It was not surprising that in 2016, the Oxford Dictionaries selected “post-truth” as the international word of the year “due to its prevalence in the context of that year’s Brexit referendum and media coverage of the U.S. presidential election” (“Post- truth politics”). In the post-truth era, observes Ralph Keyes “borders blur between truth and lies, honesty and dishonesty, fiction and non-fiction. Deceiving others becomes a challenge, a game, and ultimately a habit.” In a recent speech at a rally held at a north-side high school in Milwaukee, Barack Obama recognized this change: “Throughout human history, certainly throughout American history, politicians have exaggerated. But what we have not seen before in our recent public life is politicians just blatantly, repeatedly, baldly, shamelessly lying. Making stuff up” (Herndon n.pag.). In fact, according to Ralph Keyes, “In the post-truth era we don’t just have truth and lies, but a third category of ambiguous statements that are not exactly the truth but fall short of a lie. Enhanced truth it might be called. Neo-truth. Soft truth. Faux truth. Truth lite” (15). Furthermore, “deception has become commonplace at all levels of contemporary life” (5).2 1 The word is coined by Kellyanne Conway, Counselor to U.S. President Donald Trump. 2 This rise in lying has been accompanied by an increase in “avoidance mechanisms” and euphemisms: “We no longer tell lies. Instead we The Lincoln Humanities Journal Fall 2018 | Volume 6 2 Labeling our epoch as a post-truth era would suggest that there had been, before now, a ‘truth era,’ a period in which truth was well defined, agreed-upon and universally embraced, but the concept of truth has never been free from endless discussions and debates in several disciplines and contexts, including philosophy, art, religion, politics, and science.3 The age-old questions–What does truth mean? and Is this true?–have for millennia occupied truth-seekers everywhere, not only within the sciences but also in everyday life.4 The past itself has not been immune to debates about the validity of its own facts: for some, the past is a cohesive repository of truths; for others, it is a contested period of conflicting memories and competing truth claims.5 Today is no different.6 In this introduction to the special issue on Alternatives Realities, I will briefly discuss the fragile nature of truth, the predominance of deceptive practices, the dialectics of truths and lies within the context of the self- deceived human brain, as well as ways to remedy the “trouble with reality” and truth, to use the title of a recent book by Brooke Gladstone. Knowing the Truth “Truth” is a neutral term, in that it distinguishes between the normal (unmarked) behavior and the supposedly less common variants such as untruths, lies, half-truths, and falsehoods. In everyday life, truth is a given; its lack is not. ‘misspeak.’ We ‘exaggerate.’ We ‘exercise poor judgment’ . .” (13). What I do believe is that an age-old willingness to deceive others is being facilitated in new ways” (18). The Lincoln Humanities Journal Fall 2018 | Volume 6 3 While it remains elusive, it shines by its absence: “Many human activities depend upon the concept [of truth], where its nature as a concept is assumed rather than being a subject of discussion” (Wikipedia, “Truth”). Richard Feynman writes of this paradox: “We never are definitely right, we can only be sure we are wrong.”7 Dictionaries define the word “truth” as “that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality” (OED). This definition is problematic for many reasons.8 It is not just that a fact may be untrue, but that things are not always what they seem. To illustrate the multi-layered perception of the truth, two examples from world literature will be used. The first is “The Story of Abou Hassan, or the Sleeper Awakened” in The Arabian Nights. Abou Hassan is the victim of a practical joke by the caliph, Haroon al Rasheed. After being taken in his sleep to the palace, and being treated for one day as the caliph, he is taken back to his home the next evening after he falls asleep. Once awake, he struggles mentally and legally for weeks, for he does not know who he is or how to act: the sultan or just Abou Hassan.

William Guy Carr was the key purveyor of the tale which, to me, was suspicious at the least. Off and on I’ve been working at it. And I’ve finally cracked the case. The central theoretical claim of the thesis is that the cognitive processing of utterances containing novel euphemistic/politically correct locutions involves meta-representations of saliently unexpressed dispreferred alternatives, as part of relevance-driven recognition of speaker intentions. It is argued that hearers are “invited” to infer the salient dispreferred alternatives in the process of deriving explicatures of utterances containing lexical units triggering euphemistic/politically correct interpretations.

