FOCUS ON PDHPE

The Personal Development, Health and Physical Education department continues to maintain a very busy program of events in 2013. Our senior students are preparing for Trial Higher School and Preliminary Yearly Examinations. Best of luck to these students! We are presently reviewing the second draft of the national curriculum syllabus for Health and Physical Edu- cation (HPE). This review will finish at the end of July, leading to the new national syllabus being written and then given to the Board of Studies, hopefully by the end of the year. This will provide greater opportuni- ty for our students to engage in ranges of physical activity as they get older. We are also very enthusiastic about the prospect of combining this with our new gymnasium, class rooms and movement laboratory. This will substantially improve the opportunity to provide our students with new experiences in some of the best facilities in the state. It is exciting to see the Gymnasium project starting to take shape, and there is no doubt it will add a new dimension to the delivery of our subject area.

Our Combined High School (CHS) knockout teams have had great success so far this year.  Open Boys Soccer are now in the State semi final after beating Smith ‗s Hill HS from Wollongong 1-0 in the quarter finals. Before this they beat Sydney Tech High School in a thrilling game at Kelso HS with a golden goal scored by Andrew Smith. In extra time.  Open Girls Soccer won against the Sydney East school from Cronulla 3- 0 after being nil all at half time. The girls are now playing in Sydney in the state quarter final against Glenwood HS.  Open Boys Rugby League played the final 16 of the State round– University Shield against Chifley Senior Campus from Western Sydney on Tuesday 30th at Carrington Park. This was an exciting win and the boys are now in the state quarter finals.  Under 14‘s Buckley Shield played the final 16 of the State round against Chifley College at Carrington Park on Thursday 25th July. They were narrowly defeated 32-24 after being 12 all at half time. Three quick tries in the second half by Chifley made the difference to the final result after coming back well in the second half.

Western School Sport and Representatives to CHS State Carnivals  Cross Country – Damian Mays, Kayne McDougall, Brianna Woodhead, Olivia Pugh, Aidan McBur- ney, Danielle Pearson, Emily Woodhead and Samantha Chapman. Damian was the best performed, gaining a top twenty spot coming 17th out of over 100 runners in his age.  Western Region Athletics carnival ran on Friday 26th July at Morse park in Bathurst with our largest ever contingent of athletes representing the school in outstanding fashion.

Individual Sporting success  Jed Betts was selected in the NSW CHS Development squad to tour New Zealand later this term.  Ryan Peacock and Tyler Horton were both selected in the Australian Indoor teams for their re- spective age group.  .Harrison Carter has been selected in the NSW Cycling Road Racing under 18 team.  Scott Matheson played very well in the State age golf championships recently.

Astley Cup report 2013

Pride, jubilation, sense of accomplishment and adulation are words which come to mind. It is hard to de- scribe the feelings amongst team members, parents and coaching staff over the last 2 weeks of Astley Cup competition. Scenes, the like of which I have never seen before on the return journey from a sport- ing trip filled the Bathurst High Campus buses with students and coaching staff having the school song ringing in their ears. Renditions were sung with gusto as we passed through towns on the way home! What a spectacular effort from everyone involved over the last two weeks of the Astley Cup. The sports- manship and behaviour of the team was commented on by members of the public from Dubbo and Bath- urst, other team players and members of staff from Orange and Dubbo High Schools. The manner in which this team conducted themselves bought great credit to themselves and Bathurst High Campus.

Round 1 vs Orange High School Netball was played first in the round and Orange dominated as expected, though not to the extent that they would have liked. The girls played exceptionally well to keep them to a relatively modest goal dif- ferential. Thursday, our Tennis team came up against formidable opponents, with Orange victorious 13- 3. Our boys were able to claw back a large portion of the points difference by winning, in a great display of basketball, 63-28. Orange were expecting to dominate the hockey , having many Western Region and State representatives in the team. Holding them scoreless for over 60 minutes was something special to watch, every girl on the field giving 100% effort! The final score of 2 – nil came with two late goals to Orange after many times pressuring our goal circle. The girls should be very proud of their effort!

