The second half of the season was particularly wet and it’s a credit to the local curators and club groundsman that cricket was able to be played to the extent that we did. Merewether Cricket Club became the first club to win the triple crown in first grade having success in T20, 50 overs and the Major Premiership finals. They also won the Club Championship and were finalists in the State SCG Cup. They have been the benchmark club in Newcastle cricket for 10 years and their success can be attributed to two main factors – an extremely well run club off the field and a cricket team built around Simon Moore, the most dominant Newcastle cricket player of his generation.

On a representative level it wasn’t one of Newcastle more memorable years. Both the Colts and Senior carnivals were rain affected and Newcastle did not make the final of either carnival. We also had no success in the Bradman & Kookaburra Cups and the Under 17 NSW Country carnival. Despite our disappointing rep Newcastle Representative Cricketer of the Year Andrew Maher celebrates a during the season, many local players were selected to Country Championships in November 2011 represent at higher levels – NSW Country, Australian Country, and ACT Comets. Our link with the ACT continues to provide new opportunities to Newcastle players. Special mention should be made of Andrew Maher from Hamilton-Wickham who was the leading wicket taker in the national Futures League competition whilst playing with ACT Comets. Greg Geise announced his retirement as Representative Coach at the end of the season. Greg is held in high esteem by all the players he has coached and should be congratulated for his contribution to Newcastle cricket.

One of the focal points of the current NDCA Management Committee is to provide higher levels of representative cricket to our local players beyond the NSW Country program. This season we were fortunate to be scheduled a game against the NSW 2nd XI team. Although we were defeated, it provided a fantastic opportunity for local cricketers to compete against some of the best players in NSW as well as perform in front of State selectors. At the time of writing, we are in negotiations with the Grade Association and hope to be accepted into the SCA T20 competition in the near future.

Season 2011-12 saw the appointment of two new NDCA Patrons – Andrew Cornwell and Tim Owen. They have already shown an enthusiasm for local cricket and I would like to thank them for their assistance. I would like to thank the media for their continued support of Newcastle cricket – Josh Leeson from the Newcastle Herald, Mitch Hughes from NBN TV and Craig Hamilton from ABC Radio. I would also like the thank our major sponsors – CBA, Newcastle Herald, South Leagues Club, Kingsgrove Sports and Kookaburra. Also, congratulations to Rob Faraday-Bensley and the DeCourcy Club committee for their support of Newcastle cricket. This years finals luncheon with special guests Mark Taylor and Michael Slater attracted almost 400 guests and has become the major social event on the cricket calendar.

In conclusion, I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their support and guidance and look forward to a hopefully much drier season 2012-13.

P H (Paul) Marjoribanks Chairman, NDCA 4 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 Secretary’s Report The Committee of Management of the Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) has much pleasure in presenting the 123rd Annual Report covering the 2011/2012 season.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) in August 2012 saw one change to the makeup of the management committee for season 2011/2012. Steve Roxby joined the Committee replacing NDCA life member Neil McDonald who did not seek re-election. Paul Robertson moved into the position of Financial Controller/Treasurer of the Association.

The Management Committee appointed the following persons as Chairman of sub committees for season 2011/2012:  Appeals - Peter Owens  Judicary - Paul Robertson  Selection - Philip Stanbridge  Fixtures - Joseph Wenta  Umpires Appointments - Jerry Tombleson

The NDCA Website (www.ndca.asn.au) again this past season proved to be a major cricket followers of the local competition with the number of visitors for the site increasing from the previous season by 30%. The Annual Presentation evening was attended by all clubs, however overall attendance was disappointing. The Committee is considering various options for the coming season.

The Newcastle District Cricket ’s Association (NDCUA) continued to supply as many umpires as possible to Saturday grade fixtures. Numbers increased slightly with new members taking to the field. Season 2012/2013 will see the fruits of a recent off season campaign with hopes of at least ten new umpires taking to the field.

Cricket New South Wales (CNSW) and Country Cricket New South Wales (CCNSW) are thanked for their support of Newcastle cricket. Newcastle City Council (NCC) and Lake Macquarie City Council are thanked for providing many grounds available to allow competitions to proceed smoothly throughout each season.

During the season the Management Committee addressed the following issues:  Sponsorship  Rules of Competition  Representative competition NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 5  Structure of the Grade competition  Format of Presentation evening

Personal thanks are extended to all members of management and members of the sub committees who give up their time freely to assist in the running of the competition. Grade/Association Secretaries are also thanked for giving up their time voluntarily to assist their respective clubs and the NDCA as a whole.

