The Melbourne Stars have not won the championship but have reached the finals in eight of the nine BBL seasons, and were runners-up in 2015/16 and 2018/19. The Stars finished last in 2017/18. GLENN MAXWELL: Outstanding Performances as Player of the Match Glenn Maxwell (left) has been Player of the Match four times in the twelve times these teams have played each other until the BBL09 Home & Away competition. His outstanding performances demonstrated his versatility as an all-rounder, with explosive batting and effective spin bowling. His fast reactions have brought about spectacular saves and memorable catches. In BBL02 on December 21, 2012, with the Stars batting first and the score at 2/17, Maxwell blasted 82 runs off 50 balls in 49 minutes (strike rate 164), hitting 6 fours and 3 sixes in a wonderful 118 run partnership from 69 deliveries with Brad Hodge, to reclaim the ascendancy for the Stars. Seen here in action in BBL03 against the Sixers on December 29, 2013, Maxwell hit 37 runs off 18 balls, demonstrating a wide range of shots including consecutive reverse sweeps to the boundary. His 20 minutes at the crease produced 3 fours and 2 sixes, with an incredible strike rate of 205.56. With the Sixers then batting, Maxwell created further havoc by being involved in the run out of Marcus North, catching Brett Lee, and taking three wickets for 26 runs from his four overs. In BBL05 on December 27, 2015, Maxwell again demonstrated his power hitting, with 50 runs off 36 balls, including 5 fours and a strike rate of 138.89. He also captured the wicket of Brad Haddin. For the BBL08 clash at the MCG on February 10, 2019, Maxwell scored 82 off 43 balls, including 4 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 190.69. He took 1/6 (Stars captain Henriques) off his only over, and a catch in the field. ___________________________ Melbourne Star Cap Numbers. During Melbourne Stars home matches at the MCG, located in Change Room No1 are the team’s “Honours Board” and “BBL Cap Number” board (right, photographed on 29/1/2020). The cap numbers board was installed at the start of BBL04 at the suggestion of Clint Cooper, the Stars’ founding Chief Executive Officer. He wanted to capture the clubs history and display their players’ place in it with pride. As of the end of the BBL09 Home and Away season, 54 caps have been allocated. The board lists the player’s name, seasons active with the club and number of matches played. It also notes the club’s five captains. Current captain Glenn Maxwell holds the record for the most number of games and is one of three players to have played over 50 matches. (If Peter Handscomb plays in the Stars two finals he will be the fourth to reach this total). There are three listed with one game. Peter Handscomb is the only member of the BBL01 squad still playing with the Stars. Jackson Bird is the only player to leave, then return to the Star, playing in BBL01, returning in BBL04 and playing through to BBL08. Bird, and James Faulkner share the record for the most maiden overs for the Stars, with three. ________________________ Fact sheet research & writing by MCC Library volunteers Ross Perry & Marie Pernat. • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

  • Sussex CCC Vs Australia a Tourist Match Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, Arundel Sunday 7Th – Wednesday 11Th July 2019
Sussex CCC vs Australia A Tourist Match Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, Arundel Sunday 7th – Wednesday 11th July 2019 Day One Late bursts from James Pattinson and Michael Neser seized the initiative for Australia 'A' on the first day of their first-class match against Sussex at Arundel Castle. Sussex won the toss and batted after persistent drizzle prevented play from starting until just after 3.30pm. The home side made a positive start with Phil Salt (37) and Varun Chopra (30) putting on an opening stand of 69 inside 14 overs. After the pair departed to Jackson Bird and Pattinson in consecutive overs, Luke Wells and Laurie Evans then combined to take Sussex to 112 for 2 with six overs of the day remaining. What had looked like being a solid start to the match was rocked, however, with three wickets falling for just six runs. First, Neser nipped one past Evans' outside edge and knocked back his off stump. Three overs later and Pattinson - with 70 wickets in 17 Test matches behind him - beat Wells between bat and pad with the same end result. Sussex debutant, Aneesh Kapil then fended a rising Pattinson delivery to Marcus Harry in the gully, leaving Delray Rawlins and nightwatchman to see their side through to the close on 118 for 5. Day Two Delray Rawlins made the fourth century of his first-class career before Australia 'A' made Sussex's bowlers toil on day two of the tourist match at Arundel Castle. Resuming on his overnight score of five not out, Rawlins' knock was a classy affair, made all the more impressive by the fact it was scored against an Australian bowling attack boasting 277 Test match wickets.
