Page 13 Vale – Ian Armour 29 May 1934 – 7 August 2016

Ian first played for the Bluebaggers in the late 40’s and made his 1st grade debut on 11th October 1952 against Turner at Reid Oval. He went on to play for the club for over 20 years. Ian took over the 1st grade captaincy from Jack McNamara when he retired in 1967 and captained the team until ongoing injuries took their toll and ended his playing days at the end of the 1970-71 season.

During his time at the club, Ian was encouraged to join the club’s management committee and he served as President from 1967 until he stepped down in 1971.

During his time as President, Ian was instrumental in firstly bringing Mel Johnson to the club and then securing the services of Ray Flockton.

In 1972, to honour his work for the club, Ian was awarded Life Membership.

Ian being awarded Life Membership. Other people in the photo, Col Berry, Alan Davidson & Kevin McCarty

Page 14 Ian was an all-round sportsman and also a champion rugby player. Ian was the Queanbeyan Whites 1st grade captain when they won their very first premiership in 1959. He is probably the only person to be 1st grade captain of both the Whites and the Bluebaggers. Squash, tennis, horse riding and even ten pin bowls were other sporting interests of Ian’s.

After retiring from cricket, lawn bowls became a focus and he became a member of the Canberra City Bowling Club. During his time with the club Ian won every title possible at the club.

Page 15 President’s Report

Well, my first season as President of this great club and I must say I couldn’t be prouder of what we achieved this season. Premierships in the 4th Grade T/20 competition, and the 3rd Grade 1 Day & 2 Day competitions. 3rd Grade lost the T/20 Final – their first Grand Final loss in 3 years – and 5th Grade lost the Grand Final after finishing minor premiers. 2nd Grade was undefeated in the regular season but unfortunately fell over at the last couple of hurdles. While 1st Grade had a mixed season, winning their fair share of games with a relatively young side, just not quite at the level to play semi-final cricket – no doubt they’ve improved as a unit and will push on for a better season next year.

Without a doubt our greatest achievement this season was winning the Club Championship, last won in 2009/10. Particularly for this season after increasing the points awarded for the Women’s competition, it shows just how dominant we were through the Grades. Credit must go to Darren & Jeremy in leading 2nd Grade and Solid in 3rd Grade to undefeated seasons, an outstanding effort in the three formats of the game, while 4th and 5th Grade only lost a couple of games each.

A big thanks to our coaching staff led by Head Coach Peter Solway running the Thursday sessions, and Fron & Crouchy running Tuesdays. We’ve had a good coaching structure the past few years but it seemed to kick up a gear this season, no doubt playing a big part in the consistent performances seen across the grades.

I really believe we’ve got the depth of talent across all grades to be able to compete for the Club Championship for the next few years. Our home grown juniors throughout the grades had outstanding seasons and will push for higher honours next season, and our senior players continue to lead and motivate the younger guys show them how much it means to us to play for the Bluebags.

We continue to lead the ACT clubs in junior player development, as we have done for the past 10 or more years. I’ve spoken to numerous club representatives and they are all envious of our ability to not only identify and develop our talented juniors, but just as importantly retain our senior experienced players to provide the vital guidance required to transition the young kids into grade cricket.

Off the field the club continues to prosper, with a dedicated committee focused on continual improvement to ensure we remain the best club in the region to play cricket. Our regular meetings and emails ensure everything runs smoothly for the season, and any problems are solved promptly. We certainly don’t agree on all points all the time and have plenty of good debates throughout the year, but I think that is what makes ours such a strong and active committee – we are all passionate about the Queanbeyan District Cricket Club and we all want to the club to continue to improve – a strong, diverse committee ensures this.

I personally thank all the current committee members, and look forward to all continuing to help this great club in the future:

Vice Presidents Adrian Brunker & Stephen Cross, Treasurer Matt Harding, our evergreen Secretary Ron Bates, and committee men Mr Chris Doyle, Mr Stephen Frost, Mr Graham Hannaford, Mr Dave Horsfall, Mr Stephen Moore, Mr Josh Sands, Mr Peter Solway, Mr Darren Southwell.

