Page 13 Vale – Terrence John Freebody ? 1923 - 19 July 2012

On the 19th July 2012, QDCC lost one of their favourite sons, when Terry tragically passed away.

Terry was a right handed top order batsman and right arm medium pace bowler. He was a Premiership winning Captain, ACT Captain and a member of Sir Robert Menzies very first Prime Ministers XI.

Terry was arguably one of the finest top order batsman ever to play in the Queanbeyan Baggy Blue cap, his statistics are beyond reproach and stand up against any batsman of any era and rank him in the top few in ‟s history.

He made his debut for the Bluebags in the 1939–40 season at Queanbeyan Park against Manuka at the tender age of 16.

In total he scored 4799 runs at 34.78 in 142 1st grade matches in an era where the ball dominated. He won the Queanbeyan average 9 years running and the ACT batting award 7 times. He also took 108 at 17.15 with a career best of 6/21.

He played with distinction for the ACT and despite the 2nd world war where he served in the Australian Army taking a number of his best years, his records are nothing short of phenomenal.

Terry captained the 1957-58 Premiership Queanbeyan side bringing the trophy to NSW for the first time since the 1939-40 season – 18 long years.

Terry represented ACT regularly in the 1950‟s and captained ACT 1958-60. He played 18 innings at an average of 27.80 with the bat. His batting highlight was 57 in the team‟s total of only 151 against NSW Second XI in January 1950, was vice captain of the Southern team that played MCC at Manuka Oval in December 1950 when he made 21 against the likes of Trevor Bailey, Alex Bedser and Doug Wright.

Page 14

He played in the very first Prime Ministers XI match on 27 October 1951, which was played against the touring West Indian team. Terry (pictured above 2nd row, 5th from the left) was personally selected by the then Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies and played alongside Australian Captain Lindsay Hassett.

Terry‟s funeral was held at St Christopher‟s Cathedral in Manuka on 31 July 2012 and was officiated by retired Bishop Pat Power, Father Tony Frey and Father Peter Day.

The church was packed out with mourners all of whom gathered to celebrate gathered to celebrate the life of the distinguished sporting talent, businessman, and loving father and husband. His two sons, Glenn and Brett, and his brother-in-law Ted Royal, with whom Mr Freebody was extremely close, all spoke in remembrance and celebration of his life.

The pallbearers consisted of his two sons, Glenn and Brett, other family members Josh Royal and Stuart Gervink and Mal Wheeler. He was laid to rest at Gungahlin Cemetery.

Terry is survived by his 2nd wife Lennis, sons Brett and Glenn and daughter Kate.

Page 15 President’s Report

After our all-conquering 2011-12 season, the 2012-13 season was always going to be a hard act to follow. Looking back however, I believe our efforts both on and off the field this season exceeded all expectations. On the field, to lose 8 players from our first grade team the season before and still make semi-finals in all 5 grades was an outstanding achievement for our Club. Congratulations to our premiership winning teams lead by our strong 2nd grade team. Their efforts during the season under captain, Peter Coleborne, were exceptional. Well done also to Michael Frost and the successful 3rd grade 1 day premiership team.

Congratulations to all of our captains this year. I think Jenno, Crossy, Manny, Frosty, Pete and Nuggs did great jobs to get all five teams into the 2-day semi finals. I would also like to wish Nugget, our first grade captain, all the very best in his cricketing journey. Hopefully we‟ll be seeing him in some bushranger gear in the not too distant future.

Off the field, two very exciting events highlighted our season and kept a number of committee members busy over the last 12 months. The opening of our new Cricket Clubhouse was an historic occasion for our Club. I‟m sure everyone will agree with me when I say the building has been a resounding success this year and enabled us to host a number of representative games along with our regular grade fixtures.

Member of Eden Monaro, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly and Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall officially open the Freebody Oval Cricket Pavilion

The Clubhouse will allow us to display our history and provide a sense of club pride in our 150 year history. Our sincere thanks go to the Local Member for Eden Monaro, Dr Mike Kelly for securing the funds for the facility and the Queanbeyan City Council for their efforts in managing the building process. Thanks also to the builders, Beasac Pty Ltd and in particular Graeme Beaver for his cooperation over the 6 month building period. Our patron, Ian McNamee, was instrumental in the entire process and his ongoing support is greatly appreciated.

