Page 7 Vale – Luke Bush 1 October 1991 – 10 April 2010

On Saturday 10th April 2010, the club lost one of our upcoming stars with the passing of Luke Bush as a result of injuries received in a vehicle accident in Goulburn.

Luke was one of the new breed of Bluebags, a likely lad who made his way from Goulburn to train and play for the club. He was beginning to build a reputation of a quality fast bowler and a tenacious competitor.

Luke was also a very likeable person a ''bit of a rough diamond with a bit of a cheeky side”. From the moment he joined the club, he just seemed to fit in like he had been playing for the club for years. Whether it was at training or in a match, Luke would always give his all. He was always keen to improve his understanding of the game and was would take every opportunity to expand his knowledge by listening to the senior players talking about the game and taking in what was said.

He was never one to complain or carry on about when he got a bowl and where he batted. He always tried to make the most of the opportunities that came his way, but first and foremost, Luke was a team player. He was a gifted sportsman who excelled at any sport he put his hand to.

Luke had just begun studying Architecture at University and was just about to embark on the trip of a lifetime, a stint with The University of Dublin cricket club as their club professional when this tragedy stuck.

The funeral was held at St Saviours Anglican Cathedral in Goulburn and was attended by Luke‟s family, friends, school mates and team mates. Over 500 people were there to pay their last respects and to say their final farewell to Luke.

The club‟s thoughts and sympathies are with his family Michael, Diane, Kate and Ryan.

Page 8 President’s Report

At our presentation night a few years ago, I spoke about the club‟s victory in the 1991/92 1st grade premiership decider (The Unwinnable Final) and the culture of winning that was so prevalent then. Well 3 years on and the club has not only returned to financial viability, but has surpassed expectations with on field performances unequalled in our 90 year history. This feat wasn‟t achieved by the efforts of just a few but by the efforts of every single member of the club.

I endeavour to get to games at Freebody each week and occasionally head over to watch 1st grade when they are away, and it is very pleasing to see how „professional‟ the attitude of the players is and the camaraderie within each team. A lot of this has to be attributed to the Captains and senior members of each team. I am also pleased at the number of “juniors” across all teams and how they are building in confidence and how they are becoming integral to the overall success of the club. I won‟t highlight any individual performance as that will be done in various parts of this report.

Firstly, I would like begin by acknowledging the on field efforts across the club this season.

 Club Championship  Random Computing 1st grade Premiership  Konica Cup  Retained the 1st grade Twenty/20 Trophy  SCG Cup – Quarter finalists  2nd grade 2-day - Minor Premiers and Premiers  2nd grade 1-day – Semi finalist  3rd grade 2-day - Premiers  3rd grade 1-day - Runner‟s Up  4th grade 1-day - Premiers  4th grade 2-day – Semi finalist  5th grade - Minor Premiers  Women‟s Premier League - Runner-up.

Next, I would like to make mention of the DB Robin Awards night and that many people from our club were acknowledged for their efforts or performances during the course of the season. I would like to also acknowledge those efforts as follows:

Ron Bates: Ron was the joint winner in this year‟s Greg Lord Administrator of the Year Award. As Mark Parton (MC) read the citation, which included references to being a dashing right hand batsmen and an excellent all round fielder, the audience half expected to see Michael Clark come up onto the stage.

Greg Dawes: There was also a fair bit of talk on the night about Greg who, with ongoing advice from Rohan Ditton and the assistance of staff at Queanbeyan City Council, was credited for the fine work that has gone into the wickets and outfields at Freebody and Town Park. This was evident in that for the first time in living memory Queanbeyan City hosted a grade cricket final and 2nd grade to boot.

Page 9 Gordon Elliott: Gordon again is the envy of most of the grade clubs. His meticulous attention to detail has enabled the club to continue to build financial security. We have a healthy bank balance, thank in no small part to Gordon‟s efforts.

Greg Dawes and Gordon Elliott were also acknowledged with Cricket ACT Volunteers Awards.