6 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 Obituaries

Harold “Doc” Haslam (1922-2011) Harold ‘‘Doc’’ Haslam was an outstanding wicketkeeper-batsman who played First Grade in Newcastle for more than 30 years. Although considered to be amongst the finest of ‘keepers, Doc’s big hitting was also a feature of his game. Whilst playing for Hamilton, he scored 50 runs in 26 minutes against Stockton, his maiden first grade century also coming against Stockton in just 49 minutes. That innings included some thirteen 4s and five 6s, 82 of his final score of 101 coming by way of boundaries. Not only a members of the Hamilton-Wickham team that won six successive first-grade premierships in the early 1950s, Harold played in the 1960s for Newcastle City, making a comeback at the age of 51. This part of his career was also a success, with Newcastle City amongst the strongest teams in the District, claiming both First Grade Premierships and Final wins. Harold was a vital contributor to the team, taking eight dismissals in the 1966-67 final against Waratah-Mayfield.

Patrick O’Rourke (1985-2012) Patrick O'Rourke was captain of the Stockton 2nd grade side that won the Final against Charlestown in season 2011/2012, taking a match winning 5/36. Pat played with his brothers, Rob and Andy in that side and they all played a major role in the team’s successful season. In all he played 77 games for Stockton in all grades, scoring 977 runs at an average of 20.35, with a highest score of 119 coming against Waratah-Mayfield in 2nd grade. He took 140 at an average of 19.14, with best figures of 6/15 v Newcastle City in 2nd grade. Pat’s best performance in 1st grade was 5/52 (including a hat-trick) against Wallsend in season 2009/10. Pat was also a member of the Newcastle Senior Representative squad in that season.

NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 7 Cricket Development Manager Report – Newcastle EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2011/12 season presented various challenges in particular the consistent wet weather which was very frustrating for cricketers and administrators alike. But despite the weather patterns our region achieved an outstanding season which is a testament to the professionalism and hard work which is a pleasure to be associated with. Cricket NSW would also like to thank our Zone Administrators, Aidan Cuddington (Central Coast) and Royce McCormack (Newcastle), for their tremendous work and professionalism, and all Association and Club secretaries who offer valuable support and assistance that help make our game so amazing and unique.

The Newcastle/Central Coast Region welcomed Cricket employee Matthew Williams (Participation growth Officer) to the team for 2011/12, with his focus to increase participation throughout the 5-12 year age bracket in the Milo in2CRICKET Programs. Our success in this segment was attributed by a large investment into Milo in2CRICKET Programs within the school setting and also targeted support plans for clubs and their in2CRICKET Centres. Overall our participation grew by 23.32%; which was the largest single growth number across the state.

Junior Club Cricket in both associations lost both numbers of teams and consequently players in traditional club cricket. These drops occurred in the key age brackets of participants coming in to Club Cricket at 8 - 10 years old and Junior Club Cricketers at 13 and 14 Years old. However, both associations implemented mid-week competitions, which saw 379 more participants to the game. With the success of the inaugural year of the KFC Big Bash, this further highlights the need to incorporate the shorter formats in to Junior Competition structures to engage current and potential players.

Coaches across the region were provided with various opportunities to learn from past heroes of our game. The Central Coast was provided with sessions from former New Zealand Test Opening Batsmen Bruce Edgar and Mark Atkinson and Newcastle had current NSW Breakers Coach Neil McDonald and Coach Educator David Drew. The Newcastle Cricket Academy (formerly, Emerging Blues) were also treated to a special visit from NSW Speed Blitz Blues player Stephen O’Keefe. These were well supported by our volunteers which will ensure they continue in to the future.

Following the success of this season, the Cricket NSW Board approved the redistribution of this region splitting it up in to two separate entities, Central Coast and Hunter (incorporating Maitland, Port Stephens, Upper Hunter and Newcastle). Moving forward this looks to be quite an exciting time for both regions and we anticipate that with the extra allocation of resources into these areas will dramatically increase cricket in the area in the years to come.

