President’s Report

I begin my report by noting that it has been a particularly productive year for the Queanbeyan District Cricket Club, which has been the leading club in the ACT Cricket Association for the past 90 years.

The financial situation for the club has had a complete turn around from a significant deficiency to now having funds in an interest bearing deposit as a provision for future development and unexpected costs. Our thanks go to the club‟s Treasurer Gordon Elliott for his diligence in overseeing our accounts.

However, we cannot sit back on our laurels especially with the current economic crisis the country is experiencing. We will need to work even harder next season as it is inevitable that our costs are going to increase and we will need to review our current fee structure as well as secure addition financial support from the business community in way of sponsorships to „make ends meet‟. The club also needs to build on its community involvement next season as again I am sure we will be called upon again to assist in the various worthwhile causes such as Red Shield Appeal and the Starlight Foundation Appeal.

Over the past 12 months, the club was well served with Ron Bates as our Secretary who was available at all times to lead from the front with the administration of club affairs. Thanks also to Vice Presidents. Peter Solway being the rock on which the future of the Queanbeyan Cricket Club proceeds and Peter Baker for his leadership as well as the mentoring of the ladies team, that subsequently qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in many years.

Our club was again well represented on the Grade Cricket Committee by Dean Mansfield. Wholehearted efforts were received from Graeme McLennan, Peter Coleborne and Ian Hamill not to forget Michael Frost who was there to provide assistance whenever needed. We also must recognise the great work from James Buckley as our Publicity Officer and it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the fine efforts of Greg Dawes for the preparation of the at Freebody 1 & 2 under the tutelage of Rohan Ditton, and also Ron McGlashan for the good work he has done at Town Park.

On the field we had some mixed results with the best male player Jono Dean and best ladies player Em Preston, receiving their awards at the annual presentation dinner. First grade under the leadership of Mark Higgs won the competition however the highlight for the club was winning the 4th grade Premiership which showed another culture of our club represented by the „granddads and grand kids‟ featuring 4 local juniors. It is worth noting that Colin Crouch was a member of this team and was also a member of the 1990/91 1st grade premiership team.

I must also mention here the leadership of Paul Morshead of the junior club. The Junior baggers excelled in the season just gone, none more so that in the under 11 and 13 divisions, so the future looks good with so many promising youngsters just waiting in the wings.

At last years AGM the club bestowed Life Membership upon Peter Solway, Michael Frost & Stephen Cross and all three were presented with a plaque formally acknowledging this, at our recent Annual Dinner and Presentation night.

Page 7

Another pivotal moment for the club came in March, when the Queanbeyan City Council approved the construction of a Pavilion at Freebody 2 which will serve as a long overdue club house to be shared by both the Senior and Junior teams once completed. It is in my opinion that it will not only be a feature offering better amenities it will also attract a more participation by mums and dads, wives, girlfriends and boyfriends. We start the 2009/2010 season with nothing but optimism to look forward to a successful year both on and off the field.

Secretary’s Report

I would like to begin my report with a huge thanks to my predecessor, Stephen Cross, whose years of hard work as Secretary provided me with not only an easy transition into the job, but also a milestone by which I could measure how I felt I performed in my first year. Crossy‟s contributions, both on and off the field, were duly recognised at last years AGM by being bestowed with Life Membership.

I would also like to thank everyone on the committee, especially Ian McNamee, who provided me with support and guidance and made my job that much easier.

On-Field Firstly congratulations to Higgsy and the boys in winning the 1st grade Twenty20 Pre-season Cup and in the process securing the clubs first 1st grade trophy for many seasons. 1st grade also performed well in the Konica and SCG cups, despite being hampered at times by having to field an almost second XI team. In regards to the premiership the team again qualified for the semis for the third year running, but came up against an inform Cade Brown, who almost single handily won the game for Creek.

Next I would like to congratulate the Women‟s team for qualifying for the semis. The girls played exceptionally well all year considering that the average age of the team is about 16. In the semi, they lost to a red hot Tuggeranong side, but showed that they will be a force to contend with in the not too distant future. A big thanks goes to Peter Baker, whose guidance surely played no small part in their good performances throughout the season. It was great to see that so many of those who made up the women‟s team also went on to represented the ACT in the various age divisions.

