17 The Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation Night was again a great night and congratulations go to all the award recipients. I would like to thank Josh "Chow-Dog" Sands and Sam "Tubbsy" Taylor for taking on the role of Master of Ceremonies.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the organising committee of Rohan Ditton, Stephen Cross, Sarah McGlashan and Michael Frost. Thanks to all involved.

The club’s Annual Golf Day was another success, even though numbers were a bit down this year.

It was great weather and truly enjoyed by all those who took part. Thanks to all those who helped on the day..

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the ongoing support that is provided to the club from the staff of Queanbeyan City Council. It is great to know that they are always ready to provide assistance whenever it was required.

The Future

Time does not stand still and therefore neither should we.

For next season and beyond the club will be investing in a new playing and training strip. The committee has already sourced a supplier and are in the process of coming up with a design.

We also need to continue to build on the good relationship with the junior club and ensure that we are the club of choice for the players coming from the junior's ranks. We also need to keep a good relationship other regional areas such as Goulburn.

Whilst the club had a strong contingent of batsmen, bowlers and all-rounders emerging through the lower grades the same cannot be said about wicket keepers. We do have some handy glove-men in the lower grades and time will tell whether these youngsters will have the right stuff to become a future custodian of the gloves in first grade.

Financially: The future is very unclear and the club needs to be a bit more aggressive in securing sponsors and supporters. A few years ago, the committee made a very conscientious decision to keep our fees as low as possible. However, without the support of the corporate sector this may not be possible in the future. I believe that everyone in the club can contribute to this in a non-financial manner, by either recommending a potential sponsor/supporter or more importantly supporting our current and future sponsors where possible.

Our Pavilion: There is a lot of potential in regards to generating revenue at the pavilion and we need to act on this. Last season we held a number of very successful events, such as our NRL Grand Final Day and the club's annual Quiz night to name but a couple. From next season and beyond, we need to have more of these types of social functions, however we also

Page 18 need more people involved by volunteering to assist run these functions. We cannot keep relying on the same people putting up their hands to help time and time again. One other aspect is that we also need to create a family friendly atmosphere at the pavilion, were we can encourage players and their families to come back after each day's play.

Page 19 Treasurer’s Report

This season saw the club post its first operating loss in seven seasons of $965, however the club still remains in a financially strong position. The result was partly due to an increase of ground hire fees to Cricket ACT while the upgrade to the Freebody 1 pitches and drainage was undertaken, which meant the club only had two home venues until after the Christmas break.

Additionally with Freebody 1 being unavailable for the first half of the season meant the club was unable to bid to host any Cricket ACT representative matches, which, in previous seasons, has provided a good stream of income.

The club held two major fundraising events during the season - the Trivia Night in November and the annual Golf Day before Easter. We had good attendance at both events and provided they are promoted and managed well, this trend is sure to continue in future seasons.

The 2013-14 season also marked the first full operating season for our drinks fridge, which turned a tidy profit despite some shortfalls over certain weekends. Unfortunately, the club experienced its first break-in over the summer and as well as a small amount of cash, a quantity of fridge stock was stolen or destroyed.

The club's Balance Sheet at 31 May 2014 reflects a strong position, which will allow the management committee the opportunity to invest further in playing and ground equipment for future seasons.

Coaches Report

QDCC enjoyed another successful season in 2013/14. The off-season was productive as we were able to secure Blake Dean as captain/coach. Dean Solway returned to the club after a season in Adelaide and the club secured the services of Comets opening bowler Josh Bennett. Vinesh Bennett arrived from Tuggeranong and Michael Curtale returned after having a season off due to a hand injury.

First Grade re-claimed the Gallop Cup. Given the number of star players in its ranks, First's also had a reasonable season. Second grade claimed the T20 final for the second season in a row. Fifth Grade was rewarded for their dominant season by claiming the premiership. Third grade successfully defended their one-day title by defeating Creek in a rain-affected match.

Training improved dramatically this season. Blake should be commended for the professionalism he brought to Thursday training sessions. Blake was ably assisted by many over the season, organised well-structured and varied training sessions. Vele Dukoski and Dean Solway developed as leaders as the season progressed and the younger players really enjoyed being led by these young Comets players.