F N (Francis) Walsh Regional Cricket Manager, Newcastle-Central Coast

8 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 Representative Cricket 2011-2012 Newcastle v ACT The Senior Representative squad again commenced the season in early September, with the NDCA hosting the ACT Comets for two pre-season matches. The Saturday fixture featured an NDCA Senior Representative team, competing against several of the Comets leading players. In the Sunday T20 fixture, Newcastle’s leading junior cricketers had the opportunity to display their skills and press their claims for inclusion in various NDCA and Cricket ACT Representative teams. The NDCA greatly appreciates the assistance of Tom Anderson and the Charlestown club in hosting these fixtures at Kahibah Oval, and Kathleen Pink and Paul Wenta who shared scoring duties over the course of the weekend.

Saturday 17 September 2011 Newcastle v ACT – 50 Over Match Kahibah Oval, Kahibah Newcastle captain Anthony Hobson won the toss and elected to bat in fine conditions at Kahibah Oval. After the loss of two early wickets, Josh Trappel combined with Hobson and Kaine Harmsworth in two useful partnerships. Well positioned to post a competitive total, the lower order found the going tough as Newcastle were dismissed for 172 in the 48th over. Ben Oakley lead the ACT attack most effectively, finishing with the figures of 5/20. The ACT immediately attacked the Newcastle bowling lineup, who were unable to find answers as the ACT cruised to victory with more than 17 overs to spare.

NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 9 Sunday 18 September 2011 Newcastle v ACT – 20/20 Match Kahibah Oval, Kahibah Newcastle again batted first in the Sunday T20 fixture, and were immediately on the back foot against a disciplined ACT bowling attack. A fighting 21 from Josh Trappel kept Newcastle’s hopes alive, as they crept to a total of 82 in 18.4 overs. The inexperienced Newcastle attack found it difficult to withstand the ACT’s onslaught, as the Comets cruised to an eight wicket victory in less than 10 overs.

These matches provide the ACT with an opportunity to prepare for their participation in the Futures League, and allow Newcastle’s most talented cricketers to showcase their skills against a talented opposition. As a result of the relationship that the NDCA has established with Cricket ACT, a number of Newcastle based players represented the Comets in several tournaments throughout the season. Andrew Maher featured for the ACT Comets in the Futures League, finishing as the leading wicket taker in the 2011/2012 competition. , Jeff Goninan and Beau McClintock were provided with the opportunity to participate at the Under 19 National Championships (held in Adelaide in January 2012), whilst Morgan Clune, Jake Montgomery and Cameron Roxby represented the ACT at the Under 17 National Championships in Tasmania in December 2011. Greg West and Cameron Roxby (pictured left) were ultimately selected in an Australian Under 18 Development Squad, and attended the AIS Cricket Academy in February 2012.

10 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 State Challenge 2011 As winners of the NSW Country Championships in the 2010-2011 season, Newcastle were invited to host Sydney University (winners of the Sydney Cricket Association’s Limited Overs competition) in the State Challenge in September 2011. It was most pleasing to see Country Cricket NSW reinstate this fixture, which had not been played for a number of seasons. Once a highlight of the Country program, the State Challenge fixture offers a chance for elite Country cricketers to demonstrate their skills against strong opposition; more opportunities of this nature would no doubt benefit Country Cricket. The NDCA’s thanks are extended to the Toronto Workers club and to Robert Holland for their assistance in ensuring that this fixture proceeded without difficulties.

Saturday 10 September 2011 Newcastle v Sydney University Ron Hill Oval, Toronto

Sydney University won the toss and elected to bat in friendly conditions at Ron Hill Oval. Although the ground was in excellent condition early in the season, scoring was not easy on a slightly slow wicket. Newcastle made good use of the conditions, and were able to restrict the Sydney University batsmen throughout their innings. A patient 59* from former University of Newcastle Player Mark Faraday guided Sydney University to a competitive total of 6/192, whilst Mark Dries made excellent use of the conditions to return the economical figures of 10-5-2/9. The disciplined Sydney University attack made scoring difficult, with only Merewether’s Troy Goodwin coming to grips with the conditions. Despite Goodwin’s fighting 75*, Newcastle fell 17 runs short of the target.

NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 11 Country Cricket Championships The NSW Country Cricket Committee of Management revised the structure of the Senior Country Championships in season 2011/2012. The knockout format of previous seasons was abandoned, with the tournament comprised of Northern and Southern divisions. The revised format sees each team play three preliminary matches, with the winners of the Northern and Southern divisions meeting in the Final of the Country Championships. The Northern division was hosted by Newcastle, with all matches played at Cahill Oval and Miller Field, Belmont. The Belmont Sporties Club provided superb facilities which were appreciated by players and officials alike. The efforts of groundsman Steve Clarkson, in challenging conditions, must also be recognised.