Going into day 2 and behind by Orange by 116 points was not encouraging but our strongest sports were yet to come. Athletics is a very close sport each year in points, 2013 again the same, with the score being just in our favour 52-48 and our relay teams coming home strongly to cement the win. The Rugby League was pencilled in prior to the round starting as an important sport for Bathurst High and they did not disappoint. Watched by one of the biggest crowds ever seen at Carrington Park, our team came out firing, scoring 18 unanswered points in the first half. The final score of 36 -6 was a fitting finale to a great game played by both teams. Soccer was going to be our big ace card, both teams being Western Region champions, a big plus in our favour. The girls game was exciting with teams having multiple scoring opportunities but they failed to put the ball away. The only goal was scored by Hayley Cheney and Bathurst came away victorious.

The equation was simple coming into the final sport, with the team that won the boys‘ soccer winning the tie. A draw in the game would also have been enough to give Orange the win. After a nail-biting match where the scores were locked at nil-all at half-time, Bathurst was able to get the all-important goal through an abso- lute belter from Andrew Smith with less than 15 minutes to go. At the finish, the home crowd went wild with delight.

Round 2 vs Dubbo Senior College

It‘s always hard getting up ear- ly and 4.30am is especially difficult on a cold and wet Bathurst morning. Adding 2 ½ hours of bus travel to Dubbo capped this off nicely. The first sport of the Dubbo round was tennis.

Our tennis players were able to sustain enthusiasm throughout the morning despite coming up against some stiff competition. One of the highlights was the final game of mixed doubles which went down to a tie breaker. Felicity King and Bryson Richards were eventual winners 7-3. The final score of 13 sets to 3 sets was exactly the same as the previous week against Orange HS.

Our girls‘ football team was hoping for a role reversal and regain lost points. This was achieved and more, as they scored 5 unanswered goals. Goals were scored by Haillie Provest x 2, Haley Cheney x 2 and Jess

Fearnley. The boys football game was a different scenario, Dubbo putting a high ball through and scoring within 3 minutes of the kick off. A see-sawing game over both halves ended up being tied at 2 all at full time, a fitting end for a fantastic game between two very evenly matched teams. Goals were scored by Mitchell Rooke and Andrew Smith.

On the journey to the girls‘ hockey game in West Dubbo, text messages of the score went from 1 to 4—nil at half time. In what was one way traffic for our team, scoring at will was the tale of the game. Emma Siejka starred with 6 goals along with Alana Lang- ford who scored two including a cracking goal from the top of the circle. Other goals were scored by Jasmine Mcleod and Maddie O‘Leary.

At the end of the girls‘ hockey, a final score

line of 9 to Bathurst HC and nil to Dubbo Sen- ior College had the campus out to a 94 point lead going into day 2. Athletics had a chillier morning and this may have resulted in a slower than expected start. It was our girls who performed exceptionally well, winning many of the events on offer. Great running from Daniel Mays in Yr 7 in the 1500, coming second, and Kayne McDougall coming third plus Josh Small winning the high jump in a ‗Jump Off‖ were just some of the highlights of the morning.

The Rugby League at Apex Oval, always a highlight, did not disappoint. A very physical display from both teams turned into an arm wrestle between two equally matched teams. Dubbo lead at half time 18-12. The second half proved to be more in our favour and this showed with the score running out, at full time, 32-22. Tries to Dillon Toole, and Josh Small completing of conversions were important in moving the overall tally out to a commanding lead going into the girls‘ netball and boys‘ basketball.

Astley Cup cont…...

The Girls‘ Netball was expected to be close. The game went end to end with both teams scoring evenly matched goals and being almost even throughout the whole game. Great patches of play for our team with Hannah LePaio strong in defence, Carly Hanman leaving nothing to chance with great movement around the court and Claire Woolmington and Jessica Newstead strong in attack. The final 30 seconds were very much going in our favour and with a tied ball game Jessica Newstead sunk the winning goal only to be called back for shooting off the mark and eventually missing the shot. A draw a fitting end to a great game!

146 points was the lead going into the final game, a point which did not play on the basketball teams‘ mind as they were able to dominate from the opening whistle. Great passages of play down the court had the team scoring at will. The final score of 51-34 was a fitting finish to their basketball campaign for 2013.

In scenes reminiscent of the John Aloisi free kick to get into the Football World Cup, all our teams counted down the remaining 10 seconds and ran onto the court, lifting basketball players and others in the middle of the court. The final score of 483 to 317 gave us our second win and the overall Astley Cup by a resounding 166 points over Dubbo Senior College.