Player development also took a step forward this season. Alex Page, Mark Solway and Guy Gillespie are all players for the future and cemented positions in first grade. Promising all- rounder Matthew Grocott made his debut in first grade this season and will be looking to lock in his position in 2014/15.

The partnership with St. Edmunds College cricket went to a new level in 2013/14 with the club welcoming a number of former students into our ranks. I hope to see this partnership continue to grow over the coming years. Zac Pagan is arguably the most talented youngster playing lower grades hopefully he will take the next step in 2014/15. Our Club stalwarts did another excellent job providing quality leadership in the lower grades, particularly Matt Harding, captaining for the first time.

With player turnover and recruitment appearing to be the hottest topic this off-season, I am sure the club will be starting a new chapter in 2014/15. Thank you to those players who have served the Club well over previous seasons and we hope to see you back at the Bluebags in the near future.

First grade was looking was looking set for a successful 13/14 season with a young improving squad combined with the return of some familiar faces being Blake Dean, Michael Curtale and of course myself. The club also acquired the services of Newcastle fast bowler Josh Bennett. These inclusions assisted the club in filling the large gap that was left in the side with previous captain Aaron Ayre moving to the Victorian state system in a bid to start his professional career.

The team made a solid start to the season winning all of their October matches and the top 6 also putting their soccer skills on display winning 5 from 5 of the routine warm up matches. Outstanding individual performances in the early part of the season were Jono Dean’s 234* against Weston Creek, Mark Solway’s first 5 wicket haul against Ginninderra, and Blake Dean’s 100 against Weston Creek.

After a few losses in December, the team managed to get through to the SCG Cup finals in Shellharbour. Following a good win in the quarter final against Dubbo the side went down to eventual winners Hamilton-Wickham in a close match. The weekend in Shellharbour was an enjoyable one for all who went and the boys are striving to go two steps further next year.

Despite some poor form in January, the team scraped into the One day and T20 finals. The side had a disappointing loss to an ineligible Albury team in the T20 semi, but managed to turn their fortunes around and claim the One day premiership in a nail biter against Tuggeranong. Despite being dismissed for a well below par 136, Queanbeyan showed some true bluebag grit and bowled Tuggeranong out 6 runs short of the total.

Page 34 Queanbeyan also went on to win the two day minor premiership and their first final against ANU thanks to some outstanding performances by Vele Dukoski 127 and Blake Dean 35* to save the game. The team then had a disappointing loss at Manuka in the final. The result was decided on first innings runs with a large portion of the match being washed out and a very bowler friendly wicket.

On behalf of all First grade players, I would like to say a big thank you to all of the committee members and volunteers who enable the club to operate each week. Also, a special thanks to Dawesy for his hard work on the wickets and to Ratsny for her wonderful lunches each week - they would easily be the best in Australian Club Cricket!

Next season is an exciting proposition with a new look squad and opportunities for younger players at the club. If our young group of players continues to work hard and improve, we will be set for another successful season.

Season 2013/14 was another successful one for 2nd grade despite only claiming one major trophy being the Div 2 T20 title for the second consecutive year.

It was always going to be an ambitious target of bettering last season's efforts of winning the Campbell Cup (two-day premiership) and the T/20 title as well as runners-up in the one-day competition. With the bulk of last season's squad and some new young talent, we strived to do what has so far eluded any team by winning the 2nd grade "treble".

It was a strong effort by all but in the end, the lack of consistency in all aspects of the game especially at crucial times, cost the side in both the semi final of the one-day competition and the two-day semi. I think from a team perspective the highlight has to be winning the T20 title at the redeveloped in what was a very dominant display, which only goes to show the capability of the squad. Both Matt Grocott and Josh Gregory showed the way with both having an excellent match.

