AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY 54th Annual Report & Financial Statements 2020~2021

to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Cricket Society Incorporated on Friday, 20th August 2021

Australian Cricket Society Inc. Established 1967

President's Report

It is my pleasure to report on another highly successful and buoyant year for the Australian Cricket Society in 2020-21. Despite all the challenges of lockdowns and the nation’s roller- coasting battle with Covid-19 we have been able to complete a dozen functions in the last 12 months, albeit the majority by ‘Zoom’, allowing us to make another substantial donation to our gold charity partners the Ponting Foundation. Among the Zoom guests were Test offspinner , authors David Frith, Dan Liebke, Craig Dodson and Wes Cusworth and leading Australian women and .

We were also pleased to hold our annual dinner, which Covid- 19 had precluded from being held in 2020. Cricket’s fraternity and friendships were never more important than in July when our dinner guest, Test fast bowler was in touch on the Wednesday, telling me that a personal issue precluded his attendance for the Friday. There was just 48 hours to go and Victoria’s head coach Chris Rogers stepped in. Chris Rogers demonstrating how high the Master should be raising his arm when ! Pic by Johann Jayasinha - SNNI The ultimate insider in Australian cricket, a champion player and an even better bloke, Chris spoke for an hour about the Vics and the Aussies and also about his memorable 2013 Ashes trip when he broke through for the first of his five Test centuries at Durham.

More than 100 attended – that was the maximum figure allowed – and once again we were able to make a decent contribution to Ricky and Rianna’s Foundation.

This event and all the others were again expertly and seamlessly organized by our evergreen secretary for the last 12 years, Wayne Ross. It was my privilege on the night to award him with Life Membership of the ACS. With typical good humor his first words were: ‘About time!’

Among the capacity crowd was our living Legend Doug Manning, now 90 and still hail and hearty. I joined Wayne and his wife Rhonda at Doug’s big birthday. It was a long drive from Frankston way to East Doncaster, so I said to Ronnie on arrival: ‘I’m going to get you one of the best glasses of red wine you’ve ever had.’ ‘No you're not.’ ‘Why?’ ‘Take a look.’ Over on the ‘bar’ was a variety of soft drinks – Doug’s new retirement community home not yet having its liquor license!

Despite the lockdowns – and in we had four stretching more than six months – we have been able to successful entertain most of our members. The June Zoom session with David Frith, cricket’s leading author and historian, was a beauty. We stepped up our flow of newsletters, releasing them at the start of every month and with a few in-between as well; extra communications welcomed by the membership which I’m glad to report remains at 300-plus.

Upcoming next year, international travel allowing, we intend touring and in 2023 Susan and I will again head up an ACS Ashes tour for the Lord’s Test and the west country Citadels of Devon and Cornwall. We love to have a week of ‘r and r’ before heading into for the cricket. We're so fortunate, unlike many tours, to have access to Test tickets for every day of every match via our gold travel partners Events Travel.

One late winter function we particularly anticipated was the opportunity to have lunch with the cricket-loving Governor-General of Australia, His Excellency David Hurley, who agreed to launch a biography of Vietnam veteran Tony Dell, the only living Test cricketer to have seen active service. Tony’s biography ‘And Bring the Darkness Home’ is explosive. He witnessed events in Vietnam humans aren’t supposed to see. Just days before returning to Brisbane, he and six of his mates lost their way in the blackest of jungles an hour south of Saigon and decided to bed down for the night. Just as they were settling, 200 Viet Kong marched straight at them. One cough, one noise, one crackle of their radio and they were dead. The enemy kept marching and Tony was so traumatised he couldn’t speak for almost an hour. His life fell apart after Vietnam; his mood swings leading to a marriage breakdown and years of separation from his three children. It wasn’t until he was in his 60s living in his mother’s garage that he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress

disorder. His biography is a cracker and we were rapt when His Excellency said ‘yes, I'll come’. It shapes as one of the great events in our 54-year history, right up there with the night in 1973 when Sir Donald Bradman made the feature address at one of our early annual dinners.

One initiative we are particularly proud to have achieved was the successful launch of the Bendigo Bank/ Australian Cricket Society Academy Scholarship Squad with 12 boys and girls enjoying six weeks of in-depth cricket coaching from Keith Jansz, one of the great club coaches I have worked with. Keith provides the tools for the kids to advance. The trials for the second intake, for 2022, will again be held at Phil O’Meara’s club the Kingston Hawthorn Hawks in the New Year.

We once again enjoyed a full cricket season, despite the ongoing pandemic. Only one of our matches was abandoned through lockdown. The Over 60s enjoyed time in Echuca where we played in first division, while the Wandering XI’s grand finale match was against Harry Moffitt’s SAS lads at Frankston. We also hosted several ACS Over 70s games. My thanks to the co-ordinators of the teams: Sam Ferguson, our head of cricket David Long and Ian Gibson for Head of Cricket, David Long all their hard work and dedication. Thanks, too, to our committee, particularly ‘Rossy’ and treasurer Brian Tooth. Drew Payne had a great first year of vice-presidency, his duties including management of the Academy.