Debating News

Mulvey Cup

After their stunning win against Orange in Round 2 of the Mulvey Cup, the senior debating team comprising Anne Murray, Alex Neary, Tyler Graves and Mel Arthur (substituting for that elite sportsperson, Hannah Le- paio) travelled to Dubbo on Wednesday 26th June. As the negative side, they debated the topic: ‗That there‘s too much violence on our streets.‘ They argued convincingly that violence is a fact of life but in we are fortunate to have a strong police force, politicians who have reacted effectively to incidents in the past with relevant legislation and that such threats are the exception rather than the norm. The Dubbo team put up a val- iant effort, but the Bathurst Team was unbeatable, winning the round and securing the Mulvey Cup for another year. Well done, team!

There was no ‗resting on their laurels‘ as, upon arriving back in Bathurst, the team swapped cars and headed to Sydney with Ms Cloherty for the State Quarter Finals of the Premier‘s Debating Competition against Chelten- ham Girls High. The topic was ‗That everyone should have to speak a second language‘ with Bathurst arguing the affirmative case. It was a close contest with the initiative swinging back and forth as the debate progressed. The panel of adjudicators finally awarded the debate to the negative, however, it was a valiant effort by a team that has now reached the State Quarter Finals twice, the State Semi Finals once and won the Mulvey Cup two years in a row.

Thank you to Mr Murray for helping to transport the team and being chief cheer leader.

WOW! Well done team!

School App Launch—Thank You P&C

Great News! Our school now has a mobile phone app that has been sponsored by our wonderful and active P&C. This is a little application that sits on your phone and gives you instant access to our school information when you click on it, 24/7. The app gives parents the ability to instantly access newsletters without going to the website, or to send in a sick note or late note while you stand outside the school because you forgot to write a paper note! It also directs you straight to our Millennium Parent Portal where you can log in and have access to the calendar and student notices. You are also able to send in your change of details form straight to the office.

We will be sharing many of the other features with you over the coming weeks, but for now, download it to your smartphone by going to either the Apple App Store or Android Google Play Market and search for our school name. Once you have found it press install or download. It is not a windows 8 App yet but it can be accessed through a web page on windows 8 devices.

In order to do all these wonderful things remotely each family MUST identify by calling or dropping in to register an email address with the school. When you send in your information a confirmation email is sent to that address for par- ents’ checking purposes. We use the email address that comes in as identity confirmation—it is basically a signature.

There is an option to take a photo at a school event and send it through to us. We are going to use that as a source of rich information and exchange between the school and the community when our students are doing great things that we can’t record. There is also an option to request a meeting with a teacher. And more functionality will follow as we learn how to use it better.

We are very excited about this additional development in our pursuit of excellence in communication! Please tell your friends—it is a free app.

Not just an App but EFTPOS—thank you P&C again We are moving slowly into the 21st . We now have eftpos at the front office. Once again this was a P&C initiative. You can still ring in and make payments by leaving card numbers over the phone as well. Our next aim is online pay- ments but our financial systems have to be upgraded before we can manage that. This should happen over the next eighteen months

Sport and Feedback from Chifley College. You have already read about the fantastic achievements of our students in sport, culture, academic pursuits and commu- nity engagement. I am virtually always ( and that is a big statement for a Principal who has very high expectations in this regard) just so proud of the way our students conduct themselves when they are representing the school. After our re- cent games against Chifley College the principal of the western sydney college, rang me to say what great hosts we were and how impressed he was with our students and the teachers who organised the visit. He especially wanted to thank Mr Crawford for his efforts. I often receive this sort of feedback from other schools and organisations when our stu- dents are out and about. This doesn’t happen by accident but through teachers and students working together. It brings great credit to the school and our community.

Future Directions

The commencement of Term 3 marks what is arguably the most significant series of events on the college calendar. Future Directions is the process which supports Year 10 students at both campuses to plan for their future careers. For many students, this will involve selecting their subjects for Year 11, 2014. For others, this will mean planning their transition into the workforce. Whatever your child‘s plans for the future, Denison College staff will be working overtime this term to make the transition as painless and as successful as possible.

On Tuesday 16th July, Year 10 Assemblies were conducted at both campuses and students were introduced to the process and given copies of the Senior Studies Guide 2014-2015, a copy of the Transition Action Plan, which needs to be returned to either Mr Hurford (Kelso HC) or Mrs Dunshea (BHC) by Friday 26th July, and an invitation to attend the Future Directions Night at Charles Sturt University, which occurred last Wednes- day, 24th July.

