Melbourne Vs Richmond BIG BASH LEAGUE FINAL MELBOURNE STARS V JANUARY 24, 2016 SYDNEY THUNDER FACT SHEET LIBRARY Twenty20 Big Bash League (BBL) The Twenty20 Big Bash League (BBL), comprising eight city-based franchises, replaced the previous state-based domestic Twenty20 competition in 2011/12. Season 2015-16 marks the fifth staging of the tournament – otherwise known as BBL5. The inaugural winner was the Sydney Sixers, the Brisbane Heat won in 2012/13 and the Perth Scorchers have won the two most recent tournaments. Final Placings in Previous BBL Seasons 2011/12 – 2014/15 Season Winner Runner Up Defeated Semi-Finalists 2011/12 Sydney Sixers Perth Scorchers Hobart Hurricanes Melbourne Stars 2012/13 Brisbane Heat Perth Scorchers Melbourne Renegades Melbourne Stars 2013/14 Perth Scorchers Hobart Hurricanes Melbourne Stars Sydney Sixers 2014/15 Perth Scorchers Sydney Sixers Adelaide Strikers Melbourne Stars Final BBL Table for 2015/16 Team M W L N/R Pts NetRR In the first four years of the BBL the Perth Adelaide Strikers 8 7 1 - 14 0.544 Scorchers were the most successful team with Melbourne Stars 8 5 3 - 10 0.366 two championships and two runners up Perth Scorchers 8 5 3 - 10 0.181 performances. The Sydney Sixers were the next Sydney Thunder 8 4 4 - 8 0.375 most successful with one championship and a Melbourne Renegades 8 3 5 - 6 -0.041 runner up. The Melbourne Stars, often one of Brisbane Heat 8 3 5 - 6 -0.204 the tournament’s favoured teams, have made the BBL finals each season but 2015-16 marks Hobart Hurricanes 8 3 5 - 6 -0.955 the first occasion that they have won their semi- Sydney Sixers 8 2 6 - 4 -0.330 final. The Sydney Thunder previously had three “wooden spoons” and a seventh placing but a greatly enhanced performance in 2015-16 has resulted in their first finals appearance and ultimately a place in the final. BBL Semi-Finals for 2015-16 Adelaide Oval, January 21, 2016: ADELAIDE STRIKERS 7/159 (20 overs) (AI Ross 47; CJ McKay 3/44, SR Watson 2/28) lost to SYDNEY THUNDER 2/160 (17.4 overs) (Usman Khawaja 104*, HM Nicholls 35*) by eight wickets. Player of the match: Usman Khawaja Winning the toss and batting on a humid evening the Strikers endured a rare top order failure losing 4/64 off ten well-directed and economical overs particularly from Clint McKay (3/44 off 4 overs) and Shane Watson (. Recovery was built around a fine 47 from Alex Ross and Michael Neser (27) but the total appeared below expectations. The Thunder cruised to a comfortable win highlighted by a sublime man of the match performance from Usman Khawaja. His cultured 104 not out (13 fours, three sixes off 59 balls) featured shots to all parts of the field and proved a challenge beyond the Strikers bowlers. MCG, January 22, 2016: PERTH SCORCHERS 7/139 (20 overs) (M Klinger 44, AC Voges 52: DJ Worrall 3/25), lost to MELBOURNE STARS 3/140 (18.1 overs) (MP Stoinis 44, KP Pietersen 62) Player of the match: KP Pietersen Stars won the toss and took the field. After a wet day with a rain affected slow field they had put up an excellent performance to limit the Scorchers to 139 with Worrall’s bowling at the death especially effective, as were the performances of the two spinners, Zampa and Beer. The conditions for the Stars chase were not ideal, however a stellar performance by Kevin Pietersen, ably supported by Marcus Stoinis ensured they were on target early in the innings and they reached their total with 11 balls to spare. • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

Share | TRI Posted byo Eiz n Thursday, 08 March, 2012, 12:06 PM Australia held their nerve to win the deciding third match of the tri-series final against Sri Lanka by 16 runs at the Adelaide Oval. Shane Watson's side batted first and posted 231 as the hosts were bowled out with three balls of their innings remaining with David Warner and Matthew Wade both falling with their half-centuries in sight. Upul Tharanga compiled a masterful 71 with wickets tumbling around him, and Mahela Jayawardene's side fell just short with seven deliveries remaining as Clint McKay produced an inspired spell with five wickets to close out victory. Australia selected two spinners but it was the quicker bowlers who made the difference with the outstanding McKay (5-28), Brett Lee (3-29) and stand-in skipper Shane Watson (2-13) all contributing as they dismissed Sri Lanka for 215 with six balls remaining. Australia will now retain the number one ranking in the one-day international championship for a third successive year unless they lose all five matches on their upcoming tour of West Indies. The Sri Lankans, who won the toss and elected to field, would have been delighted with their victory target of 232 after chasing down 272 with ease on the same ground two days ago to level the series.