Page 16 The other highlight for our Club was undoubtedly the 150 year anniversary celebrations, culminating in over 200 past and present club members attending a function in February 2013 in our new Clubhouse to celebrate the landmark. The event was an outstanding success and full credit must go to those involved in organising the event. The highlight of the night was the naming of two further life members of our Club. Congratulations to Lloyd Buckley and Rod Winchester for an honour thoroughly deserved.

The Honour Boards in our clubroom

A big thank you to our curator, Greg Dawes, who has indicated that he may be leaving the role next season. Hopefully we can work something out to keep Greg producing wickets of a high quality for our club but if not I would like to acknowledge his excellent contribution for our club over a long period of time.

Thank you to all of our sponsors for this season. We could not function in the way we have now for a number of years without your support. In particular I‟d like to thank our joint major sponsors, the Kangaroos club and Paul Kelly from Sportslink International. I encourage everyone to get behind and support our sponsors whenever possible.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts of our entire committee this season and others not on the committee that pitched in and helped our club function the way it does. Running a sporting club can be time consuming and sometimes thankless, however we are very fortunate to have people who are willing to help. We could always do with more hands on deck so please think about giving up some of your time and helping out on occasions to assist spreading the ever increasing load.

Finally, we have been very well served over the last 6 years by our current treasurer Gordon Elliott. Gordon has indicated that he‟d like to wind down his involvement in our club but is willing to assist in the handover process next season to the person who will take on this role. Gordon has performed his role in a thoroughly professional manner and has the finances and records of the club in fantastic shape. On behalf of all of our members, thank you Gordon for all of your efforts. Hopefully you will look back in years to come and be proud of the part you played in one of the most exciting eras in our clubs history.

Page 17 In conclusion, I believe the success of our season should not just measured by how many trophies we collect. I think it‟s also about providing an environment for our members that is fun and rewarding and one where our youngsters have the opportunity to learn and grow as cricketers and individuals. I think our club is performing this role…but we can do better.

I look forward to seeing everyone in the new season.

Peter Solway President

Page 18 Secretary’s Report

From many in the club, the 2012-13 season started as a mixture of excitement and apprehension. The excitement was naturally having the cricket pavilion built and at last having a permanent home after nearly 150 years of existence and the apprehension of how we would fair on the field after losing a large portion of our 1st grade players from the past couple of seasons.

Whilst the wash-up from the season sees only three trophies in the cabinet, from an individual perspective it was a very successful season. We had 11 Centuries scored (plus 3 other players dismissed in the nervous 90‟s), 2 players taking 10 wickets in a match, 12 times bowlers took 5 wickets in an innings and 2 bowlers taking hat-trick‟s. Overall, I would be very surprised if this is not a club record.

It was also great to see our youngsters coming to the fore and showing us their potential. It was also great to see that we attracted a number of quality players to the club this year as well notably Josh Connolly, Chris Russo and Josh Corbett to name but a few.

During the season, the club was approached to host a number of representative matches including the Defence Force Carnival, a 4-day Comets match and two weekends of Women‟s National Cricket League matches. I would like to thank the efforts of all those in the club who volunteered to assist with the running of these matches – the Ayre family (Dave, Ingrid and Stephanie), the Gillespie family (Derren and Ratsny), the Solway family (Peter, Julie and Faye), Chris Doyle, Greg Dawes, Steve Cross, Rohan Ditton and everyone else who assisted.

All who participated in these matches had nothing but praise for the efforts of the club and all the volunteers and I am sure we will regularly see the club hosting these types of matches from now on.

Congratulations go to the following players for achieving personal milestones this season.

The past season saw the club continuing to acknowledge the accomplishments of past and present members by bestowing Life Membership on Terry Freebody, Winston McDonald and Graeme Alexander at our AGM. Also at our 150th Anniversary Dinner, the club also bestowed Life Membership upon Lloyd Buckley and Rod Winchester.

This year we welcomed some new faces on the Committee. Joining us was Dave Ayre, Jim Martin, Matt Harding and Vele Dukoski as well as Chris Doyle rejoining the fold.

