THE BLACK ROSE SOUVENIR 60Th ANNIVERSARY EDITION THE BLACK ROSE SOUVENIR 60th ANNIVERSARY EDITION CARDIFF BOOLAROO DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB INC. Presentation Night Friday May 14th 2009 SEASON 2009/2010 Proudly sponsored by CARDIFF RSL CLUB 2 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 3 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 President’s Report “ Cheers Boys Cheers we are the CB’s and every time we play we play to win ! “ The CB victory song has never been sung with the volume or sheer joy as in the Dressing Room at No.1 Sportsground on Sunday afternoon April 4th after victory over Charlestown to clinch our maiden First Grade title. NBN TV summed it up as “ 60 years in the making “. So I ask lets not wait as long for our next one ! Season 2009-10 has been a successful one with the CB’s taking out the Dr E.P. Barbour Shield as First Grade Major Premiers & Final winners – masterly led by Anthony Hobson. Also the young CB’s were able to claim the Bert Atkin Shield as Under 21 Major Premiers & Final winners – with Matthew Chappell at the helm. But more importantly the buzz around the Club and the many new members & returning old boys was reflected in the huge turnout to No. 1 Sportsground to help our boys win their titles. The CB’s 60th season got off to a wonderful start back in September last year with our highly successful Reunion here at Cardiff RSL. Guest speaker Kerry O’Keeffe provided great entertainment & challenged the CB’s to win their first title to cap off our celebrations. I don’t know if Skull’s challenge inspired our guys but it certainly dangled a carrot with the thought of being the first CB team to claim the NDCA Title. The no. of times I heard and read about it even I started to wonder if 2009-10 may be our time. I would like to express my thanks to our hard working Committee & volunteers. Gerard Maher added Practice Captain to his many other CB roles as well as being a major sponsor. He seemed pretty calm with our success but I am sure as an old boy he took great delight for himself, the Maher family & the Club he loves. Secretary Rochelle Loveday started this long season organising the reunion & ended it organising this Presentation night. For your help we thank you in what is a big job. Ian Hancock (ably assisted by Roxy) had a new toy to play with as he oversaw a new wicket at No. 2 Oval. By season end it was back in use in top nick for 3rd & 4th Grades and also on Saturday morning for our Junior Club. His attention to detail also ensures our practice wickets offer us the best of training facilities. Thanks Ian. Darryl & Jason Gregory once again provided decks at Walters Park while Cardiff No.2 was out and serviced our wicket rollers amongst other odd jobs. Our Juniors were able to use the facilities which helps transition them for a move to the CB’s should they wish to try the longer form of the game. Thanks boys – your assistance is highly valued. Darryl had Life Membership awarded at our 60th reunion – a fitting reward. The wicket at Cardiff No. 1 was as good as and better than most of the wickets I saw around town this year. This was the result of our curator Luke Penfold’s skill & detail. Also we played when many of the wickets around town were washed off. I hope that Luke can help us again next season. www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 4 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 After our reunion Pat & Janice O’Reilly asked if they could assist us by providing lunch & canteen facilities at No.1 Oval. Not only did they provide a great selection of food & drinks but returned a profit for the Club. New Coach Geoff Smith was appointed and our improvement – especially with our batting – was immediate. Thanks for lending us your knowledge Geoff & we hope to have a bowling analysis option in place this season. Matthew Maher took upon himself with Bob Mayo to hold an Old Boy’s Day on the hill at Cardiff Oval as we cheered First Grade to victory against Wallsend. A big roll up of Old Boys returned and enjoyed the afternoon & many batted on to the RSL for the evening. To the CB players that made Representative teams go our congratulations. Skipper Anthony Hobson represented Newcastle in winning the Country championship & was selected to represent NSW Country in the Australian Country Championship but had to withdraw due to work commitments. Ray Cooper & Jason Keelan were members of the Newcastle Colts side that won the Country Colts title in Maitland. Ray was also selected in the NSW Country Colts side that played Sydney Colts. Well done guys. Finally we thank our Sponsors without whose support we would struggle to stay competitive. To Ben Hamilton & Staff at Cardiff RSL thanks for your assistance & adding value to our relationship. Thanks to Bob Murdoch and staff at Cardiff Bowling Club for cooling us down after many a training session. So please enjoy yourself tonight & celebrate the great year that we have had. The NDCA is proposing changes to the structure of the NDCA and we will keep you posted as to what the future holds for your Club – the Mighty CB’s ! www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 5 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 Monday 5 April 2010 To: John Porcheron (President, Cardiff-Boolaroo DCC) Gerard Maher (Vice President, Cardiff-Boolaroo DCC) Rochelle Loveday (Secretary-Treasurer, Cardiff-Boolaroo DCC) Subject: Congratulations!!! Dear John, Gerard, Rochelle and Cardiff-Boolaroo members, On behalf of NDCA Chairman Paul Marjoribanks, Deputy Chairman Jerry Tombleson and the NDCA Management Committee, I extend our warmest congratulations on the success of your 60th Anniversary Season. I am sure that the 2009/2010 season, culminating in your first ever victory in a First Grade