Afghanistan wonderboy Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been recruited for this summer’s Big Bash and will bring a bag of tricks which will make his every delivery captivating. Mujeeb is so talented he can bowl wrist spin and finger spin. His two favourite balls are great slow bowling weapons, the wrong‘un bowled by wrist spin- ners and the carrom ball de- livered out of the front of the hand. Few bowlers can master both because they require vast- ly different skill sets. Mujeeb became the first male player born in the 21st century to play international cricket when he made his sen- ior debut for Afghanistan last year and has since represented his country at Test, ODI and T20 level. On behalf of Cricket Australia, I welcome all players, parents and families to this year's Under 19 Male National Championships. Cricket Australia’s Underage National Championships are an integral part of the Australian Cricket Pathway, and continue to provide important development opportunities for our emerging stars. These championships have been the largest contributor of talent to the men’s national team since their establishment, and have helped the likes of Australian captains Tim Paine and Aaron Finch rise from young guns to international leaders. We have already seen a group of players make the step up to JLT Sheffield Shield cricket this summer, after playing at last season’s Under 19 Male National Championships. In the first half of the season, Jack Edwards and Jason Sangha have made their debuts for New South Wales, as has Lloyd Pope for South Australia and Nathan McSweeney for Queensland. It just goes to show that the next level is not that far away. To all of our players, this is an exciting phase of your sporting journey and I encourage you to embrace this experience. Enjoy the challenge of testing yourselves against the best players from right across Australia, and the opportunity to play with your teammates and create memories that will last throughout your cricketing careers and beyond. • Is Australian Cricket Racist?
Is Australian cricket racist? What they said… ‘There wasn’t a match I wasn’t racially abused in when I went out to bat’ John McGuire, an Indigenous player who is second in the all-time run-scoring list for the first-grade competition in Western Australia ‘We have to be vigilant against any comments, against any actions, even though it’s conducted by only a very small minority of people’ New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian warning cricket fans against making racially abusive comments The issue at a glance On January 9. 2021, on day three of the India vs Australia test match being played on the Sydney Cricket Ground, India captain Ajinkya Rahane and other senior players spoke to the umpires at the end of play. It was subsequently revealed that they were alleging racist abuse from some sections of the crowd. On January 10, play was stopped for eight minutes following claims of more alleged abuse. At least six fans were removed from their seats for allegedly making racist comments after Mohammed Siraj ran in from the fine-leg boundary, alerting teammates before umpires passed on the message to security and police. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jan/10/india-report-alleged-racist-abuse-from-scg- crowd-during-third-test A subsequent enquiry confirmed that racial abuse had occurred; however, the six spectators who had been escorted from the stadium were not the perpetrators. https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/12200065/cricket-australia-confirms-india- players-were-racially-abused-in-sydney-six-fans-cleared The incident has provoked significant discussion regarding the extent of racism in Australian cricket.

14 Sports Monday, December 7, 2020 Photo of the Day News in brief World Athletes of the Year PARIS: World record-breakers Mondo Duplantis of Sweden and Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas were on Saturday named the male and female World Athletes of the Year. In a season to remember, not least for the coronavirus-hit scheduling, Duplantis broke the world record in the men’s pole vault twice. The 21-year-old cleared 6.17m and 6.18m on back-to-back week- ends in February, just weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic brought track and field to a grounding halt. When competition finally resumed, Duplantis capped his season by producing the highest out- door vault of all time (6.15m) and finished the year undefeated in 16 competitions. “It was a really strange season, for me and everybody, but I was able to put it together and get some pretty good results,” said Duplantis. — AFP Wales beat Italy to finish fifth LLANELLI: Wales beat Italy 38-18 in Llanelli on Saturday to finish fifth in the inaugural Autumn Nations Cup. Wales looked set for a comfortable victory as they surged into an early 14-0 lead thanks to converted tries by Kieran Hardy and Sam Parry.