Friday 18 November 2011 Newcastle v North Coast Miller Field, Belmont After a week of poor weather in Newcastle, conditions did not change for the first day of the Northern pool of the Country Championships. The match between Newcastle and North Coast was abandoned without any play.

Saturday 19 November 2011 Newcastle v Western Cahill Oval, Belmont Western captain Tim Cox won the toss and elected to bowl in what appeared to be bowler friendly conditions at Cahill Oval. Mark Dries and Pat Darwen seized the initiative, playing positively in the opening overs. Both fell in quick succession and some tight bowling from Western saw Newcastle reduced to 5 for 63. Simon Moore’s patient innings of 65 ensured that Newcastle reached a competitive total of 175, with Moore sharing a 61 run partnership for the 6th wicket with Josh Geary (20). Fine weather meant that the wicket improved throughout the day, and the Western innings commenced in perfect sunshine. Despite a spirited effort from the Newcastle bowlers, the Western batsmen formed a number of useful partnerships and eased to a six wicket victory.

12 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 Sunday 20 November 2011 Newcastle v Central North Miller Field, Belmont Newcastle entered the final preliminary match with a slim chance of progressing to the finals. A strong bowling and fielding performance restricted Central North to a total of 227 from its 50 overs, with Josh Geary (3/39) and Nick Foster (2/26) using the conditions most effectively in the middle overs. Needing to secure victory within 30 overs to secure two bonus points, Newcastle attacked the Central North bowling from the outset. A brisk 103 run partnership between Mark Dries and Kaine Harmsworth set Newcastle on course for an emphatic victory, before captain Mark Littlewood guided Newcastle to victory with more than 16 overs to spare. However, Western’s victory against North Coast ensured that they progressed to the Final of the Country Championships as winners of the Northern Pool. For the first time in many seasons, Cricket NSW and the NDCA scheduled a fixture between the New South Wales Second XI and the Newcastle representative team in late February 2012. The New South Wales Second XI won the toss and elected to bat in superb conditions at No 1 Sportsground. With Sam Webber and Luke Bird each claiming an early wicket, the Second XI were reduced to 2/11. Daniel Hughes and David Dawson then combined in 174 run partnership for the 3rd wicket, with Dawson eventually departing for 136 (16 x 4s). The NSW Second XI scored quickly after the tea break, eventually declaring with some 12 overs remaining in the day’s play. An aggressive spell of from NSW Speed Blitz Blues representative Chris Tremain reduced Newcastle to 4/32 at stumps.

The Newcastle middle order fought valiantly on the second morning, but were unable to resist the NSW attack. Dismissed for 119 in their first innings, Newcastle were asked to follow on. Despite again losing early wickets the Newcastle middle order attacked, with Mark Littlewood taking 21 runs from one Burt Cockley over. Sam Webber continued the assault, scoring 47 from just 23 balls (5 x 6s, 3 x 4s), sharing a 59 run partnership with Josh Emerton for the 7th wicket in little more than 6 overs. Newcastle were ultimately dismissed for 210, allowing the NSW Second XI to secure victory within two days. All of the volunteers who assisted the NDCA in conducting the fixture are thanked for their time and dedication throughout the week in which the fixture was played.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Newcastle again suffered from the loss of early wickets. However, captain Mark Littlewood shared partnerships of 63 with Brett Jackson and 74 with Josh Trappel to lead Newcastle to a competitive total of 5/144. Wickets in consecutive balls to Sam Webber brought Newcastle into the match, but the experience of ’s saw the New South Wales Second XI complete a well-paced chase with three balls to spare.

16 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 COUNTRY COLTS CARNIVAL The Country Colts Carnival was hosted by the Illawarra zone in late January 2012. The withdrawal of several senior players saw Newcastle send a young squad to compete in the carnival, with almost all players eligible to participate in Colts competition for a number of seasons into the future. Coach Gary Pinches must again be thanked for his commitment to the Newcastle Representative Cricket program, and in particular his dedication to the Junior representative teams. The efforts of Manager Mark Eveleigh are also acknowledged.

Friday 27 January 2012 Newcastle v Riverina Hollymount Park East, Illawarra Wet weather saw this match abandoned with play. Newcastle progressed by virtue of its higher seeding.