In regards to the pavilion, it was a very very busy year and a huge learning curve in looking after the building. However, there is still a fair amount of work to be done over the course of the next few years with a number of big ticket items, such as our trophy cabinet, to be done.

The club also introduced a number of new clothing items this season, including a 150th Anniversary Polo Shirt, Hoodie and 1st grade warm up strip. We also had for sale 100 x 150th Anniversary stubby holders, which just about sold out on the re-union night.

Having our own home, also meant we had our own „bar‟ which will be a handy source of revenue in years to come. The next stage of the process will be to give name the bar, the problem is there are so many club legends it will be a difficult task.

As part of our ongoing sponsorship by Baker, Deane and Nutt, we participate in the Annual Red Shield Appeal. This year we did very well in collecting over $1100. The club would like to thank those involved for a great job –

Phil Moore, Steve Cross, Rohan Ditton, the Frost Family (Michael, Sam and Amy plus a few friends), the Gillespie Family (Derren & Ratsny) and the Solway family (Peter, Julie, and Abby).

Besides those acknowledge on the Supporters and Sponsors page, I would like to acknowledge the financial or other support provided by the following business as well:

Frank Wilson’s Solicitors, Andrew Deane Insurance & George and Sylvia Spaseski

I would also like to acknowledge and to thank the work that Andrew Johnston (Queanbeyan Age) does during the season. Andrew ensures that the club is kept at the forefront of sports news each week.

Also helping keep the club in the public domain, I would also like to thank Pete „Nook‟ Newham for allowing me to present the Bluebags Review as part of his weekly sports show on Queanbeyan 96.7 FM.

The Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation Night was again a great night and congratulations go to all the award recipients. I would like to thank Dave Corcoran for taking on the role of Master of Ceremonies. Corcs did a great job and kept things moving all night. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the organising committee of Rohan Ditton, Stephen Cross and Michael Frost. Thanks to all involved.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the ongoing support that is provided to the club from the staff of Queanbeyan City Council. It is great to know that they are always ready to provide assistance whenever it was required.

Page 20

The Future

The future looks good with the club building a solid financial and administrative base, however there are still challenges ahead for which we will need to be prepared.

In regards to the next generation of grade players whilst our policy of youth development is doing us well we may need to be more active in assisting the Junior club attract new players.

We also need to be mindful that many of our players are over 40 and may be looking to either play less or retire so we should be trying to keep those players involved in the club as well as attracting past players back to the club.

Next season we will again be undertaking a minor rebuilding of our 1st grade team as a number of players will be moving on to further their cricketing ambitions. Aaron Ayre has moved to Melbourne and will be linking up with the Essendon club. Chris Russo has moved to to play for Northern Districts and Josh Connolly will be moving to Sydney.

I would like to wish them all the very best in their endeavours.

Finally, next season will see Gordon hand over the reigns as treasurer after over 6 years of excellent service to the club. Gordon and I have built a great working relationship over this time, so even though he won‟t ever be far away, it will still be sad to see him go. All the best mate.

2012/13 again saw the Club enjoying another strong performance from a financial perspective:

Revenues for the year totalled approximately $126,000, which was an increase of approximately $32,000 from the previous year. This was due primarily to the increase in the hosting of ACT representative games, which included regular use of the new pavilion for lunches and player amenity.

Payments of ACTCA grants and representative games revenue totalled approx $40,000. Other major revenues included player fees and clothing sales $17,200, the club's 150th celebrations realised revenue of approximately $14,800, and sponsorship payments of approx of $27,000.

Expenses totalled approximately $115,000 and included: ACTCA ground hire and umpires costs $17,000 Admin costs $31,000 (including rep games costs, and pavilion fit outs refurbishment of $14,000) Clothing $15,000 150th dinner $11,000 Playing equipment $5,000 and Annual Dinner and Presentation night $5,000.

The result was an operating profit of $11,000.

The Club's balance sheet has also shown an improved position with a final position of approximately $55,000 as a net assets position. The club's major assets include the purchase of new site screens and these have been capitalised at a value of $11,600 and cash balances of approx $39,000.

