“ Cheers Boys Cheers we are the CB’s and every time we play we play to win ! “

The CB victory song has never been sung with the volume or sheer joy as in the Dressing Room at No.1 Sportsground on Sunday afternoon April 4th after victory Charlestown to clinch our maiden First Grade title.

NBN TV summed it up as “ 60 years in the making “. So I ask lets not wait as long for our next one !

Season 2009-10 has been a successful one with the CB’s taking out the Dr E.P. Barbour Shield as First Grade Major Premiers & Final winners – masterly led by Anthony Hobson. Also the young CB’s were able to claim the Bert Atkin Shield as Under 21 Major Premiers & Final winners – with Matthew Chappell at the helm.

But more importantly the buzz around the Club and the many new members & returning old boys was reflected in the huge turnout to No. 1 Sportsground to help our boys win their titles.

The CB’s 60th season got off to a wonderful start back in September last year with our highly successful Reunion here at Cardiff RSL. Guest speaker Kerry O’Keeffe provided great entertainment & challenged the CB’s to win their first title to cap off our celebrations.

I don’t know if Skull’s challenge inspired our guys but it certainly dangled a carrot with the thought of being the first CB team to claim the NDCA Title. The no. of times I heard and read about it even I started to wonder if 2009-10 may be our time.

I would like to express my thanks to our hard working Committee & volunteers. Gerard Maher added Practice to his many other CB roles as well as being a major sponsor. He seemed pretty calm with our success but I am sure as an old boy he took great delight for himself, the Maher family & the Club he loves.

Secretary Rochelle Loveday started this long season organising the reunion & ended it organising this Presentation night. For your help we thank you in what is a big job.

Ian Hancock (ably assisted by Roxy) had a new toy to play with as he oversaw a new at No. 2 Oval. By season end it was back in use in top nick for 3rd & 4th Grades and also on Saturday morning for our Junior Club. His attention to detail also ensures our practice offer us the best of training facilities. Thanks Ian.

Darryl & Jason Gregory once again provided decks at Walters Park while Cardiff No.2 was out and serviced our wicket rollers amongst other odd jobs. Our Juniors were able to use the facilities which helps transition them for a move to the CB’s should they wish to try the longer form of the game. Thanks boys – your assistance is highly valued. Darryl had Life Membership awarded at our 60th reunion – a fitting reward.

The wicket at Cardiff No. 1 was as good as and better than most of the wickets I saw around town this year. This was the result of our curator Luke Penfold’s skill & detail. Also we played when many of the wickets around town were washed off. I hope that Luke can help us again next season.

www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 4 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 After our reunion Pat & Janice O’Reilly asked if they could assist us by providing lunch & canteen facilities at No.1 Oval. Not only did they provide a great selection of food & drinks but returned a profit for the Club.

New Coach Geoff Smith was appointed and our improvement – especially with our batting – was immediate. Thanks for lending us your knowledge Geoff & we hope to have a bowling analysis option in place this season.

Matthew Maher took upon himself with Bob Mayo to hold an Old Boy’s Day on the hill at Cardiff Oval as we cheered First Grade to victory against Wallsend. A big roll up of Old Boys returned and enjoyed the afternoon & many batted on to the RSL for the evening.

To the CB players that made Representative teams go our congratulations. Skipper Anthony Hobson represented Newcastle in winning the Country championship & was selected to represent NSW Country in the Australian Country Championship but had to withdraw due to work commitments. Ray Cooper & Jason Keelan were members of the Newcastle Colts side that won the Country Colts title in Maitland. Ray was also selected in the NSW Country Colts side that played Sydney Colts. Well done guys.

Finally we thank our Sponsors without whose support we would struggle to stay competitive. To Ben Hamilton & Staff at Cardiff RSL thanks for your assistance & adding value to our relationship. Thanks to Bob Murdoch and staff at Cardiff Bowling Club for cooling us down after many a training session.

So please enjoy yourself tonight & celebrate the great year that we have had. The NDCA is proposing changes to the structure of the NDCA and we will keep you posted as to what the future holds for your Club – the Mighty CB’s !