Saturday 28 January 2012 Newcastle v Southern North Dalton Park, Illawarra Newcastle won the toss and asked Southern to bat in bowler friendly conditions. Southern made a sound start to their innings, the openers adding 56 before Peter Lojszczyk broke through for Newcastle. Securing wickets at regular intervals, Newcastle were able to restrict Southern to 8/194 from their 50 overs. Reduced to 4/34, a lone hand from Nathan Hudson (77*, 5 x 4s, 1 x 6s) kept Newcastle’s hopes afloat. However, with no other batsman passing 12, Newcastle were unable to seriously challenge Southern, who prevailed by 36 runs.

Sunday 23 January 2012 Newcastle v Western Figtree No 1 Oval, Illawarra Newcastle won the toss and elected to bat in the final match of the Country Colts Championship campaign. After the loss of an early wicket, Jeff Goninan (113) and Dylan Hunter (67) combined in a 171 run partnership for the 2nd wicket, before Goninan and Nathan Hudson added a further 54 runs in NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 17 just 7 overs. Newcastle’s total of 276 proved too great for Western, who lost regular wickets to the balanced Newcastle attack. Wallsend’s Daniel McGovern was the pick of bowlers, securing three wickets to close out the match in emphatic fashion.

UNDER 17 NORTHERN CARNIVAL The 2012 Under 17 Country Championships were held in Dubbo hosted by Western Zone. Unfortunately the tournament was interrupted with rain but we still managed to get three games of cricket being a 50 over game and two T20 games. It was obvious from the start of the tournament that Newcastle posed the biggest threat of the carnival, given the team’s success in the winning of the 2011 Bradman Cup and Under 16 State Challenge. Unfortunately results were mixed, with us going down in the 50 over game, but winning both T20 games.

Round 1 – Illawarra 6/235 (T Edwards 74, D Constable 42, C Brown 28) def Newcastle 206 (J Montgomery 33, M Clune 33, R Hanlon 27, B Chapman 4/59, S Benson 2/21)

The first day saw us up against Illawarra in the 50 over game. Illawarra batted very well and was 6/235 after 50 overs. We really needed someone to stand up and make a big score, but unfortunately all of our batsmen got starts with no one really going on with it. Eventually Newcastle were bowled out for 206 with 33 being the top score achieved by both Jake Montgomery and Morgan Clune.

Round 2 – Newcastle 3/138 (J Forsyth 60) def Riverina 9/106 (M Clune 3/15, C Single 2/11)

The second day was washed out and the following day saw us play two T20 games. Our first T20 was against Riverina. Newcastle batted first and scored 3/138 of 20 overs, on the back of an excellent innings from Josh Forsyth of 60. Newcastle then bowled and fielded very well, restricting Riverina to 9/106 off their 20 overs, winning easily.

Round 3 – Newcastle 3/90 (R Hanlon 23*, Z Sheather 2/22) def North Coast 8/86

Newcastle then played North Coastal. North Coastal batted first and after some very tight bowling and excellent fielding, we restricted them to 8/86 from 20 overs. Newcastle were always in control passing their total in the 17th over, 3 wickets down.

There were no standouts in the Newcastle team with all players making a contribution with either bat or ball at some stage throughout the tournament. Daniel Arms and Cameron Roxby were selected to represent the NSW Country Under 17 team, who played the NSW City Under 17 team in Bowral the following weekend.

20 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 BRADMAN CUP The 2012 Bradman Cup was hosted by Southern Zone, with games played at the northern end of that Zone, around Kiama, Gerringong, Albion Park and Jambaroo. After the success of the previous campaign high hopes were held for this squad which included five Under 15 Players. Unfortunately after a convincing win on Day 1 against Riverina, the next two games resulted in losses to North Cost and the eventual winners, Central North.

Round 1 – Newcastle 1/116 (M Clune 68*) def Riverina 112 (C Mathieson 31, M Clune 3/9, H Crossley 2/10)

The team’s first game against Riverina was played at Gerringong on synthetic due to poor weather the day before. Riverina batted first and compiled only 112 off 39 overs. Newcastle responded in emphatic style finishing with 1/116 off 32 overs.

Round 2 – North Coast 252 (N Scott 72, J Carroll 45, J Patterson 3/40) def Newcastle 210 (H Crossley 45, M Clune 40, M Finlayson 29, J Forsyth 29, D Rootes 3/37)

Day 2 saw Newcastle play North Coast at Jambaroo. Having won the toss Newcastle sent North Coast into bat, with local curating advice stating the wicket would assist the team bowling first. Unfortunately this was not too accurate with North Coast compiling 252 off their 50 overs. In chasing this target Newcastle made a good start to be 0/61 after 15 overs but then steadily lost wickets to finish at 210.