I would also like to acknowledge the assistance that we received from Club and family members for their efforts in catering or scoring for National and Grade competitions.

 Faye Solway  Kathy Elliott  Lyn McLennan  Shannon Newham  Peta Mannix  Shane Martin

Finally, I would also like to acknowledge the contributions of those who were so much part of the club‟s success 20 years ago and are still involved with the club, people like Michael Frost, Colin Crouch, Peter Solway and John Bull to name but a few.

The Trophy Cabinet

Page 10 Secretary’s Report

I begin my report on a sad note. I like so many others in our community, was shocked by the news of the untimely passing of one of the club‟s young guns, Luke Bush. Whilst Luke‟s time at the club was short, he certainly left an impact on everyone he met. He will be sadly missed.

On Field Well, what a year. Where to start?

I guess firstly congratulations must go to every single player in the club as we won our first Club Championship for almost 20 years. Probably the most prestigious award a club can win as it shows the depth of talent in a club and the commitment by all the players. It was one of the proudest moments in my life, jointly accepting the Trophy with Jonothan Dean and Ian McNamee at the DB Robin Awards Dinner.

z

Ron Bates, Jono Dean and Ian McNamee with the Club Championship Trophy

In my report last year, I highlighted the need for all players to commit to the club and to make themselves available week in and week out. I believe that the foundation for our success this season came from this commitment as each team was able to field at least the same core group of players every week.

I will start by congratulating Jono Dean and his lads, for not only retaining the 1st grade Pre-season Cup (albeit by washout) but more importantly winning the Konica Cup and backing that up by winning the Random Computing 1st Grade Premiership. Added to this the club also qualified for the finals of the SCG cup. Unfortunately in our first game we narrowly went down to a very good Parkes team. Overall not a bad captaincy debut season.

Page 11 Next congrats to Ben Stensrud and 2nd grade. Ben, despite his youngish age, has been around the club for years. In this, his second season as Captain, the team performed beyond expectations. They made the semis of the one-day competition only to lose to a very good Weston Creek team. They then went on to finish the two-day competition as Minor Premiers. Determined to go one better, in the semi against North‟s, they just didn‟t beat their opponents they thumped them. In the feat of winning the 2nd grade premiership, they became the first team in living memory from Queanbeyan to win a Premiership on home soil.

Now to 3rd grade. Building on from the success of 4th grade in the previous season most of the team made the step up into 3‟s and as a result the team had a nice balance of experience and youth with Lea Hansen again at the helm. The team made the final of the one-day competition, only to lose to North‟s. With Lea in great form, he got the call from Jono Dean to bolster 1st grade bowling stocks and handed over the reins to Rohan Ditton. Actually the team was captained by committee, with Rohan nominated to toss the coin. The season also saw the welcome return of Dave Monck. In the final, the team took on Ginninderra and from the time Ditts won the toss, the boys were in complete control and won the match by over 100 runs.

Finally to 4th grade. Peter Solway returned to full time cricket this year to lead another band of young stars, backed up by a couple of experienced old hands in the form of Simon Mann and John Bull. Despite a slow start to the season, the lads found their feet and qualified for the one-day final. In a man of the match performance, John Bull was the key in team securing the title. The team went on to qualify for the finals of the two-day competition only to go down in the semi (on a less that friendly Jamison deck) to a very strong West‟s team, who would go on to win the title. One of the highlights of the season must be Simon Mann‟s maiden for the club and a big one it was too with Simon scoring 154.

I would also like to congratulate those players who achieved a personal milestone this year.

Finally as a tribute on his retirement, Lea Hansen was presented with the club‟s “Spirit of Cricket‟ award.

Off Field The club administratively and financially continues to go from strength to strength. We now have a healthy bank balance, which will go a long way to ensure that the club is in a position to weather any uncertainty in the corporate sector over the next few years.

