    DECIDE: How to Manage the Risk in Your Decision Making Beware milestones Having convinced you to improve your measurement of what really matters in your organisation so that you can make better decisions, I must provide a word of caution. Sometimes when we introduce new measures we actually hurt decision making. Take the effect that milestones have on people. Milestones as the name infers are solid markers of progress on a journey. You have either made the milestone or you have fallen short. There is no better example of the effect of milestones on decision making than from sport. Take the game of cricket. If you don’t know cricket all you need to focus in on is one number, 100. That number represents a century of runs by a batsman in one innings and is a massive milestone. Careers are judged on the number of centuries a batsman scores. A batsman plays the game to score runs by hitting a ball sent toward him at varying speeds of up to 100.2 miles per hour (161.3 kilometres per hour) by a bowler from 22 yards (20 metres) away. The 100.2 mph delivery, officially the fastest ball ever recorded, was delivered by Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan. Shoaib was nicknamed the Rawalpindi Express! Needless to say, scoring runs is not dead easy. A great batting average in cricket at the highest levels is 40 plus and you are among the elite when you have an average over 50. Then there is Australia’s great Don Bradman who had an average of 99.94 with his next nearest rivals being South Africa’s Graeme Pollock with 60.97 and England’s Herb Sutcliffe with 60.63.

Established 1967 President's Report It is my pleasure to report on another highly successful and buoyant year for the Australian Cricket Society in 2020-21. Despite all the challenges of lockdowns and the nation’s roller- coasting battle with Covid-19 we have been able to complete a dozen functions in the last 12 months, albeit the majority by ‘Zoom’, allowing us to make another substantial donation to our gold charity partners the Ponting Foundation. Among the Zoom guests were Test offspinner Ashley Mallett, authors David Frith, Dan Liebke, Craig Dodson and Wes Cusworth and leading Australian women Annabel Sutherland and Rachael Haynes. We were also pleased to hold our annual dinner, which Covid- 19 had precluded from being held in 2020. Cricket’s fraternity and friendships were never more important than in July when our dinner guest, Test fast bowler James Pattinson was in touch on the Wednesday, telling me that a personal issue precluded his attendance for the Friday.     Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

To celebrate our Sesquicentenary, and to recognise our proud cricket heritage, we have great pleasure in hosting this Cricket Festival, from December 9 to 14. Four Prince Alfred Old Collegians have gone on to captain the Australian Test Cricket Team: Joe Darling, Clem Hill and Ian and Greg Chappell. In honour of these gentlemen, the teams will be competing for the Chappell Brothers Trophy, whilst the Clem Hill Award will be presented to the best player of the tournament and the Joe Darling Award will go to the player who shows the greatest sportsmanship. We are delighted to welcome five other leading boys’ schools to participate in the Festival. This includes our traditional rivals, St Peter's College, together with three other leading Australian boys’ schools: Scotch College, Melbourne; Newington College, Sydney; and Anglican Church Grammar School, Brisbane. Cricket Australia’s Underage National Championships are an integral part of the Australian Cricket Pathway, and continue to provide important development opportunities for our emerging stars. These championships have been the largest contributor of talent to the men’s national team since their establishment, and have helped the likes of Australian captains Tim Paine and Aaron Finch rise from young guns to international leaders. We have already seen a group of players make the step up to JLT Sheffield Shield cricket this summer, after playing at last season’s Under 19 Male National Championships.