To: John Porcheron (President, Cardiff-Boolaroo DCC) Gerard Maher (Vice President, Cardiff-Boolaroo DCC) Rochelle Loveday (Secretary-Treasurer, Cardiff-Boolaroo DCC)

Subject: Congratulations!!!

Dear John, Gerard, Rochelle and Cardiff-Boolaroo members,

On behalf of NDCA Chairman Paul Marjoribanks, Deputy Chairman Jerry Tombleson and the NDCA Management Committee, I extend our warmest congratulations on the success of your 60th Anniversary Season. I am sure that the 2009/2010 season, culminating in your first ever victory in a First Grade Final yesterday, has exceeded all of your expectations.

It was especially heartening to see No 1 Sportsground filled with many Cardiff-Boolaroo supporters over the past two days. It is very refreshing to see that such positive support for local cricket continues to exist in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. We hope that all of your club members have enjoyed sharing in your success.

We hope you enjoy a final celebration for the 2009/2010 season at your upcoming Presentation Evening on Friday 21 May 2010.

Kind Regards Royce McCormack Royce McCormack NDCA Secretary

While season 2009-10 will always be remembered for winning it also laid claim to the passing of Life Member Sandy Alder.

Sandy passed away on March 16 and his Farewell was held at The Willows Uniting Church at Warners Bay. A huge turnout of the CB & Newcastle cricket fraternity attended to pay their respect.

Sandy Alder was a tall fast bowler who represented the CB’s for over 20 years. He played in the 1955-56 Final taking 5 wickets in the first innings victory but heart breaking outright loss to Hamilton.

Added to his on field action Sandy also contributed off field as well and served as CB President for over 10 years. With wife Betty by his side the Alders were CB cricket. Sandy’s whole family either played, scored or prepared tea for a generation of CB cricketers.

Selection in the CB 60 Year Team at our reunion last September was met with great modesty. Sandy would have preferred to give rather than receive and that night he spent time with Anthony Hobson offering suggestions to assist the CB’s title quest.

Betty & family attended the recent 1st Grade Final and were there to cheer the CB’s home. Fellow life member Ian Gorton arranged for Betty to present the boys with their NDCA Winners Medals in what was a great gesture. I am sure Sandy was upstairs cheering them home.

Well another season has gone and its with great pleasure that I say… CB’S are the CHAMPIONS! From the outside looking in who would of thought we would be standing here PREMIERS, we all knew if we made the semis that anything could happen…it only takes two wins and it wasn’t easy but we made it happen, we made history! It’s a special year being our 60th Anniversary and with not making the semi’s last year we knew we had to improve, we were lucky enough to get back past players Daniel Maher and Ray Cooper and an addition in import Daan Van Bunge. We had a strong squad and were all confident as the season began. I would like to congratulate Mick Corrigan and Jeremy Ford on their first grade debuts and Ray Cooper for first grade debut with Cardiff. GOALS FOR THE SEASON SEMI-FINALS: ACHIEVED TOM LOCKER FINAL: LOST TO WALLSEND IN FIRST ROUND GORDON GOFFET SHIELD: WON DEFEND T20 COMP: SECOND IN POOL MAKE LAST EIGHT IN SCG CP: WASHED OUT FIRST ROUND (LOST ON SEEDINGS) PLAY FOR DE COURCY CUP: WON AND DEFENDED 3 TIMES First up for the season we had a comfortable win against Wests, then playing Merewether for The Gordon Goffet Shield we had another win to claim the shield (first time Cardiff have won it ). City came next and another comfortable win along with Ham-wicks and the season started to gain momentum, we were top of the table and it couldn’t get any better. Then just before Christmas we had a hiccup against Toronto but with a great fight back nearly won outright. Christmas break seen us equal third. After the break and one game we would all prefer to forget was our outright loss to University. But in saying that I think as a club and team we stood up after this and it changed our season. We then played against Charlestown for the De Courcy Cup and won, our first win against them in some time! We won in a thriller with Corey playing a great innings of 87n.o! every game was like a semi-final from then on. One of our greatest wins was next…against Belmont where we won by just two runs and with those two wins in hand the team had the self-belief that this could be the season the close ones were starting to go our way. With an outright against Waratah and a win against Wallsend we lost to Stockton in the first week, but found out that we only needed one point to make the semis… our main goal. So we couldn’t let them get the outright and we didn’t. It was a strange feeling losing that game but everyone was pretty stoked anyway because it meant we had made it. Playing against Minor premiers Ham-wicks in the semis we took confidence from beating them pretty easily during the year and with a brilliant knock from Daniel Maher and 5fa from Brinn Osland we made the FINAL. Who would of thought Cardiff VS Charlestown in the final. We bowled and fielded well to be chasing 230 for victory, we got them six down and the rest as they say is history!!! MAY THE PARTY GET STARTED!!!!! So summing it up I truly believe it came down to having such a strong squad with everyone chipping in during the year. There was some special moments to be mentioned: Ray’s 5fa against Merewether, Stephen and Keelo’s partnership against Ham-wicks, Sid and Ray’s partnership against Toronto, Corey’s innings against Charlestown, Brinn’s 5fa against Wallsend as well as his 5fa against Ham-wicks in the semi and Sid’s 90 also in the semis! The bond, friendship, competitive nature and the fun we had, as well as the fantastic support we got as a club from John and Gerrad, coach Geoff Smith and all the friends, family, wives, girlfriends and past players that supported us and got involved with the club this year. With the 21’s winning this year and with the average age of the first grade side just over 25 we’re truly looking forward to the next couple of years. We definately need to step up next season cause as they say we’re not going to be the hunters were going to be the hunted which is a good position to be in!