Finally I must congratulate Ditts and his valiant 4th grade team, who gave the club its second 4th grade Premiership in 3 seasons. The team was almost a perfect blend of youth and experience. In the matches I went along to watch during the season, it was great to see the camaraderie that had developed within the team and how the senior players such as long time club stalwarts Jim Martin and Colin Crouch, provided encouragement and support to the youngsters like Mick Elliott, Jezza McDonald, Michael Medved and Stevie Harris.

On the down side one of the biggest hurdles the club had to face this year was the number of quality players who were unavailable every week. I don‟t know if it is a sign of the times or not but from an administrative point of view it‟s a very unsatisfactory situation. In the end, I guess the results showed it with 2 teams finishing at the bottom of the table and the club finishing well down on the Club Championship table. I would also like to mention that without the huge influx of juniors to the senior ranks this season we would have struggled to field 3 teams each week. This is something that our club will need to deal with if we are again to become the powerhouse of ACT Cricket. However, on the flip side, it was great to see so many talented juniors playing in the top grades this season. My crystal ball predicts that in the not too distant future, the club will win the 1st Grade Premiership with possibly the youngest team ever in the history of ACT Cricket.

Page 9

Off-Field The big news from the season is the long awaited approval from Council to go ahead with the construction of a pavilion, which will serve as our clubhouse, at Freebody Park. Thanks mainly to the tireless efforts of Ian McNamee. However the approval is just the beginning of the project with a lot of hours of hard work and lots of cajoling of all levels of government, various sporting bodies and the business community required to secure funds to get the building constructed.

The club administratively and financially is going from strength to strength. We now have a healthy bank balance, which will help the club through the next few years of financial uncertainty in the corporate sector.

This year the club welcomed onto the committee Graeme McLennan, who brought with him a wealth of business acumen as well as some great connections in the business community.

Serving a 2nd term as Honorary Treasurer, Gordon again proved that he would no doubt be the best treasurer in the district. It‟s certainly an asset to know exactly where we are financially and that his budgetary skills are exemplary.

Peter Solway, aka Mr Cricket. What more can you say about the legend. Not only was he elected as one of our Vice-Presidents this year, he also took on the role of Junior Delegate and was always available to assist Dawesy and Frostie in team selections. I must add he has also provided the club with a couple of handy cricketers in sons Dean and Mark. His services to the club were duly recognised at last years AGM, by also being bestowed with Life Membership.

Greg Dawes again proved to be a tireless worker, not only preparing some of the best wickets (in league with his partner in crime, Rohan Ditton) that have been seen at Freebody for many years.

Dean Mansfield again took on the role of our Grade Cricket Committee representative and was always available to assist in any way he could. Dean, with the assistance of Peter Coleborne also took over the duties of Webmaster and did a wonderful job on redesigning our homepage.

James Buckley skills as a journalist continue to improve and as Publicity Officer his weekly reporting of the club for the Queanbeyan Age kept our profile high in the community.

Peter Baker, despite heavy work commitments this past year, was still able to be there to lend a hand when needed and his experience was invaluable in fulfilling his role as Vice President.

Peter Coleborne provided a player‟s perspective at committee meetings also took on the role of pre-season fitness coach and provided valuable guidance at training each week.

Ian Hamill was also on the Management Committee and whose experience again proved invaluable and was instrumental in introducing Toyota to the club as a new sponsor.

I would also like to mention Michael Frost. Whilst Frostie was not on the Management Committee this year, he volunteered to take on the role of Coaching Coordinator. He also took time to attend most committee meetings. With his wealth of experience he was always available to provide guidance to the committee when required. Frostie joined Crossy and Solid by also being bestowed with Life Membership this year.

Page 10

I would also like to acknowledge the financial support of our sponsors including the Queanbeyan Kangaroos Football Club, ActewAGL, Baker Deanne & Nutt, Canberra Toyota, Canberra Investment Corporation, Peter Jensen‟s Sportsbiz, Riverside Plaza, Sportsman‟s Warehouse and Woden Contractors.

This season also saw the introduction of the 1st Grade Player Sponsorship arrangement, an initiative from Peter Solway and Graeme McLennan, which saw the following Businesses come on board as player sponsors.

 Lindbeck's Butchery  Intelligent Alarms and Monitoring Services  Fosters  NAB  The Climate Doctor  Andrew Deane Insurance  J & J Interiors  Frank Wilson Solicitor  Peter Coleborne Watersafe Swimming Tuition  Spaseski & Assoc Pty Ltd  Capital Terrace Auto Repairs

I mustn‟t forget to acknowledge the support that is provided to the club from the staff from Queanbeyan City Council, who are always ready to provide assistance whenever we required it.