This year the club welcomed onto the committee Chris Doyle and Lea Hansen as well as the return of Graham Hannaford after a brief hiatus away from the club. Stephen Cross was also back in the fold after a brief „retirement‟. Unfortunately due to other commitments Chris Doyle and Ian Hamill both had to step down from the committee during the early part of the season.

Gordon continues to be a great bookkeeper and to maintain his reputation as the best treasurer in the district.

Greg Dawes continued from where he left off in the previous season with the outstanding work on the wickets. This year he also took control of Town Park wicket and with the great improvement in standard of the wicket and outfield, the final of the Premier League was played there. I am sure that the wickets he prepared were instrumental in our overall success. Superlatives cease to be used when describing the quality of the wicket and they are just referred to as a „Dawsey special‟

Peter Baker took on the role of our Grade Cricket Committee representative, he also continued in his role as Women‟s Coach and Women‟s Council Representative. I am amazed at how he could find time to do all the things he does.

Dean Mansfield continued with his role as Webmaster and in conjunction with Steve Hodgman from the Junior Club, revamped the whole website.

Stephen Cross and Greg Dawes joined forces to take on the role of selectors and did a great job with teams each week. They had a tough job this year, not who to put into the teams, but who to leave out such was the good performances by all the teams.

Steve Cross also joined with Rohan Ditton to organise a number of social activities including Family Day at Freebody.

Page 13 This year I was invited to participate in the weekly sports show on Queanbeyan 96.7 FM hosted firstly by James Buckley and then Pete „Nook‟ Newham when he took over the reins. It was a great experience in being able to share the club‟s exploits and successes with the citizens of Queanbeyan and beyond. I would also like to thank James Buckley and Josh Spasaro (who took over from James as the Sports Reporter for the Queanbeyan Age) for their efforts in keeping our club at the forefront of sports news each week.

I would also like to acknowledge the financial support of our sponsors including the Queanbeyan Kangaroos Football Club, Ian McNamee & Partners, ActewAGL, Baker Deanne & Nutt, Canberra Investment Corporation, J & J Interiors, Peter Jensen‟s Sportsbiz, LJ Hooker Financial Services and Sportsman‟s Warehouse.

I would also like to thank Daryl Jenkins from the Canberra Trophy Centre for the donation of an engraved crystal decanter as well as Dave Shiels and Ian Black from Country Style Windows who donated the frame for the Brad Haddin personally autographed bat.

The 1st Grade Player Sponsorship arrangements again proved to be a good source of revenue with the following businesses also supporting our club.

 Spaseski & Assoc Pty Ltd  Frank Wilson Solicitor  Intelligent Alarms and Monitoring Services  Fosters  National Australia Bank Queanbeyan  Capital Terrace Auto Repairs  Andrew Deane Insurance Services Pty Ltd

I must not forget to acknowledge the support that was provided to the club from the staff from Queanbeyan City Council who are always ready to provide assistance whenever we required it.

For those of you who attended our Annual Dinner and Presentation night, I am sure you remember what a great night it was. On behalf of everyone in the club I would like to extend our thanks to Rohan Ditton, Stephen Cross (who volunteered to be our MC on the night), Greg Dawes and Michael Frost for their efforts in making it a night to remember. I must also thank Rohan for his great speech on the night, however I have to make mention that next year we will be invoking the Academy Award rule and speeches will be limited to 2 minutes.

I would also like to pass on congratulations personally received from Dr Mike Kelly (Federal Member for Eden-Monaro), Mr Steve Whan (State Member for Monaro) and Cr Tim Overall (Mayor, Queanbeyan City Council) on a great year.

Thanks also go to Peter Coleborne, Dean Mansfield, Chris Doyle and Jimmy Martin who joined with me on a wet Sunday to assist the Salvation Army with their Red Shield Appeal this year.

Finally, to the wives, partners, girlfriends, and families of all the committee members who, not only assisted with the various functions and tasks, but just as important, provided their understanding, generosity and support to their respective partners, which is duly acknowledged and sincerely appreciated.