Round 3 – Central North 3/154 (M Houlahan 53, G Manley 48*, J Psarakis 34) def Newcastle 153 (S Davies 40, M Clune 35, H Batley 4/41)

The last game against Central North was also at Jambaroo. Having batted first Newcastle never really got momentum going and were dismissed or only 153. Central North easily achieved this with the loss of 3 wickets.

From the Bradman Cup Newcastle had Morgan Clune (Newcastle City) and Jonte Pattinson (Toronto Workers) selected in the NSW Country Camp to be held in April in Sydney, from which some Country players will be selected in the NSW Under 17 Development squad.

KOOKABURRA CUP The Newcastle team for the Kookaburra Cup was selected from the DCA Team and selected players from the U14 Presidents and U13’s DCA team. The competition was hosted in Taree. The competition was unfortunately interrupted by rain making game time limited. All grounds and facilities were excellent and provided a good opportunity for the team to play on quality grounds and turf wickets. Rain played a significant role but all groundstaff made every effort to try to get cricket played. The carnival organisers worked diligently to ensure that matches proceeded, albeit under extremely challenging conditions.

Round 1 – Illawarra 6/90 (T Flynn-Duncombe 32*, E Thompson 2/17) def Newcastle 88 (L Johnson 25, K Booth 3/18, K Flynn-Duncombe 2/10, T Dodds 2/14)

NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 21 Rain delayed the start of play, when the covers were removed the wicket had some surface moisture but was hard underneath with a good covering of grass. The outfield was very soft. Newcastle lost the toss and were put into bat; a solid start was made, but runs were hard to come by with a number of rain delays throughout the innings. Attempts to build a competitive total in the latter stages of the innings saw us all out for 88 in 37 overs. Illawarra went into to bat as the weather cleared; the boys put on a good display of tight bowling, but after the first hour the wicket dried and became a bit easier. Illawarra chased us down in 34.1 overs (6/90). Quinn Fowler, Duncan Brown and Arron Bills were the best of the bowlers.

Round 2 - Central North 8/124 (B Smith 32, S Lewis 3/23, D Brown 2/15) def Newcastle 123 (E Niszczot 42, S Yabsley 3/18, P Magann 2/12, P Stapleton 2/14, T Park 2/15)

Newcastle won the toss and with a very wet outfield, but a dry wicket, Newcastle elected to have a bat. A couple of early wickets saw a consolidation by the middle order but momentum was interrupted with a rain delay in the middle session. Resumption of play saw a bit of a collapse with Newcastle all out for 123. The weather cleared in the afternoon but a solid bowling and economical bowling effort nearly saw the boys across the line in a pressure cooker game. Central North ultimately prevailed, scoring 8/124 in 48.1 overs to secure a narrow victory.

Round 3 - Central Coast 6/115 (B Denneman 26, E Niszczot 3/19) def Newcastle 6/114 (E Niszczot 60*, S Byfield 3/21)

Game 3 saw another wet day and a delayed start as the groundstaff worked hard to get a game on. Newcastle batted first a got off to a solid but slow start on a very slow outfield when rain caused a delay in play which saw a reduction in overs. When play resumed an excellent display of positive batting saw the boys post a competitive target for the conditions of 6/114. As the rain cleared, an excellent bowling and fielding display from Newcastle saw the game come down to the second last ball with Central Coast scraping home. Elliot Thompson, Duncan Brown and Quinn Fowler all bowled exceptionally well.

Although the results don’t show it in wins the team bonded well and played some exceptional cricket in extremely tough conditions and I believe all players gained valuable experience that will further their cricket and make Newcastle solid in the coming years. As the carnival progressed the boys became more of a unit producing a gutsy team effort in the last game that showed individual skills harnessed in a team all round performance where all gave 100% and nearly pulled off a fantastic win.

Unfortunately the weather was a significant contributor to the results of this competition and I don’t feel the results were indicative of where the team sat in the overall level of the competition. I believe all players will be better for the experience. We have some very talented cricketers in Newcastle and need to constantly nurture and develop them both as cricketers and young men. I would also like to thank Frank and Brent for their assistance and dedication to the squad in the lead up and during the kookaburra cup 11/12.