Finally, to the wives, partners, girlfriends and families of all the committee members who, not only assisted with the various functions and tasks, but just as important, provided their understanding, generosity and support to their respective partners, which is duly acknowledged and sincerely appreciated.

The Future The future is looking good thanks to the hard work done by the Management Committee over the past few seasons combined with the quality of juniors now playing in the senior ranks.

Treasurer’s Report

The Club continued its strong financial performance into 2008-09 recording an operating profit of $14,105. The result reflected continued strong support from the local business community including from the major sponsor The Queanbeyan Kangaroos Rugby Leagues Club. Other major supporters were ActewAGL, The Sportsman's Warehouse, Baker Deane & Nutt and the Queanbeyan City Council who delivered 3 high quality and well maintained cricket grounds throughout the season. The Club's Management Committee also launched a successful " Players Sponsorship Program" where the Club's first grade team members were supported by local businesses. The Club also benefited from preparing pitches for use by Cricket ACT for several representative matches.

The Club‟s Management Committee maintained operating expenses at similar levels to the previous season, which was a result of careful forward planning and effective budget management. This was an excellent result in light of the prevailing challenging economic conditions.

The Club's Balance Sheet at 31 May 2009 reflects a strong cash position which the General Committee has been committed to accumulating over the past 2 seasons and has given the Club the opportunity to invest in much needed new playing and pitch preparation equipment for the 2009-10 and future seasons.

Coaching Coordinator’s Report

From a coaching and selection perspective, 2008-2009 was a very indifferent season. The year started full of promise and promises, yet at the end of the year the 4th Grade Two-Day trophy and the 1st Grade Twenty20 trophy are all that filled the cupboard. Some would say disappointing; others might look back and add the year to the „development era‟. Either way, 2009-2010 presents both a challenge and an opportunity.

The past year certainly provided many highlights and there are also volunteers who turned up week in and week out. Peter Coleborne, Greg Dawes and Peter Solway all made valuable contributions to the coaching and selections every week. PC was instrumental in developing a pre-season program and hopefully he will do similar again next year – we need it and Solid was always there to lend a hand with drills and advice. We need to encourage both the „Peters‟ to be as dedicated next year. If they do and we can mix in Jono Dean, Mark Higgs, Lea Hansen and a few assistants we will be a long way toward real success across the grades.

As in the past Dawesy was a pivotal person at selection time. He would listen to the Skippers, advise the young blokes and was when necessary prepared to wear the criticism. All part of the job he would say. His job was not made any easier with an average of 14 players unavailable each week. These ranged from 1sts to 5ths with Birthdays, Sore Toes, Buck‟s Parties, Distant Cousins Weddings, People you don‟t know Weddings, Tired, Wrestling, Races and all sorts of excuses. This is an area we need to improve. Cricket is a six month gig. All players need to tell Mum and Dad, their Mrs, their boyfriend etc that from Oct-Mar – every Saturday, Saturday night and most Sundays are „CRICKET‟ days.

As stated a new challenge this year – we are a top 4 side in almost all grades. The next level is the hardest jump and it takes the whole club to win premierships. With our new facilities almost in sight and a new, very large, trophy cabinet being built, it is time to start filling it up.

1st Grade Report

The 2008-2009 season was again a tough one for the bluebags. As with the last three years we managed to make it to the semis in the Premiership, only to be once again knocked out in the first week. We did manage to bring home some silverware in the form of the Twenty20 competition.

The season started well for us. As I mentioned before we played some good cricket in the preseason Twenty20 competition. Most of the players chipped in whether it be with bat, ball or in the field. In the final we can up against the ever-consistent Weston Creek. They set a total that was achievable if we could get off to a good start. Jono Dean led the way for us as we chased them down in relative ease.

Twenty20 Winners (back row)Pete Coleborne, Michael Spaseski, Simon Fahey, Dean Southwell, Adam Heading, Jordon McLennan, (front row) Vele Dukoski, Jono Dean, Raglan Maddox

The Konica Cup was the next trophy on offer. Unfortunately we were unable to get our best team on the park throughout the competition. A combination of injuries and players commitment to representative cricket saw us get knocked out at the Super 8 stage.