Page 14 The Future The big challenge to the club is to build on the successes of last season and to become the benchmark by which all the other clubs measure success. We need to continue to recognise and develop our talented juniors as well as make our club the first choice for new players coming to the Canberra region.

We also need to put more effort into social activities and fundraising. Our bank account balance is healthy now, but that could all change without warning. We need to ensure that our community obligations are not forgotten as well.

Page 15 Treasurer’s Report

The club realised an operating profit for 2009-10 of $6,726 and marked a continuation of the club's strong financial performances in the past few years. The result reflected continued strong support from the local business community including from its major sponsor The Queanbeyan Kangaroos Rugby Leagues Club. Other major supporters were ActewAGL, The Sportsman's Warehouse, Baker Deane & Nutt, LJ Hookers, J & J Interiors, and the Queanbeyan City Council who again delivered 3 high quality and well maintained cricket grounds throughout the season. The club's "Players Sponsorship Program" has also continued to grow.

Given the improvement in the ground and pitch preparation the club was selected by ACT Cricket to host several representative matches and this also impacted on the favourable operating result. The club's strong support from the local community also enabled the club's General Committee to deliver improved amenities back to the players including the purchase of a ball machine and pitch covers for both Freebody grounds.

The club's Balance Sheet at 31 May 2010 reflects a strong position which the General Committee has been committed to accumulating over the past few seasons and has given the club the opportunity to invest further in playing and ground equipment for future seasons.

1st Grade Report 2009/10 Premiers & Konica Cup Champions

The 2009-2010 season was a fantastic season for the Bluebags. Let‟s be honest it‟s not every day a team wins all premiership trophies on offer, 3 to be exact!

In my 3 seasons for the bluebags it was clear to me that the club was building towards something great.

From the time the first ball was bowled, it was clear to everyone that this was the season to make things happen. 3 years in a row Bagger‟s had been knocked out in the semis of the 2- day and 1-day competitions, well not this year!

The 2009/10 season started well with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm throughout the club. We had good solid build up through our pre-season preparations. This season we welcomed Sandy Craze and Luke Bush into the fold. Sandy and Luke joined the other young guns Dean Solway, Jordan McLennan and Michael Spaseski. There was a good mix of experience and youth in the 1st grade squad so things were looking good.

First up we had to defend our Twenty/20 title, however wet weather intervened and it was washed out without a ball being bowled. Trophy retained. (1 of 3)

The Konica Cup was a real strong point for the Bluebags this year. I think a combination of hunger, planning and great execution from the boys played a vital part in our success in this format. We went through the round stage not really being tested but still having some great team/individual performances. Southy was again dominant with the new ball, Heads and Higgsy always explosive with the bat whilst taking plenty of wickets. To top this off, our fielding was outstanding.

We went through the preliminary rounds of the Cup undefeated. In the semi final, we easily accounted for West‟s with Southy (4/29) and Leathal (3/43) tearing them apart with their bowling.

The final then came down to a matchup between us and Cup holders Weston Creek. In the first final, things didn‟t really go our way but thankfully the gods of cricket were smiling on us, as they decided that the match would be played on another day.

In the replay, the boys were not going to let Creek dominate again and we bowled them out for 202, with Leathal bagging 3/27 and Higgsy 3/38. We had a bit of a wobble at the top of the order to be 2/21 but then Jordie (84 no) combined with Higgsy (92) for a 168 run partnership to put us within touching distance of the target. Though we lost a couple more wickets, we passed their score in the 34 over. The victory was sweet. (2 of 3)

To the premiership. We started our campaign on a great note, winning the first 4 games (including an outright against Ginninderra). Then in the last game before the Christmas break,

Page 32 we came back to earth with a thud losing to Tuggers at Condor, a match that also saw Heads nearly loose a finger in trying to take a return catch off his own bowling (thankfully it was only a bad dislocation and he would return to play a vital role later in the season). Everyone in the team did a bit of soul searching and resolved to re-focus on the job at hand.