Page 16 I’ll throw Greg Dawes in there as well, he started the season on the committee, but of course he’s better known as the number one curator in NSW, just ask him he’ll tell you. But seriously, Dawesy continues to produce arguably the best in the region and we are lucky to have him. His season started way back in early September when our friends from Manly came to Queanbeyan for preseason trials, right through to the grand finals in March. Also need to thanks Batesy, Fron & Nick for their work on the Brad Haddin Oval .

It seems an age ago now where we’d either be huddled in the Freebody 1 change rooms, or sharing the shade with the ants on Freebody 2. It’s hard to imagine what the club would be like if we didn’t have the Pavilion now, as a father of 2 young kids it’s great being able to them along for the day knowing they’ll be safe and happy either running around, playing Ping-Pong or watching TV – something that wasn’t possible before.

What also wasn’t possible was the ability to host various representative matches & carnivals, this season again saw us hosting Manly, UNSW, Monash Tigers & The Comets in some preseason trials, the Defence Force, the U/15 Female nationals, U/12 schools nationals, as well as numerous junior comets and senior comets trials. A massive thanks to everyone who volunteered their time in making these events possible, particularly Cath Elliott & Fay Solway for leading the catering efforts – it’s a huge logistical challenge running these carnivals but the benefits to the club make it well worth the effort.

There are further improvements in the pipeline for the pavilion, thanks to the Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council we received funding for two tower clocks on the centre turrets of the building – these were recently installed and look sensational. We’ve also got funding to build some steps from the pavilion onto both ovals to replace the temporary turf paths.

I’d to thank all of our sponsors for their ongoing support, in particular the Queanbeyan Kangaroos Club who have been long time financial partners of the QDCC. The club wouldn’t survive without our generous sponsors and we urge all our members to support them whenever they can. We’re always on the lookout for new sponsors so if you any businesses that may be interested please get in touch.

Last but not least I need to thank my beautiful wife Angela for her support throughout the season. This role takes up a lot of time with the various meetings etc, not to mention the days spent on the field – or in the bar. No doubt getting the girls out of the house for a few hours on Saturdays helps my cause.

Rohan Ditton President

Page 17 Secretary’s Report

Another season done and dusted. It doesn’t seem like 12 months ago, I was in the process of writing my report. Come to think of it, it doesn’t seem like 10 years ago when I compiled my first Annual Report for the club. Some days I curse time for getting past me so easy.

The season started with Rohan Ditton taking over the reins from Peter Solway as club President. We also welcomed back to the committee Chris Doyle, Greg Dawes and Graham Hannaford. Also joining the committee were Josh Sands and Dave Horsfall

The club had some early success with 4th grade winning the T20 cup, unfortunately 3rd grade’s epic run came to an end with a comprehensive defeat in their T20 cup final.

We also welcome some new players as well as welcoming back a few others. Joining the club this year was Chris Gane from Bankstown, Stuart Bridgen from Northies, Brad Falkenberg from ANU and a couple of lads from Grenfell, Hamish and Zach Starr. We also welcomed a young bloke from Sydney, Tom Phelps and his dad Matt, was interested in playing as well. Well it turns out that Matt is a former 1st class cricketer with NSW, what a pick up.

We also had quite a few players earn their baggy blue this year by making their first grade debut in the two day competition – Chris Gane, Hamish Starr, Zach Starr, Stuart Bridgen, Sid Girish and Phil Moore.

This season we again proved that we are the ‘best’ cricket club in the ACT. While the number of trophies actually won was down on previous seasons, our results meant that we won the coveted the club championship trophy - TE Rolf Cup. This was despite the fact that we don’t have a women’s team (at the moment) and the additional handicap of changing the club championship weightings which greatly favoured those clubs with women’s teams.