In the Premiership we played some great cricket up to Christmas only to let it slip after. Pete Coleborne led the way to Christmas with some consistency that has been dormant for years. Jono Dean also showed his class with some fantastic hundreds. As the season went on it turned into a battle to see who would make the top four. Some good wins towards the end enabled us to sneak into third place.

The semi final again saw us lock heads with the eventual winners Weston Creek. They set us a massive target that was out of reach.

Page 21

There were many positives to take from the season. Freebody oval improved out of sight. Dawesy should be very proud of contribution he has made. Twice this year scores of 300 were chased down. As with the last few season we have unearthed some young talent. This year Dean Solway, Vele Dukoski, Luke Ryan, Matt Crow and Luke Bush all played roles in first grade. The talent we have coming through the club is really pleasing, it is a credit to our junior club to see these young players in the senior ranks.

To all the guys who played this year I would like to thank for your support. I will be stepping down as captain with Jono Dean taking over. I look forward to seeing Jono bring the youth forward.

2nd Grade Report

„So Close‟ seems to be a fitting statement to sum up the season for 2nd grade this year. Our very young team struggled for consistency throughout the season and we fell agonisingly short of victory numerous times.

Despite this, there were numerous standout performances throughout the season, which shows the quality of the young talent that is coming through the club. These young players will be our 1st graders in the next couple of seasons and some were even given the opportunity to step up this year.

Some of the standout performances throughout the year included:

 Michael Noble showed good consistency batting at number 3 throughout the year and amassed 423 runs for the year. Hopefully next year he can convert a few more of those starts into big scores.  Sandy Craze was very consistent behind the stumps all year and looked very promising as a low-middle order batsman showing good technique and placing a high value on his wicket.  Our young pace attack headed up by Luke Bush, Luke Ryan and Callum Birtles showed good promise and commitment all year and were well supported by club stalwart Darren Southwell.

One of the lowlights of the year was the loss of all-rounder Ben Rabjohns from the team early in the season due to the tragic death of his father. Our thoughts were with Ben and his family and we hope that he will return to play again with us next year.

I would like to thank everyone who played and helped out 2nd grade during the year, particularly Michael Frost and Peter Solway for helping to lead the side at various stages of the season and Greg Dawes for his efforts in preparing some of the best Freebody wickets in many years.

Page 24

With the amount of talent we have in the club, the 2009-2010 season looks promising for 2nd grade. I look forward to playing with you all next year.

3rd Grade Report

Firstly, let me express my sincere thanks to the parents of our under age players who were ferried around the grounds throughout the year, especially those combining duties with junior games in the morning and then transporting the players to other venues for the afternoon game.

It was also remiss of me not to mention Jodie Dair, Dave Corcoran and Stephen Cross‟s contribution to third grade at the presentation night.

Jodie did a fantastic job of scoring throughout the year and it was one duty that I didn‟t have to worry about. It is great to have the general involvement of a person that contributes without asking “what do I get in return”. So my sincere thanks to Jodie.

Dave Corcoran slipped into the Captains role with ease when I was unavailable, and I‟m sure the players appreciated, at times, a different voice and approach. Thanks Corcs.

Crossy played a significant on and off field role by being a „sounding board‟ for my regular rants, I‟m sure he got sick of a few of these, but he also provided sound advice and at times had to remind me that we were playing third grade and not to have expectations of first grade standards. Not to mention that he was the only guy that was close to my (old) age. Thanks Crossy.

Over the course of the season, Third Grade utilised approx 35 players, this came about by injuries, unavailability or illness at one time or another. So in terms of team stability for the side, it never came about, and thus, with high turnover and younger players, there was some degree of inconsistency in the team‟s performance. (It must also be noted that for the most part of the season it would have been unusual to have more than 4 players over the age of 20 in the side, the rest made up of players ranging in age from 14 to 20.)

Our season started quite well in the Twenty20 comp and we finished runners up in that competition. This was a pleasing result given that most of the players didn‟t know one another before the first game and also being a very young group.

For the course of season „proper‟ we had varied results with disappointing losses, tremendous wins and even a tie! Unfortunately we finished bottom of the table, with the combination of factors, as described above, the culprit.

So on paper, it would appear that third grade had a poor year results wise, but on true reflection the year was about transitioning junior players and developing them into grade cricketers, not only benefiting their own cricket development but building a stronger playing group at QDCC.

