CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2016-17 As I write these words, the pay dispute between Cricket Australia and our first-class players remains unresolved. How deep is the division an outsider cannot tell. These are troubling times for cricket in a world in which politics, including Australia, is on a dangerous poise. I lived through the World Series schism of 1977-80. I have read all that I can about the non- selection of the Big Six for the tour of England in 1912. The finest Australian players, including Victor Trumper, were omitted from the touring party. World Series shattered all my certainties about cricket. I remember so clearly the final stages of the Centenary Test in March 1977. Cricket seemed perfect and unchanging that afternoon. Within six months all was on its head and remained upside down for three long years across winter and summer. Compiling these words has been delayed in part by following development, hoping for a breakthrough in negotiations. I remain hopeful. I do note that Cricket Australia has planted a flag in the field about more funds for cricket below. Commentary has noted the parlous state of wickets, fields of play and general facilities below grade. The Country has been cited as particularly poor in the facilities available. Cricket is but one expression of leisure in the Australian summer. Local government authorities have a great many more demands than the 1930s when football codes ruled in winter and cricket had summer to itself. Organised, competitive sport was mainly for men and boys then. Not now. The political position of cricket has declined over the century and more past. We do not now see premiers, prime ministers and ministers serving on the committees of local cricket clubs and assuming positions of leadership at a state level. Kevin Greene of St George DCC is a throwback to another era. I know of no other like him. The state of fields is a concern to all affiliates in the Zone. Good turf wickets and wicket squares are a rarity in much of the Zone. I believe that we must all seek through quiet agitation a greater allocation of resources by local councils to creating and curating turf wickets. Cricket NSW may be able to directly subsidise councils seeking to help cricket. It will certainly assist if the slice of the pie from international cricket is shared more fairly with the creators of most of that pie - NSW and Victoria. The Zone Board and the Executive of the Zone rely on accurate reports from delegates representing district associations to know what is happening beyond where we live. The Zone can assist the advancement of cricket by offering good governance at all times. One happy development has been the reduction in disputes that reach the Zone by way of appeal. The commissioner system is working well, especially when the local commissioner seeks to bring the parties together by way of dialogue rather than formal hearings at which evidence is presented and challenged. Distances travelled by all delegates is formidable. The Zone is a big expanse. I am grateful that most associations take seriously the need to be represented at meetings. Present boundaries make no great sense. Efforts to effect a revision of boundaries so that the Highlands and Shoalhaven amalgamate with the Illawarra are the other side of glacial. Two compact zones, exclusive of the Federal Territory, make so much more sense organisationally. District competitions will continue as before. The Chairman presides at meetings and is available for the Administrator to consult. The Administrator is the driver of the Zone. Graham Lowbridge had to meet a formidable standard when he took over the duties of Administrator. His stipend and expenses are no more than defraying of the sacrifices incurred on family time and his business interests. Rodney Cavalier 4 | Page Southern Zone Cricket Inc. ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT 2016-17 In my first year as Administrator, the learning curve has been steep and I sincerely thank everyone for their patience as I work out what goes where. I take much pleasure in presenting the 18th annual report including financial statements and year book. The cover page includes a photo of Kaleb Phillips who was selected in the NSW/ACT Country team to play in the Australian U17 National Championships in Brisbane. We tasted success with our U19 Country Colts team and were unlucky to not make it all the way in the U14’s Kookaburra Cup competition, playing out an exciting tie with Central Northern and only going down to eventual winners Illawarra by a few runs. Bowral Cricket Club did the Zone proud by winning the McDonalds Country Plate in Grafton, comfortably besting Yass by 30 odd runs. South East made it two in a row for the Burns Cup and our Bradman Cup and Country Championship teams played well to close of a competitive season. As a Zone, we capped off a successful year with a credible second place to North Coast by only one point. We continue to produce strong representative players at the Country Cricket level and higher and as a region, can be proud of what we have achieved. They include the Executive members of the Committee - Rodney Cavalier, Gary Mortimer, John Bramley, Boyd Brennan and Graeme Creighton. Paul Brockley, Greg McClay and Nicola Browne our shared Regional Cricket Managers, Michael O’Rourke the Zone Academy Coach and all the coaches who assisted during the off-season programs and throughout the year. Kyle Piper from Cricket ACT, Norm Stanton and Lachlan Walker from the SZ Umpires Association, scorers, bus drivers and selectors and finally, all Association representatives - the delegates, umpires, coaches and managers, curators, scorers and parents that continue to offer their valuable time and commitment. Our deepest thanks are extended to NSWCCA and NSWCA for their continuing support of the Zone, through the provision of coaching and financial resources and other assistance. Mr Andrew Jones, CEO, John Warne, Cricket NSW and of course Mr Bruce Whitehouse, Country Programs Manager. Thanks also to Ian Hog, Chairman Country Cricket for his valued continued support to Southern Zone cricket. With the MOU yet to be finalised, the upcoming boundary review, change in junior playing conditions and so on, we are yet again in a state of flux. Such developments continue to have an impact on our Zone and I encourage all members to look with positivity into the future. Anything else will limit how we support our great game across the region.