www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 11 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 2nd Grade Captains Report

(With four different captains here are some of the highlights)

We started season O9/10 with a lot of enthusiasm with a convincing win over Lambton/ New Lambton which gave the boys a lot of confidence moving forward into the season. We then won our next 2 out of 3 games including a great win over Merewether to help secure the Gordon Goffett Shield for the first time. We won the toss & batted first and from that point we were never going to lose. A great opening stand of 97 between Steven Bradbury & Michael Corrigan really laid the platform for a winning total backed up beautifully the following week by Matthew Chappell who had great figures of 4 for 23 off 12 over’s to complete a great win. Special mention to Steven Bradbury for scoring his maiden century with a great 107 which I believe was the turning point for Steve and the start of a great year culminating in a being part of a great premiership win also to see the development of Michael Corrigan who started the season in 2nd grade and was very consistent opening the batting and then was rewarded with promotion to first grade and then played a major role in helping the CBS to their first premiership was a great highlight. Other strong performers this season were Richo who played most of the season in 2nd grade and was very consistent with the bat Matthew Chappell who had a strong season with a couple of match winning performances with the ball and all the young blokes who all contributed at various stages of the season. We did not end the season the way we started but from my point of view we had a very successful season because we had 3 guys in Steven Bradbury Michael Corrigan & Matthew Chappell who played a fair bit of 2nd Grade winning a first grade premiership. With all the young talent we have filtered through the grades plus all the experienced guys we have in the club headed by Anthony Hobson I can see the club being a force for years to come. Matthew Maher