Some of the highlights from the season were:  2nd grade setting a club and association record for a one-day match scoring 4/400 against Northies  Also in that match, Josh Gregory (104), Alex Page (117) and Brad Falkenberg (118 no) all scored their maiden tons for the club.  3rd grade also set a club and association record scoring 501 in the two day semi-final  3rd grade setting another association record by winning their 5th consecutive One-day competition. They also backed this up by winning their 3rd consecutive Two-day competition.  5th grade finishing Minor Premiers (4th consecutive season) and but unfortunately could not maintain the momentum and finished up as runners up.  Greybaggers finishing runners up in the inaugural Over 50s Competition.  The high standard of batting during the season, with 15 centuries with 5 of them passing 150 including a top score of 213 no.  Great bowling with 11 ‘Five fa’.

A number of players achieved milestones this year including maiden centuries and first ‘five fa’.

Batsmen – Matt Phelps, Brad Falkenberg, Brad Moore, Alex Page, Josh Gregory, Zac Starr and Abhinash Kumar.

Page 18 For the bowlers – Michael Stachow, Oliver Cheatle, Micah Manners, Glenn Flatley and Zac Starr all bagged their first 5 fa.

I would also like to congratulate the following players for achieving personal milestones this season. This season saw us host our first International match when the visiting England Over 60s team took on an ACT Over 60s team in a one-day match on Neil Bulger Oval. The match featured a number of Bluebaggers – Neil Bulger, Vince Bulger & James Martin.

The match was played in a very competitive but in the right spirit and the English won out on the day. After the match, the teams enjoyed a light supper and a drink or two. However the English lads were full of praise for the club’s hospitality and gave a hearty 3 cheers for the Bluebaggers.

Page 19 During the season was a special one for a former Bluebag with the re-naming of Town Park Oval as Brad Haddin Oval.

Brad is pictured here with his wife Karina and family

Brad played junior cricket for the club and also played a number of matches in the seniors before being spirited away to ANU.

I would like to acknowledge the ongoing support that is provided to the club Council Administrator Tim Overall (Former Queanbeyan Mayor) and from the staff of Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council. It is great to know that they are always ready to provide assistance whenever it was required.

Off Field As usual I would like to start by thanking our "Ladies Auxiliary", particularly Julie Solway and Ratsny Gillespie for the work they do around the club. I know that the 1st grade lads love the lunches they put together for every home game. I would also like to thank Cath Elliott and Faye Solway for looking after the pavilion cleaning. The ladies did a great job.

Also helping keep the club in the public domain, I would also like to thank Pete ‘Nook’ Newham for allowing me to present the Bluebags Review as part of the weekly sports show on Queanbeyan 96.7 FM every Friday evening.

The Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation Night was again a great night and congratulations go to all the award recipients. I would like to thank Josh Sands for the fantastic job he did as Master of Ceremonies on the night. I would like to thank Cr Tim Overall, Queanbeyan Mayor and Dr Mike Kelly, Member for Eden-Monaro for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend. Thanks also to Winston and Sue McDonald for travelling down as well. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the organising committee of Rohan Ditton and Michael Frost. Thanks to all involved.

The club’s Annual Golf Day was another success with good numbers in attendance. To this end I would like to thank on behalf of the committee the volunteers that made is such a good day – Derren Gillespie, Josh Sands, Darren Southwell, Paul Morshead, Sam Frost and Jack Manners. Page 20

The Future I would like to reiterate the thoughts from last year’s report in that I continue to see a prosperous future for the club on the field with a number of youngsters in the lower grades as well as a good number of juniors ready to take that next step on their path to first grade. There are also good signs from a committee perspective with a number of the next generation wanting to get involved with running the club.

While first grade missed out on all semis this season (first time since 2006) the abundance of talent in the lower grades will surely see the team being more competitive next season and will surely add to the silverware in our trophy cabinet.

