D Auf dem Kühbergl, einem bewaldeten Hügel südlich von Bruneck, liegen, friedlich nebeneinander begraben, die sterblichen Überreste hunderter Soldaten verschiedener Länder und Religionen. Vor genau 100 Jahren wurde der Waldfriedhof als Nationen und Konfessionen übergreifendes Gräberfeld im Auftrag der Stadt angelegt. Mit dem Projekt betraut wurde der in Bruneck stationierte Pionieroffizier und Architekt Ing. Albert Bechtold aus Bregenz, der den Friedhof so gestaltete, dass er sich harmonisch in das Bild des Waldes einfügt. Der Waldfriedhof in Bruneck ist der einzige von insgesamt sechs Kriegsfriedhöfen in Südtirol, die während des Ersten Weltkrieges (1914–1918) angelegt wurden, der sich über die Jahre seinen ursprünglichen Charakter bewahren konnte. Heute zählt er als mahnende Gedenkstätte zu den eindrucksvollsten Sehenswür- digkeiten der Stadt.