Page 22 150th Anniversary Re-union

Saturday 23 February 2013 will go down as one of the best nights in the club's history as over 200 of the clubs past players and officials (as well as their partners) gathered at the QDCC Pavilion to celebrate the club's sesquicentennial anniversary.

It was great to see so many of the club's living history in attendance. For many of the older brigade, as well as the cricket tragics in the club, having cricket legend Doug Walters in attendance was fantastic. Many took the opportunity to get his autograph as well as getting a photograph of themself with him. Thanks Doug.

Without the involvement of the following people in getting the night up and running and for all the hard work they did on the night (not forgetting over the weekend as well) then we would not have had such a great night.

 Firstly to Michael Frost for all his enthusiasm and hard work leading up the event,  To all the lads who were invaluable in making sure that everyone got a good feed: Luke Dawes, Jay Ludwig, Jeremy Macdonald, Michael Medved, Brad Moore, Alex Page, Lakshmn Shivakkumar and Mark Solway  Dave Ayre who worked tirelessly over the weekend, making sure everything ran smoothly. He also did a great job in organising the raffle on the night,  Stephanie Ayre for coordinating and managing the catering,  Adrian Brunker and his staff for their efforts in providing ample sustenance,  Peta Harding as our official photographer, who was tireless in taking photos throughout the evening,  The bar staff of Jess Dawes, Jess Reid, Cameron Blagdon & Adrian Valeri who did a good job in making sure no one was left thirsty,  Tim Gavel who did an excellent job as our Master of Ceremonies,  Nick and Rob who were our security on the night courtesy of Sean Giddings of SNP Security who donated their services,  Damien Brooks for his efforts in keeping the place clean and tidy,  Gordon and Cath Elliott for being our „bag people‟ in collecting money „at the gate‟,  Finally to everyone who worked behind the scenes leading up and during to the evening.

Page 36 Coaches Report

Despite a sizeable turnover in the playing roster from our previous “season to end all seasons”, the QDCC has enjoyed a terrific 2012/13. Indeed the fact that there was never a misstep in turning out competitive teams across all grades was nothing short of remarkable.

Congratulations to 2nd grade in winning the Campbell Cup as well as the T/20 cup and to 3rd grade for winning their One-day cup. In addition to these noteworthy results, that the club could make the finals in all competitions for all grades was a wonderful effort. This was achieved only through the contribution of every single player who donned the baggy blue throughout the year. Of course, credit for this success should rightly be shared by the club‟s hard-working administrators. The QDCC‟s thoughtful talent identification strategies also played their part.

A further source of satisfaction is the knowledge that there are a number of promising cricketers who‟ll feature prominently in higher graded teams next season. While these players await their opportunity they should continue to hone their skills – no matter who you are, there‟s always something that can be improved or done better!

On a personal note, I would like to record my appreciation for the support of the players and club officials. QDCC has an enviable culture and ethos; the nurturing environment and the willingness of experienced players to mentor younger cricketers is a template for how all clubs should go about building a base for sustained success. I also liked the high rates of attendance at Thursday practice. Putting some “pep into your prep” a couple of days prior to a match always has been and always will be the best way for players to consistently perform well.

While 2012/13 was excellent but I‟ve got a good feeling that 2013/14 can be even better. See you all soon.

Page 37 First Grade Report

After losing 7 regular first graders from last season‟s successful team, it was always going to be a tough year for the 1st grade side. The team was boosted by Josh Connolly coming down from Brisbane, Chris Russo coming across from Tuggeranong and Josh Corbett coming from West‟s. In addition to this the juniors who have been coming through the ranks including Lakshmn Shivakkumar, Mark Solway and Guy Gillespie.

Even though this season was basically a rebuilding process for the club we did managed to qualify for a couple of finals. Firstly the Konica T/20 competition only to be knocked out in the quarter finals by eventual winners Cricket Albury Wodonga on a tough in Albury. We also qualified for the finals of the two day comp but were knocked out by eventual winners West‟s. However, the John Gallop Cup did not go to plan and we missed the semi finals due to some below par performances.

There were many highlights throughout the year including Vele Dukoski's first 5 wicket haul in first grade against Eastlake, Josh Connolly and his 12 wickets for the match against North‟s and Jono Deans amazing knock of 300* in a day against Ginninderra.