The 16/17 season was year of development for first grade with moments of success and some tough losses. The first grade squad had some movement from the previous season with 15/16 Mark Higgs medallist Henry Hunt moving to Sydney to further his cricket career while Mick Curtale and Kel Evans had a year off the weekly commute to Canberra. Despite these losses the squad also had some handy additions in Chris Gane, Hamish Starr and Zach Starr.

It was a rusty start to the season in the Konica-Minolta T20 competition. Queanbeyan’s first game was a loss against Tuggeranong that went down to the last over. This loss ended up being the difference to gaining a spot in the semi-finals. In the second match the team had a good win against Eastlake but then were outplayed by Weston Creek in the final round match.

The team then turned their focus to the One Day competition and they started well with wins against North Canberra and Eastlake. The boys were then lucky enough to play round 3 under lights at Manuka against rivals Weston Creek. Unfortunately things didn’t quite go to plan with Creek piling on 3/319 and Queanbeyan all out for131. Although it was a disappointing loss the boys turned it around the following week against Wests.

However, this would be Queanbeyan’s last One Day win with consecutive losses to ANU, Tuggeranong and Ginninderra. Once again, the team was agonisingly close to a finals birth, chasing Ginninderra’s score of 234 in the last round and falling 3 runs short. A win would have guaranteed fourth spot.

There were some strong individual performances up until this point in the season with skipper Vele Dukoski sitting close to leading run scorer in the comp and taking wickets. Mark Solway and Guy Gillespie were also among the leading wicket takers.

Two Day Cricket was the final challenge for the boys to tackle and this was another comp of highs and lows. The team had some good wins chasing 334 against Norths in round 1 and posted 350 + scores against Eastlake and Weston Creek thanks to some good days with the bat.

Unfortunately, we lacked consistency at times and struggled to string together 6 good sessions, however, it was a great season of development with everyone contributing at different times. The team also did enough to be in the hunt for finals going into the final round but was again unlucky to lose a nail biter to Ginninderra.

On the whole it was a very enjoyable season and the team definitely gave their all week in week out. Finishing 5th in each comp was disappointing, however, first grades competitive season definitely contributed to Queanbeyan’s club championship win.

Looking ahead to the 2017/18 season it looks very positive with the boys putting in the hard work at training to get back to playing finals cricket.

Page 34 Second Grade Report (Minor Premiers OD & TD)

2016/17 season for second grade kicked off with T/20's and first game didn't go that well considering we didn't get much opportunity to train due a wet pre-season September. The next two games we were a lot better and qualified for the finals, unfortunately we didn't play our best cricket and we lost.

The one-day competition started with a 240 run win for us as we batted first and posted 3/400 an amazing effort with Josh Gregory, Brad Falkenberg and Alex Page scoring 100's, we then went through the next 6 games undefeated.

In the semi-final against ANU we batted first and after a steady start we lost 4 quick wickets putting us 6/130 with 15 overs remaining the tail wagged and another century to Brad Falkenberg we posted a respectable 230. When it came our turn to field we were quietly confident on bowling them out cheaply but they came out hard and with nothing to lose belted us around the park for ten overs and they got to 100 only 1 wicket down, it wasn’t that we were bowling poorly, it was just some really good batting. After the drinks break we got a second wicket then few overs later picked up two more. At the last drinks break, with the score at 4/160, we spoke about the need to restrict runs and bowl on side of the wicket. This worked and we ended up bowling them out with 15 runs to spare, so we were off to the grand- final.

This is a grand final I and the boy's would like to forget about quickly. Unfortunately we lost the toss and bowled first. The first 6 overs went to plan then the wheels kind of fell off with 9 catches dropped and our bowlers could not bowl on one side of the wicket. Instead of bowling them out for 140 they finished with 210. The misfortune continued on with our batting losing quick wickets early from which we didn't recover and were bowled out for 150. A very big disappointment after all the effort we put in to gets us to the grand-final, have won all 8 one- day matches, oh well it wasn’t to be our year.