DE COURCY CLUB AND DE COURCY CUP The De Courcy Club was formed in 2009 with the aim of raising funds for a diverse range of cricket programs and charity organizations across Newcastle and NSW. Newcastle District clubs compete for the De Courcy Cup, with the holder of the Cup defending it during each round of the Commonwealth Bank Premiership. Hamilton-Wickham entered the 2011-2012 season as holders of the De Courcy Cup, and ultimately retained the Cup at season’s end. The Belmont, Toronto Workers, University, Waratah-Mayfield and Stockton- Raymond Terrace clubs all held the Cup at various stages throughout the season. The NDCA greatly appreciates the De Courcy Club’s ongoing support of the De Courcy Cup and cricket in Newcastle.

The De Courcy Club also held a successful Finals luncheon on Friday 30 March 2012, with more than 300 guests attending the event which featured former Australian opening batsmen Mark Taylor and Michael Slater. The luncheon was a great success, and is fast becoming a regular part of the Newcastle cricket calendar. 2011-2012 DE COURCY CUP WINNERS

32 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 NDCA COMPETITIONS 2011-2012

Merewether’s dominance of the 2011-2012 season was Club Championship 2011-2012 reflected in the club championship, with Merewether Club Points finishing almost 100 points clear of Hamilton-Wickham Merewether 1032 to claim the club championship for the thirteenth time. Hamilton-Wickham 939 The Club Championship standings do not adequately Newcastle City 848 Charlestown 738 demonstrate the extent of Merewether’s success, with the University 720 First Grade team reaching the SCG Country Cup Final in Wests CC 713 addition to its success in all three of the NDCA’s First Toronto Workers Kookaburras 707 Stockton-Raymond Terrace 631 Grade competitions, and all Grades qualifying for the Wallsend 585 Semi Finals. Hamilton-Wickham’s resurgence continued, Belmont 574 the club progressing from 11th position in season 2008- Waratah-Mayfield 546 2009 to a second place finish. Whilst the continued Cardiff-Boolaroo 396 success of the First Grade side, who won the Commonwealth Bank for the third consecutive season was a significant factor in the clubs performance, the improved performance of all of the clubs lower grade sides contributed significantly to their second place finish. Wests CC were season 2011-2012’s other high achievers, with their First Grade side finishing a much improved 6th and the club mirroring that effort to finish in the same position in the club championship.

Newcastle City’s spirited defence of the club championship saw them finish in third place, with their lower grade strength most evident in the Denis Broad OAM Cup competition. Belmont and Wallsend qualified for the First Grade Semi Finals, but had limited success in the lower grades. Both Stockton and Charlestown enjoyed success in Second Grade, whilst Toronto were able to qualify for the finals in both the Third and Fourth Grades. Waratah-Mayfield experienced success in the T20 Competition, but joined University and Cardiff-Boolaroo in failing to qualify for the Finals in the Grade competition. Cardiff-Boolaroo did reach the Semi Finals of the Under 21 Competition, losing to eventual champions Newcastle City.

Waratah Mayfield 32 0.8505 Merewether posted a total of 242 in the second Cardiff-Boolaroo 20 0.5087 Semi Final, played on an excellent wicket at Townson Oval. Belmont placed the Lions under some pressure, and appeared to be well positioned at 3/150 before a middle order collapse saw Merewether progress to the Final with a 35 run victory.

Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April 2012 Merewether v Wallsend No 1 Sportsground, Newcastle After a season of wet weather, Merewether won the toss and elected to bat in fine conditions at No 1 Sportsground. Merewether made a steady start, before Pat Darwen combined with Troy Goodwin (59) and Trent Bush (51) to propel Merewether to an imposing total of 6/329. Darwen became just the second Merewether batsman to score a century in the First Grade Final, and the first to do so in more than 80 years. Wallsend’s chase did not begin well, with Sam Gilmour securing two early wickets to put Merewether on the front foot. Brett Jackson and Joe Curk made important middle order contributions, with Tim O’Neill removing both to reduce Wallsend to 5/155. A spirited knock of 65 from teenager Cameron Roxby provided Wallsend with some hope, but Wallsend’s chances went with him as he became O’Neill’s sixth victim; Gilmour claimed the final two wickets as Merewether prevailed by 67 runs. Tim O’Neill was awarded the Rogers the Jewellers’ Trophy as the player of the match.

NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 37 TOM LOCKER CUP

THE rejuvenated format of the Tom Locker Cup Tom Locker Cup Pool A was a success in season 2011-2012, with most Club Points NRR matches in the competition completed despite the Hamilton-Wickham 32 2.7000 persistent wet weather. Having narrowly missed Belmont 19 0.7978 the final the previous season, Hamilton-Wickham Wests CC 18 -0.2905 Wallsend 17 -0.8319 surged clear in Pool A, and qualified for the final Newcastle City 11 -1.3529 with a round to spare. Perhaps the highlight of the Charlestown 7 -1.2276 preliminary rounds was Sam Webber’s devastating Tom Locker Cup Pool B innings of 175 against Wests CC, which is believed Club Points NRR to be the highest individual score recorded in a 1st Merewether 35 1.3568 Grade 50 over match. Pool B was closely fought, University 23 0.9780 Stockton-Terrace 19 0.6933 with Merewether defeating University on the final Waratah-Mayfield 11 -1.0899 day of the regular season to ensure that they Toronto Workers 7 -1.2377 progressed to the final. Merewether v Hamilton-Wickham Sunday 18 March 2012 No 1 Sportsground, Newcastle Having chosen to bat, Merewether lost three early wickets to be reduced to 3/21. 38 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 NDCA T20 COMPETITION

st First Grade T20 Pool A The integration of T20 cricket in the 1 Grade Club Points NRR competition continued in season 2011-2012. Many Waratah-Mayfield 6 0.3454 clubs continue to report on the success of the University 4 0.6367 “club day” concept, which is a unique opportunity Cardiff-Boolaroo 0 -1.8524 presented by the T20 format. It is particularly First Grade T20 Pool B pleasing to see a number of clubs utilising these Club Points NRR days to consolidate links with Junior teams, many Wallsend 4 2.2958 Belmont 4 0.3379 clubs choosing to incorporate a junior match at the Newcastle City 0 -1.7803 start of the day’s proceedings. It seems that the First Grade T20 Pool C standard of play in the First Grade T20 Club Points NRR competition has increased, no doubt a result of the Wests CC 6 0.6667 availability of points contributing to both the First Hamilton-Wickham 2 0.2667 Grade and Club Championship standings. The Charlestown 2 -0.7000 First Grade T20 Pool D 2011-2012 season saw Merewether’s Josh Geary Club Points NRR record the first century in an NDCA First Grade Merewether 4 1.1864 T20 match. At the completion of the preliminary Stockton-Terrace 2 -0.1340 rounds, surprise packets Waratah-Mayfield and Toronto Workers 0 -1.9750 Wests CC were undefeated, with Merewether and Wallsend also progressing to the Semi Finals. The Hamilton-Wickham club hosted the Semi Finals day in both the Denis Broad OAM Cup and the First Grade T20, with Merewether accouting for Waratah- Mayfield as Wests fought out a narrow victory over Wallsend.

46 NDCA Annual Report 2011-2012 UNDER 21 COMPETITION

Under 21 Pool A The Under 21 Competition was again contested by Club Points NRR the twelve NDCA clubs over as a round robin Newcastle City 15 1.0171 competition from December 2011 to March 2012. Waratah-Mayfield 10 0.1481 Whilst the round robin competition format Wallsend 9 -0.2655 remained in place, it was disappointing to note that Wests CC 4 -1.0414 Under 21 Pool B some clubs were not able to field a full side in all Club Points NRR competition matches. On the other hand, the Cardiff-Boolaroo 16 0.7042 success of the Stockton-Raymond Terrace team Charlestown 15 0.3990 must be noted, with a number of Raymond Belmont 11 -0.5516 Terrace players making a significant contribution Merewether 4 -1.1983 to the success of the team. Both Stockton- Under 21 Pool C Raymond Terrace and Newcastle City were Club Points NRR undefeated as they progressed to the Semi Finals. Stockton-Terrace 21 1.3059 Toronto Workers 11 1.6002 Newcastle City easily accounted for Cardiff- University 9 -0.2987 Boolaroo in the first semi-final, whilst Stockton- Hamilton-Wickham 3 -1.9453 Raymond Terrace secured a relatively comfortable victory in their semi-final against Charlestown. Newcastle City ultimately prevailed in the Final, defeating Stockton in a hard fought victory. The standout individual performance of Will Maher (6/29) and captain Jeff Goninan (53 and 4 dismissals) were not enough to overcome the combined efforts of the Newcastle City squad. It is perhaps interesting to note that a significant proportion of the successful Newcastle City side are Newcastle City juniors, who have progressed into the senior ranks and are an important element of the growth and development of that club.