I however think the most memorable highlight of our season was the way in which the team responded in the two-day semi final. Having lost the toss, we were sent in to bat on what could only be described as a sticky wicket (despite a week of hot sunny weather – go figure). We were bowled out for 152, thanks mainly to Lakshmn's gritty innings of 52. The wicket had now dried out and was a road and North's then posted 356, a 200 run lead and out backs well truly up against the wall. This is where the character and never say die attitude of the bluebags came to the fore. We made 340 in the second innings, with well-compiled half centuries from Jeremy Macdonald, Matt Grocott and Josh Sands with great support from all the other

Page 36 batsmen. In the end we were about 50 short as North's passed the total well and truly leaking oil 6 down.

I don’t think too many other teams would have knuckled down and made a game of what seemed an impossible situation the way the team did and it’s a credit to each individual and also the culture that exists within the club that not only did we make a game of it but nearly pulled it off. Things may well have been different if a few doubtful umpiring decisions had gone our way.

A couple of special mentions:  Darren Southwell whose tireless effort across the season in again capturing over 50 wickets and was unlucky not to receive the Lorne Lees medal for 2nd grade player of the year.  Pete Coleborne for being the leading run scorer despite playing just over half a season. Pete also made the only hundred for 2’s in a dominant display against ANU at Grammar early in the season.  Matt Grocott also for announcing his arrival as a senior cricketer and a deserved captain's award winner for a great season culminating in his selection in 1st grade for the Two-day final at Manuka. Matt has served an extended apprenticeship in 2nd grade and it was fantastic to see him take his all round game up another level to force his way into first grade. I look forward to watching his progress at that level in the coming years.  Last but not least, Josh Sands, for providing one of the most entertaining moments of the season. Sandsy was charging towards an aggressive 100 at Chisholm until cramp set in and he ended up being carried off the ground about 20 short. Unknown to everybody else he spent the next couple of hours curled up in the foetal position in the sheds until a Tuggeranong player had to call someone to come and pick him up. All in all most clubs would have been satisfied with a season like this, however there is a lot of desire to improve these results from within the team and I know we will be striving hard for that in 2014/15.

I will always look back on 3rd grades 2013/14 season with fond memories. This was only my second year with club and the first full season as a player. It was a privilege to be asked to captain the Two-day side and every weekend I always looked forward to the cricket. All I wanted, was to be out in the middle and did I get dirty with the world if the weather was bad!

The highlight of the year for 3rd grade was winning the One-day competition. In a hard fought final against Creek, on a day where the weather was better suited for footy, all the lads stood tall and it was a fantastic team victory. In my mind, Jacob Knowles was the standout performer on the day. His effort with the ball taking 3/18, as well as snaring 3 catches, really inspired the lads and went a long way in defending our modest batting total – well done Knowles'y! I would also like to congratulate One-day skipper Michael Frost on this achievement. His leadership on the day and during the rest of the season proper was fantastic – thanks MF!

The Two-day side had a very good blend of experienced campaigners, younger up and comers and past players coming back to the game. We were extremely fortunate to have the playing services of club president Peter Solway and committee member Rohan Ditton. Their experience and support both on and off the park was invaluable and their contributions were greatly appreciated.

Of the younger brigade, players such as George Cross, Dave Kusetic, Jordan Brown, Anjuka Jayasooria and Lewis McLennan all had very good seasons and should be proud of their efforts. Zac Pagan with over 500 runs for the season was the standout performer with the bat and I would like to make special mention of Michael Hosking. Unfortunately, his season was cut short with injury but he as well as the others named above, showed positive signs that they will develop into strong QDCC players.

Page 39

It was also outstanding to have the services of players Mick Elliot, Kaden Watts, Marty Frost and Ben Forbes. Having all returned to the game this season, I hope you enjoyed the season and like myself look forward to the banter and team-mate sledging that will surely be there again next season. Thanks for all your efforts lads!

Adrian Brunker, as Chairman of Selectors and Greg Dawes as Curator, are two blokes that cannot go without mention. Brunks, the challenges you faced on a weekly basis fielding 5 teams and the work you put into this area was unreal. The success QDCC enjoyed across the grades this season is testament to all your hard work, congratulations! Dawes'y, all your efforts on all the clubs grounds week after week did not go unnoticed. QDCC facilities / playing surfaces are the best in the region and were a pleasure to play on, thank you mate!