After Christmas the team just went from strength to strength and with the addition of Lea Hansen to our ranks, the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle was in place. Again the only hiccough was the loss to our arch rivals Creek. We finished the season in second place and faced off against West‟s in the semi final at Stirling. In many ways, this match warranted being a Grand Final such was the intensity in which it was played.

Having lost the toss and asked to bat first on a sticky wicket, we scored 308 with Higgsy scoring a well struck hundred and me, well I struck out for my second club 99. We were probably about 50 or so runs shy of a good score on that ground. In reply West‟s fought all the way and though we had them 9 down for 255, Nath Lyon held the tail together and they came within a whisker of toppling us. Sniffing a slight chance they asked us to bat again, thus taking the game into day 3. Solid batting then saw us comfortably move to 3 for 168 when West‟s conceded defeat and thus we booked a berth in the Grand Final.

Grand Final day finally and we took on Minor Premiers Tuggeranong for the title at the Home of Cricket in the ACT - Manuka Oval (2nd Home if you count Freebody). Tuggeranong won the toss and went on the offensive straight away by offering us the first use of the wicket. Tuggies kept the pressure on and no one really got away from them, but we were consistent and put together a number of handy partnerships. The best was a 76 run partnership between Heads and Junior Sol for the 5th wicket, followed by a vital 9th wicket partnership of 33 between Spags and Sandy (with a season best effort of 34 n.o.). Whilst we finished with a score of 301, we knew that Tuggeranong were a good side and quite capable of chasing down that target.

Our defence of that score started brilliantly with an early wicket to Southy and from that point on we kept the pressure on them. Whenever Tuggies started to put a partnership together, we found a way of breaking it, either through the guile of Higgsy and his tweakers, or through brute force of Southy. Both were both ably supported by Heads, Leathal, Spags and Bushie, each doing their bit to maintain pressure on their batsmen. As the shadows grew longer on Sunday, we could taste victory, but Ossie held us out and we just couldn‟t get that last wicket.

Monday morning it did not look good with dark clouds and a bit of overnight rain. It was like Tuggies boys had been out all night doing a rain dance. However the groundsmen and his crew managed to get everything right and the day started on time. It didn‟t take long as Southy wrapped things up with the last ball of his first over, grabbing a little knick from Tuggies tailender Evan Kellar. You little beauty 3 out of 3.

Every single player played their part this season, be it a wicket at a crucial time or a stubborn innings that provided impetus for other batsmen to shine, or for that piece of brilliant fielding that culminated in at wicket. I won‟t single out any particular players from First‟s as I am sure that their individual efforts are acknowledged elsewhere in this report. So congratulations and thanks to every single one of you.

Of course you cannot have a successful team without having a good administration, so I would like to thank Ian Mac and all the members of the Management Committee who can due fully share in the on field success.

Page 33

Jono and Higgsy with the spoils of war

Leathal about to let another thunderbolt rip

I would also like to thank Dawesy and his band of helpers for the work he has put into the wickets at Freebody. They are now considered the best in the district.

Congrats also go to Ben and the 2nd graders as well as Ditts and the 3‟s for also bring home some major silverware this season. Congrats also go to Sol and his young charges who won the one-day title in 4th grade.

I would also like to personally thank my partner Kim and all the wives, partners and girlfriends of all the players for their understanding and support they provide. I would also like to specially mention Shannon Newham and Lyn McLennan for the great lunches they do. Thanks Shannon and Lyn, hope to see you back again next season.

On a sad note we all mourned the loss of Luke Bush who tragically passed away on 10th April 2010, the day after our Presentation Night. Bushy played an extremely important role in the Bagger‟s premiership winning performances this past season. His great performance, country humour and knack for turning up late always kept the lads laughing and enjoying each other‟s company. Bushy you will be sorely missed mate.

On behalf of myself, the boys and the club, I would like to again offer our deepest sympathies to Michael, Diane, Kate and Ryan, but also take the opportunity to thank you for bringing Bushy to the Queanbeyan Cricket Club, he will be sorely missed but remembered forever as one of the great club men.