The two-dayers started with a win for us an outright victory over north Canberra Gungahlin which was an outstanding effort from everyone, with Stuart Brigden getting 84 in the first innings and a quick fire 38 in the second. Every bowler contributed and special mention to young Angus Jones bowling outstanding without much luck and limited overs because of his age. Then with the rest of the round games we had two draws and another outright victory and two wins and going into the finals. In the semi we were at home to Tuggeranong and again not quite our best game. Won the toss and batted and a pretty flat Freebody deck, but we lost a couple of early wickets but Josh was solid at the top of the order with 95 and along with Jay (67) gave is a competitive score of 238. Our bowlers tried their hearts out but some stubborn lower order resistance from Tuggeranong saw them pass our score 8 wickets down.

It was a good but also disappointing season getting so close in all formats bit just missing out, and I have no doubt the boy's will be bigger and more determined next season.

Darren Southwell for QDCC bluebags see you next season.

The 3rd Grade team continued its dominance of this competition by winning 2 of the 3 trophies on offer. The only blemish came in the final of the T20 competition at Manuka when a strong Wests outfit proved too good on the day. From that point, the team remained undefeated for the remainder of the season defeating Wests in the 1 day competition final and Norths in the premier 2 day competition.

Congratulations to all 34 players who took the field for 3rd grade this season. We had a solid core of 8 players who played 10 games or more for the season. Like past years, the emphasis on our team was to continue to develop young talent to prepare them to play higher level cricket in the years to come. An example of this was the first grade debuts this season of Jack Allen and Sid Girish who both started the season in 3rd grade. Other youngsters who performed well throughout the season included Tom Phelps, Oliver Hall and Tristan Klower. To complement the youngsters we have some very loyal and dedicated elder statesman blended with some young adult cricketers who continue to improve their skills.

The success of the team was built on solid contributions right across the board along with some outstanding individual efforts. The team spirit in the squad was excellent and everyone enjoyed each other’s company and successes over the season.

With the bat this season we had 8 players score over 200 runs for the season. Leading the way was former NSW cricketer, Mathew Phelps. Our City is extremely lucky to have Mathew involved with our club and his input and experience he is able to offer our group is invaluable. A couple of Matty’s knocks were awesome so hopefully the boys took something away from seeing a gun cricketer go about his role. Solid seasons were also had by Zach Starr, David Horsfall, Adrian Brunker and Abhinash Kumar, including his maiden century for the club against ANU (an excellent achievement for a 15 year old!). Brad Moore also scored his maiden grade century in what was certainly the highlight of his short career.

The bowling attack was led by Zac Starr until he moved up the grades and Abhinash Kumar who is an outstanding all round prospect for the club. In the spinning department, Jack Allen, Tristan Klower and Michael Stachow all had excellent seasons. Jack and Tristan each took 26 wickets and “Stach” chipped in with 19.

A big thank you to our curator, Greg Dawes, for the excellent wickets we get to play on each week. They are without doubt the best wickets to play on every week and the best wickets and outfields for youngsters to learn how to play the game. Thanks also to Michael Frost and Adrian Brunker for their efforts in ensuring we had a full team on the paddock every week.

The 2016-17 season was a tale of many parts for the Queanbeyan 4th grade side. As we reflect back on the year, winning the T20 premiership, making the semis of the one-dayers and making the grand-final of the premier competition, it does appear to be a very successful season. It was a year however, when a clean sweep could have been there to celebrate and all the players in the 4ths would probably feel like we under achieved.

The season started well and with Michael Gilshenan, arguably the best 4th grader for many years, dominating the competition the 4th grade machine rolled through into Xmas. The T20 trophy was in the cabinet, Jenno was taking wickets, Ditts was clearing pickets and the Pom had that hat trick gleam. We had a few young blokes learning their craft and the beers tasted really nice after each match.