I would like to thank all of those parents, students and staff who attended Future Directions Night. It was a very successful evening, with CSU‘s largest lecture theatre filled and positive feedback from parents, teachers and representatives from TAFE, VERTO, CSU, Skillset and Industry Links, who manned subject information booths and met with parents and students throughout the evening.

The next key event will be the student/parent interviews which will be conducted at Bathurst HC from 19th-23rd August and at Kelso HC from 26th-30th August. I encourage all parents to look out for invitations to these interviews, as they are a critical part of ensuring that the college is able to best meet the needs of each student.

Any inquiries regarding Future Directions can be directed to the Head Teachers Senior Studies, Mrs Murphy (KHC) and Mr Browning (BHC).

Open Girls Football

The open girls football team had a win on Wednesday 24th September against Cronulla High School 3 nil. The girls are now into the final 8 of the state knockout competition. They will play Glenwood High at Glen- wood.

The girls have a solid attack based on teamwork. Every girl contributes each game and it is difficult to name standout players. The game against Cronulla was a very close contest in the first half, with both teams having chances.

Bathurst High managed to turn the game with a goal early in the second half. The defence ncluding Kandy Kennedy, Lydia Nancarrow, Linden Murphy, Paige Debenham and Lauren Howarth was awesome. The goals were scored by Hayley Cheney who made some strong attacking runs throughout the game, Hailee Provest and Maddie O'Leary were also standouts Well done Girls!

Western Region Dance Festival

On the 18th June, 50 Dance students from Bathurst High Campus performed at the Western Region Dance Festival. The school had 5 items in this festival. Years 9 and 10 Dance elective Performed their contemporary piece – ―Falling‖, The Dance Ensemble performed their Hip Hop fusion piece ―Stronger‖, The Dance Company performed 2 pieces – ―Don‘t Wake Me Up‖ and ―A Star in our Galaxy‖, and the Year 11 Class Performed ―Watching You Leave‖ which opened the Festival.

The students represented our School with great enthusiasm and team work. This was a great performance experience, as many of these students had never performed at a public area before. This is the largest group of students that Bathurst High has ever taken to a Dance festival, which demonstrates the recent growth in our Dance program.

From this festival, our Year 11 students have been selected to perform their item in Sydney as part of the State Dance Festival to be held at the Seymour Centre on the 3rd September.

Preliminary HSC Dance is a shared course taught at Bathurst High Campus in 2013. This means that stu- dents from Kelso High Campus travel to Bathurst High to study this course. HSC dance in 2013 is taught at Kelso High Campus.

The dance group will be performing their item "Watching you leave" and were selected for the State Dance Festival after their excellent performance at the Regional Dance Festival held at the Bathurst Me- morial Entertainment Centre in June. The students have been working very hard on this performance all year and have collaborated really well, especially coming from different campuses. Many of these stu- dents performed in the Schools Spectacular together last year which really helped them bond as a dance ensemble before the start of Year 11.

While in Sydney for the State Dance Festival the group will also be participating in several workshops, hopefully being taught by Courtney Horton, an ex student of Bathurst High Campus who has studied in Miami.

Central West HSC Seminar Day

On the 25th June students from both the Bathurst High and Kelso High campuses of Denison College joined students from ten other Central West high schools participating in a day of revision for their upcoming HSC exams. The key note speaker for the day was Christina Anu, who for the uninitiated, is arguably Australia‘s most successful indigenous performer and one of Australia‘s most popular recording artists. Christina gave an excellent presentation on ―belonging‖, one of the major themes of the HSC English sylla- bus and engaged the students with her story of life in the Torres Strait Islands and her rise to fame in music, theatre and film, while living in the city. Christina also entertained the audience with many traditional songs and her signature hit ―My Island home‖. Jane Sherlock an experienced, enthusiastic and passionate public education speaker and ex-head Teacher English also gave presentations on four aspects of the English course. Excellent presentations were also given by Bathurst High teachers Janine Browning (General Maths), Jacqui

Hood (PDHPE), Jim Browning (Business Studies), Mike Hogan (Chemistry) and Andrew Smith (Music). Students also had the opportunity to go to presentations in a wide range of other subject areas and there were also presentations by Verto, Skilset, Cadia Mines and the Board of Studies.

Thank you to Mrs Kathy Howard and Ms Judith Murphy for looking after students on the day.

A special thank you should go to Jim Browning from Bathurst High and Wendy Murphy from Kelso High for their excellent coordination of the Seminar for all the Central Western schools.