Our Pavilion annual magazine was again our standout publication, Mark Browning again responsible for much of the editorial, thanks Mark. And thanks to Hark Media’s Anthony Hall for its production.

Our long-time ‘warm up’ man Geoff Poulter was again a star of our footy launch function, delayed by 12 months until April.

We again finished in the black to the tune of $188 and member numbers continue to be strong.

We hope our members can continue to support us and also our gold partners whenever they can. This support will be pivotal as we look to further advance our goals and ambitions upcoming.

In addition to these, the Society selected twelve Cricket Scholars and a Journalism Scholar.

Cricket Scholars

The Society contracted the Keith Jansz Coaching Academy to take the reigns of the Society’s Cricket Sponsorship Program. Keith took over as Head Coach.

During December 2020 and January 2021, two sessions were conducted at the Walter Galt Reserve, the Home Ground of Premier Club, Kingston Hawthorn.

More than thirty boys and girls tried out for the twelve places to be allocated. Following the trials, twelve Scholars were selected – seven boys and five girls:

Boys: Jaikar Araich, Harry Cameron, Abraham Matthews, Jock McKenzie, George Pourpouras, Ollie Rivett and Cooper Remy

Girls: Mannat Chadha, Meera Hyderabad, Nilakshi Perera, Emily Taranto and Sahana Tarini

The Program undertaken by our Scholars began in late May – an Introduction Session and the first session were successfully completed, but that all came to a halt when the State Government announced a Lockdown which resulted in the next six sessions having to be postponed. The Sessions resumed on 21st June and will continue until 21st July.

In February 2021, Donal Wilson was appointed as the Society’s Journalism Scholar. Donal, under the guidance of Ken Piesse, wrote a number of articles which were featured on out issues of Scoresheet and e-NEWS.

During the year the Society lost four long-standing Members – Bruce Sivewright, Craig Cook, Richard Parker and Steve Mason.

Bruce Sivewright Bruce passed away on 6th September 2020 after battling Cancer for 33 years. Bruce joined the Society in July 1993 and was for a number of years co-editor of a number of the Society’s newsletters. He also served as Treasurer from 2008~2009 for three years.

Craig Cook Craig passed away on 7th September 2020 after a tough battle with Cancer. Craig joined the Society in April 2004 and was a regular with the Over 60s team.

It isn’t fair that that he should retire so early in the race It isn’t right that we all should lose such a terrific mate He went about his life with a quiet reassurance And time after time delivered up a solid positive performance I loved the way he took the ball with a glance around the field Square leg in a bit to catch the mistimed sweep Short cover back a stride to snare the one that steeped An expectation that this ball was to be his best A desire to put the eager batsman to his rest That subtle smile that always came when the ball landed on a seam Well done Cookie” was the jubilant on field call from all the team

We will call on him no more In a game we all adore It isn’t fair but we rejoice we had the chance to share The grass and a beer with one of the best boys anywhere John Smith

Richard Parker Dick joined the Society in September 1988 and passed away in October 2020. Dick, a legend of Mornington Peninsula Club, Boneo, was a regular Over 60s and Wandering XI player until age and poor health caught up with him.

Steve Mason Steve, a Life Member of the Society, passed away at the age of 96. Steve’s standing and extraordinary work for the Society saw him edit PAVILION for two decades from 1979 to 2001. Steve had been a President, Secretary and a Club during his career and later umpired with great success. His ‘CV’ included multiple Life Memberships and service plaques for 50 and 60 years of service from Cricket Victoria. Steve joined the Society in 1970 and as recognition of his unstinting service to the Society the Young Male and Female Cricketers of the Year are named in his honour.

ACS Playing Teams The ACS again fielded two teams in 2020-21, the Over 60s in the Veterans Cricket Victoria competition and the Wandering XI which true to its name played a variety of games at venues from the Butler Oval (Frankston Peninsula), Schramms Reserve (Fitzroy Doncaster), The Albert (Melbourne) and Suma Park in Queenscliff.

Our thanks to the team coordinators Ken Piesse (Over 60s) and Sam Ferguson (Wandering XI) and particularly the Playing Sub-Committee led by Head of Cricket, David Long. Players were regularly updated throughout the season with itineraries and match reports, the on-field fraternity again evident every time we went out.

We won our share of the games, not that the bottom line mattered that much!

ACS Over 60s In our most competitive and memorable season yet, the Over 60s played a total of 13 games, winning six, losing six and tieing one at the Echuca Carnival. A home-and-away regular competition highlight was our four consecutive wins after Christmas. Our teams were competitive from October to March, newcomers such as Terry Allinson, Mark Dunstan, Phil Hyde, Keith Jansz and Steve Wild adding depth and personality

It was a thrill for us all to be included in Division 1 of the Carnival at Echuca and play-off for third place. Injuries to several of our frontline players weakened our Squad at the Carnival. Peter Leggett and Peter Robinson were two to suffer long-term injuries in mid-tournament but insist they will be back soon in 2021~2022.