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Round 6 – University The toss was won and I decided to bat on a hard pitch. This is the game where two thriving young star batsman Damien Robb and Scott Richardson decided to step up and lead from the front to push for first grade spots after many slugged out years for the club. Damien started the innings off well with blistering shots and apparently some up and unders that were deliberate. It all came to an end when another young up and rising umpire named Sam Fielding thought he seen the ball hit the pad in front of middle. He didn’t waist much time and fired the soon first grade star to the sheds for an early shower and a whirlwind 42. The crowd went quiet…….Well the 8 players and the 3 parents who were watching at the time. Whispers went round….who is this star going in now they asked…..In walked Scott “Richo” Richardson who played through the rest of the innings with a superb knock full of big hits as well as graceful stroke play. Everyone else pitched in with 20s and 30s which eventually got our total all out for 223. Not much can be said about our bowling. It was a simple case of if you don’t bowl line and length and stay patient you will not win cricket matches. We bowled good in patches with Tom “William” Marshal (2 -25) and Brin Osland (2- 38) the main destroyers. We almost pulled a win out of the bag having Uni 8 out as they passed our score but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. Round 7 - Charlestown The toss was lost and we got sent in on a belter which we new was going to be tough. We started off well taking a few early wickets however Charlestown pulled together a strong partnership between Chris Mace (124) and Daniel Frew (43) which was hard to pull back. Charlestown declared their innings once they hit 302. Rhys Davies (2-45) bowled very well with line and length being his biggest destroyer. Chris Rendina (3 – 36) also pitched in. Tommy Marshal as always, slaved his arse of all day and was not given the figures he deserved. An important lesson was learnt by most bowlers……especially by youngster Sam Bryne…..If you bowl full tosses people they do go over into the bowling club. Feeling confident we could still pull off a win, we made it hard for ourselves continually loosing wickets and not being able to put together any real partnerships. We ended up being bowled out for a measly 165 with young 18 year old Ben Chidge (28), newly married Russ Young (28) and Chris Rendina (38) the main scorers. We were sent back into bat where an experiment took place with a little slinky like kid (Sam Brynes) having to leave early to go watch what I like to think retards kick a ball around a field (The Jets). Sammy after being destroyed with the ball took note and decided to dish out what he received. Big hits everywhere Sammy was hitting Bomb and fours around all parts of the ground. Eventually his luck ran out whilst on 46 after running down the wicket missing the ball and ending up close enough to the bowler to shake his hand. For those playing at home…..Sam got for 46. Stumps were called after both captains decided the pub was calling. Round 8 – Belmont Being a one dayer it was important for the team who batted first to get a handy total on the board. The toss was won and Belmont was sent into bat due to only having 9 players when the coin was tossed. Although we were short on players for the first hour and bowling a few loose deliveries early on, bowlers were changed around which aloud the www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 12 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 wickets to begin to fall. Rhys Davies bowled the spell off his life “which im sure if you ask him he will describe every ball and where it went” ended up with figures of 4-18 of 8.2 overs and claiming the prize scalp of Mark Curry. Sammy Brynes bowled very well in tandem with the key destroyer to end up with figures of 3 fa 26 of 6 overs. Belmont were bowled out for a measly 98. With clouds coming over fast and the rain approaching we needed to try and get the runs quick. After loosing a few wickets early on and being 2 for 8, Russ Young (23no) and Daniel Fruend (16) settled the ship and guided us to a well deserved win. Round 9 – Waratah Mayfield The toss was lost and Waratah elected to bat on another firm Cardiff wicket which was soon discovered did not have a great deal in it for the bowlers. All bowlers slaved away all day and done well (Tom Marshal 3-32, Rhys Davies 2-75, Chris Rendina 2-49, Mathew “thumb print” Chappel 1-68). Bowling tight all day until a 7th wicket partnership took place scoring 98 runs in quick time thanks to Clint Gilmour (67) which took the game away from us. Waratah ended up scoring 267 off 68.5 overs which was a very gettable total on a very hard wicket. After starting off shaky with the early lose of Daniel Fruend (QUACK QUACK) LBW and Mick Corrigan (2) after being run out a partnership ship was formed between Russ Young (10) and Chris Rendina (39). Wickets continued to fall all the way through the innings without any strong partnerships formed. Jeremy Ford (22), Ben Chidgey (20) and Tom Marshall (19) all pitched in to be eventually bowled out for 128 off 42.2 overs Doona ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. So 2nd grade, and much the same a lot of guys with potential. An entertaining game at Wallsend saw us post 300+ at more than 5 an over then Tommy got the most plum LB of the year only to not appeal. Come the last game and a lot of fun was had by all. Chidge may have showed us he’s the worst keeper in the club but he did also show us just how well he hits the ball. There’s better talent in that side than the results showed so hopefully half the team a year older will see a bit better consistency next year. 100% successful record as captain for me. 3rd Grade Captain’s Report

(With four different captains here are some of the highlights)

