The Newcastle Steel representative team qualified for the playoffs of the Sydney Cricket Association Kingsgrove Cup in its third season in the competition. With victories over Sutherland, Mosman and Illawarra in the preliminary rounds, the Steel was defeated by the eventual competition winner Randwick-Petersham in the semi-finals. This was a fabulous effort by the team and fully justifies the inclusion of regional teams in the Sydney based competition. Further to this, the Newcastle team won the NSW Country Championships defeating the revitalized Southern Zone which now includes ACT based players. Congratulations to coach Shane Burley, captain Mark Littlewood, the players and the dedicated support group on a fantastic representative season. I have had the privilege of travelling with the team in recent seasons and witnessing firsthand the hard work and sacrifices that are made to achieve these results. The spare day was needed to complete the final of the NDCA competition after bad light stopped play with 10 overs still be bowled at the end of day 2. The largest cricket crowd in memory turned out on Good Friday to watch the conclusion of an enthralling final. Merewether won their 5th consecutive final over Hamilton-Wickham and continued to state their case as one of the best club sides in the history of Newcastle cricket. Merewether were superbly led by Simon Moore who has developed into a cricket captain of the highest order. To cap a very successful season, Simon was named Herald Player of the Year and won the first grade batting Dickinson Shield award. Hamilton-Wickham opening bowler Sam Webber was a worthy winner of the Clifford medal as Player of the Final with his ten wicket haul. The use of pink balls in the twilight T20 round at No. 1 Sports Ground saw the NDCA become one of the first competitions in Australia to introduce this concept. The pink balls were well received by all clubs and created a unique and enjoyable round of cricket. Match day crowds were good and with live streaming coverage, tens of thousands of viewers tuned into NDCA T20 cricket. The performance and development of Wallsend’s Jason Sangha was the most significant individual event of the Newcastle cricket season. Jason advanced from a Newcastle under 16 Bradman Cup player to a NSW 2nd XI player with a NSW rookie contract within 12 months. Jason represented Australia at under age level and has risen to every challenge that he has been set. Jason scored a century in the NDCA competition, represented Newcastle at the NSW Country Championships and was the recipient of the Warren Tenant scholarship for season 2015-16.

On behalf of Cricket Australia, I welcome all players, parents and families to this year's Under 19 Male National Championships. Cricket Australia’s Underage National Championships are an integral part of the Australian Cricket Pathway, and continue to provide important development opportunities for our emerging stars. These championships have been the largest contributor of talent to the men’s national team since their establishment, and have helped the likes of Australian captains Tim Paine and Aaron Finch rise from young guns to international leaders. We have already seen a group of players make the step up to JLT Sheffield Shield cricket this summer, after playing at last season’s Under 19 Male National Championships. In the first half of the season, Jack Edwards and Jason Sangha have made their debuts for New South Wales, as has Lloyd Pope for South Australia and Nathan McSweeney for Queensland. It just goes to show that the next level is not that far away. To all of our players, this is an exciting phase of your sporting journey and I encourage you to embrace this experience. Enjoy the challenge of testing yourselves against the best players from right across Australia, and the opportunity to play with your teammates and create memories that will last throughout your cricketing careers and beyond. • Anuj at the 2009 Indoor Cricket World Cup in Australia
The ICCA Cricket Club My 2009 Indoor Cricket World Cup Journey To Australia Selection I will fondly remember that day in April when I received a call informing me of my selection for the England U16 indoor cricket squad to play in the forthcoming World Cup tournament in Australia in October 2009. Mike Gatting had made the squad announcements at the Bristol training centre but not confident of selection, I did not attend this event! Having played indoor cricket from the age of 8, I was confident of my abilities but when I saw those big lads at the trials, I thought I had made a mistake. Of course I was overwhelmed and proud to have made it to the initial squad. The task now was to make it to the final squad of 12 players for the tournament. Preparation Our pre-tournament training was mostly based in Bristol over a period of six months. This involved rigorous fitness training as well as honing the skills of playing competitive indoor cricket matches. On a few occasions we played against the U19s and the men’s teams to toughen our approach. Indoor cricket was invented in Australia where they have over a hundred centres compared to our six! Needless to say, the international level of competition was expected to be very strong. This is the fastest format of the game and is gradually gaining popularity in all major Test playing countries. The ECB is taking control over the game from this year and it is anticipated that more quality facilities will be available throughout the country in the coming years.

He made the comments after touring COT Holdings at Newton Industrial Estate, Christ Church, stating that it is imperative that a way is found to reduce the cost of the inputs so that the products can be sold more competitively. “Some of the costs that you see on some of these items are not in sync with what they have had to pay, so that what you see reflected as the final price has no bearing to the ban that we have put on single use plastics. I have said before and I am saying it now, we have persons in Barbados, the corporate companies [who] have a responsibility to engage in practices that are in sync with Barbadian values,” he said. He continued, “There is an ethical kind of behaviour that should bind all of us.” Haynesville Youth Group Dancers and Dancin’ Africa performing at the Holetown Monument.