My thanks in particular to Keith Jansz, the youngest amongst us who led us at Echuca, Dave Long (Head of Cricket) and Ian Gibson for their assistance and support. Marino Bovo was an excellent manager at Echuca. Wayne Ross was again an amazingly expert conduit for MyCricket.

Throughout the home-and-away season we looked to share the responsibilities, playing competitive social cricket and involving as many players as possible. At Echuca, given we had been included in the top Eight, our focus changed to playing our best XII in most games. The fraternity we have created amongst us all in the last couple of years has encouraged us to think about a playing tour to Sri Lanka in 2022 when the Australians are due to tour.

It was a pleasure and an honour for us all to play on so many fine turf , at both Wandering XI and Over 60s levels. Among the leading grounds were Premier League 1st XI venues, The Albert Ground (home of Melbourne CC), the Walter Galt Reserve (Kingston Hawthorn CC) and Frankston Peninsula’s Adrian Butler Oval. The wickets at home venue – Elsternwick Park – were also excellent.

ACS Over 70s The ACS played two Over 70s games in 2020~2021. These games are particularly valuable as they provide opportunities for past ACS Over 60s players who are no longer playing O60s cricket, to continue representing the Society. Victory was enjoyed in both games with valuable contributions being made by numerous players. It was great to see our evergreen 82 year-old Bobby Hopkins open the bowling against Endeavour Hills, his eight impeccable overs costing just 17 runs. Next season a few more games are likely with one or two early in the season to provide practice for those Over 70s wishing to play in the Over 70s National Championships in November.

Wandering XI

The ACS Wandering XI had another successful season, only marred by some cancelled games due to COVID restrictions and weather. In fact, it was great to get some cricket in, as early in the ‘summer’, a full season seemed impossible. Despite these headaches we managed to fit in games against Powerhouse, Suma Park, the Supreme Court, Taverners Victoria, MCC Twenty-niners, a Sri Lankan / International XI and the Australian Veterans (SAS). Unfortunately, the planned games against Kew and the Umpires & Scorers will be held off for another year.

There were numerous highlights for the year – the Suma Park lunch is always a joy, several very close finishes – including a Tie against the Taverners featuring former Test allrounder Tony Dodemaide and a big end-of-season win against the Australian Veterans.

We were spoilt with the grounds we were able to utilise, getting to play on Melbourne’s The Albert Ground, Schramms Reserve (Fitzroy Doncaster), East Malvern-Tooronga’s Lucas Reserve and the Adrian Butler Oval, courtesy of Frankston Peninsula. Big thanks to the Clubs that hosted us and everyone who played especially those for whom this was their first year. Looking forward to another bumper season coming up. Among the new Fixtures proposed includes one against HMAS Cerberus.

Australian Cricket Society Financial Report 30 June 2021

I am pleased to present the financial report and financial statements for the Australian Cricket Society Inc (ACS) for the financial year ended 30 June 2021. The ACS remains in a solid financial position, with net assets of $41,987 at 30 June 2021 (compared with $41,799 at the end of the previous year).

The ACS has recorded a small surplus of $188 for the year (compared with a surplus of $454 for the previous year). With a net return of $2,054 (before specific sponsorship) from the four functions we held between COVID-19 lockdowns, in addition to sponsorship monies and the financial contributions of members, combined with strong cost control, we were once again able to contribute $5,000 to the Ponting Foundation.

In addition, the above factors, supported by the new and welcome sponsorship of Bendigo Bank (Doncaster East and Templestowe branches), have enabled the commencement of our own Academy, where a dozen boys and girls have received elite coaching and development.

The Society remains in a position where it will be able to continue supporting the development of young cricketers and the Ponting Foundation’s charitable activities.

SURPLUS FOR THE YEAR 188 454

Notes to Statement of Profit or Loss

1. Events – Luncheons, Dinners

The ACS was restricted with the number of events it could hold in the year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The four functions held were run profitably. Members and guests were able to enjoy most interesting speakers in John Hastings and the legendary Peter Bedford, in addition to a highly successful celebration of the life and career of Jack Potter.

2. Membership

The ACS continues to offer a genuine value for money cricket membership. The membership base remains strong.

3. Sponsorship

In another tough year economically, the ACS is grateful that most of our loyal sponsors supported us again. Their contribution significantly assists the Society in meeting our charitable activities and breaking even with our functions. The new sponsorship for our Academy (from Bendigo Bank) contributed significantly to the underlying costs.

4. Publications

Once again, the ACS produced four issues of the Scoresheet, the annual magazine PAVILION and regular extensive e-newsletters.

5. Academy

The Bendigo Bank ACS Cricket Academy enlisted the elite coaching services of Keith Jansz at an annual fee of $4,900