You can liken them to micro-organisms that were unable to be seen before the invention of the microscope – they couldn’t be seen, but they killed people anyway. We, and everything in the universe, is made of energy, which can be defined most simply as “information that vibrates”. What’s more interesting is that everything vibrates at its own unique frequency / speed, for example, a brain cell vibrates differently than a hair cell, and similar organisms vibrate in similar ways, but retain a slightly different frequency than the other.

    The Legalist Approach to the Informal Economy: An Affirmation of Universality Part One Page | 1 Introduction Scholars, politicians, and economists alike are devoting increasing attention to the informal economy. For better or for worse, its sheer magnitude evidences that the informal economy is a significant determinant in the economies of the developing world. Statistically, informal employment constitutes approximately one half to three quarters of employment in developing nations; more specifically, 48% of employment in North Africa, 51% in Latin America, 65% in Asia, and 72% in Sub-Saharan Africa. 1 Additionally, the large majority of all new jobs are generated in the informal economy. In 2002, the International Labour Organization (ILO) reported that “over the next decade, the world’s labor force is projected to increase by 500 million workers, 97% of whom will be in developing countries.” 2 Based on these statistics, more workers will enter the informal economy than the formal. Thus, the informal economy is an integral factor in devising development solutions. Some economists conceive the informal economy as a culture produce feature. Others see it as safety valve that filters workers into alternative employment when the formal economy cannot produce sufficient employment to support them. This view treats the informal economy as a kind of insurance against poor economic climates. Both of these perspectives are generally positive. However, a majority of development economists believe that the informal economy is an exploitative system that needs to be eliminated or reduced in some way.     Terrorism & Internet Governance: Core Issues Maura Conway School of Law & Government Dublin City University Glasnevin Dublin 9 Ireland [email protected] ______________________________________________________________________ Introduction Both global governance and the sub-set of issues that may be termed ‘internet governance’ are vast and complex issue areas. The difficulties of trying to ‘legislate’ at the global level – efforts that must encompass the economic, cultural, developmental, legal, and political concerns of diverse states and other stakeholders – are further complicated by the technological conundrums encountered in cyberspace. The unleashing of the so-called ‘Global War on Terrorism’ (GWOT) complicates things yet further. Today, both sub-state and non-state actors are said to be harnessing – or preparing to harness – the power of the internet to harass and attack their foes. Clearly, international terrorism had already been a significant security issue prior to 11 September 2001 (hereafter ‘9/11’) and the emergence of the internet in the decade before. Together, however, the events of 9/11 and advancements in ICTs have added new dimensions to the problem. In newspapers and magazines, in film and on television, and in research and analysis, ‘cyber-terrorism’ has become a buzzword. Since the events of 9/11, the question on everybody’s lips appears to be ‘is cyber- terrorism next?’ It is generally agreed that the potential for a ‘digital 9/11’ in the near future is not great. This does not mean that IR scholars may continue to ignore the transformative powers of the internet. This paper explores the difficulties of internet governance in the light of terrorists’ increasing use of the medium.

Bright, inquisitive, kind, reflective, mature, and authentic, they are spirited women who have a growing sense of their capabilities and strengths. While many students enter Meredith a bit unsure of what “research” might entail — and whether they are interested in or capable of conducting it — part of the growth lessons here encourage small steps into asking and answering important questions. Perhaps they focus on the “why” of a personality trait, or the “how” of an artist’s technique, or the “when” of a plant’s pollination and what those answers may mean for our world. Or they may test methods, eager to know how a change in chemical or application or calculation might alter the outcomes of an experiment. They talk with their faculty and staff mentors, and each other, about meaning and interpretation and “what if’s” and “what nexts” — all in the spirit of learning, engaging, and making meaning. CSA Day is the celebration of all the wonder our students bring to their studies and to their discussions and to their peers.