This coming season will be for you Bushy!

What a great season this has been for 2nd grade, and the club as a whole!

This year was the first 2 day premiership for Queanbeyan 2nd grade since the 92/93 season and a great way to cap off an excellent year by the team. I put our success this year down to having a good mix of experience in the team as well as an overall good team attitude. Having players like Peter Coleborne, Dean Mansfield and Simon Fahey in the team, who have all played a lot of 1st grade cricket, has been a big help in bringing some stability to the batting order as well as helping to keep the youngsters like Keifer Martyn, Pat Toole and Matt Crowe on the right path.

2nd grade is often thought of as the development grade for up and coming players but I hope to keep a good mix of experience in there next season to ensure it remains one of the strongest grades in the club and to encourage players to push their way into the team and up into 1st grade.

Our batting this year has been the strongest and most consistent that I can ever recall in 2nd grade. Having a batting line up that can consistently both set and chase big totals is always going to win you matches. A couple of the best team batting performances this year were;  7/324 against Ginninderra in a one day game at Freebody, and  418 in the semi final against North‟s at Freebody.

Page 36

The boys celebrating a great victory

Southie’s inspired bowling effort bagging 6 wickets

Excellent seasons from our key bowlers Darren Southwell, Luke Ryan and Matt Crowe have enabled us to back up our strong batting performances. When a bit of „variety‟ was required tossing the ball to Dave Corcoran would always produce a crucial wicket.

There was lots of pressure on players to perform in order to hold their spot in the team this year; this is a really good sign for the club and shows the strength of our younger players coming through. Players like Pat Toole and „Simple‟ Jack Murdoch are good examples of this. Some of the stand-out personal performances throughout the year included:  Darren Southwell‟s man of the match performance in the Grand Final against Western Creek, taking 6/33 and was the standout bowler all year,  Raglan Maddox scoring 116 not out against Tuggeranong at Freebody Oval, his first century for the club, and  Simon Fahey‟s devastating 116 not out off an estimated 60 balls against North‟s at Majura.

Special thanks goes to Greg Dawes for the amazing wickets he prepared this season at Freebody, especially the ones he prepared for our Semi and Grand final matches which looked like they belonged at the SCG! The conditions at Freebody this season were 2nd to none and I didn‟t hesitate to elect to play our finals matches there.

I would like to thank everyone who played 2nd grade throughout the year and helped to keep the team running smoothly.

I can‟t wait for the 2010/2011 season to start and I look forward to another great season from the Bluebags!

A very diverse Queanbeyan Bluebags 3rd grade side took to the field with limited expectations for 2009-2010. With the young stars who were expected to come through 3rds moving into 2nd grade due to their improvement (and premiership success justified those decisions) and the even younger stars clearly needed time in 4ths to start their grade cricket pathway it meant that a number of us veterans were mixed with only a couple of young bucks. It proved to be a winning combination!

In summary:  Winning the final of the 2 day competition in one of the most convincing victories of the season;  We made the 1 day grand final – only to put in our worst effort of the year. Still a fine effort from the lads to make the final; and  Several players developed their skills very nicely throughout the season and should be very competitive next season in either 2nd grade or pushing for higher honours including, Pat Toole, Jack Murdoch, Callum Birtles and Phil Moore.

We also had a number of players returning to the club who played invaluable roles during the year. We welcomed back David Monck, Dean Stewart, Graeme McLennan and Marty Frost to the club. Each played a key role in the success and added immensely to the whole season. We were lucky enough to also have Colin Crouch, Rohan Ditton, Graeme Alexander and Steve Cross who all made the jump from 4ths last year to the mighty 3rds.