It was my distinct honour and pleasure to captain our third grade side for 4 matches this season. We split the games with 2 wins, both of which were amongst the most satisfying in my 21 seasons here at CB’s. The win over Merewether, which helped secure the Gordon Goffet Shield, was an amazing team effort, predominantly in the field. With the assistance of Leyton Hitchcock (39) and Ant Young (31) we limped to 141. At the close of play on day one Merewether were 3 for 69 and coasting. Ant spun out a wicket in the first over of the day and wickets steadily tumbled via Gumby’s 3, and even the skipper snaring a couple until Gotham ran out the final batsman with a direct hit from side on, dutifully the boys all went berserk after completing a great come from behind win. Our other success came against Hamwicks. After sending them in, we bowled poorly to begin with but fought back admirably to restrict them to 268, a total that could have been a lot higher. Again Gumby grabbed 3 and Harrison 3 also. Our run chase was the epitome of the batsmen working together. The skipper pushed and nudged 99, Lachy 33, Gotham 46, Thooey 38 and Hitchy got us home with an unbeaten 20. Chasing 268 doesn’t happen very often, and the boys worked brilliantly building partnerships in a tremendous victory. The two losses were a narrow one day loss to City and a first innings loss to Toronto, both very good sides. On a personal note I would like to thank the guys I played with in thirds, especially the many young fellas who helped me recapture my enthusiasm and love of the game. There are some very good young cricketers in this group and some very fine young men. I look forward to seeing them develop and progress in both fields. Sincerely D Robb …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. This season was always going to be a learning curve for the CBS with so much youth in the team. Their is a lot of talent and I believe with further development will continue to improve their game. Callan Harvey was very impressive with the ball with a of 18.95 and Harrison Knowles with a bowling average of 23.71.Leyton Hitchcock in the last game of the year against Stockton hit my old mate Paul Robertson for a phone no I think it went like this 0 4 6 6 4 6 the pleasing aspect for me apart from Leyton’s big hitting was that I was the umpire and took great delight in telling Robbo he should bowl from both ends Anthony Young bowling his had great figures of 5/17 off 10 overs.Well done Anthony. The season in many ways was tough but we never gave up and kept fighting until the end and we were rewarded with a big win over Stockton in the last game of the year. The team song was sung with plenty of vigour. Well done boys.

Matthew Maher ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Once again members of C/B’s were privileged with the opportunity to be captained by me, you lucky bastards. I know you are all thinking that, well apart from Hitchy who after my masterstroke of making him open on a flat Walters Oval wicket ended up with a couple of broken ribs and didn’t play for the rest of the year. Get him a can. That game ended as one of the most disappointing results i’ve ever played. I wasn’t disappointed in anything we did but we played with 9 guys, 5 of whom were under 16 and lost 3 for none to lose. We bowled and fielded so well it would have been a great victory but all those guys learn from experiences like that so it was still a great game to be a part of. The other 3rd grade game i captained was fairly unexciting except for Tarrocash getting hit for probably the biggest six of the year. The young guys I played with all have a lot of talent, I look forward to watching and helping them grow in the next few years. I think Harro swings the ball more than anyone in the club and was growing intellectually as a bowler each week and Lachy hits the ball so well for a 15yr old.(just stop chipping them to mid on) On a personal note thankyou all for allowing me to play and train with you. Apart from nearly passing out a few times it was good to be able to feel a bit normal after the few months leading up to Christmas. Congratulations to the club for finally winning a first grade final now we are the club with the least premierships instead of the club without one. I only pray we can keep the good feeling at the club and enhance it to a point where we can win the club championship in the near future and hopefully a trip to the sportsground again next year and also to the SCG. Its amazing what we can achieve when everyone pulls in the one direction. Hats off to John Porcheron for all his work and to Ian Hancock and to Gerard, get in your pocket and buy these men a beer. 4th Grade Captain’s Report

12 young men and a few old heads. A season for learning, with a goal of batting through the overs. Pre Xmas was a time to adjust from 30 over cricket to 80 over cricket to being out in the field for 80 over’s. From being beaten convincingly in the early games, to being competitive was the learning curve all the young guys helped each other through. After Xmas their confidence, their patience and the aggression they all started to come together, with the team putting themselves in positions to win games. Outright losses, before Xmas became winning positions after Xmas. We didn’t win a game but young men started to get old heads on the bodies and started playing district cricket like men. Our last game was the reward for a hard season was the reward for a hard season with the team having a draw against the tough Wallsend. To all the players both the young and old I would like to thank you for a wonderful year, with next year being the next step in your cricket careers. To Jack Clarke started out the season batting number 11 and then finishing of the season batting at number 1 congratulations on a great performance and getting to see the spoils of your efforts – you have earned it. See you all next year for next year is a new one.