Final yesterday, has exceeded all of your expectations. It was especially heartening to see No 1 Sportsground filled with many Cardiff-Boolaroo supporters over the past two days. It is very refreshing to see that such positive support for local cricket continues to exist in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. We hope that all of your club members have enjoyed sharing in your success. We hope you enjoy a final celebration for the 2009/2010 season at your upcoming Presentation Evening on Friday 21 May 2010. Kind Regards Royce McCormack Royce McCormack NDCA Secretary www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 6 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 CB’s Lose a Legend While season 2009-10 will always be remembered for winning it also laid claim to the passing of Life Member Sandy Alder. Sandy passed away on March 16 and his Farewell was held at The Willows Uniting Church at Warners Bay. A huge turnout of the CB & Newcastle cricket fraternity attended to pay their respect. Sandy Alder was a tall fast bowler who represented the CB’s for over 20 years. He played in the 1955-56 Final taking 5 wickets in the first innings victory but heart breaking outright loss to Hamilton. Added to his on field action Sandy also contributed off field as well and served as CB President for over 10 years. With wife Betty by his side the Alders were CB cricket. Sandy’s whole family either played, scored or prepared tea for a generation of CB cricketers. Selection in the CB 60 Year Team at our reunion last September was met with great modesty. Sandy would have preferred to give rather than receive and that night he spent time with Anthony Hobson offering suggestions to assist the CB’s title quest. Betty & family attended the recent 1st Grade Final and were there to cheer the CB’s home. Fellow life member Ian Gorton arranged for Betty to present the boys with their NDCA Winners Medals in what was a great gesture. I am sure Sandy was upstairs cheering them home. www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 7 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The decline had perhaps begun as early as the 1999 World Cup final, and peaked during the 2003 World Cup tournament and it became more obvious in the aftermath of the twin series defeats against India at home in early 2004. The services of Bob Woolmer as coach were acquired by the Pakistan Cricket Board in an effort to ensure that the team came up with improved performance and did justice with the loads of talent. The move has paid dividends.

  • CWC 2007 Remember When
The Official Newsletter of ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 Final Edition Highlights from CWC 2007 Remember when... a trip down memory lane Final Edition Bravo to CWC 2007 Organisers t had its controversies and detractors, but ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 will go down in history I as 0ne of the most memorable world cups ever. Logistically, staging the CWC 2007 across nine countries was never going to be easy but the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) broke historic new ground by pulling off a most successful tournament, said the ICC. “The stadiums were excellent and will be a lasting legacy for the future young cricketers of the region. Chris Dehring and his team did a superb job and I would be grateful if you could please pass on my gratitude and best wishes to them and members of the CWC 2007 Board,” stated former ICC President, Eshan Mani in a congratulatory note to the WICB. “I have had the privilege of being involved in the last four (ICC Cricket) World Cups. The organisation of (ICC) CWC 2007 was the best I have seen.” Millions of viewers around the world tuned in to view a sensational opening ceremony on March 11 at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium in Jamaica. A wonderful synergy of sound, colour and movement, the opening gala was a vivid exhibition of the Caribbean’s diverse heritage and creative spirit, which ended with a dazzling fireworks display that left the audience mesmerised. The ceremony featured live performances of some of the region’s top acts and international music artistes including Ashe dancers (Jamaica), Aisling dancers (Ireland), Lucky Dube (South Africa), Third World (Jamaica), David Rudder (Trinidad), and Alison Hinds (Barbados).

  • 6 a Taste for More
6 A TASTE FOR MORE Leaving Sabina Park after the game against Zimbabwe the boys were enjoying their first taste of big time cricket – and we wanted more. The twenty-minute bus ride back to the hotel saw Ireland’s Call sung several times and I gave my customary loud rendition of Aru Cha Cha. Arriving back at the team hotel and I continued what had developed into a routine of shaking hands with our security man, Big D, and he would reply ‘Respect, One love’. Sky Sports, RTÉ, Newstalk and a huge sub-continental press contingent were there: ‘Can you guys win this group?’, ‘Is this a flash in the pan?’, ‘What’s next for Ireland?’, ‘Will the team party hard tonight?’ Once it was over I sat down just in time to watch the highlights of the Zimbabwe game. While I had been involved in televised games before it was very strange watching myself on the replay, possibly because of the amount of camera time that I was given. It made an impression on me and from then on I was more cautious about my on-field behaviour. That night, JB and I had a couple of beers watching the highlights of our game again, as well as those of Sri Lanka v Bermuda. Poor Bermuda were given a lesson, losing by 243 runs. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara had gone to town on their attack, while the Sri Lankan bowlers looked like they were playing against club cricketers. It wasn’t a great advertisement for the so-called ‘minnows’.
