5th and 6th Grade Tackle Football Rules Basic Game Structure 1. 40 minutes - Two 20 minute running time halves - 5 minute half-time a. Clock stops for injuries b. Clock stops after score c. Clock Stops for a time-out d. Clock is kept by the officials 2. Play starts at the 40 yard line a. 4 plays to get 10 yards for a first down b. Spot will not go behind 40 if loss of yardage 3. Touchdown worth 6 points a. Running conversion after touchdown worth 1 point b. Passing conversion after touchdown worth 2 points 4. Teams will get two 1 minute time-outs per half 5. Host team will provide at least one hired official, one other official, and chains for each game 6. Teams will be made up of 5th and 6th graders and should be divided evenly balanced with players of varying skill levels 7. Choose which Saturdays you would like to play

Offensive Rules 1. No unbalanced offensive formations (tackle or over)– all other legal offensive sets are permissible 2. Any fumbled QB center exchange is blown dead and the down is replayed from the original line-of-scrimmage. (Shotgun or under center) 3. For any loss of yardage on a play that is ruled down behind the 40 yard line, the ball is placed back on the 40 4. No player weighing over 115 pounds will be permitted to carry the ball, they can play TE and catch a - coaches should talk ahead of time if there is a question as to which you are playing i. Each team will be responsible for weighing in their players ii. Black strip (or other distinguishing mark) will be placed on the helmet of those players weighing more than 115 pounds 5. Offensive backfields should be rotated every series – emphasis on different players carrying the ball 6. No under center QB sneaks 7. No cut blocking 8. 2 Offensive coaches are allowed in the 9. 30 seconds for offensive huddle play calling and substitutions – not firm but do your best to keep moving (keep in mind it is running time)

Defensive Rules 1. No Blitzing a. must start 5 yards off of the L.O.S. b. Cannot cross the until a clear hand-off is made or QB leaves the tackle box on a run. 2. No defensive touchdowns – turn-over is blown dead and takes over at the 40 3. 4-4 defense only (4 defensive linemen, 4 linebackers, 2 corners, 1 safety) a. No defensive player may line up on the center b. Defensive tackle must line up head up the guard or outside shade of the guard c. Defensive ends must line up head up the tackle, outside shade of the tackle, inside shade of the TE, head up the TE, or outside shade of the TE d. D-line cannot line up in gaps e. D-line can slant on the but not stunt to other gaps f. Linebackers i. Inside-Linebackers must be stacked over the defensive lineman. ii. Outside-Linebackers must be stacked or wider than the defensive lineman. iii. Must start 5-yards back from the line of scrimmage. iv. Inside the 5 yard-line Linebackers and Defensive Backs can start on the goal-line. g. Safeties must start 10-yards back from the line of scrimmage. h. must start 5-yards back from the line of scrimmage. Penalties 1. 5 yards a. False start/illegal motion – give leeway early in the season especially if no advantage is gained or contact prior to the snap is made. b.