Under 21’s Captains Report

The CB’s are champions once again! This year’s U/21 team continued Cardiff-Boolaroo’s strong showing in the youth competition taking out the title to cap off a great year along with our first grade premiership. The CB’s rode their luck early on in the tournament. It was proved that Cardiff is God’s club after all, when the rain came down exactly when needed at Kahibah Oval. Ray Cooper helped Cardiff post a defendable score of 139 with his 44. But the signs were not good as Charlestown moved to 3/81 off 17 overs with Jason Keelan doing his best to reel them in with 3/31. Luckily, the rains came and being the higher seed, the CB’s moved onto the quarter finals. And from there they never looked back. Waratah-Mayfield copped a smashing in the quarter final as they were forced to sit back and watch Jason do what he does best. The innings looked promising from the start with Sammy Fielding scoring a quick-fire 31 and Jeremy Ford scoring 61 including 10 fours. I also chipped in with 27 near the end, but it was Jason who stole the show. His 141 with 9 fours and 11 sixes was spectacular, and probably the best innings of the tournament. Set 363 to chase Waratah were always going to struggle, and didn’t come close, all out for 120 thanks to 3 wicket hauls by Wayne Newton and Jason, and a couple from opener Ray.

www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 20 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 Merewether were the next obstacle and it proved to be a great game, with some good cricket played by both sides. Again it was Jason that proved the match winner with another great innings of 135, this time deciding against the aerial route with 13 fours and a six. Sam Brynes also established himself as a genuine all rounder with 46 near the end, to help post 233 to chase. Merewether looked on target (2/125 at one stage) but some good bowling helped peg them back, and they collapsed to be all out for 180. After myself (3) and Ray (1) stemmed the top order, it was left to Cal Harvey and Sam Brynes to rattle through the middle and lower order taking 3 wickets each in quick time. In the grand final, local rivals Toronto stood in the way, and those in the know predicted at the start that they would have been our toughest opponents. It proved that way as the decider turned out to be a nail-biter, with both sides succumbing to the pressure of batting in a grand final. Toronto batted first and again were looking alright early on at 2/50. Enter Ray Cooper with one of the best bowling spells I’ve seen, taking 6/21 off 8 overs, including the key wickets of ex-CB boys Matt Gawthrop and Nathan Hudson. Toronto were all out for 109. In return we made hard work of the 109, but Jeremy put us into a position to win with 44 in a game where 17 was the next top score. In the end it was left to the Harvey brothers (Gumby & Pokie) to steer us to victory with 9 wickets gone, and they didn’t let us down. So congratulations CB’s on a great U/21 victory, and hopefully we can repeat our success next year!

Denis Broad OAM Captain’s Report

The Denis Broad Cup was possibly the only disappointment for CB’s this season. We started by getting belted by 8 wickets by Uni. A weak side could only muster 121 and Uni knocked them off in 23 overs and just 2 down. A washout against Hamwicks followed, and then we faced the strong City outfit at home. The highlight of this day was the guest appearance by two Dutch backpackers in the CB’s line up. Apparently a mix up caused by the language barrier had these two chaps playing what looked like their first games of cricket. While their application was willing their ability and skill resembled that of a Mexican walking fish. Those of us who had played cricket before didn’t fare much better in the field and we were left chasing 335. With only 3 batsmen passing 20 and none passing 50 we were never in the chase and scraped together only 181. On the upside we enhanced the Australian-Dutch travel industry. So that left one game with nought to play for and didn’t both sides deliver. Wallsend elected to ‘bat’ first and did world cricket no favours in compiling 146, a total that was probably 40 more than they should have scored. We felt very confident and 15 overs in that had disappeared. Micky C managed 16, the skipper 24 and we were left with Gumby and the tail. When the 9th wicket fell we were still 20 short of a sing. Gumby was all over the situation like Greeny on a piece of Henny Penny. With Harrison he edged us closer and with the help of 38 wides got us 2 runs from victory. They say some men are born great and others have greatness thrust upon them, the Wallsend skipper decided to see which category he fitted in to by bringing himself on to bowl with the match delicately poised. As it turned out he is in a completely different category altogether, his over went wide, dot, wide and we got home, well played sir! So we finish 1 from 3 as the last game was sadly forfeited. We enjoyed our cricket, played it in the right spirit, gave some youngsters (and two tourists) a crack but came up short. The competition is a fantastic concept and hopefully the NDCA will apply some common sense with the fixture next season, 3 months between the first and last round games is simply ludicrous.