Although we had a fairly strong team, we unfortunately suffered injuries at the wrong time of the season and the results that we were wanting simply didn't come. Special thanks has to go to our strong support team who helped with selections, lunches, the ground and everything else that happened throughout the club this year including the 150th anniversary.

I have no doubt that the first grade side will be back and close to the top next year. Enjoy the off season and come back bigger and better next season.

It was an extremely successful season for the Scoobies, winning two competitions and very nearly winning the one-day competition. By making all three grand finals (and winning two), we played every single possible day of cricket that weather allowed. That‟s exhausting enough, but we also had so many absolute nail biters that the joke is I‟m “50 shades of greyer” and I‟m sure I have worn a path into the concrete at a couple of grounds by pacing up and down.

To give some examples: we lost a T20 match from the last ball when Raglan Maddox failed to hit a 3 to win. In the ultimate redemption however, Rags won the T20 semi-final from the last ball, belting it for 4. We lost a one-dayer against Tuggies with 2 balls to spare and we beat ANU from the second last ball with no wickets in hand.

In the ultimate disappointment in the one-day GF, we lost needing their last two wickets with only an over spare. Then in the two-day GF we collapsed to be 8 for 146 (5 runs shy of West‟s 1st Innings of 151). However we were able to post a good 1st Innings lead by numbers 9 (Adrian Brunker – 20), 10 (Alex Page – 55*) and 11 (Matty Grocott – 27) scoring 118 runs for the last 2 wickets against some very aggressive quick bowling.

There were some great performances along the way: Faheyzie‟s blistering 60 off 20 balls in the T20 Semi-Final; Southie‟s 5/29 in the T20 Grand-Final; Balinder‟s maiden century; Corc‟s superb 102 in the two-day Semi-Final; Southie‟s 10 wickets (6/22 & 4/43) in the same match; Rags‟s two-day Grand-Final performances of 76 and 64*; and Balinder‟s 6/54 & 1/15 for the match.

We also saw the massive talents of Matty Grocott and Alex Page with the ball and bat, also Jeremy Macdonald (who efforts were acknowledged by giving him the Captains Award), Phil Moore and Josh Gregory showing great potential.

I‟d like to thank those who stepped up and played some great cricket for 2s, like Rohan Ditton taking 5 catches in the two-day Semi-Final. Also thanks to the likes of Michael Frost, Steve Frost and Matty Cutler (98 on debut, run out by Steve).

It was amazing to have our new pavilion this season and I want to thank everyone involved with making that happen. I‟d also like to thank the committee for all their hard work and Dawesy for his work on the grounds. I look forward to another successful season next year and I hope we can get that elusive Second grade one-day premiership trophy back to the super city of Queanbeyan.

The 2012-2013 ACTCA 3rd grade season was again a very successful and enjoyable year of cricket for the old, the young and the new. Making it to the grand final in the T20, winning the One-Day competition and making the semi-final in the Two-Day premier competition was a great result for everyone that played this season.

The mix of senior players coupled with a number of juniors again proved a successful formula and to Simon Mann, Peter Solway, Stephen Frost and Graeme McLennan the QDCC is indebted to you guys for taking the time to assist with the development of the younger players and bringing them through the grades to be better players.

Highlights for the season were: The magnificent innings by Jordan Hedington to win a memorable match against West‟s at Kaleen when all hope looked gone. The inspirational efforts of Peter Solway, Stephen Frost and Simon Mann with bat or ball during the year to turn matches around or set out victories. The addition of our sub-continent trio – Robin, Vishav and Tinder – they added enormously to the club and we will continue to look to these guys to bring their skills and talent back to the club next season. The emergence of some real talent through the young blokes. Ben Izzard, Jay Ludwig, Lewis McLennan and Jacob Tozer are four of that brigade but are loaded with ability and we should see more of them over the coming years.

Page 43 For his efforts and enthusiasm every week we were proud to give the Captains Award to Michael Medved.

Finally a huge thank you to Steve Cross for his role as Chairman of Selectors, Greg Dawes for another very good year with the wickets and to the Committee for all their hard work during the 2012-2013 cricket season.