Two of the clubs young stars Phil Moore and Jack Murdoch Other highlights throughout the year were:

 The two centuries to Pat Toole. Pat is a very talented young player who will develop into a very good 2nd grade player and with some fine tuning could play a role in our 1st grade side.  The appealing of David Monck – a sight to behold for all the lads. David also played an integral role with his wily leg spin and outstanding fielding. These efforts after a 15 year absence from the game.  Jack Murdoch‟s tenacity in the final – A gritty innings of 68 to set-up the victory. „Simple Jack‟ also played his part of keeping the lads entertained! No more needs to be said!  The outstanding batting form of stalwart Steve Cross. Crossie formed a Simpson/Lawry type combination with Michael Frost as between them they scored over 1000 runs for the year and almost always ensured a great start for the team.  The express bowling of Co-skipper Lethal Lea Hansen. There would be at least a few ANU players who would still be cleaning their duds after one frightening spell at the home of the noodle eaters. Lea was an inspiration to all the players and later played an important role in the 1st grade success.

Finally, thank you to all the Committee for their efforts in 2009-2010. You cannot be successful without the support from the likes of Ian McNamee, Greg Dawes (thanks for the best ever wickets and grounds), Gordon Elliott, Peter Solway and Ronnie Bates – thank you for your efforts in steering the ship and making sure the QDCC survives and thrives. Bring on 2010-2011.

This season was another hugely successful year for the 4th grade team. From a trophy point of view we were successful in the 1 day competition however went down in the semi-final of the 2 day competition. More importantly though, the club blooded another group of talented youngsters who we believe have the ability to progress up the grades in future years.

The blend of old and young players in the lower grades is a formula that seems to be working well for the club and is one that needs to be maintained in the future if possible.

The 1 day competition win was a fantastic result against the strong West‟s line-up. John Bull (94) and Josh Gregory (47) laid the platform with a match winning partnership to steer the team to 224 after its 50 overs. An excellent spell from Simon Mann saw the visitors on the back foot from the outset and then Mark Solway and Jeremy MacDonald each bowled 10 overs of well controlled spin to ensure victory for the Queanbeyan side. All players listed in the team below played their part and made excellent contributions throughout the year.

A big thank you to the 30 odd players from the club who played in our 1 day premiership side – well done….a great achievement!

The performance of the team in the 2 day competition was also strong throughout the season. Stephen Harris, Michael Medved and Michal Elliott all showed signs that they will be strong grade players for our club into the future.

Our side finished the season in 3rd place and faced the strong West‟s X1 once again in a hard fought semi final. After being caught on a bowler friendly wicket and losing regular wickets, it was left to John Bull, Michael Medved to post a competitive score of 165. A lack of early wickets meant we were always struggling and finally West‟s made the required runs being 5 wickets down.

All in all a very enjoyable and successful season was had by all.

Thank you to Stephen Cross and Greg Dawes in their role of selectors. We always fielded a full team which can sometimes be a challenge throughout the year.

Finally a huge thank you to our curator, Greg Dawes, for the work he put into the Freebody Oval wickets. It is great to play on decent strips and certainly helps the development of our younger players to learn and improve their skills.

Queanbeyan Town Park on a sunny afternoon

5th Grade had a reasonably successful season by finishing on top of the ladder after the home and away matches. Disappointing not to, or at least, make it to the Grand Final but that‟s the way cricket goes sometimes. I firmly believe we had the side to take it out but just couldn‟t quite put it together during the semi final.

This year we welcomed into our ranks Andrew Beattie, Matt Chapman, Dave Jensen, Daniel Johnston as well as the return of the old war horse Jimmy Martin.

There were a number of good performances throughout the year which was pleasing to see. We had a slow and inconsistent but once we came to grips with new 45 over format we began to put some good scores in the book. All in all it was a pretty good season but we just need to believe in our own ability and to go the extra step next season.

Congratulations to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade in winning their respective competitions and also to 4th Grade who took out the one day competition – well done to all concerned there.

Great to see the Club winning the Club Championship for the ‟09/10 cricket season – a fantastic effort by everyone involved within the club, an effort that we should all be very proud of.

I would also like to thank Dawsey and his band of helpers for the great work on the Town Park wicket and also the council for a great outfield. It was great to see the ground in such good condition throughout the season.