I hope that the players will learn from the season gone and that they take the positives and develop their games accordingly, but not forgetting the negatives so as history does not repeat itself.

So with that I hope the players have the courage to take their game and fine tune it by adopting better training and playing habits and for them to evolve their game from talented individual to a player that utilises the talent and produces results.

All those who played in the QDCC 4th grade side had an exciting and very rewarding season. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of captaining the side, and would like to express thanks to the older blokes who offered advice throughout the season, in particular Colin Crouch, Greg Dawes and Jimmy Martin. We always endeavoured to play positive and aggressive cricket, which I believe is vital for the younger guys‟ development into senior cricketers.

Our record for the regular season was 5 wins, 6 losses and 3 draws. We finished 4th in the one day comp, losing the semi final to West's UC. Of course the highlight of the season was winning the Two day competition, after finishing 4th. What I found most satisfying was that every single player made a contribution during the finals be it with the bat, ball or in the field. The real success story was the performances of the young blokes coming through. Jeremy Macdonald, Michael Medved, Mick Elliott and Gordy Lee all showed improvement and will form part of a successful Bluebags Club for many years. Each is capable of attaining higher honours and I am sure that their best cricket is in front of them.

For a few of us though our best cricket took place this season. Jim Martin, Colin Crouch, Peter Newham, Graham Alexander, Greg Dawes, Stephen Cross and I all made very valuable contributions, which led to a very enjoyable season. I am really hoping all these players will

Page 29 again play next year, we grab another bunch of youngsters and we have a crack at defending our Premiership.

To Ian McNamee, Gordon Elliott and Ronnie Bates and the rest of the committee – thankyou for your efforts in ensuring the club survived off the field. Also, thanks to all those volunteers who assisted during the season. Without you guys we would not have a game each week.

I look forward to next season and the challenges it will throw up.

5th Grade Report

In the final wash-up, 5th Grade was again a very competitive team and was a bit unlucky not to make the finals. The weather had a bit to play in the outcome but in the end we weren't quite good enough in a couple of close games towards the back end of the season.

It was great to see Ron McGlashan running around again after a short lay off with a serious back injury, which required "the knife".

Also good to see some more young blokes playing a bit of 5th Grade and then going on to play in the 4th Grade premiership - Mick Elliott, Jeremy McDonald and Gordon Lee, fantastic stuff....

Also good to see youngsters Mitch Fryers and Andrew Downey getting amongst the wickets and playing some fine cricket throughout the year.

Hoping we all stick together and see if we can, not only make the finals next season, but bring home some silverware.

Women’s Team Report

After a difficult couple of seasons the women‟s team roared back with a vengeance this season. With the introduction of a number of new faces the team was competitive from the first game and thoroughly deserved its place in the semi-finals at seasons end. This from a team that often had an average age of 16.

The Twenty20 competition provided a great platform for the players to get to know each other and we came within a of beating Eastlake, our nemesis for many years. Whilst we didn‟t quite make it through to the final, the improvements each week set as up nicely for the Lynne O‟Meara Cup.

The 40 over competition suited our style of play much better than the shorter format with the team showing a definite inclination to wanting to bowl first. This suited our bowling attack as we struggled to take wickets but we were readily able to contain the opposition batting and set ourselves smaller targets.

A pleasing aspect of these run chases was the rate that we regularly scored at just under 5 runs an over. One advantage of that of course was that we got some early finishes!

The season finished with two great contests against Tuggeranong playing them in the last round and the semi final. In the end it was the greater experience of the Tuggeranong players that was the difference. However, they know we‟re coming and as one lark quipped to the Tuggeranong captain after the semifinal „you better win it this year because you won‟t beat this mob next year‟.

From my point of view, the experience the players gained this year should see them wining these close games next season and that lark may well be right.

Finally congratulations to our plethora of representative players, I believe we had greater representation than any other club and congrats to Taylor Wallace for winning the Margaret Hall Trophy. I would like to thank Em Preston and Vanessa Picker for captaining the team and I hope Em enjoyed playing for Box Hill (Melbourne) in the second half of the season. I would also like to thank Janelle Stacey for scoring this season.

I believe the 1984-1985 season was the last time our women‟s team won the premiership and whilst there will be some changes to the competition with the ACT getting a WNCL side, I just get the feeling that 2009-2010 might again be the year of the Bluebag.