Page 44 Fourth Grade Report

Fourth Grade‟s 2012-13 season should be considered a success as the side made it to the semi finals of all three formats of the game. With such a young and inexperienced team to make the semis was a great reward. Unfortunately we came up against sides that had more class and experience and we didn‟t make it to any grand finals.

The season started strangely with the originally appointed Captain, Greg Dawes, being unavailable so I was asked to „fill in‟. Due to Greg‟s other commitments, he stood down and this resulted in me being appointed Captain for the season. I must admit, I actually enjoyed captaining the Fourth Grade team during the season, given the youth of the side, with a few older (not necessarily wiser) players. We had some ups and downs, but I couldn‟t fault the commitment of the playing group. We did generally „Captain by Committee‟ and for that I must thank and recognise the assistance of Crouchy and Matt Harding.

As mentioned we had a very young side with many playing their first season of grade, while continuing with the Junior cricket. Players that took to the field included Wilson Morshead, Joshua Swan, Tyler Van Luin, Brad Moore, Luke Dawes, Sean Baker, Finley Hollyhead and Matthew Donnelly. All players mentioned above had at least one innings or bowling effort that contributed significantly to team success including Wilson‟s maiden grade century, Brad Moore‟s unbeaten 25 to save a match and Finley‟s C & B to win us a match by 2 runs, to name a few.

Graeme Alexander and Vish Thakur with their respective trophies

I can‟t go on without mentioning Vish Thakur batting efforts in scoring 535 runs at an average of 59.33, with a top score of 106*, a remarkable season.

Page 45 The team also had a number of mature debutants and saw the return of some former players. Debutants included David Horsfall, Stephen Moore and returned players including Dom DiCampli and Paul Morshead who managed to stand in the field occasionally. These players also contributed significantly to the team through their individual efforts and enthusiasm.

Even though he missed a number of games through injury and other commitments, I had no hesitation in acknowledging Brad Moore‟s contribution by giving him the Captains Award.

I would like to take the opportunity to those involved in supporting and getting the teams onto the field‟s week in week out. Frosty for his work on the Selection Committee ensuring each grade had full compliments. The work of Dawesy in preparing three wickets pretty much each week and all those wickets for the representative games, a great effort. Lastly the Committee, including the Executive Committee, for all the off-field work that goes into running a Club, especially in seeing to fruition the Pavilion and subsequent running of the facility.

I would also like to thank Peta Harding for being our scorer. Peta has without a doubt the neatest scorebook in 4th grade, if not throughout most grades. Also Peta‟s attention to detail meant that I didn‟t have to worry knowing that the scores were right and that the book adds up.

Lastly, I would like to thank all the players again that played in 4‟s and I would be really pleased to see all players return next season to do it all again.

Page 46 Fifth Grade Report

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Pete Coleborne and his lads for a great double (2 day and T/20 premierships) and commiserations for just missing out on the treble (narrow loss to West‟s in the 1 day final) and to Frostie and the 3rd graders for winning the One-day Cup.

2012/13 was another good season with the team making the grade final for the 3rd consecutive season. Unfortunately 3rd time lucky did not apply and we were well beaten by the North Canberra Gungahlin “Eagles” team.

We had an inconsistent start to the season and at the Xmas break we were sitting outside the top four with a reasonably hard run home in front of us. After the break we started to get some more consistency and managed to beat every side above us. We ended up finishing fourth at the end of the home and away season which considering where we came from was a really good result.

John Fern, Peter Jensen and Jim Martin celebrate their achievements

One of the most pleasing wins of the season was our comprehensive victory over minor premiers West‟s in the semi-final. It was a fantastic effort by our bowlers in particular Troy Drayton and John Fern.

In the Grand final, despite fielding the strongest team possible we did not play all that well and were convincingly beaten. Everyone in the team was bitterly disappointed to lose the GF (particularly in the circumstances that arose from the match) but overall it was a pretty successful season.

We had some really good individual performances during the season especially our bowling with 5 of our bowlers taking 20 wickets or more. One notable performance was by John Fern who took 7 wkts for 7 runs, including a hat-trick.

Hope all our players enjoy their off season and look forward to everyone fronting up again next season.
