2019- Co-Investigator and Program Manager, Title V Maternal and Child Health Needs Assessment for Arizona commissioned by Arizona Department of Health Services. Lead in designing the assessment in collaboration with four faculty and 10 students; training the team in data collection, qualitative data analysis and report writing; facilitation of weekly meetings, presentations at community forums and steering committee meetings. Reporting to John Ehiri, PI

Jan–Sep 2017 Behavior Change Formative Research for IUWASH PLUS. Management of mixed methods research to understand perspectives of the urban poor on water, sanitation and hygiene issues. Design and piloting of innovative observation case studies, a sample survey, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews; training of project staff in data collection and enumerator management; data analysis, report writing and dissemination of results. Assist with development of a Behavior Change Strategy aimed at expanding access to improved sanitation and water for the urban poor and shifting normative hygiene practices. Reported to Louis O’Brien.

2005 – 2008 Research Adviser, WaterAid, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Researched water and sanitation access issues for people living with HIV/AIDS and people with disabilities. Results supported WaterAid’s advocacy work and development of inclusive sanitation and water facilities. Trained the WaterAid Research officer and supported her participation at three international WASH conferences. Reports are available at www.wateraidethiopia.org. Reported to Helen Pankhurst.

2005 – 2005 Social Development Consultant, CARE, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Evaluated CARE’s Civil Society Capacity Building Project.

2002 – 2004 Research Manager, CARE, Maseru, Lesotho-South Africa. Managed a Research Program for the Livelihoods Recovery through Agriculture Program (LRAP), Lesotho to understand increasing livelihood vulnerability, the impact of HIV/AIDS, and changing gender and generational relations. Hired, trained and mentored the Research Officer, managed local consultants, produced and disseminated synthesis papers. Results were integrated into LRAP livelihood and nutrition programs. Reported to Jo Abbot.

2000 – 2001 Social Anthropologist, World Bank, Jakarta, Indonesia. Research, implementation and monitoring for the Provincial Health Project (PHP), Indonesia, that piloted decentralized health services. Facilitated and monitored implementation of public health accountability mechanisms in coordination with local governments and NGOs in Yogyakarta and Lampung provinces. Monitored the Social Safety Net Program in Health (JPSPK). Conducted research in West Java on perceptions and utilization of health services and on perspectives of different stakeholders on public accountability in health service delivery. Reported to Samuel Lieberman.

1996 Social Development Adviser, DFID, Podocarpus, Ecuador. Team member for Monitoring Mission of Podocarpus Agro-Ecological Project.

1992 -1995 Senior Research Officer, DFID, Ho, Ghana. Co-managed the Larger Grain Borer (LGB) Project. Managed a program of inter- disciplinary, community based action research with small farmers and traders in Ghana’s Volta Region to develop a range of cost-effective and popular technologies for control of the LGB, an insect pest of stored maize. Trained local staff in participatory approaches. Engaged farmers and traders in designing and evaluating on-farm and on-station trials. Worked with extension staff to develop extension materials. Reported to Robin Boxall.

1992 Research Office, DFID, London, UK. Conducted an evaluation of Rural Development Project II, Bangladesh. Reported to Rosalind Eyben.

1991 – 1992 Consultant Socio-economist, DFID, Calcutta, India. Documented experience of training male extension workers to work with women farmers under Indo-British Fertilizer Education Project. Reported to Rosalind Eyben.

1989 – 1991 Senior Research Officer, DFID, Jakarta, Indonesia. Coordinated a sample survey for the BULOG/NRI Rice Marketing Study in Indonesia including training of enumerators from three universities, analysis and
