  • The Supreme Discipline of Mountaineering
The Supreme Discipline of Mountaineering To what heaven would it lead me to climb a mountain that flew? Christoph Ransmayr, “The Flying Mountain” MMM Corones on Kronplatz – between the Gader Valley, Olang and the Puster Valley – is the final act in the Messner Mountain Museum project (which comprises a total of six facilities). On the edge of South Tyrol’s mountain plateau with the most spectacular views, in the unique museum architecture created by Zaha Hadid, I present the crowning of traditional mountaineering. Kronplatz offers views beyond the borders of South Tyrol to all points of the compass: from the Lienz Dolomites in the east to the Ortler in the west, from the Marmolada in the south to the Zillertal Alps in the north. The museum is a mirror of the world of my childhood - the Geislerspitzen, the central buttress of the Heiligkreuzkofel (the most difficult climb in my whole life) and the glaciated granite mountains of the Ahrn Valley. On Kronplatz I present the development of modern mountaineering and 250 years of progress with regard to the equipment. I speak of triumphs and tragedies on the world’s most famous peaks – the Matterhorn, Cerro Torre, K2 – and the depiction of our activity, however contradictory it may seem. As in my other museums, I shed light on alpinism with the help of relics, thoughts, works of art (pictures and sculptures) and by reflecting the outside mountain backcloth in the interior of MMM Corones. As the storyteller of traditional mountaineering, it is not my intention to judge or dramatise but simply to condense human experience of a world that is my world, of the 250-year-old contest between man and the mountain.

  • Biathlon Centre Antholz/Anterselva Welcome to South Tyrol!
50 th EFNS European Forester‘s competition in Nordic Skiing 28.01. - 03.02.2018 Welcome to South Tyrol! Biathlon centre Antholz/Anterselva Südtirol Arena Alto Adige Welcome to Antholz, Welcome to South Tyrol! 1 Dear Sport Friends, on behalf of the South Tyrolian Forestry Association, I would like to welcome you to the “European Forester's Competition in Nordic Skiing” in South Tyrol. This year, the EFNS championship takes place for the 50th time. A very special anniversary – and it is a pleasure to host this event. The location Antholz/Anterselva, where the Biathlon World Cup takes place annually, is famous all over Europe. It is a wonderful sporting area in the middle of forests in between the Lake of Antholz and the stunning mountains of the Rieserferner Group. It’s already the third time that the South Tyrolian Forestry Association hosts the “European Forester's Competition in Nordic Skiing”. The competition has already been held in 1984 in Kastelruth/Castelrotto and 1992 in Toblach/Dobbiaco. 26 years later, it returns for its 50th anniversary. The organising committee led by our motivated chair Heinrich Schwingshackl has been working intensively for over 2 years to organize interesting competitions and an attractive frame programme. A very special highlight is the Jubilee Run “50 Years EFNS”: Every cross-country enthusiast can run the popular Tour de Ski course from Cortina to Toblach/Dobbiaco without timekeeping. EFNS is not only about sports competitions but also about friendship without borders. It is remarkable that so many participants with different jobs in the wood and forestry sector of over 20 European Countries come together.

  • Origin and Relationships of Astragalus Vesicarius Subsp. Pastellianus (Fabaceae) from the Vinschgau Valley (Val Venosta, Italy)
Gredleriana Vol. 9 / 2009 pp. 119- 134 Origin and relationships of Astragalus vesicarius subsp. pastellianus (Fabaceae) from the Vinschgau Valley (Val Venosta, Italy) Elke Zippel & Thomas Wilhalm Abstract Astragalus vesicarius subsp. pastellianus is present in the most xerothermic parts of the Italian Alps at a few localized sites. Two populations are known from the Adige region, one at the locus classicus at Monte Pastello (lower Adige, Lessin Mountains) and another in the Vinschgau Valley (upper Adige), and there is a further population 250 km westwards in the Aosta Valley. The relationships of this taxon were investigated with molecular sequencing and fingerprinting methods.Astragalus vesicarius subsp. pastellianus shows a clear genetic differentiation in a Western and an Eastern lineage as it is known from several other alpine and subalpine species. The population at Monte Pastello is closely related to the populations in the Aosta Valley and to the subspecies vesicarius from the French Alps, whereas the populations from the Vinschgau Valley (South Tyrol) belong to the Eastern lineage, together with the subspecies carniolicus from the Julian Alps. Therefore, the origin of the Vinschgau populations seems to be in Eastern refugia and not in the open Southern Adige Valley which would be plausible from a geographical point of view. Keywords: Astragalus vesicarius subsp. pastellianus, phylogeography, AFLP, nuclear and chloroplast marker, South Tyrol, Southern Alps, Italy 1. Introduction One of the rarest plant taxa in the Alps is Astragalus vesicarius subsp. pastellianus (Pollini) Arcangeli. It was first described by POLLINI (1816) from Monte Pastello in the Lessin Mountains between Verona and Lake Garda (Northern Italy) and is currently known from a few disjunct locations in the Italian Alps such as the locus classicus at Monte Pastello, and two inner alpine valleys, the Vinschgau Valley (Valle Venosta) and the Aosta Valley (Valle d’Aosta), as well as from the Maurienne in the French Alps.