Finally, I believe finishing third at the end of the regular season, making semis, was a fair return for our efforts over the course of the Two-day competition. Weather cruelled our chances in two games leading into finals and we can count ourselves unlucky for not finishing within the top two. The team blend and formula worked well and on our day, we were one of the strongest 3rd grades sides in the competition.

Thank you once again to everyone who contributed to 3rd Grade throughout the season.

Page 40 Fourth Grade Report

The 2013/14 season was my first as captain with the Bluebags and saw fourth grade play all home games at Town Park due to Freebody 1 being unavailable. The season saw the debut of some new young talent to the club’s ranks in Aiden Bowyer and Lachlan Squire, and the continuing development of our other young players in Tyler Van Luin, Finley Hollyhead, Will Graham, Wilson Morshead, Brad Moore, Josh Swan and Matt McBride.

A big thanks to our experienced players in Steve Cross, Colin Crouch, Graeme Alexander, Simon Johnson and our fill in Steve Moore for your assistance during the season setting fields, talking to bowlers and batsman as well as umpiring when needed.

We finished the One Day competition with four wins from our seven games with our best two weekends coming before Christmas with wins over Western Creek and Tuggeranong (with 2 bonus points) on the double header weekend and Eastlake (with 2 bonus points).

Unfortunately our form after Christmas saw us finish with losses to West's and North's but it was enough to finish in 3rd spot earning ourselves a Semi Final game against West's. After losing another toss, we had a promising start with the ball and had them 4/32, 5/77 and 6/97 but let a couple of chances go down to eventually leave us chasing 232. Unfortunately we also lost early wickets to be 6/72, before Tyler Van Luin (46) and Brad Moore (35) added some respectability to the score to see us eventually bowled out for 156 in reply.

The Two-Day competition was not so friendly to us with us starting with two 1st innings losses and an outright loss before Christmas, but finished with a tie against Tuggeranong. Add to this three draws all thanks to mother nature, which was a shame as we had the upper hand in all three matches and were showing some promising signs to finish the season on a high.

The fourth grade awards:  Captain’s Award – Will Graham 101 (HS – 39) and 18 wickets (BB 4/18)  Bowling – Simon Johnson 20 wickets (BB – 6/65)  Batting – Matt Harding 384 runs (HS – 117no)

I also need to thank the efforts of Adrian Brunker with the selections each week to ensure we had players in all grades, Greg Dawes, Ron McGlashan and Mark Solway for their preparation of Town Park and all the other players who played in fourth grade this season before moving up the grades or filling in when required.

Last but not least a really big thanks to my wife Peta for scoring and keeping the crèche in order whilst we were batting.

Fifth grade again had a very dominant season and we finished the home and away season (losing only one game for the year) as Minor Premiers. We then followed this up with probably the best win of the season in the semi-final against a West’s team dominated by 4th grade players with only a couple of regular 5th graders in their side.

In the week leading up to the decider, the lads were brimming with confidence. It was disappointing to see the rain falling almost continuously from Wednesday onwards. As a result of the wet weather, the match was washed out. This was not an ideal way to win a Premiership but we cannot control the weather and as the top side, it gave us just reward for our season’s effort.

This season we had a number of younger guys come into the team, which made a massive difference. Jacob Gisik, Zac Arton, Zac Jerrim and Jacob Gillespie (back after a year off) gave the team a good balance of youth (and young legs) and experience and they all did their bit with not only bat or ball but also in the field. These guys threw themselves around the ground, chased everything down, and were very important to the success of the side this year. Another good inclusion was Micah Manners who acquitted himself very well in all facets of the game.

Then we had our regulars, Jim Martin, Ronnie McGlashan, John Fern, Chris Howe, Doyley, Bipin, Troy Drayton and Vice-captain Aaron Thorn – all these guys were valuable contributors throughout the season and a Premiership was well deserved by everyone involved in the Cricket Club.

Page 43 I hope that everyone will front up next season to try to defend our title – interestingly enough we have been in the last four Grand Finals with the ledger being 2 wins and 2 losses so enjoying a win no matter how we got was in the end very sweet.