WBCJCC Report

2009/2010 was a year of strong player growth for Warners Bay Cardiff JCC. The club increased player numbers by 15 (1 full team) from last season bringing the total number of players to 192 across 16 teams not including the Milo participants. We were the 4th largest club in the NJCA by player numbers this season. On the field we had a moderately successful year with 2 major premiers (U11/4’s and U15/3’s), two minor premiers (U11/1’s and U15/3’s), and 7 of a possible 11 teams making the finals. Off the field, the club is transitioning to fresh management personnel following the departure to Junior Cricket of the inaugural committee members responsible for the creation of the club 5 seasons ago. I am pleased to report that the strong position the club has built up since its inception in 2005/06 continues to be fostered by the new breed of committee members, coaches, managers and other helpers. www.cbcricket.com [email protected] 26 Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club Inc. The Black Rose 2009/2010 It has been pleasing to see the increasing number of volunteers willing to assist in the running of the club during this season. Of particular note to step up this season has been Mark Harrison (Registrar and acting Vice President), Stuart Ward (Milo Co-ordinator), and Peter Lewis (Grounds Co-ordinator). There have been a number of other parents that have offered extra assistance at training, games, working bees and registration days etc. I must also thank the longer standing committee members that have once again provided their services to the club - Peter Mateer (Treasurer), Mike Pickering (Secretary), Julie McCabe (Results Vault and Web Master), Owen Freund (Gear Steward), Ross Burke (Shirts, banners and other gear) and Mark Chambers (ex-Vice President and Good Sports Program). Without the ongoing commitment from these people the club would not function as well as it does. This season the club has focused on improving its strategic relationships with both its affiliated Senior Clubs. We worked with the Warners Bay Senior Cricket Club to develop two turf wickets for our under 9’s Super 8s teams to use at Feighan Oval. Peter Mateer has been instrumental in improving the nets at Feighan Oval, while we continue to work with both the Warners Bay CC and Warners Bay AFL on ground improvement proposals including the replacement of the synthetic #3 wicket. We made a significant contribution to Cardiff Boolaroo District Cricket Club towards the redevelopment of the Cardiff #2 wicket this season. This money has come from the allocated capital improvement funds our club has accumulated over the years. Our relationship with CBDCC continued strongly this year once again with the annual “Welcome Back Day”, “emerging players” program and January coaching clinic all being well attended. Our thanks go to CBDCC for making their players available for these days including the Dutch International Dan Van Bunge. It was wonderful to see the success of both the Cardiff Boolaroo 1st grade and Under 21’s winning their respective Grand Finals with the aid of both previous and existing WBCJCC players. This underlines the benefits to both clubs of working closely with each other. While the future looks positive for our club there are still many challenges to meet over the coming seasons:  We continue to need new volunteers each season as there will always be committee member turnover each year due to the nature of junior sport.  We have continued pressure on our registration fees due to increases in LMCC Ground Hire fees, NJCA team registration fees and a reduction in sponsorship money due to the more difficult economic environment.  Increasing girls participation in cricket and maintaining our player numbers around the optimum 200 level.  Maintaining the club culture of maximising the playing experience and enjoyment of the game for every player.  The upgrading and updating of our facilities and equipment at our key grounds of Cardiff and Feighan Ovals. I have every faith that the Warners Bay Cardiff JCC will be able to tackle these issues successfully and improve on what has been achieved in the first five years of our club which has cemented its place as a leading club in the NJCA. Anthony Mitchell – President Warners Bay Cardiff JCC