We added a spritely Glenn Flatley to our ranks in 16-17 and he proved a valuable asset in the middle order. Crossy was hitting them nicely and Micah was in red hot form. We also added the wily veteran, Des Bush, who was a great bloke to have around the group. After Xmas Jack Manners and Sam Frost played full time and both young blokes are stars for the future, Tom Christou took on the frontline opening bowler role and did a sterling job and Ollie Hall joined us for the finals and he also is destined for bigger and better things.

Then disaster! Not to put too much emphasis on it but the back injury to Gilly rocked the team. He had 580 runs and taken 20 wickets just to Xmas and a bumper season was on the cards. Our form dropped slightly after Gilly was unable to play however, our effort and the camaraderie was still brilliant.

Page 40

Throughout the year, all players tried hard and we certainly gave it our best shot. Bringing 4-5 young players through and exposing them to hard grade cricket will be beneficial to them going forward and the club is looking exciting for next season and beyond.

Many thanks to the Committee very well led by Ditts, Crossy, Ronnie and Matty and a huge thank you to Peter Solway for his coaching and guidance. Dawsey’s contribution in preparing our grounds, and to have them rated as the very best in the competition, is paramount to the club’s on-going success and we all thank him very much! Brunks was also a central figure for the club as chairman of selectors and his friendship and support was very much appreciated.

Finally, we wish Gilly and Evie all the best in their big move up north and we look forward to the 2017-18 season as we try and get a few more trophies into our cabinet and bring a few more youngsters through into Grade cricket!

We were again the dominant side for the whole season and we finished the home and away rounds as the minor premiers for the 4th year in a row, playing in our 6th grand final out of the last 7. Unfortunately we went down in the final in a close game to North’s.

We started the season strongly and only lost one game all season to North’s and I was involved in my first ever tie against Creek. These were the only blemishes on our season (other than a few washouts) on our way to the Final.

The team was strong in all facets of the game throughout the season, performing consistently week in week out. We won a lot of games by fighting hard with the bat and ball. It was an otherwise successful year for our side. I was proud of the way we all performed as a team. Unfortunately the consistency we showed all season went out the window in the final.

This season we had a couple of new faces in Daniel Clugston and Tony Askins providing us with another great bowling option and top order batsmen. These guys provided us with an edge over a lot of other teams in the competition. Young Mitch Fern took a position in the team for the first time (after filling in for previous seasons), becoming our leading wicket taker and taking a hat trick. After losing Howie as our keeper early in the season we had youngster Eli Patterson fill in. It was a great learning experience for him until Tony took over late in the season as players returned from injury.

Due to the dominance and consistent performance of the side it became difficult to select a team at the pointy end of the season. We regularly had 15-16 guys to fit into 12, players were stood down for varying reasons and most took it well. The last couple of months of the season were personally challenging in putting a side together and I think it took a toll on my game, which I believe I have learnt from. Page 42

I would like to thank Brunks and the other selectors (Frosty and Sol) for their support at the selection table. I’d also like to thank them for the opportunities given to me during the season and for having me as captain of a side in this great club.

Over all it was an enjoyable and successful season (despite losing the final). I hope everyone returns for another season and we continue to improve and go one better in Season 2016/17.

Cheers Aaron Thorn

This year saw the inaugural season of the Ron Axelby shield for Over 50s. Despite a number of hiccups and issues with the weather, we were able to play most matches and finished the season in second place with 4 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw.

There were a number of good performances during the season, especially Steve Moore who was steady as a rock at the top of the order. Jimmy, Lawrie and Ferny regularly contributed be it with the bat or ball.

All matches were played in the right spirit and at the end of the day, it didn’t matter who won or lost when you were sharing a beer with the members of the opposition after the match.

I would really like to thank all the lads for being part of the team and hope to see you all back in the “Grey” next season.
